I finally figured out why i always hated the "do they know its christmas time" song
Its so white savioury but not only, its so aggressively presumptuous. Like you never hear a Jew say "oh no :(( those poor children don't know it's hannukah!" Or a Muslim say "they don't know its Eid :((( we have to show them its Eid."

I love John's expression here so much. And also his winter ensemble.

In the snow ...
A Tale of Advent
Snowflakes were falling as I visited one of our Advent markets.
Looked at all the big booths.
So many amazing things.
And saw an old man in a small booth with snow globes in all sizes.
"So beautiful.
May I?" I asked.
He gave me a friendly nod.
So i took one and looked at it more closely.
It seemed really old. Inside the holy couple, Mary and Joseph at the manger.
The colors still fresh.
The virgin in the dark blue dress looking at her child.
A tired smile on her lips.
A woman who had come a long way to find a safe place.
"Charming, isn't it?" He said.
"Rare to find in these days.
Reminds me of my youth."
"You are right." I replied.
"Seems they need a shelter from the cold
and i have one to offer.
So: How much do you want?"
"30 Euros."
"Don't have that much with me. Let's say - 20?"
"I give you 50. For my darling."
A voice came from behind.
A deep, dark voice that sounded like money.
And a high pitched female voice. "Oh Honey."
I turned and looked at the two.
A guy like Charles Napier, know what I mean.
And she - half his age. A schoolboys dream.
What connected them was their view of the world.
Cold and calculating.
And their warm fur coats. Must have cost a fortune.
"Hey" Said the man.
"Why you're looking at me?
Looking for trouble, i guess. Yes?
You gonna look pretty funny
trying to eat gingerbread with no teeth!"
All that in a Charles Napier tone, you know.
"Don't react." I said to myself. Just deadpan.
But inside I burst out laughing.
"OK. Then give me the ball."
Said the man
and waved a 100 Euro bill.
The dealer changed silently.
And the two left.
Heads held high.
So high they almost trampled
on a young woman standing on the corner.
A woman in a dark blue dress.
A child in her arms.
A tired smile on her lips.
Someone who had come a long way
and needed a safe place
a shelter from the cold.

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas (Mercury-Phonogram UK/Columbia US, 1984) - Design by Peter Blake
This record, intended to raise relief for victims of the Ethiopia famine, started a trend of charity supergroup singles that briefly popped up in the mid 80s, complete with similarly cringeworthy lyrics.

Thinking about the messed up lyrics in Do They Know It's Christmas.
"And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime" - there won't be any in Australia either, where's our song? Plus I'm pretty sure a high mountain will get some snow.
"Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow." - Excuse me? The rainforests in central Africa are pretty renowned. Plus the mangroves. Plus the many rivers. Even in the 80s. Where are you looking, one tiny pocket in the Sahara desert?
And all of Africa, all 54 countries have this same problem?

"Do They Know It's Christmas?," the first charity single on a grand scale, is released in the UK with proceeds going to help famine victims in Ethiopia. It becomes the biggest-selling single in UK history, a record that stands until 1997 when it's overtaken by Elton John's updated version of "Candle In The Wind." The single is released in America a week later.
