#does ñ count right?

Note
Hey Natti, I am thinking of recording a cover of the Songcord in a random place with amazing acoustics (current contenders are the hallway of my apartment (NOT happening, the neighbors will hear), my university at 1am (probably not happening either because people will heeear), and the local bank at 1am (best option so far)). However, before I do this I would like to check with you how to pronounce the lyrics correctly, because I heard Zoe making some mistakes. Like te'lan (heart) is actually txe'lan, isn't it? And munge shouldn't be pronounced muñe, right? Also there's the one word that even Na'vi speakers couldn't quite identify, ahuta/awta/something? Your help would be greatly appreciated, friend! :)
So the word people were struggling to identify is huta, and the reason they were struggling is actually because it was actually a brand new word introduced for the first time in that song! Language creator Karyu Pawl talks about it on his blog, where he also posted the official lyrics + translation :) http://naviteri.org/2022/12/neytiriya-waytelem-neytiris-song-cord/
As for pronunciation, she does make two very minor mistakes as far as I can tell, one of which being the “munge” you mentioned (you’re right, it shouldn’t have that ñ sound), and the other being that her “ngaru” sounds like “ngaro” (to me at least). If you wanna get really nitpicky she does technically also drop the glottal stop in za’u etc., but that kind of thing is generally considered permissible when singing so I wouldn’t count that one hrh.
Te’lan, however, is actually correct. The word for heart is txe’lan, but the word that comes before it, mì, is one of a handful of words that cause something called lenition, which basically softens certain sounds at the start of the following word. So ejectives like tx get softened to their non-ejective counterparts like t.

In Place
Title: In Place
Word Count: 4274
Summary: A year later, Roman returns to the Sanders’ abode for Christmas. And maybe he’s still trying to figure out where he’s supposed to fit. Companion piece/Sequel to Homeward but can be read separately. Romantic!Parents!Logicality, familial!LAMP
Warnings: Feeling out of place. Fluff. Christmas clichés and tropes. Occasional undercurrents of angst, but it’s mostly holiday found-family fluff, tbh. Patton is Latinx in this but it’s only really mentioned in passing.
A/N: Is this chock full of clichés and tropes? Yes. Am I sorry for that? Nope. Do I have mixed feelings about how this fic actually turned out? Yep. C’est la vie. Happy holidays!
December 23. 10:43 AM.
Roman looks over, his mouth quirking into a small, appreciative smile as Logan hands him a mug full of a steaming liquid. Roman’s folded up in the chair by the window, watching the late morning snowfall drift in large, lazy flakes towards the blanket of snow already on the ground. His first snowfall—in the middle of the night outside a broken down car with Virgil—flickers through his mind for not the first time in the past week.
Had that really been a year ago?
“Thanks, Mr. Sanders,” Roman says. A quick glance and deep inhale of the contents of the mug indicate it is coffee. He takes a tentative sip, an odd and unexpected note of affection squeezing his chest as he realizes that they remembered his usual of three spoonfuls of sugar.
Logan inclines his head. “You are welcome.” He has a mug in his own hand—and the faint scent of coffee drifts in the air around them. “How did you sleep?”
“Long,” Roman replies with a sheepish smile. “But it was good.”
The corner of Logan’s mouth twitches in something like amusement. “Still not as long as Virgil.” He glances towards the stairs and shakes his head.
Roman laughs a little. Virgil had yet to emerge from his room today. The college student quickly brushes the bangs falling into his eyes back into his hair. The brief moment of calm is interrupted by the sound of music drifting into the living room from the kitchen: a song that Roman recognizes as soon as the trumpet line kicks in, even before the lyrics.
“Feliz navidad. Feliz navidad. Feliz navidad, prospero año y Felicidad.”
Patton suddenly appears from around the kitchen doorway, dancing and singing along into a whisk. He’s in blue pajama pants and a gray t-shirt with a cartoon cat on the front. Roman can’t help the smile that breaks across his face, and though Logan rolls his eyes as Patton dances his way towards him, the spark of affection is evident. Almost as if it’s routine, Logan sets his mug of black coffee down on the side table right before Patton grabs his hand and pulls him into a dance in the middle of the living room.
Roman sips his own drink and watches them. Patton continues to sing in Spanish, and Logan matches his dancing at every step. Roman thinks it might be salsa. Or merengue. He doesn’t remember much from his dance lesson days. Logan and Patton, though, are actually…. Quite good.
Roman laughs as Virgil emerges from the stairs a moment later, confusion and bewilderment flashing shamelessly across his face as his dads dance to “Feliz Navidad” in the living room. Patton glances over towards the foot of the stairs and grins. Virgil shakes his head, says something about “too early for this”, and turns as if to go back upstairs.
Patton breaks from Logan and grabs Virgil’s hand. “C’mon, kiddo”, Patton chimes brightly at the same time that Logan says something about it being “nearly 11 o’clock”. Virgil trips a little as his dad pulls him to join the two of them dancing. Virgil lets his dad spin him around once and then stumbles his way towards the kitchen with a barely contained smile and a note about making sure breakfast doesn’t burn.
He shrugs his shoulders at Roman from across the room before he disappears through the kitchen doorway.
Patton rolls right into Logan’s anticipating arms as they dance together again until the song ends. Logan presses a small kiss to Patton’s head as the song fades out.
“You guys are really good,” Roman says.
Patton grins. “Thanks, kiddo.”
“I suppose it is mostly Patton’s side of the family to thank for that,” Logan adds as he returns to his coffee cup on the table beside Roman. “Patton has known how to dance like that for as long as I’ve known him. I picked up a few things from his family over the years.”
Patton leans over and kisses Logan’s shoulder. “You also took dance lessons before our wedding to surprise me. I’m sure that helped, too.”
Logan hums noncommittally. “The wedding was nearly exclusively your family, after all. The last thing I wanted was to embarrass myself. Dance lessons seemed like a practical investment, given the situation.”
Virgil’s voice from the kitchen interrupts the conversation. “So what’s the plan for today?”
“Shopping, I believe,” Logan calls back to him. “Patton and I have a few more things to get. You and Roman are welcome to come along.”
Roman glances outside again. From his position in the chair, he can see down the street a ways to the corner. Mr. Picani’s inflatable snowman is in the same position it was from Roman’s exhausted memory last year. Across the street, two small children are having a snowball fight. Roman snorts when he sees a man emerge from the front door—bundled up in a coat, scarf, hat, and gloves—wielding a nerf gun. The two children shriek excitedly and take off running towards the back yard.
It leaves an odd feeling in Roman’s chest.
“I’m down,” Virgil replies. “Roman? You in?”
Roman blinks and looks back at Logan and Patton. Patton tilts his head, his brow furrowing in something like concern. Roman offers what he hopes is a reassuring smile. “Yeah. I’m in.”
December 23. 4:10 PM.
Roman grabs a glass ornament from the vendor’s table and turns it over gently in his hand. The cold December air causes the breath of wonder that escapes his lips at the intricately designed object to form a small cloud in front of his face. Roman tucks his nose a little further into his scarf.
“That’s hand-blown,” the vendor—an elderly gentleman with frazzled gray hair and pink cheeks—tells him.
“It’s beautiful,” Roman tells him sincerely. He sets it gingerly down in the box he’d pulled it from. He glances over his shoulder as the bell above the door to the puzzle shop jingles, signaling Patton’s emergence from it. He looks left, then right, then crosses the walkway towards the ornament stand that Roman and Virgil had been perusing. Virgil, at the other corner of the table from Roman, looks up as his dad approaches.
“Is your father nearby?”
Virgil eyes the not-at-all-subtle way that Patton is hiding something beneath his jacket. He shakes his head. “I think he went to the bookstore to get something for Corbin and Sloane. Why?”
Patton pulls a blue plastic bag from beneath his gray coat and opens it. Virgil peers in. “I got your father that hand-carved chess set he’s been eyeing for a few months. I’m gonna go hide it in the car. I’ll be right back.” He gives a bright smile to Roman before rushing off towards the parking lot.
Virgil shoves his hands into the pockets of his black coat and crosses the few steps towards Roman. “Dad is terrible at hiding things. He gets lucky that father doesn’t really go looking.”
Roman’s mouth quirks into an almost-smile. “Didn’t you say something about one of them eating part of that gingerbread kit last year?”
“That was dad.” Roman doesn’t miss the look of warm affection in Virgil’s eyes, even as they both start walking towards a bench to take a seat. They pass by a chestnut stand and the earthy scent is almost enough for Roman to forget just how cold it is outside.
A father wearing a Santa hat with a young girl dressed like Elsa on his shoulders passes by. Roman gives her a deep bow before he takes a seat on the bench, and the girl grins brightly at him, giving him a regal wave in return. He sees Virgil glance at him out of the corner of his eye, but he doesn’t say anything. Neither does Roman. Instead, the two of them sit in companionable silence and watch families, couples, and individuals bustle around for their last-minute Christmas gifts.
People watching had always left Roman feeling vaguely uncomfortable, especially around the holidays. In the back of his mind, he realizes it’s mostly when he notices families and couples holding hands that he gets that odd feeling in his chest again. He doesn’t know what it means. It’s like a part of him is reaching out for something that he cannot find, or that he does not know how to name.
“Don’t think so hard, Princey,” Virgil chimes lightly. “You might blow a fuse.”
Roman huffs an affronted breath. “Excuse you, thinking is my specialty.”
“Is that what you were doing when you sang Mariah Carey at the top of your lungs that one Thursday—”
“As a matter of fact, it was!”
“All the more reason you should do less of it, then.”
“Oh, you’re one to talk, Charlie Frown.” There’s no real bite in Roman’s voice. The familiarity of the banter with Virgil eases some of the discomfort from a moment ago. Virgil pulls his hands out of his pockets to hold them up in mock surrender.
When he really thinks about it, Roman figures it’s a bit of an odd relationship. Just over a year ago, Roman really only knew Virgil as someone from his English 100 class. Now? Well. Roman considers Virgil his best friend. It had been a fast year: a whirlwind of undergraduate classes and exams and papers, a summer internship for Roman in New York with a magazine and one for Virgil at home with a graphic design company. They’d visited each other twice that summer, and though Roman would never admit it, he was certain that was the only thing that kept him sane.
The start of their sophomore year, Roman and Virgil both had abysmal roommates and elected to move in together. More tests, more essays, more stress. Another set of finals. And then suddenly it was Christmas break. And Virgil had acted like the idea that Roman was going with him to Maine was a given—something that was really saving grace for Roman, who wouldn’t have dared to ask.
From his very first time meeting them a year ago, Roman loved Virgil’s dads. They were everything his parents hadn’t been, and a shining example of the kind of love Roman hoped to find with a guy one day himself. But every time Roman was near Virgil and his parents…. It left an odd weight on his shoulders. As if Roman was trying to squeeze into a space he wasn’t actually wanted in.
“What?” Virgil asks suddenly, from beside him.
“What?”
Virgil shrugs, his gaze flickering back to look at the people bustling by when Roman looks over to meet his gaze. “I know that look, Roman.”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Virgil arcs an eyebrow and looks at him again. “They’re glad you’re here. They’re not just, like… tolerating it, or whatever. You know that, right?”
Roman freezes for a second, then tries to recover. “Who? My adoring fanbase?” He waves at a baby that is staring at him with huge eyes beneath a beanie cap in a stroller as his mother talks with a friend.
But for some reason, Virgil doesn’t seem willing to let it go. “My dads.”
Roman glances quickly at him. “I know.”
“Do you?”
Virgil’s question doesn’t get answered as they both see Logan emerge from the bookshop with a bag in his hands and starts towards them. Roman finds himself grateful for the interruption. But he doesn’t miss the quick glance that Virgil throws his way anyway.
December 23. 8:01 PM.
Patton stands in the middle of the living room, the lights from the Christmas tree reflecting in the lens of his glasses, and steeples his fingers in front of his face. He looks thoughtfully at the otherwise bare tree, and Roman can see the wheels of thought turning in his head from his position on the couch.
“I think,” he says slowly, “that it needs more lights—”
“Absolutely not,” Logan interrupts flatly and immediately. “Patton, you put six strands of lights on that tree. I draw the line at seven.”
Virgil snorts from where he’s sitting at the bottom of the steps. He’s got both hands wrapped around a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Roman’s sits on the coffee table. He likes to let his marshmallows soak for a moment before he drinks it. He’s got a red blanket pulled across his lap.
“We do have one more strand,” Virgil says with a mischievous look in his eyes. “Seems like it would be a waste to just not put it on the tree at this point.”
Logan shoots a look at his son as Patton gasps. “Exactly! We can’t have one lonely strand left, Logan.”
Logan releases a long, suffering sigh, but even he can’t contain the faint glimmer of amusement in his eyes as he looks otherwise stoically at his husband. “Very well. Why you insist on personifying inanimate objects but refuse to do so when it resembles a human form, I may never understand—”
“Is this still about me eating the gingerbread man last year?”
A beat of silence. “Perhaps.”
“He’s made of gingerbread, Logan.” Patton grabs the strand left untangled on the floor and hands one end to his husband. “He wants to be eaten. It makes him feel fulfilled.”
“I see.”
Patton and Logan work together to wrap and connect the final strand of lights around the base of the tree. Patton beams, satisfied at their work, as Logan steps around and snakes an arm around his husband’s waist, pulling him in and kissing the top of his head. He then turns his attention to the green storage container sitting beside the coffee table. He pops the lid off to reveal it’s contents—shrouded in brown and tissue paper. Ornaments. Apparently, sentimental ones.
Virgil pulls himself to his feet as Logan sits on the couch and Patton sits cross-legged on the floor. Roman decides to take his cue from his friend and tosses the blanket off his legs, standing up as well.
“Aw, I remember this one!” Patton exclaims as he unwraps one of the ornaments. “Logan, this was from the first time we spent Christmas together.”
Logan gingerly takes the square ornament from his husband’s hands and dangles it from one of his fingers. Roman can see a picture of Patton and Logan together inside of it. “Yes,” Logan muses. “I remember this. We were sophomores in college. You’d heard about my… situation and asked if I wanted to join you for the holidays.” He casts a quick but gentle look at his husband before turning his attention to the tree and carefully selecting a branch to loop through the string.
“And this was from our vacation two years ago,” Patton explains, carefully finding the hook at the top to hand off to Virgil.
Virgil makes a face as he takes it. “Was this from that one middle-of-nowhere restaurant that gave me food poisoning?”
Logan studies it for a moment from across the room, then pushes the frame of his glasses up his nose a bit. “No,” he says. “That one is from the Christmas Tree farm in Vermont that your dad wanted to stop at in the middle of July.”
“It’s never too early to celebrate Christmas—Oh!” Patton cuts himself off as he unwraps the tissue paper from another one. “Virge, remember this?” Patton brandishes the blue and purple sphere to show his son before he hands it off to Roman.
Roman takes it reverently, arching an eyebrow at Virgil. The corner of Virgil’s mouth quirks in an affectionate smile at the object in Roman’s hands. “Yep,” Virgil says.
“It was the first Christmas gift you ever got me,” Patton says. “Your first year with us.”
Virgil huffs a faint, embarrassed laugh. “Not my best gift.”
“You had only known us for a few months,” Logan replies. “We were all getting to know one another still. You could not have been expected to get a particularly personal gift. And besides, it now holds significant sentimental value.”
Roman glances down at it. It was relatively unassuming—a perfect sphere, swirls of blue and purple colors, and the year it was bought printed in silver calligraphy—but Roman is careful when he hangs it off a branch. He loops the pine through the yarn tied at the top of it and stops a moment to ensure it will hold securely before he turns his attention away from it. Patton is already explaining and reminiscing about another ornament that he’s slowly handing off to Logan.
Roman can tell from the fond if slightly rote responses from Logan and Virgil that Patton’s rehashing of memories through these ornaments was probably a regular event whenever they decorated the tree. Roman hardly minds. He listens to Patton’s stories with more than polite silence—he enjoys them. Last year, Patton and Logan had waited until Virgil was there to decorate the tree as well. But Roman had elected to help Patton with some things in the kitchen so that he could lead the tree decorating. He hadn’t really elected to take part in it.
He felt like he was witnessing a surprisingly intimate moment with this family and the odd feeling from early returns to his chest. It squeezes a little harder this time, and Roman feels out of place and uncertain. Like he’s intruding.
“I think that’s it,” Patton says nearly an hour later, peering into the empty storage box from his place on the floor.
“Hold on,” Virgil says. “I’ve got one more.” The college student rushes from around the tree and disappears up the stairs. Logan quirks an eyebrow at Roman, who simply shakes his head. He has no idea what Virgil is talking about.
Moments later, Virgil comes back down the steps. Hanging from his forefinger is a gold string loop fastened to a small ornament. A red car. One that looks remarkably like—
“Wait,” Roman says, frowning.
“Look, it’s the closest I could find,” Virgil says with a slight shrug. “It’s supposed to be Maximus.”
Roman stares at Virgil, confused. He, evidently, isn’t the only one. “The horse from Tangled?” Patton asks from behind them, having not moved from his position sitting cross-legged on the floor.
“My car,” Roman replies, but he still doesn’t understand. Why did Virgil get an ornament version of his car?
Virgil carefully threads it onto one of the few unadorned branches towards the top of the tree. “Yeah,” he replies easily. “A reminder of last year. Your first Christmas with us.”
Roman stares at it as Virgil steps back to survey the addition. Roman feels his friend nudge him with his elbow, but he can’t speak past the sudden lump in his throat. He doesn’t think he’d trust himself to speak right now anyway.
“I think it’s great,” Patton chimes in thoughtfully. “I had been looking for some way to add you to our Christmas memories when we were shopping today but nothing seemed to fit.”
Logan gives an affirming nod. “Agreed. I had been doing the same without success. Although sentimental ornaments are, admittedly, not my strong suit. That is a more than satisfactory addition to the family Christmas tree.”
“More than satisfactory?” Virgil quips teasingly. “Well, now you know you’re an approved Sanders.” Logan rolls his eyes in response.
But Roman still doesn’t know what to say. The red car ornament looks like it fits. It blends into the wide assortment of random objects and shapes that had been turned into ornaments full of meaning and memory. And all Roman can do is look at it and realize that they all wanted to place Roman amidst that smattering of love put on display in their living room.
“I… are you sure?” Roman finds himself asking, in a voice that sounds too small to be his own.
He’s not really asking about the ornament. An ornament is a temporary seasonal decoration but it feels very permanent to Roman. A part of him tries to tell himself that he’s reading too much into it, but he knows. He listened to Patton share memories about every single object on that tree, he saw the warmth in all of their eyes with each one that got added and Roman knows—even if a part of him wants to deny it—that being added to this tree signifies a lot more than just. Decoration.
So he asks. Are you sure?
“Of course we’re sure, kiddo,” Patton says as he pushes himself to his feet. He steps up beside Roman and wraps an arm around his shoulders, pulling him in for a moment.
“Roman,” Logan adds, both serious and uncharacteristically gentle, “you have a place here. With us. For as long as you want it.” Startled, Roman glances at Virgil’s father. There’s something aged and knowing in his eyes and Roman suddenly feels more seen than he has in a very, very long time. He blinks quickly against the heat in his eyes and tries to clear his throat.
“I…” Roman tries.
“And we hope you’ll want it for a long time,” Patton adds with a small squeeze to Roman’s shoulders. “Because like it or not, you’re part of this family now. The tree is just…” Patton trails off, waving a hand at it, seemingly at a loss for how to explain his point.
“It’s a symbol,” Virgil adds in. “Of what’s already been true for a while now.” He’s giving Roman a quiet, knowing look. Almost a placid I told you so.
Roman casts a look towards Virgil and hopes he understands everything he isn’t sure how to say in this moment. “Thank you,” Roman says, despite the gap between the words and what he means behind them. They are the only words that come to mind. He wishes he could think of more.
Patton laughs slightly—warm and reassuring—and gives Roman one more squeeze before he lets go. Roman glances at Logan, seeing him smile faintly and incline his head. There’s a brief pause of silence before Virgil jumps in.
“So. About that gingerbread house?”
December 24. 9:40 PM.
“Roman! Get in here!”
Roman rolls his eyes at Virgil’s teasingly aggressive shout from the living room, then laughs at Patton’s immediate admonishment. He finishes pouring the popcorn into the large bowl before tossing the bag into the trash.
“You got it?” Logan asks, standing beside him as he slides the tray of hot chocolates off the counter to balance on his arms. Roman has to stop himself from laughing at the man—Roman wasn’t sure he’d ever quite get used to seeing Virgil’s father in a unicorn onesie. But somehow, Patton had convinced them all to wear them in the name of tradition.
Roman’s had been a slightly-early Christmas present from Patton. His new Beauty and the Beast themed garment was now his favorite thing he owned.
Roman picks up the bowl and nods. “Yeah. I’m good. You good?” He nods to the tray balanced across Logan’s arm.
Logan smiles. “I have enough practice from my barista days. Let’s not keep them waiting any longer.”
The two of them head out from the kitchen and into the living room. Virgil is sitting on the floor in his skeleton onesie with a violet blanket pulled across his lap. Patton sits on the floor beside him—in a cat onesie of his own—and thanks Logan when his husband hands him one of the mugs from the tray. Roman sits on the couch, folding his legs up as he lowers the bowl of popcorn into Virgil’s lap in front of him. There’s an exchange of mugs, snacks, and light teasing as everyone settles in.
“So what are we watching?” Roman asks as Logan loads the DVD.
“Muppets Christmas Carol.” Patton reaches for the remote to adjust the volume up a bit in preparation.
“It’s the best of all worlds,” Virgil adds in.
“Yes,” Logan muses, padding to the light-switch to turn off the lights in the room as the movie starts up. “Virgil’s favorite holiday story is Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Patton’s fond of the Muppets. I appreciate some of the more sophisticated humor. And I have a feeling you will be fond of the music in this movie.”
“Watching this is a tradition,” Patton adds. “We just didn’t get to last year given… circumstances.”
Virgil cranes his neck back to look at Roman on the couch above him as Logan takes a seat beside Roman. “That’s one thing about this family. So. Many. Traditions. So get ready. There’s no going back now.” He says it lightly. Easily. And Roman knows without asking that Virgil is a far cry from complaining about it.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Roman says with a small but sincere smile. “I’m right where I want to be.”
He sees Logan smile a bit from behind his mug as he takes a sip. Patton glances over at him. “Good. You’re a perfect fit.”

Your POV
Music blasted in your headphones as you made your way through the halls towards your English class. Your fingers were wrapped tightly around your backpack straps, tucked into your sides to avoid bumping into anyone. Getting to English class was always the worst part of the day since you had to walk all the way from one end of the school to the other through crowds of juniors and seniors who were just getting back from lunch, hence the tucked in arms and loud music to move quickly and drown everything out.
You were relieved when you finally made it to the English hall. There were only a few kids hanging out outside of their classrooms, mostly talking to friends and putting off going to class as long as they could. They hardly gave you a second glance as you walked past and ducked into your own classroom.
You started to head for your seat out of habit until you realized that Julie was sitting in it, scrolling idly through her phone. Confused, you turned towards the projector to see if there was some warm up activity about sitting at a different table. Your stomach practically dropped when you realized that there was a new seating chart. You had just gotten comfortable enough to make small talk with the people you had previously been sitting with.
After a minute or so of working out how the seating chart was aligned, you figured out where your new seat was and sat down in it. Your table partner, Tyler, had already arrived and was scribbling something down in a bent notebook. He glanced up at you and smiled as you took a seat, but didn’t say anything.
Probably because of the headphones.
You snuck a glance at Tyler when he seemed particularly wrapped up in whatever he was doing. The two of you had never talked before, but you knew a little about him. He was one of the kids from the other middle school that a couple of your friends had gone to; they were always talking about how they had huge crushes on him in seventh grade, but he had never really been interested. You could see why they thought he was cute, his eyes were nice and the brief smile he had given you was enough to make your stomach flip. That, and he played basketball; that was always a bonus in your friends’ eyes.
He started to turn in your direction, so you quickly made yourself busy by unzipping your backpack and pulling out your designated english notebook. The front was already covered in doodles from the friend that you used to sit next to in this class, but now she was on the other side of the room. From the looks of it, she was having no problem making friends with the new people that she was sitting with. Your table, on the other hand, was largely ignoring each other’s existence.
When the bell finally rang, you paused your music and tucked your headphones away into your pocket. You were only a few months into the school year and had already received numerous warnings about listening to music in class. Mr. Brown had even said that if he caught you one more time, there would be detention involved. You weren’t really looking to have to explain that to your parents… or Carter, for that matter.
“Alright, class! Good morning! I’m happy to see that all of you were able to find your new seats,” Mr. Brown said, making his way towards the front of the room. “I will be using that to take attendance today, so please make sure that you are sitting in the correct spot so that you don’t get marked absent. While I do that, I would like you to take a few minutes to introduce yourselves to your table members. You will be working closely together during the next unit, so I want you to at least know each other’s names. Go ahead.”
You slid a little farther down in your seat, not wanting to be the first to introduce yourself. Thankfully, Tyler was more than willing to start everyone off.
“Hi, my name is Tyler.”
He looked to you and raised his eyebrows. You cleared your throat and sat up a little straighter.
“Y/N,” you said, forcing a smile.
The rest of the table introduced themselves and then went quiet, getting back on their phones or making faces at their friends across the room. You idly tapped your pencil against the cover of your notebook.
“What music were you listening to?” Tyler asked.
The question took you by surprise. Sure, your friends had told you that he was talkative at times, but you never really expected him to talk to you. You stopped leaning on your hand and turned to face him.
“Oh, you know, just random stuff,” you said, too embarrassed to give him the actual answer.
“That’s cool,” he nodded.
“Do you… ever… listen to music?”
Really?
“Yeah, I’m really into music.”
“Who do you listen to?”
Tyler shrugged and leaned back in his chair. “I think The Killers and Death Cab for Cutie are my favorites right now, but it’s always changing.”
“My brother really likes The Killers, he’s constantly playing their music while he does homework.”
“Same, I listen to their music when I practice basketball, usually.”
“You play basketball?”
Yes. You already knew the answer.
“Yeah, I’ve been playing since I was little.”
“Are you going to try out for the basketball team?”
You were surprised by how easy conversation with Tyler was becoming. Maybe it was the encouraging smile on his face or the fact that he hardly even blinked when you were stumbling over your words. Either way, you were beginning to be thankful for the seating arrangement change.
“I’m thinking about it, but I’m not sure that I would be good enough.”
“It’s worth a shot, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, you’re right,” he smiled. “I guess I don’t want people to think I got picked just because my dad is the varsity coach.”
“Easy, just make sure you’re actually good at basketball,” you laughed.
“I am, don’t worry.”
You were about to make a joke about his cocky attitude, but the teacher grabbed everyone’s attention again and started to talk about what he had planned for the day. Tyler smiled at you over his shoulder before turning and paying attention.
This was definitely turning out better than you had anticipated.
Tumblr media
Tyler’s POV
“Alright, I’m going to give you the last ten minutes of class to silently work on next week’s short story assignment! If you have any questions, I’ll be at my desk.”
Silent? That wasn’t going to work.
I glanced over at Y/N, who had already written a few sentences at the top of her page. Her hand was moving quickly across the page, writing sentences that looked much neater than mine would if I ever started writing. I would much rather sit and talk to her, but there was no way I would be able to get away with it during silent writing time. There had to be some other way that I could keep up a conversation.
I quietly ripped out a sheet of notebook paper and pulled off the perforated bit on the side. Across the top, I wrote down a question for her to answer as an icebreaker.
What are you writing about?
I folded the paper in half and made sure that Mr. Brown was turned towards his computer before sliding it to her. She stopped writing and glanced at the piece of paper. With furrowed eyebrows, she unfolded it and scanned the question I had written. I watched as she wrote out her answer, folded the note, and slid it back to me.
It’s kind of hard to explain, but basically there’s this city that all these people are stuck in and they try to escape. Only one of them is successful though. I don’t know, it’s kind of stupid and I’m not explaining it very well. What are you writing?
Stupid? That didn’t sound stupid at all. I made sure to write that down.
I don’t think that’s stupid at all, it sounds really cool. I’m not really sure yet, any ideas?
Y/N took a moment to finish her sentence before grabbing the paper and reading my new note. She pursed her lips and took a moment to think before answering, trying - and failing - to conceal a smile as she wrote back. It was cute.
Wait, what?
What if you write about a castle that’s under attack by something ridiculous? Like a giant pineapple or something?
Now I understood why she was smiling. We shared a look before I started to write back. It had to be funny, that way I would get to see her smile again; something about it made my stomach fill with butterflies.
And once they destroy it they celebrate by making piña coladas for the entire town?
I passed the note back to her. She opened it and smiled.
Success.
Before she had a chance to pass it back to me, there was the sound of footsteps behind us. The two of us turned around to see Mr. Brown standing behind us, his hands clasped in front of him. In our excitement over the story idea, we had failed to keep an eye on him and make sure he wasn’t paying attention. Wordlessly, he bent down and picked up our note. He was nice enough to read it silently.
“I’m expecting you to come up with your own ideas, Mr. Joseph, but you should be thankful that Ms. Y/L/N is nice enough to help you.”
“Thanks,” I said, turning to her. She tried so hard to conceal a laugh that she ended up snorting.
“Back to work, you two.”
I didn’t make a second attempt at trying to pass her a note, not wanting to get her in trouble for my bad decisions. Her ideas had helped me create my own, though, and I was able to spend the last five minutes of class writing a couple paragraphs.
“I want to actually thank you,” I said as I started to put things into my backpack. The bell had just rung and the entire class was filled with the sounds of shuffling paper and zippers. “I didn’t use the pineapple idea, but it did help me come up with something.”
“I’m glad I was able to help,” she smiled as she pushed an earbud into her ear.
“Also, you should totally listen to Death Cab for Cutie and let me know what you think.”
“I think I’ll do that.”
I could see that she was eager to go and I was the only reason she was hanging behind. Not wanting to keep her longer, I said a simple, “I’ll talk to you next class.”
“Bye, Tyler.”
She put her other earbud in and walked out of the room without another word. I finished packing up my things and walked into the hall to meet up with Nick, who had just finished his own english class.
“How was class?” he asked.
“Really good. We got a new seating arrangement and I’m sitting next to this really cool girl.”
“Oh yeah? Is she cute?”
“It’s not like that,” I said. “She just seems like someone I would want to be friends with.”
“You can be friends with cute girls, you know.”
I shook my head, although my cheeks were already getting hot. “Ok, yeah, she’s cute.”
“I knew it!” Nick laughed. “Still, that’s really cool.”
“Yeah.”
For the first time ever, I was looking forward to the next time I had english.

Diego/Antonio Teaching MC Spanish Headcanons
Since you guys seemed to like the Arabic post with Razi (link here), I thought it was about time I do this one as well. Enjoy!
Diego
MC constantly fucks with him and purposely messes up just to amuse herself
Don’t even mention how many times she’s sung Despacito
it’s atrocious, really
“Diego, estoy caliente”
“Tengo calor, for the fifth time, it’s tengo calor!”
Diego knows she’s just screwing with him, but so help him God if he has to hear her say “Estoy embarazada” one more time—
to be completely honest, he’s not even sure if she knows she’s saying that one wrong too
ser and estar are.... challenges, to say the least
along with that, he’s naturally just teaching her Castillian Spanish when she’s more used to Latin American
now usually, that’s not a problem
until...
“MC, voy a coger un taxi”
“I’m sorry you’re going to what a taxi—?“
It’s the little things
You’d think Diego would be more aware of these dialect differences (seeing as he was part of the cause of them) but he somehow just doesn’t
So now he has to explain that, no MC, he is not going to fuck a taxi, and that no, he doesn’t know why that specific verb changed so drastically over 500 years
MC’s pronunciation is decent, and he hangs onto that one comfort at the very least
even if she has a hard time grasping the importance of accents
“MC, años has to have the ñ, there’s no option to exclude it”
“I know it’s there, just take my word for it”
“Just make sure to write it down, please”
“It doesn’t seem that important though”
oh how wrong she was in that statement
for the rest of the night, Diego had to explain to her that instead of writing “I’m 23 years old” she wrote “I have 23 anuses”
it was an eventful night
it still amazes him how, despite her cute (but constant) mistakes, she manages to nail curse words every, single, time
this especially flourishes during moments of road rage
MC (whilst honking aggresively in the car): CHINGA TU MADRE PINCHE PENDEJO
Diego (with whiplash): ¿QUE?
however, regardless of the many fuck-ups (and overwhelming awkward explanations), the two have fun and actually make progress
sometimes, MC can have a whole, stable conversation with him completely in Spanish
the others in Havenfall’s Finest watch with amazement as the two start having conversations half in Spanish and half in English without even realizing it, only after a few months of learning
and of course, the more amorous conversations are especially prominent as well
they settle on the term “mi amor”, and ignore JD gagging exaggeratedly in disgust whenever they do
it’s simple, but no matter how basic the term is, it will never lose the effect MC always experiences when she hears them from him
Antonio
his teaching style is much more casual
he’s also much more aware of dialect differences, and manages to explain them to MC pretty efficiently
because of this the “coger” crisis was averted rather quickly
he knows when she’s messing with him just like Diego
only, his approach to combat it is a little bit different
MC: Estoy embarazada
Antonio: ¿Verdad? ¿Cuando es tu fecha de vencimiento?
MC: What now
Antonio: Pues, la fecha de vencimiento. ¿Es un niño o niña?
yeah she didn’t try to mess with him again after that
he actually kept the joke up even after that and only stopped when she finally said “No estoy embarazada”
although, when she purposely made the intentional mistake of saying, “Estoy caliente” things got much more.... well, heated
what’s spicier, a hot cheeto or Antonio’s dick because the world may never know
back to his teaching style
like with everything, he’s cunning about it
he only says sentences in Spanish or makes her try and figure out a sentence if he’s confident she’ll get it
and most of the time, his guesses are correct, and she ends up feeling proud of herself and is much more willing to try speaking on her own
plus he also likes feeling her absolutely beam down the emotional connection when she gets something right but he’s a bad bitch so he won’t admit it
it’s his form of encouragement in a way
and even though the bond certainly helps, he’s almost scarily effective at knowing exactly how to teach MC
she ends up carrying whole conversations in just a month or two
he more or less cracked the code kind of
he understands how she processes information, and thus makes it easier for her to actually retain all of it
Example
“Ok, but why does the word for pregnant sound like the word for embarassed, it’s just a little too uncanny”
“Well think of this. What’s an embargo?”
“It’s when ships can’t leave a station or something, right?”
“I don’t know you, tell me”
“You’re the ex-conquistador here”
“Touché. But what does that mean the ships are? What’s the verb of embargo, and embargar?”
“Theyre.... embarred”
“Exactly.”
“Oh my God. Pregnancy is just a fetus embargo.”
“Bingo.”
......
He never said she had a normal way of understanding things
But does any of this mean he’s the better teacher between him and Diego?
Well
Not necessarily
If anything, MC’s vocabulary for swears only increases under his guidance
Sometimes she’ll learn just from listening to him curse
Other times he will intentionally teach her some nasty-ass phrase
“Que te folle un pez” was his personal favorite
And of course, one of the first ones she learned was “Me cago en la leche” after Antonio said it towards a very confused Victor
He actually cackled and applauded her one time when MC pointed to Victor and said “Gilipolla” completely unprovoked
Victor, however, was still very, very confused
And of course, with how extra Antonio is, he uses more pet names than MC can keep track of
she stopped counting when he somehow hit double digits
she didn’t even think there WERE that many pet names in one language to be honest
“cariño”, “cielo”, “mi corazón”, “mi vida”, “amada”, etc. etc. etc.
seriously, it’s borderline ridiculous
And that’s all I have for this! I hope you found it enjoyable and maybe even learned something from it! 💕

R - Are you introverted, extroverted, or ambiverted?
i’d say i’m ambiverted. i need to have an up-down sort of thing. when i’m not around people for too long it tires me out but when i’m around people TOO LONG it also tires me out
S - Do you think before you speak?
is it bad to say no? a lot of the time i tend to think out loud and that makes me seem like i think fast and am eloquent except for when the thought’s half-formed or not in any way a good one and it makes me look like a dumbass
T - What’s one thing you’re certain is true?
i would not have become a writer who actually finishes things without an outlet like ao3 where i can receive feedback. i’ve come up with ideas and written snippets of stories as far back as i can remember but i never actually finished something until i had an apparatus for feedback

no plans but taking an exam and attending a dress rehearsal
Th - Would you care to learn Greek?
definitely! i would learn any language if i had the time and the drive
Ě - What’s your stance on marriage?
i think that it can be really important to people, it is an important legal right that brings certain benefits, and that it should be available to all consenting adult pairs that would like to marry each other (at least pairs, i don’t know the logistics of poly marriage yet and haven’t thought about that yet and whether or not multiple marriages or marriages with more than two parties is feasible) but i also feel like because it’s just a construct and if they don’t WANT to get married couples shouldn’t feel obligated to.
i don’t feel like it should be your be all end all if you don’t want it to be.
i also feel since it’s a legal institution people shouldn’t feel obligated to keep it solely between romantic partners! if you want to marry your best friend for the benefits or to make a life commitment to them, i say go for it! marriage is what you make it and it’s mainly an agreement so like, agree to what you want and just be happy
X - Does anyone in your family have a different native language than you?
nope. you have to go out to great great grandparents on any side of my family before you get to people who didn’t speak english as a first language
Ç - How often is your name misspelt?
about a third of the time people spell it as sara
tagging @khaki-da @titaniumsansa @marielogan and anyone else who’d like to do it!

I will wear jeans in hell
1. Do you think it’s rude when people speak slowly when talking to people that don’t know English well? No, it’s helpful, especially if the english speaking person has an accent the other person isn’t used to. I wish people would speak slower to me in spanish. The worst is when you ask them to speak slower and they repeat the exact same thing at the exact same speed. Speak slower but don’t be condescending.
2. What’s irritating you right now? My heater isn’t warm enough and my feet are cold.
3. Do you feel comfortable with answering personal questions? Depends on the question. I like telling stories about myself and my life but I don’t enjoy getting into emotions and stuff.
4. Would you ever sleep with someone to get a job? Depends on the job and who I have to sleep with.
5. Would you ever travel by yourself? I have, several times. And I will again at the end of the month when I go to Paris, although I’m hoping to be able to meet up with someone to go to Disneyland with.
6. When was the last time you consumed alcohol? I had a beer yesterday I think. Or maybe it was the day before, idk
7. When will you see your best friend next? January at the absolute earliest
8. Have you ever broken a bone? No
9. Would you introduce the last person you kissed to your parents? Sure, but not as my partner
10. Are any of your friends virgins? Yeah

12. If you could seek revenge on someone would you? There was one person I was pretty cranky at for a while but I don’t care anymore.
13. What plans do you have for tomorrow? No plans. I would go grocery shopping but tomorrow is sunday so everything will be closed.
14. What time did you wake up? I woke up to construction sounds and got annoyed because it was way too early for that kind of noise but I looked at my phone and it was 11:30. Still went back to sleep for another hour though.
15. Have you ever found a bug in your food? I have this one memory as a kid I had had a sleepover at my friend’s house and in the morning we were having breakfast in his dad’s cafe next door and I got pancakes and there was a wasp in it. I didn’t actually care, I ate around it.
16. What is most of your junk email from? Currently mostly from Dick Smith and a job search website

19. What is one skill you would like to have, but don’t want to work towards? Probably something super boring like knowing how to be an accountant or something. It would be useful to have for jobs and stuff but so boring to actually achieve.
20. Do you have letters of the alphabet that you like? Which ones? Not in english, but in spanish I like ñ because I like drawing the squiggle and also x because it’s pronounced differently depending which country you’re in.
21. If you could pick one topic for everyone in your country to learn more about, what would you pick? For australia, human rights and ethics so that they can start treating aboriginals and asylum seekers with a bit more respect.

26. Who was the last person you heard snore? Panama guy
27. Do you think it’s possible for an 18 year old to be ready to get married? I think you should experience the real world before you commit to something like marriage. But hey, to each their own.
28. Have you ever had a dream about someone on tv, or a show? What happened? Yeah many times but the dream that comes to mind I had while I was in Colombia. I dreamt that I was on a yacht making out with Henry Cavill.
29. Have you ever taken a nap in an unusual or especially uncomfortable place, i.e. on top of your keyboard, under a table, etc? When I was at uni I would curl up in the bay window at the end of the aisle in the library and nap in the sunbeam. I have slept in trains and buses on terribly bumpy roads. I can even sleep on planes now. I’ve definitely napped on some floors, maybe head down on some tables too. Look, I just really like sleep okay and I can always do with a nap when I travel.
30. What was the scent of the last lotion you used? It was just one from the grocery store. It has argon oil in it which I assume gives it a certain smell.

32. When was the last time you had a headache? No idea, I don’t get headaches very often and if I do they’re minor so I wouldn’t remember anyway
33. Is anyone jealous of you? I hope so. Half the reason I use instagram is to make everyone I went to highschool with jealous of my current life.
34. What was the last thing you had to mentally prepare yourself for? that would have been for quitting that telemarketing job.
35. What’s something you’re currently dreading? Not finding a job and having to organise a move back to australia
36. If your living space could smell like anything in the world, but it would ALWAYS smell that way and you could never change it, what would you choose for it to smell like? I don’t know. Maybe citrus, or baked goods?
37. What’s something you wish were taught when you were in school? Actual life skills.
38. How would you describe your sense of humor? Varied. But mostly I like goofy, wholesome humour where nobody is the butt of the joke and nobody gets hurt.
39. Do you ever notice other people’s body language when you’re speaking with them? Sometimes
40. Is there a meal you simply cannot eat if it’s missing something (a salad without croutons, a sandwich without cheese, etc)? No..? I’ll eat just about anything
41. Is there something that other people see/hear and automatically think of you? You would have to ask those other people

46. Do you have a friend that has a tendency to “dump” you whenever they get a new partner? One friend did that for a while. He would stop hanging out with me whenever he started dating someone. But then he got a long term boyfriend and got better about managing his time between his partner and his friends.
47. Would you ever want to go on vacation with just one of your parents? I have travelled a few times with my mum. I get a little frustrated travelling with dad though.

50. How many cans of soda would you say you drink in a week, if any at all? When I lived in australia I had a can of pepsi max a day bc it was my caffeine hit for work. Now I buy a 2L bottle of coke zero maybe once a week. Probably works out about the same tbh
51. When you’re at home, do you spend most of your time in your room? I live alone so I get the whole place to myself. I only spend time in my bed/bedroom for sleep
52. If you like to sleep in late, have your parents ever told you off for doing so? Ugh my dad was so annoying about that. I was a nigthshift worker and yet he still found it weird that I preferred to sleep in to any time after 10am. Like, dude, I only go to bed at 7am. There’s no way in hell I’m getting up any time before 2pm. Now my brother works those hours and I’m sure he gets the same crap from dad.
53. How much stuff do you take with you when you go on vacation for a week? If it’s warm weather, I can pack for a week in my backpack and won’t have to do laundry. 60. What happened last time you got drunk? I drank at home and watched Star Wars. That was it.

94. Did you waste your first kiss, or did it mean something to you? Do you think that people should save their first kisses just like their virginity? It meant something to me at the time, I don’t care now. People can do whatever they want with regards to their first kiss or their virginity.
95. Do you know anyone who has had salmonella? Did you ever have it yourself? What about e coli? One of my work friends got salmonella and it hit while she was on shift. How I Write Baybayin (Handwriting and Straight-cut Nib Calligraphy) Subtitle: This is a freaking long-ass post so be warned now
You can read the entirety of this post as is, or you can go straight to the calligraphy portion. It’s at the end of the post (sorry dunno how to link that portion here).
Writer’s Note: First and foremost, I will advise everyone who reads this somewhat master post that I am not an authority when it comes to how baybayin is written, as what you shall be reading is just based mostly on my own experiences on how the characters are written and comparing them with other writing systems that are based on syllables rather than individual letters, like the Japanese Kana and the Korean Hangul, among others. This is because baybayin are not technically letters (individualized, can’t stand alone, only comes either as vowel or consonant but not both, you get the picture), but rather are syllables (i.e. the consonants have free vowels with them lol) that form words.
Also, as far as I know regarding how the baybayin texts are originally written pre-Hispanic colonization era, some of the written texts in the Philippines (or at least, those that survived, or I remember seeing in old history books) were written from right to left, top to bottom. This also coincides with other writing methods in some parts of Asia that also read from right to left. The technique of writing and reading from left to right may be a Western invention, in my opinion so I just did some of the strokes in the baybayin characters go from right to left, except for the straight-cut nib section. Again, I am no authority so I’m just doing what I think makes sense to me, as there is no existing ANCIENT written rules on the stroke order of the baybayin. Other people may disagree with my stroke orders here due to various reasons, but if you’re into what I did then feel free to learn from them, for free. *heart*
This author’s other notes: I won’t be elaborating the history of baybayin here because that would take around (counts how many years I spent in school) 5ever as it basically intertwines with the “current” history of the Filipino people. I put quotes on “current” because every decade or so, some written histories get re-written based on some evidences or what, and I totally respect that. It’s like in scientific papers: legit today, debunked tomorrow. And it’s completely OK, because THE MORE YOU KNOW~
Also this author’s note: I keep calling baybayin alibata, because that’s what they were called when I was a kid and how it was taught by history teachers before the process called “being politically-correct” became the norm. It’s because alibata was supposedly an incorrect term which signifies that the characters were letters based on Arabic, but apparently it wasn’t so.. Yeah. I’m just saying, so the kiddies would know. And if you’re like me who also refers to baybayin as alibata, let’s get a high-five! (Cause you’re also old, but gold =D) Some biased history FTW lol ok let’s get started.
Handwriting Alibata Baybayin Strokes with a Bamboo pen (or Ballpen, or Pencil, w/e floats your boat)
OK, before I start I would be first putting here the somewhat traditional ordering of the baybayin, which is:
A BA KA DA E GA HA I LA MA NA NGA O PA RA SA TA U WA YA
As well as the borrowed/loan syllables (which correspond to C, F, J, Ñ, Q, V, X, and Z were apparently added some 6-7 years ago, in which I didn’t get the memo x__x)
CA FA JA ÑA QA VA XA ZA
OK, now that’s out of the way, it’s time for the actual stuff. For ease of practice and recall, I’m grouping the letters based on how I write them and in turn, their forms. This would make sense as the pictures move along, don’t worry. The forms are built sequentially, I tried making that a bit obvious in the diagrams, but there are red arrows in case I wasn’t that clear. For those that only have one picture or arrows in the sequence, I would be implying that the form is built on a single stroke.
Group 1: A, MA, PA, YA, FA, JA, VA
OK, let’s start with A:
Tumblr media
Then MA:
Tumblr media
PA:
Tumblr media
YA:
Tumblr media
FA:
Tumblr media
JA:
Tumblr media
VA:
Tumblr media
Group 2:  E/I (more on that later), KA, DA, HA, RA, CA, QA, XA
I’ll start with HA because it’s a foundational stroke:
Tumblr media
E:
Tumblr media
I looks structurally like E, but only with a vertical stroke on its hat.
Tumblr media
It’s because originally, E and I were the same character and whether it should be read as a syllable from the E or I line depends on how the reader would read it and the dialect used in writing the words, like it’s a fill-in-the-blanks kind of thing.  It’s also the same with O and U, so if you see that part yeah they look alike. This is also the reason why revisions on writing the E-I and O-U consonants were made, but that would be for a later part. Just be patient for now. =D
Ok, moving on, we’ll go to KA:
Tumblr media
DA:
Tumblr media
RA:
Tumblr media
A short note on DA and RA: In olden times, these two were only one character, and are used interchangeably based on word usage, thus for words such as doon/roon, which both mean way over there one is used for passive and one is used directly (sorry not a speech comm person). This is also the case for marami and ang dami (both meaning “there are many/there is much” but one is active and one is passive. Madami is, IMHO grammatically incorrect. But then again, I’m not a speech comm person so sorry if these are wrong. I’m just saying).
CA:
Tumblr media
QA:
Tumblr media
XA:
Tumblr media
Group 3: O/U, GA, SA, ZA
Just like in E/I, O and U are also structurally similar. To make an O:
Tumblr media
To make it a U, just put a vertical line on the right side:
Tumblr media
GA:
Tumblr media
SA:
Tumblr media
ZA:
Tumblr media
Group 4: LA, NA, TA, ÑA
I grouped this bunch based on having a downward stroke in the middle of the form. The initial strokes are written as a single stroke from left to right, like in the first group.
LA:
Tumblr media
NA:
Tumblr media
TA:
Tumblr media
ÑA:
Tumblr media
Group 5: I have no idea where to put BA, NGA, and WA so I just made a miscellaneous group lol but they deserve just as much love OK?
BA:
Tumblr media
NGA:
Tumblr media
WA:
Tumblr media
How the E, I, O and U lines are written:
In writing E, I, O and U (as in the case for the example below, which is GE, GI, GO, and GU), the original positions of the additional marks (such as the vertical lines for I and U) were kept but in order to differentiate E from I and O from U, the marks were made to be further distinct. For instance, GE is basically GA which has a horizontal line above it, while GI has a dot above it. As for GO, it has a dot below and GU has a horizontal line.
Tumblr media
GI and GO can have either a hollowed dot like in the sample, or can also be filled like the samples below. It’s based on personal preference. Also I used G for the samples because it looks nice, fun to write, and most other examples of alibata on the internet use BA as their examples for this portion. Whoops, I meant, baybayin. XD
Tumblr media
Vowel Killers: Invented by People who Needed It
I’m not entirely sure why vowel killer was the term used but it does tell it exactly what it does: it silences the vowels in the characters (because baybayin is composed of syllables) in order to make separate letters. It was invented by some Spanish friar who couldn’t properly write the native words because words that have consonants at the end were written incompletely. I.E. the word DOON (over there) was written as DO-O in baybayin. It was such a drag that he decided to introduce the Spanish/Latin alphabet by making baybayin characters that acted as alphabets, which is essentially killing all the vowels and leaving the consonant behind. So instead of using dots, the friar made a cross underneath the symbol which they called a kudlit (for obviously non-secular reasons), so that the words with consonant ends can be written and read as they were. As per the revision that was instated a few years ago, in order to make the baybayin a bit more secular, more forms of the vowel killers were made, which in my opinion look better than the original kudlit, because they look more organic with the forms.
Tumblr media
As you can see in the pic of the letter G above, the first on the left is the original kudlit, which is shaped like a cross. The next one has an X, or sinawali (it’s literally based on the patterns of hard, woven rattan walls called sawali which look like X’s), the next one is called a kawil (sorry dunno where that came from) and the right-most one has a pamudpod (which may have come from the word “pudpod/pudpud” literally meaning grinding or repeatedly striking something on a hard surface or on a whetting stone till it disappears or becomes flat/dull, so pamudpod is the surface that makes the item pudpod like a used pencil or eraser. Do I even make sense anymore? Oh well, YOLO).
Stringing them All Together
My personal preference is using a kawil on horizontal writing (left to right) and using a pamudpod when writing vertically. I think the overall impact is better. But then again, it’s just my personal idea. Using any of the vowel killers are, like the filled or hollow dots on I and O are personal preferences, as long as there is consistency in usage.
Tumblr media
If you can read the above and understand where the reference came from, you probably also call baybayin as alibata, and we should totally get some tea together. XDD It pretty much means “What is there, yonder?” smth idk but yeah, it sounds like that. Old and formal Filipino/Tagalog.
Tumblr media
Langit -  sky or heaven, Lupa - ground or earth, Araw - sun, and Buwan (or Bulan in Ilokano) - moon
Tumblr media
Soliman - A variant of the name Sulaiman/Solomon
Amihan - the northeast monsoon, the nice wind that brings in cool, dry air around November-March. Or if you watched the old and new Encantadia, she’s the protag. XD
The third sampler is a phrase (I ran out of space it was supposed to be a sentence), and vertical double bars are used to end the sentence. I just made them into diagonal slashes to make them look cool. Also I ran out of space. x__x It’s transliterated as a wailing mom looking for her child: Ai anaku (bunga) - Ah, my child (fruit). No space for fruit so it ain’t there.
Author’s extra rant note: Of course, some early Filipinos didn’t wanna use the kudlit due to being comfy with whatever they had at that time, but eventually they gave in. Fast forward to a century later and the baybayin was pretty much dead, as it was for the next 4 centuries or so. Romaji became the norm (except for some of the native tribes that have their own awesome writing systems), but then again some Filipinos didn’t forget it entire time, as many of the revolutionaries’ battle flags had the syllable KA, which is the first syllable of Katipunan, their group which can also be transliterated as “the entire group of the people who meet and come together”. I can’t say more because this is a long-ass post and it’s not about Philippine history. But we can talk about that if you want. Just hit me up with an ask. Warning though: I might just say “thanks for asking but please ask something else” lol j/k XDD
Writing Baybayin using a Straight-cut Calligraphy Pen/ Dip pens with Straight/Oblique Nibs
For this portion of the post, aside from posting pictures of the baybayin in black and white ink I would be pointing out that the techniques I used here are based on Western traditional calligraphy techniques used by scribes of the past, so some of the stroke patterns would be a lot different from the handwritten strokes above. But then again, if you clicked the link to get here straight away instead of reading the previous portions, well you won’t be having that much problems then. Also I will assume you already learned how to write baybayin so I’ll leave you at that. For the black baybayin, I used a calligraphy fountain pen with a 2mm straight-cut nib from the Visual Deck Set – Calligraphy box, not sure where you can buy it online but I bought mine at the National Bookstore because nobody wants to buy it. (Should’ve also bought the other calligraphy set while they’re on sale. LOL Just saying XDD). The surface is just the back of old calendars because I was just testing the strokes. For the white baybayin, I used a Speedball™  C-2 oblique-cut nib and for the ink, it’s glittery silver poster paint from Reeves™ (diluted with dH2O), and the surface is some random paper with nice surface and sizing which my father got from the office. (Apparently you can’t print anything on it so it aged well there until my father disturbed the papers’ sleep and brought them home. Now I ran out of both the calendar and the weird red paper so business is halted for a bit. XDD) Again, these are all based on how I write stuff so it’s pretty much a personal opinion, it’s not absolute but it certainly works for me so here you go.

I didn’t make any full sentences or words because I ran out of nice papers, so maybe I’ll post some next time. Sorry. ._.
Author’s final note on writing using baybayin: I’m still on the fence in using the loan letters C, F, J, Ñ, Q, V, X, and Z because in my opinion apart from having redundancies with some other letters, they were just invented to spell out proper nouns that are foreign in origin. I wouldn’t even spell my full name using baybayin, except my nickname and would just rather use the Romaji/Latin Alphabet for ease. As for using baybayin to write foreign words, well, that can be as tricky as using kana to write foreign words. Both methods boil down to localizing a foreign word into how it would be pronounced based on the original language that the writing system belongs to. For instance, the Japanese waifu (as in “My waifu”) is the Japanized form of the English word “wife”, but because their spelling system is a bit different they had to estimate which kana would be suited to approximate how the word would be pronounced and in turn, be spelled. It is also the same case for some Filipino loan words that got Filipinized (and bastardized because long words are hard lol not kidding tho) such as the word istambay which originally came from “standby” and is now shortened to “tambay” which means “just loitering and doing nothing” or in how the young ones use it now: to hang out with friends (and probably just loiter and do nothing lol don’t kill me ok?). Thus, the usage of baybayin (or kana, or hangul, or Arabic because I think their writing is very lovely or whatever writing system you like that works as syllables more than letters) in writing words from another language would take extra steps such as following the rules of the written language or localizing the word first before writing them in whatever letters or syllables that you want. It’s like using what you have then making do with it/winging it out.
The End!!!! No just kidding. But it’s the last part.
To be honest there are a lot of stuff in the internet about baybayin so I’m not that entirely sure if what I have here is pretty much redundant or not. There are a lot of sites so just use your Googling skills to find what you need, although it may be a bit difficult for readers/users who simply try writing and not understanding the entire language so just use with caution. It’s hard to end up with THAT tough guy who has a kanji tattoo that actually spells “poop” instead of whatever it was supposed to be. I actually saw a guy sporting a tattoo that reads FUUBEN in Japanese, which translates to inconvenience. I lol deep inside but the guy seems happy with that so I just let him be.
Well, I hope this long-ass post helped you a lot, or at the very least the stuff made sense to you and it was worth your time reading. Please leave an ask if you have other questions, I’ll try to answer them if and when I can. Have a great day and may the force be with you. =D

Once opened its packaging the keyboard is displayed on a tray and coated with a transparent plastic, all with a superb presentation and really careful. Accessories embrace: consumer guides, informational pamphlet and two stickers with the Razer emblem. We don’t embrace any sort of CD / DVD with drivers, so we should download them from the Razer website. The RAZER HUNTSMAN is a mechanical keyboard cataloged as full format Gaming that features a numeric pad. It has dimensions of 48.four x 23.2 x 5.eight cm and a weight of 862 grams. They are designed by the producer and specifically designed for Players users in search of a superb response to the pulsation and an incredible touch, all with an software drive of 45g. The keyboard is made from quality plastic with gummy coating very pleasant to the touch, all with a strong development and meeting, as we’ve got accustomed the producer in each one among its products. The version we’re analyzing at this second has format “Spanish (ES), QWERTY”, so it has our beloved “ñ” key. On the again of the keyboard, along with the product label, it consists of six generous rubber surfers and two folding lifting legs in two heights on the prime, thus allowing the height of the keyboard to be adjusted to our liking. The RAZER HUNTSMAN features a collection of double-function keys that may be activated in combination with the “Fn” key. From “F1 to F3” we will control the quantity, from “F5 to F7” multimedia playback, with “F9” we’ll activate the macros mode, with “F10” we will activate the “Gaming Mode”, by way of “F11 to F12” we’ll control the lighting intensity of the keyboard and eventually by means of the “pause / break” key we will droop our PC. TESTS
To test the RAZER HUNTSMAN and the way might it’s in any other case we have now installed SYNAPSE software program from the company itself. This software is in good Castilian being the same very straightforward to make use of. Among the options that we will configure are the task features to every key, creating even profiles. In the lighting part we could have out there the totally different obtainable configuration options, with the ability to configure the lighting of each key individually and activate the totally different results out there. We will activate the game mode which is sort of helpful to keep away from pressing the “Windows” key by mistake, with the ability to also disable the mixture “Alt + Tab” and “Alt + F4”. In the “Macros” tab we will create totally different macros for our favorite games in a very simple means and with great prospects. As we’ve got seen, the Synapse is a strong and intuitive software that permits us to completely squeeze our Razer peripherals, all to configure them to our liking and in accordance with our needs at all times. To test the RAZER HUNTSMAN we’ve got been utilizing it as the primary keyboard for hours enjoying video games of different genres where it has behaved exceptionally, all with a fast and exact click on each considered one of its keys, where the switches Razer optomechanics have worked completely. We should point out that the new switches behaved rather well, providing a really quick and nice contact, a hit on the part of Razer, a ten for them. Its anti-ghosting functionality has worked very properly because it lets you press numerous keys concurrently, which is prime in a mess of conditions. In office duties the RAZER HUNTSMAN has behaved exceptionally since it has offered a fast and precise typing, permitting us to obtain a big handful of pulsations that make us write a lot quicker than if we do it on a standard membrane keyboard. The difference course of to the Razer optomechanical switches has been instantaneous because the sensations are just like the traditional mechanical mechanisms that manufacturers often use in other fashions of keyboards. The noise produced by these switches we love despite being slightly noisier than others available on the market, but for lovers of mechanical keyboards is music to our ears. One thing that we have now missed is that it does not embrace wrist rest, a problem for us essential on a keyboard because otherwise we aren’t completely snug so if it had included a wrist relaxation collection would have been a complete success, however if it is true , that if we’d like one we should resort to the Elite version of the keyboard. The RGB lighting provided by this keyboard is spectacular with its 16.eight million customizable colors. Stated Razer Chroma lighting gives great uniformity and definition in each certainly one of its keys, offering a terrific facet to the entire. The intensity of the lighting at full energy doesn’t hassle at all, being good even once we are totally at midnight. By means of the totally different lighting modes we will customise our keyboard to go away its appearance to our liking. The choice of with the ability to configure the lighting of each key separately is an unimaginable choice since on this means and relying on the game or software that we are using at any time, the keys will mild up the selected shade. Briefly, nice sensations are transmitted by the keyboard, its optomechanical switches and its wonderful look which is offered by the RAZER HUNTSMAN.

V, G, D, Ž, Ż, I, Yi, N, P, R, T, U, Ñ, Ě, X
V - Tell me one obscure fact you know, about anything.
The Greek alphabet used to have a letter called a digamma, which looks like this:  Ϝ (ϝ) It was used for ‘w’ sounds and fell out of use by the 7th century BC. I learned about it when I was researching Troy for history - Troy was also known as Wilusa and Hittite records have Wilusa written with the digamma.
G - To what extent are people responsible for their actions?
I think it depends on the person’s circumstances and age. Adults bear more responsibility for their actions than children do, for example - children, yes, are responsible for their own actions, but it also falls on the parent to teach them that responsibility. Adults are, in my opinion, mostly responsible for their own actions - reactions, on the other hand, are entirely different.
D - Name one good thing that’s happened.
In the last year since I started my job, I’ve been promoted three times - from temporary event hire to part time sales associate, to freight associate, and now closing manager.
Ž - Name one thing you were taught by experience.
I could probably count baking for this. While my mom taught me some things, most of my baking comes from trial and error on my own from recipes I’ve found and modified to my own use.
Ż - What do you feel passionate about?
Writing. I’ve always been a writer and it’s always going to be something I love. While I may not have the time for it that I used to, it’s still a huge part of my life and the person I am.I - Which is harder: Math or English?
MATH, for certain. I’m finally going back to school again to try to finish up the last three math courses I need to graduate and I am Anxious™ about it.
Yi - Would you describe yourself as Extra™?
Me? Extra™? *gasp, hand over heart* I’ve never been Extra™ in my entire life.
(This is a lie and anyone who knows me at all know that)
N - What’s something you want to share with everyone?
I’m laughing because the first thing to come to mind was “I’m gay” but anyone who knows me knows that already. God, I don’t know, I overshare on twitter, so I feel like I’ve shared everything about myself lately.P - How do you relax?
Listen to music and doodle or write something. Playing KHUx has been a go-to relaxation method lately.
R - Are you introverted, extroverted, or ambiverted?
I feel I’m pretty introverted, but I suppose a case for me being ambiverted could be made.T - What’s one thing you’re certain is true?
There is most certainly other life out in the universe, perhaps beyond our current understanding and reach, but out there, regardless.
U - Name one thing you wish was common knowledge.
Honestly, anything I consider common knowledge is probably common knowledge anywhere else. Ñ - Any plans for tomorrow?
Work and dinner, that’s it.Ě - What’s your stance on marriage?
I guess my stance on marriage is, if it’s something that someone wants and is ready for, then they should go for it and be allowed to do it, no matter what they or their partner’s gender identity. It should be a human right, regardless of religious or state affiliation. No one who wants to be married should be forbidden to marry the person they love.
X - Does anyone in your family have a different native language than you?
Nope, we’re all English speakers, sad to say. My great-great grandmother made her stance when she brought her family up here - “We’re American now, we speak English.”
