Binge-Watching: Rinne no Lagrange S2, Episodes 10-12

In which we mercifully wrap things up, and I spend a little more time discussing how this show’s critical flaw leads to its failure.

Oh, Brother

In retrospect, it really is a shame how much interest I’ve lost in Rinne no Lagrange. The first stretch of episodes wasn’t exactly perfect, but it had a bizarre, uniquely eclectic kind of energy that made me interested to see where things were going to go. Unfortunately, the more I actually saw where things were going, the clearer it became that the destination wasn’t going to be anywhere worth traveling. So here we are at the end of the show, and I can barely muster up the energy to discuss it in any detail. Very little in these final episodes made any sort of impact, whether good or bad. It’s just the same critical flaws that have always dragged this show down, hobbling its best ideas from having any impact and constantly taking me out of the experience. On the bright side, unlike last season’s spectacular trainwreck of a finale, most of the failures here are at least concentrated in the same spot. Instead of everything and anything going wrong, the heart of why these final episodes don’t work are all pretty much centered on Dizelmine, what the show’s been trying to do with him, and what it actually ended up doing with him. If nothing else, it should make a fine post-mortem on the systemic writing flaws that this show struggles with, so the future writers among you can learn to avoid them. Hey, I look for the bright sides wherever they show up.

Conceptually, I can see what the writers were going for with Dizelmine. He’s a classic “peace through any means necessary” villain, thinking the only way to protect his people from violence is to subjugate the world under his heel and rule it with an iron fist that allows for no dissent. There’s even a somewhat understandable motivation to his authoritarian desire for control that’s touched on here; some falling-out between him and Villagiulio made him think he couldn’t rely on anyone else for help and had to take all the world’s burdens on himself. Clearly, his arc is supposed to be a struggle between his desire for control and his need to open back up to people, with letting himself trust other people again translating to accepting a more egalitarian political structure, helping keep the peace with his old friend Dizelmine instead of in spite of him. The treacherous Moid, in classic evil advisor fashion, is meant to be the spark that finally pushes him over the edge of tyranny, convincing him to give into his worst instincts just as he’s finally breaking out of them. Thus, it falls to the Jersey Club to remind him of the power of friendship by showcasing the power of their own unbreakable bond, showing him that true comrades, like Villa and Dizel once were, should trust each other to have each other’s best interests at heart, even when you find yourself at cross purposes. A parallel is drawn between our heroes’ and villains’ struggles to understand each other, thematic depth is achieved, the day is saved, and everyone goes home happy. On paper, this all makes perfect sense.

The problem, as always with this show, is that we skip so many steps en route to making that point, the point itself becomes totally meaningless. So for cataloguing’s sake, here is a list of all the ways this show neglects to actually write a story instead of just the outline for one:

-We never see Moid turning Dizelmine to the dark side. Dizel seems perfectly happy to work with Villa, but then the very next time we see him, Moid’s already running dirty errands for him and he’s gone right to ranting about never forgiving Villa for his betrayal. So we don’t get to actually see the process of Dizel losing faith, we’re just told he’s lost faith somewhere off screen and expected to buy the drama of that.

-We don’t actually find out what Villa’s so-called betrayal actually was. Dizel mentions something about Villa siding with people dangerous to the Polyhedron’s stability, but we’re never told who those people were or what their actual intentions were. It honestly feels like a piece of “fill in plot point later” placeholder text that the writers never got around to actually filling.

-The attempted parallel with Madoka and the Jersey Club falls flat because frankly, Madoka and her girlfriends have never really struggled to understand each other. Aside from Muginami initially being a villain back in the first season and that one episode this season where Muginami and Lan were fighting for Madoka’s sake, they’ve all been on perfect terms. This isn’t like Symphogear where you’re shown the push and pull of Hibiki trying to understand her friends and enemies alike and there’s genuine tension between them, the Jersey Club has never felt like they’ve struggled to trust each other like Villa and Dizel have.

The specifics may change, but the flaw in each of these points is the same: Rinne no Lagrange doesn’t show us the actual events that drive its story’s drama, and then it asks us to care about that drama regardless. And no amount of flashy light shows can paper over that fundamental emptiness.

-”You “convinced” him by sticking a sword to his throat.” Lol, never change, Kirius.

-Well, the sky splitting apart was cool.

-”Where did we go wrong?” Probably when you got stuck with these writers, I guess.

-”I am the bone of my sword.” -Madoka, probably.

-Seriously, it’s always evil crystals with bad mecha shows. I don’t get it.

-So he’s just a standard issue mad scientist type. Lame.

-Oh hey, it’s the chairs. Stiiiiill trying to pretend they’re something meaningful instead of a complete nonsense symbol, are we?

-”Yo. I’m back.” Alright, Yurikano’s fun.

-”I can’t get that song out of my head!” Imagine, the song of fate is just an unbearable earworm.

-I’d ask why Moid just gets snapped out of existence, but let’s be real, there’s no explanation. It just happens.

-”Maybe that was mom telling me to snap out of it.” Aw, there’s a nice thought.

-”And you’re secretary-general of which united nations?” Something about this detail is really fun. She’s talking with damn intergalactic diplomats and she’s still off in her own world.

And that, folks, is Rinne no Lagrange. Expect my season 2 reflection later tonight, as well as what show will take its place!

Binge-Watching: Rinne no Lagrange S2, Episodes 4-6

In which my good will rapidly evaporates, as an attempt to tackle the series’ biggest outstanding mystery collapses in on itself like a black hole.

The Lost Princess

By this point in Rinne no Lagrange’s story, most of the major bits of lore and backstory have been revealed. The one pertinent question still up in the air is the question of Yurikano, princess of De Metrio. How was she involved in the tragedy that destroyed a planet and pitted De Metrio and Le Garite against each other? What part of her was still hanging around in the ether? Why was she such an important figure in this conflict, and how could our protagonists fix what she left broken? Well, we finally get our answers in this stretch. Unfortunately, whatever promise the first few episodes of this season showed did not carry through to how it handles Yurikano. Her arc is a goddamn mess, and it quickly becomes apparent that it was not worth waiting all this time to find out what her deal was. Just when I thought this show was starting to turn it around, it trips over its feet all over again. Egh.

First, the basics: Yurikano, like Madoka, was sensitive to the power of the Voxes. In time, she became aware that Dizelmine was seeking to use her power to destroy De Metrio for the sake of saving Le Garite. Rather than let that happen, she took the nuclear option and basically blew herself up, spiking so hard with Vox power that she exploded the planet she was on, presumably taking herself with it. This tragedy officially severed the bonds of friendship that once tied her, Villagiulio, Dizelmine, and Lan together, setting the two planets on an irreperable course for war. But Yurikano didn’t manage to die all the way. Her consciousness is still hanging around in the ether, watching Madoka grapple with the Vox Aura herself. Meanwhile, her body was saved by Dizelmine, and she’s been living on his ship without any of her memories, no more than an overgrown child. There’s a lot of meaty conflict potential here; Yurikano was the common thread tying all these fractured sides of the conflict together, with strong emotional bonds to all of them. She sacrificed herself to try and save them, but war happened regardless, and Dizelmine’s still trying to restore her full self so he can use her power. It also does a good job characterizing Dizelmine: he’s a bastard, but he’s not evil. He even apologizes to Lan for being so controlling of her. He’s just committed to doing whatever possible to bring Yurikano back, no matter who or what he has to sacrifice along the way. His people barely escaped the catastrophe 20,000 years ago that shook Earth, and he sees it as his duty to ensure they never have to suffer another calamity like that. If that means resurrecting his old friend for the purpose of blowing De Metrio apart, than so be it.

Stuck in my Head

That’s all well and good as a setup, but things almost immediately get weird and confusing when Dizelmine’s plan starts playing out. We barely spend any time with child-mind Yurikano- or Yuriyuri, as she likes to be called- before Dizel sedates her and tries to shove Madoka’s mind into her body. This is their childhood friend, someone they thought they’d lost for good, returned in this diminutive state with no memory of the bonds they’ve shared, and we do basically nothing with it. Yurikano could just as easily have been in a coma for all the difference it makes to the story, and at least then we wouldn’t have to deal with the “mind of a young girl in the body of a sexually mature adult” shtick that makes it even harder to feel just how monumental this is supposed to be. And things get even weirder when they bring Madoka to their brain-swapping machine. We reach the half-episode on this whammy moment of Madoka seeing Yurikano on the operating chair, with Moid and Dizel obviously having plans for her, and the next time we cut back to that location, Madoka’s already in the other chair. Like, what? We just completely skipped over what happened to make Madoka agree to be in that chair. What did Dizel tell her? How much did he leave out? How did he convince her? What does she even think she’s doing? We don’t know what Madoka’s motivation here is; it’s like the writers just plopped her in the chair for the plot to progress with no agency on her part at all. How are we supposed to empathize with the drama here if we literally don’t even know what that drama even is?

Then we get to the actual body swap, with Madoka and Yurikano stuck in each other’s bodies, and hoooooooly Jesus does it get stupid. Somehow, Madoka just so happens to unwittingly hit the transmission button in her escape pod so all the warring parties can hear her, and she just so happens to be ranting aloud about Yurikano’s motivations despite having no good reason not to just be thinking silently about this stuff, and she just so happens to be playing that one word game where you match the end of one word with the beginning of another, and somehow playing that game makes her realize that Yurikano was actually in love with Dizelmine and somehow that explains everything about her? I think??? Like, what is that even supposed to be? She’s just muttering free-word association and she just figures out of nowhere that the words she’s talking about describe Yurikano’s feelings? How the fuck does that even work? And of course, she’s kind enough to exposit all of this aloud in exhaustive detail- keep in mind, she’s still supposed to be talking to herself and have no knowledge that other people are listening in- because I guess the writers didn’t realize how ridiculously fucking contrived this entire situation is. It’s honestly one of the weirdest conflict resolutions I’ve ever seen. Who could’ve possibly thought this was in any way a good idea?

Who What Where

But believe it or not, that isn’t even the dumbest part. The dumbest part comes right afterward, when Madoka in Yurikano’s body gets her hands on Vox Aura again and crashes through the ship into Dizel’s garden. This could’ve been an interesting moment, Dizel talking about the person he loved while someone else inhabited her body and them coming to an understanding that way. But instead, out of fucking nowhere, Dizel touching Madoka somehow makes her and Yurikano swap their minds back into the normal bodies. WHAT?!?!?! Seriously, fucking what? Where did that come from? What fucking power made that happen? And how the fuck did Dizelmine not mean to do it? How does he just fucking swap them back without meaning to and not realize for the next five minutes? Literally what the fuck just happened? Not that it matters, because Yurikano just fucking vanishes back into the ether right afterward to stop the ship from blowing up with evil crystals (side note, why is it always evil cosmic crystals with bad mecha series?), and this entire body swap subplot is rendered entirely pointless. Seriously, why was it necessary for them to end up in each other’s bodies if literally nothing was going to come of it? Why write yourself into a scenario so contrived, that you have to pull such monumentally stupid random bullshit out of your ass to fix it when you could’ve had a far stronger, more easily understandable conflict with them just ending up in their own damn bodies? This could’ve been such a good arc, and you blew it!

Feh. Whatever. We’ve still got half a season to go, maybe some of this nonsense will make more sense when it’s given a proper explanation. But man, I so fucking tired of shows that are just on the verge of working but never manage to cross over that line.
