Net Neutrality and Advertisement Hell

Before I started this course, I'll admit that I had no idea what net neutrality even was in the first place. I feel ashamed in having been so ignorant, because the very lack of net neutrality in our current digital landscape is one of the many obvious symptoms of a digital, corporate dominated hell [aside from the presence of advertisements, which I will discuss as well].

From what I've learned, net neutrality is really just the policy which ensures that Internet Service Providers will grant equal internet speed to all sites, content, and applications with not exception. Essentially, that means that ISPs can't give give special privileges to some sites while neglecting others.

Or at least, that's what it should be doing. The problem is, net neutrality has been a very contentious topic for many years. Some people argue that it helps prevent online monopolies and is essential for a free, accessible internet, while others argue that it stifles innovation and discourages investments in new infrastructure.

Eventually, it was decided by the Trump administration in 2017 that net neutrality would be repealed in the US, and it's stayed that way ever since. Given the former president's policies and billionaire background, it's should be obvious why he'd repeal net neutrality in the first place -- to line the pockets of him and his scummy rich buddies. Granted, this decision has not been popular with Americans. In fact, this Huffington Post article from 2018 details the backlash against the repeal, revealing that a whopping 83 percent of Americans disapproved of it.

But what kind of impact would a lack of net neutrality have on the country's online access? What kind of people would be affected? When ISPs are allowed to gatekeep something as basic as internet speed with a paywall, it should be no surprise that the first people to suffer would be the poor. If you don't have to cash to pay for that premium plan, you're screwed. This can very much be said for people living in indigenous reservations, who are especially poor compared to other people in the US. Once again, the Huffington Post covers this issue, exploring how the lack of net neutrality disadvantages Native Americans who use the internet to make a living [such as those who sell art online], as the lack of quality internet access in most areas restricts them severely.

Let's take a break from net neutrality for a moment and instead turn our attention to online advertising. Why do these things need to be so intrusive? Do they really need to sift through so much of our data just to sell us their stuff? For reference, this really good video from CrashCourse offers a good breakdown of how online advertisers do what they do.

The strangest part about advertisers would have to be how complacent we are with them. Most of us already know how much information is accessible to companies and how much control they have over us, but we kinda just accept it. Granted, there are alternative browsers and other programs [like Firefox and uBlock Origin] that promise privacy, but most people don't bother with them and just side with Google Chrome. Oh well, I guess it's not the worst thing in the world.

Really, I just want to finish writing this thing so I can move on to the next.

Bruce Wayne & Jason Todd, Jason Todd & Catherine Todd

Warning: implied/referenced child abuse.

Jason Todd makes no attempt to eat his burger or even take a sip from his soda, despite the loud rumbling of his stomach. He clutches the bag tightly, bringing it closer to his chest when he sees Bruce staring, like he's afraid Bruce would take offense and demand his food back.

Bruce Wayne does not understand him. His threadbare clothes do nothing to hide the skin stretched over bones. He can see the outline of the boy's ribs through his red hoodie. He is clearly very hungry and going by the way he can't seem to take his eyes off the bag of fast food or even how he keeps taking lungs full of the aroma wafting from it, like if he breathes deep enough, he will be filled. He would bet his entire fortune that this kid has not had a good meal in weeks, or even months. Even one as unhealthy as greasy fast food.

The child is clearly starving. Yet, he has not made any attempt to help himself.

Bruce does not have any experience with poverty or homelessness. Even at the lowest point of his life, he had access to basic human needs. Still, he knows enough about human behavior to know that Jason's behavior right now is not the norm. When he gives a clearly starving person food, they usually devour it immediately.

There are only a few reasons why he would not want to eat the food he had enthusiastically accepted from Bruce. Either he plans to use the food as payment for his safety, in which case, Bruce needs to start looking into gangs exploiting kids, or he has someone, most likely a younger sibling in his care. Considering the fact that Bruce had caught him trying to jack off the fourth tire of the batmobile, after successfully getting away with the other three, Bruce is not sure what is most likely to be the case.

"You going to turn me in now?" Jason asks him, once Bruce's burger is out of sight.

"I promised you I wouldn't," Bruce tells him as earnestly as he can manage.

It doesn't convince the child at all.

"Yeah, right," he scoffs. "That's what you all say."

"Don't you think it would be counter-productive to have you arrested for trying to survive? I'm trying to make Gotham safe for kids like you, Jason. Not put you in jail. I might take you somewhere safe, so you don't have to keep living on the streets, but--"

"I'm not on the streets," Jason cuts in defensively. The fear and worry in his expression is clear now. "I live with my mom and we're fine. If you're not going to arrest me, then I'll be on my way."

A mom. Bruce can't decide if it's a euphemism for Boss. He has seen some awful things since becoming Batman. He also knows some parents take advantage of their kids and force them into crimes as a way to 'earn their keep'.

Jason is most likely taking the food to this person, if he's not eating it, and Batman needs to separate them if the child is being exploited.

The child doesn't wait for Bruce's response before he starts his trek back to the Narrows.

Making a snap decision, Bruce calls out to him.

"Common, I'll drop you off wherever you want," he says, knowing Jason would never let Batman drop him off at home. The child is too suspicious, and rightfully so.

Jason stops in his tracks, but he makes no attempt to accept Bruce's offer.

"It will be morning before you make it all the way across town," Bruce points out. "That's <i>if</i> you don't get attacked for the food."

With that, Jason agrees to let Bruce give him a ride.

Even though he was quiet for the first couple of minutes, Bruce could see the wheels turning in the boy's head. Jason has a very expressive face that tells Bruce he is gearing up to say something, as he takes in the interior of the batmobile.

Jason doesn't take as long as Bruce thought he would.

"You're probably rich, huh?" Jason observes.

Oh God, Bruce hopes this kid is not about to proposition him.

"Not really." Bruce's answer is terse to discourage further probing.

"So it's true what they say?" Jason continues, either missing Bruce's reluctance to continue with this conversation or ignoring it. "That you're fucking Bruce Wayne for money?"

If Batman didn't have such a tight rein on his microexpressions, he would have choked. "That's not language suitable for a child."

Jason turns in his seat so that Bruce doesn't miss the elaborate eye-roll.

"I guess you've had to pay informants, huh?" Jason asks. "You know, like in the stories, where a dude is rewarded for giving the cops valuable information for solving a crime. You do that?"

"Sometimes." Bruce is invested in where Jason is going with his questioning. "Why? Do you have information to sell?"

"Depends on your going rate," the boy sasses.

"And how much do you want?" Bruce asks.

"I read in the papers that the FBI pay up to a hundred grand," Jason shrugs. "Shouldn't be too much for you to match, seeing as you have a rich boyfriend."

"One hundred thousand dollars?" The only reason Bruce doesn't laugh is because he doesn't want Jason to think he's being made fun of.

That, and the possibility that Jason may be trying to get free from his abuser, by having Batman go after them.

"You really think your information is worth that much?" Bruce asks.

"You tell me, Batman." Jason shrugs again. "It was worth enough to cause a war between Penguin and Scarecrow. Enough to make my dad disappear, not that that's a bad thing."

Bruce doesn't think he's supposed to hear the last part, as Jason mutters it under his breath. But the cowl picks up the words clearly.

A criminal and/or abusive mother and mob affiliated but now absentee father. Bruce is debating calling Social Services.

He's also aware of the war between Penguin and Scarecrow. A few months ago, there were rumors of a collaboration between the two factions to take over Gotham, before accusations of betrayal.

If it wasn't for the lives being lost, Bruce would be grateful for their misunderstanding.

Still, a hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money for someone like Jason, and is most likely to draw the wrong attention.

"I'll give you five thousand," Bruce tells him.

"Out of a hundred? Are you really that cheap?" Jason snorts. "You roll around in a ride like this and can't even pay for information? Okay, I'll do you a favor and take seventy."

"Ten," Bruce counters.

"All you rich assholes like taking advantage of poor people," Jason grumbles angrily. When Bruce doesn't budge, he relents. "Fifty."

"Fifteen."

"Fifty," Jason repeats firmly.

"Alright, twenty five thousand dollars and that's my final offer."

"Deal!" Jason agrees immediately.

Bruce watches him spit on his palm before extending it to Bruce for a handshake.

"Come on," he urges when Bruce makes no attempt to shake his hand. "We gotta shake on it to seal the deal."

In the face of that logical argument, Bruce spits in his own hand before clasping it to Jason's in a handshake.

If Jason believes he has information that can help, then twenty five thousand dollars is not too much to pay someone who clearly needs it. The cash in the batmobile isn't up to the amount, but it should be enough to buy the time he would need to get the rest from the manor.

"Alright." He follows Jason's directions on where to park. "What's this information?"

"Wait here," Jason instructs him, undoing the seat belt. "I'll bring it to you."

Bruce gives Jason a minute head-start before he takes to the rooftops, to trail the young boy.

After a few twists and turns, he comes to a stop in front of a dilapidated building. A woman rushes out and pulls Jason into a hug.

"I've been looking all over for you!" she scolds. "Where were you? Chris said some man took you. Is that true?"

She is rail thin, her threadbare clothes hanging off her body, but she sounds genuinely distressed as she checks him for injuries.

"I'm fine, Mom," Jason says in comfort before shoving the food at her. "Look, I got us food and I found a way to get away from the men looking for dad."

The woman -- Jason's mom -- shoves the food back at him, before pulling him into an apartment with the door barely hanging on a hinge.

It's hard not to notice the woman's limp, or the way Jason supports some of her weight as they go.

Bruce takes a second to process everything.

Judging by the environment and what he's seen and heard, Jason isn't being abused, but he's in even more danger.

Whether he plans to pay off his father's debt with the money or not, Bruce knows he has to get mother and son away from this place before they end up as victims of mob violence. Whether Jason really does have information to sell or not.

With that, Bruce hops down to the street from his perch on the roof.

Despite how mindful he is of the door, the moment his fist to connects with the door, it falls off the hinge holding it in place, exposing Jason and his mother having either a very late dinner or a very early breakfast in their one bedroom apartment.

They both jump at the sight of him, and once realization dawns on them, their reactions are wildly different.

Jason's mom cowers with fear, shrinking into herself while attempting to wrap herself around her son, but Jason won't have it. He is livid.

"What the fuck, Batman!" the child hisses angrily. "I told you to wait for me."

"Jason, stop," his mother pleads, pulling Jason behind her.

The boy is unmoved. His mother's frailness is no match for his strength.

"You broke our door! Why the fuck would you do that?"

Despite his obvious anger, they're both careful not to raise their voices. Bruce imagines that getting a visit from Batman isn't a good thing in this neighborhood.

"Calm down," Bruce growls.

Both mother and son freeze where they stand.

"We didn't do nothing wrong, Batman," the lady tells him in a trembling voice. "If you're looking for my husband, we don't know where he is."

"I'm here for Jason," Bruce tells her, registering her distress just before he turns to Jason. "You were taking too long," he lies. "I wanted to make sure you were fine."

This seems to placate the boy a bit, but not his mother, who demands to know what the hell is going on.

Bruce watches silently as Jason explains his plans to his mother.

Apparently, his plan is to sell the information his father stole from Scarecrow to Batman, in exchange for money that will get them out of Crime Alley.

His mom doesn't look thrilled, but she lets Jason climb into the ceiling to retrieve what her husband had hidden there.

"You won't arrest him when you have what you want, will you?" she asks with a fierce look.

Bruce can't help but admire that about her. Not a lot of people have that look about them when Batman is staring them down.

Must be where Jason gets his spunk.

"Jason is a good boy," she continues. "He did a bad thing, but it was for a good reason. His heart is in the right place, I swear."

"Mrs Todd--" Bruce starts, but she interrupts him.

"Catherine."

"Catherine," he repeats. "I don't plan to arrest your son," he continues as calmly as Batman's voice will let him. "We made a deal and I intend to uphold my end."

"So you're just going to hand Jason twenty-five grand?" Catherine asks suspiciously. "Just like that?"

"Yes," he tells her simply. "But I don't have twenty-five thousand dollars in cash right now. I can give you a thousand tonight, and a safe place for the night. Seeing as I broke your door. Tomorrow, you will get the rest of the money and I will call someone to fix your door."

As he talks, he pulls out the bills from his utility belt and hands it to her.

Of course, he has no plans of letting them return here. But if he has learned anything from being Batman, it's that, sometimes, all some people have left is their pride.

Poor people hate being treated as charity.

Siccing Alfred on her would be more productive. All he has to do is make sure they meet. Dick would probably appreciate having someone young in the manor, too.

"And you swear Jason will be safe?" Catherine stresses, eyes flickering between the money and Bruce's face.

"I swear," he vows solemnly. That much, he can promise.

A few minutes later, Jason returns from the ceiling, an envelope clutched in his hand.

"Jason," Catherine calls softly, pulling him into her arms before he can give Bruce the envelope. "Baby, there's something I have to tell you about…"

Jasper:

Quality time-- he loves being around people he likes, and feels neglected/misses people if they don’t spend time with him for a while

Gifts-- he loves to give things and get things, especially if it’s involving food, and he has a mental list of things that he knows his friends like/dislike that he just kinda always has in the back of his mind

Touch-- he’s not overly touchy, tbh. Like, it’s nice and all, but it feels a little less personal than like spending actual time together or giving someone something in general

Words of affirmation-- as odd as this may sound, he doesn’t really need a hype man or verbal affirmation. He can figure things out on his own. Compliments are nice, though, and communication is important, so he puts some effort into this one even if it isn’t necessarily his thing per se

Acts of service-- he appreciates someone making an effort to make his life easier and generally tries to do the same, but he considers it more of a being polite thing rather than an actual act of affection. Plus, he can be particular about some things (especially with the way the kitchen is organized) and so sometimes the help isn’t always as helpful as the helper thinks

Friday:

Words of affirmation-- she tries not to show it, but words have a major impact on her, both positively and negatively. A compliment can make her day and a rude comment can just as easily ruin it. She’s very shy about saying nice things to other people, though, in case the compliment is rejected

Touch-- she’s insecure about it because it’s something her mother actively discouraged, but she ADORES physical affection. Once she’s comfortable enough with Jasper someone to feel like she can without getting in trouble, the poor soul is in near danger of being smothered in it

Quality time-- it’s an acceptable, straightforward way to show affection that’s more difficult to pull off when ulterior motives are in play, and she appreciates it for that

Acts of service-- someone??? did something NICE for her??? Unrealistic. She tends to think of this more as someone trying to like get her attention than be nice

Gifts-- this one is Odd because she hates getting gifts, but gives them all the time because she’s rich and has money to throw around, so I’m putting it on the bottom

Hiroki:

Touch-- Hiroki is INCREDIBLY tactile, possibly because of the way his powers work as extensions of himself. Unless there’s a reason not to, he’s touching his friends almost constantly, and can recognize most of their silhouettes by feel when he’s using his powers to sense people. He’ll pick up on any sort of unusual response to/rejection of contact immediately

Quality time-- listen, when you’re an introvert, deciding someone is worth spending time with is A Big Deal, especially if it’s one on one, and he doesn’t hand it out lightly

Acts of service-- to do something for someone so they don’t have to, and then have them do the same for you, is that not an incredible thing? He certainly thinks it is. It would be #2, but there is also Extreme Mental Trauma associated with this one and it’s demoted to #3 as a result

Gifts-- he appreciates gifts (especially if they’re useful), but by and large his habit of knitting things for other people stems from the fact that if he made everything for himself he’d have probably filled his entire apartment with knitted things by now than any real fondness for the gift giving or receiving process

Words of affirmation-- by and large, he thinks that words are cheap. Ironic, because he was an English major, but still

Aaron:

Gifts-- Aaron loves getting gifts. Aaron loves giving gifts. Aaron will spend money he doesn’t have to get people gifts because gifts are important

Words of affirmation-- he’s not really confident enough for you to be able to just let him read between the lines and make a judgement himself, and thrives at praise and clear verbal communication. Will tell you exactly how he feels and how fond he is of you at the drop of a hat

Touch-- physical affection is nice. Not his favorite but not bad by any meansit’s

Acts of service-- yes, okay, people doing things for you is nice and all, but people go and do things or give money to charity for the warm fuzzy feelings while not giving a single flying fuck about the people who are really impacted by it, it’s not really a surefire sign that they like you

Quality time-- like, yes, it’s nice spending time with people but it doesn’t really vibe with him as an affection source. Like you could spend every day hanging out with him and he’ll still be like “but do they like me?”

Forest (I went with young Forest here-- I’m still getting to know older Forest a bit):

Quality time-- I once read a theory that your love languages are defined by what you lacked in your youth. This is very true in this instance. You can instantly tell who Forest gravitates towards by looking at who leaves with him at parties

Touch-- grant it, touch is just a Bigger Thing culturally in the magical realm (given that physical contact between some kinds of magical entities would be physically painful for one or both parties), so maybe that disqualifies this, but yeah touching is a very major thing

Words of affirmation-- he loves to verbally flirt and be flirted with, but aside from that very specific scenario he doesn’t really care all that much

Acts of service-- acts of service and gifts are probably about the same, but you could kind of classify Winter catching his attention by sparing his life an act of service, and then they fall in love, so I’m putting this one at #4. The bastard is in a laughably wealthy ruling class, he just expects people to do things for him, so that’s not a big deal to him (although actually doing something for someone else kinda is)

Gifts-- again, rich and politics Grant it you could call some of those gifts bribes but that’s an ugly word, don’t you think?

Winter:

Acts of service-- the need to look after and help people he cares about if they ever need it is literally what’s kept him alive, and putting it anything other than first would be a disservice. And he takes on so much that any effort made to make his life easier means the world to him

Quality time-- why do you think he never just forged Candace legal documentation and sent her to normal school or daycare? Why do you think he’s so prone to be lonely? He needs time with people

Gifts-- he loves receiving gifts in particular. They’re something to remember people by once they’re gone and parting with them would be terrible for him. But he gives gifts, too. They’re less often physical objects and more often advice or stories, although that changes with Candace as he gets old because he knows he likes having physical things to remember people by so maybe it’ll help her, too

Words of affirmation-- he still appreciates them, don’t misunderstand. And he doesn’t skimp out on telling his kids he loves them. It’s just not his favorite way to receive or show affection

Touch-- again, Magical Realm’s touching is a much less casual of a thing and it’s not really as needed as it is with humans. Between that and his lack of body heat being unnerving to a lot of humans that aren’t used to it, he just... didn’t, really. At all. Like touch was for sex and otherwise he kept little to no physical contact. It’s a big regret he has raising his earlier kids, because he just didn’t know that humans are so innately touchy feely. He probably raised at least one touch starved human on accident (he also adopted a hugging schedule later when he realized “oh shit I’ve fucked up” until he got used to casual contact)

Candace:

Quality time-- if you like someone, you spend time with them? It just makes sense to her (although that doesn't make her immune to the classic "Daaaad leave me alone" complaints)

Acts of service-- you care about someone, you look out for them. Winter’s taught her that very well

Words of affirmation-- she doesn’t need it constantly, but if she does something she’s really proud of she craves validation for it, and will go around showing everyone her new sword that she figured out how to make shoot lightning until someone’s like “wow nice work”

Touch-- she’s not very into casual touching, but if you become a level 5 or above friend you unlock the Cuddle Feature and that is nigh unstoppable once it starts, she’s like a goddamn cat

Gifts-- she’s a dichotomy of loving to give gifts and not really enjoying getting them because she herself isn’t very materialistic (unless you’re giving her swords. Or daggers. Or shields. Or, uh, old school style weapons in general).

Tiffany:

Quality time-- I hesitate to use the word “clingy,” but, uh. There is a definite “pay ATTENTION TO ME” bit of her personality if you leave her on her lonesome for too long

Touch-- Tiff is just a cuddlebug. There isn’t much of another way to describe it. Fortunately her and Candace have been over level 5 friends since they were both knee high to a toadstool

Gifts-- if you give her something, she’ll cherish it forever, and she loves to find things for her friends to give them (even if most of the time it’s cool rocks from the bottom of whatever body of water she’s currently living on with Amadeus)

Acts of service-- she doesn’t think much of it if she does something for somebody else because that’s just how she was raised, but if someone helps her out? She’ll remember it forever

Words of affirmation-- like, okay it’s nice to be verbally appreciated but she doesn’t need it

Gretchen

Quality time-- time is growing less important to her the longer she lives-- immortality can have that effect on people sometimes-- but time simply spent together is still something she heavily gravitates towards

Words of affirmation-- there are few words she loves better than “I’m proud of you” or “good job.” Loves that sweet validation

Acts of service-- she’s very devoted once she grows attached to someone, although sometimes she thinks she knows best when she really doesn’t

Touch-- touching is,, fine. Not great, but it’s okay

Gifts-- she’s immortal. What need does she have for trinkets?

Amadeus

Gifts-- do you think that them not charging Winter for an ounce of booze he’s drank for centuries is an accident? It’s not. They know it’s not really in his best interest, but they can’t bring themselves to deny him a way out of his own mind for a while

Acts of service-- this primarily surfaces in a sort of hovering/annoying parent sort of way. They’ll fuss over anyone

Words of affirmation-- words aren’t as good as something tangible, but still nice. Amadeus has a tendency to be almost transactional in their relationships. They do things for Friend, Friend does things for them. That’s what friendship is

Touch-- eh, it’s fine but they don’t get the hype. Probably because they’re living water

Quality time-- ironic, I know, but they can almost be absent, some of the time. They’d rather do things FOR you than just spend time with you without a purpose

These are Ukrainian Pysanky eggs. An ancient tradition of the Ukrainian people kept and preserved for centuries. The tradition of painting eggs in various styles or colors exists in other cultures, but Pysanky eggs are uniquely Ukrainian. Pysanky means "to write" in old Ukrainian. The eggs are "written".

There are many legends and stories surrounding their origin and purpose. For example, the Hutsuls of the Carpathian Mountains believe that the eggs guard the world against an evil serpent, kept imprisoned on a cliff. Should the eggs one day no longer be written, the serpent will break his chains and wreak havoc on the world. Chaos and anarchy would rule the world. But as long as the eggs are written and the traditions passed down, the serpent is held at bay and order is maintained; chaos kept in control.

After the rise of Christianity and its spread through the Slavic regions, some of the old stories were adapted to fit new narratives. Mother Mary giving eggs to the soldiers at the Cross. Mary Magdalene carrying eggs to the tomb. The Pysanky were always associated with good people and good deeds. But despite the drastic culture shift, the traditions employed in writing these eggs remained. Pysanky can be adapted and applied to new generations, but their importance and power are not easily disrupted.

The writing of these beautiful eggs is painstaking and meticulous. The colors are applied by hot wax and fine tools, starting with a base layer that holds the egg together and placing the colors on layer by layer. The more intricate the designs, the more powerful the supposed shield against demonic forces. The finished piece is often breathtaking in its complexity and intricacies, all stemming from a simple idea created through often rudimentary tools. A properly written Pysanky egg is a beautiful thing, and according to the Hutsuls, means all is right with the world.

Now imagine a certain craftsman. A craftsman of little skill and worse intent. He only cares for his own glory and prosperity, and not that of the world around him. He has no regard or reverence for the rich traditions and skills of those who preceded him. He doesn't understand the details or symbolism inherent in Pysanky eggs, and he certainly doesn't know or care about that old serpent. And yet, he's obsessed with making his own. The best that's ever been. All will look to his Pysanky and kneel in awe, for they did not understand as he does. Their eggs, however beautiful or legendary once thought, will be but shadows and vague memories after his timeless writing is complete. In short, this craftsman is out of his mind. Totally delusional and quite narcissistic. The worst kind of person to write a Pysanky.

Our hypothetical craftsman eagerly sets out to reorder the world of artistic eggs in his own image. But as I mentioned, he doesn't know the proper method. He may not base his elaborate color scheme on that solid wax foothold, and the colors begin to run. This egg would be called not Pysanky, but Linyvky meaning "lazy". A gross attempt to pass off poor painting, plastic, or paper as a Pysanky. A travesty that is meaningless in the battle against chaos.

The Serpent stirs.

The craftsman accidentally misses a crack in the shell that will begin to smell as the egg decays. The smell begins to seep throughout his decadent workspace and out onto the streets. People turn up their noses. What is that horrid stench?

The Serpent smells the rotten egg amongst those well written and senses a weakness in the shield against him. Is this his time?

The craftsman may later drop his crudely written egg, enlarging the cracks or breaking the shell in a myriad of shards. Shards of that which once could have held the serpent in check through it's order and attention to detail, had its author cared at all for any semblance of order. Shards which make it clear for all to see that this is no Pysanky egg but rather a simpletons poor attempt to pass off garbage as art.

The Serpent's chains are loosening. His minions are scouting the world for weak spots. Cracks in the dam. Loopholes in the system. Methods by which to sow dissent and discourage any remaining adherence to tradition. They report back good tidings to their master. The world is barreling towards his cliff, having largely forgotten why they wrote those old eggs at all. The craftsman is one of many it turns out who have forgotten their past and care not to learn. Some of them seek to follow him on his errant path.

Our "hypothetical" craftsman, cares not what the townsfolk and elders have to say of his eggs. "You're living in the past" he says. "We don't need those old eggs anymore. Pysanky?! How pretentious! I have created a new art form. Perfect and beautiful eggs which will need a new name. Something catchy and simple. Who needs all that complexity anyway? And all those stupid rules. We should make the eggs look however we want! Huh? What smell? I don't smell anything at all. In fact, the air has never felt better since I made that egg in there. It's the greatest egg ever painted in history!"

Night falls on the our craftsman's village. The Serpent peers over the cliffside. His time is near. Come morning his chains will be ready to break and he shall tear through this village and all other villages, destroying all the Pysanky and any memory of their existence. This stupid craftsman has served him well. He might just let him keep making his "new eggs". They may serve a purpose. They may fool the masses into giving up on old ideas entirely. Just do whatever the craftsman says. He's always right, and he knows all! Yes, the Serpent likes this idea. Not long now . . .

The dawn has arrived. The Serpent is ready. but then he sees something that strikes fear into his heart. The townspeople have gathered and they're marching towards our craftsman's workshop. They're carrying chains and look quite determined. This isn't how it's supposed to go! It was to be the Serpent's time at last! He strains to break free with every fiber of his being. His minions rally around the workshop, spewing lies and half-truths about the craftsman's new and wonderous eggs. Some townspeople stop to listen, but many steel themselves and press on through the door.

There is a brief silence. Then a pitiful whining voice as the people drag the craftsman from his shop and back through the streets towards a distant hut. The charade is over. The shop's Linyvky discarded. The tradition of the Pysanky will endure, and the Serpent's chains give him a sharp yank back to his abyssal prison. He snarls in fury as the village fades from view. So it wasn't his time just yet. But one day . . .

The townspeople drag the craftsman into the hut and toss him on the floor. Sitting across from him is a wizened elder of the village. A babushka who has seen his kind before. She is the master of Pysanky in their village, and the keeper of the old methods and stories. She leans down to him and speaks slowly but without wavering. "So, you thought you had it all figured out did you? You thought these traditions were a waste of everyone's time and we should all forget them and blindly follow YOU? Follow and admire your "beautiful, perfect eggs". Well son, some of us still remember why we have those old eggs in the first place, and why they're written a certain way. And we will not sit by and let you throw it all away. You can paint however you like and even smash your eggs and call it art. But at the end of the day, eggs are fragile things. And Pysanky eggs in particular, have rules. You might even think of them as laws. Laws which exist for a reason, and which I'll fight for until my dying day.

Now you're free to leave this village and live your life as you wish. But we won't be following or listening to your ramblings any longer. And you'd best remember that Pysanky, like our little village, have rules."
