“Even though right now, in many ways I’m lacking and I like you more, but I’ll try hard to become a person who is fit to be with Sunbae. Just wait and see. I’ll make sure Sunbae will like me much more!”
Summary: Lies and love unravel as the Kambal investigates an incident that brings them back a year before Alexandra Trese emerged from the Balete Tree.
Crispin’s warm touch lingers for a while before Cielo turns to face him. His eyes, darker than usual. Rain drips from his hair. Dropping as casually as her gaze rests on his lips.
“I’m leaving. They need an architect there. You know I just started my internship, right?”
“Tangina. Why don’t they send another architect there then? Why does it have to be you?”
“Look, I never question your extracurriculars. Why do you have to question mine?” Cielo snaps back.
He ruffles his hair in frustration before sitting on the couch.
“Cielo, it’s too quiet. Someone’s planning something.”
“Crispin, could you just relax-“
Suddenly the door opens and a pair of strong arms envelope Cielo in a hug. Her hands linger on the shoulders of the person she is suddenly facing.
“I know you were planning to be extra careful. Good thing I’m going with you so you only need to be careful now.”
It was Basilio. He was carrying a duffel bag and a pair of shades.
“No, you’re not. Go do your thing in Boracay or whatever. I’m not taking a chaperone to Batanes, Gago.”
Basilio looks at his twin brother who just shrugs. They both sigh as she quietly sits on the sofa.
“I’m thankful for both of you. I always say that. But sometimes it’s just too much, okay? I’ll text you all the time. Heck, I’ll even call Alexandra just so you two won’t have to fight whenever I call one of you.”
“You won’t have to call Bossing if you take me. Promise I won’t even speak or go near you. You won’t notice I was even there. I’ll be in another room, unless.”
Crispin throws his brother a book which almost hits him. Special thanks to his quick reflexes or he would’ve dealt with a black eye.
“Shut up, Basilio. Sky’s not going.”
Cielo glared at Crispin. “Correction, Basilio’s not going. But I still am. What’s the point of you two calling me Sky if you keep holding me down, huh?”
“Look, I’m just looking out for you.” Crispin mutters, which was still audible, before he sits beside her.
Basilio imitates. “So am I.”
There’s no use trying to argue with them when they’re trying to use their twin powers of persuasion so she somehow obliges.
“Alright, I’m going to the office tomorrow. If they let me take a chaperone, I’m going.”
Crispin nods quietly. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. And if they say no, I’m going back. We could just go call Alexandra and drink alcohol until I forget all of you existed.”
Basilio snorts. “Well I’m pretty unforgettable so good luck with that.”
Cielo stood up to get her suitcase when she suddenly yawned. She immediately felt the eyes of the Kambal on her.
“Let me take that.” Crispin stood up and pulls the suitcase nearer to the door. Their fingers touch and Cielo’s cheeks almost burned.
Basilio quickly enters the bedroom and sits on one of the beanbag chairs.
“You two almost done there yet?” He asks before Cielo entered the room, Crispin slowly closing the door.
She quickly pats Basilio’s head. “Good night. See you tomorrow.”
He grabs her hand and just clasps it. At that moment, Cielo might have wanted to stay like that, which explains her sigh. “Good night.”
A case where the Kambal were temporarily turned into infants so these two had to become their guardians for the meantime while finding a way to break the curse, whether they like it or not.
can we just talk about the Kambals' masks for a moment?
it was never explained in the series*, but in the komiks, the lore states that the masks are akin to a dog's leash and muzzle-- some asshole famously used them to control two aswang and make them fight for him in some entertainment death ring before the Trese family saved them.
Anton (and Alex's lolo) chose to put the masks on the Kambal as a precaution to keep the Trese family safe while they taught these boys to be part of an actual family. in case the boys decided to turn on them, Anton could control them.
now. in the netflix series, Talabugsao removes the masks to control his sons**. then, after Alex breaks his hold over them, what do the kambal do?
they put the masks back on.
no prompting. no hesitation. they stand up, face their father, and put the masks back on.
because it's no longer a muzzle or a leash to them. it's a sign of loyalty and a sign of family and a rejection of their past as child soldiers and murderers.
they reject their father and go stand behind their ate. it wasn't just Alex claiming them as family in this scene, it was the kambal claiming Alexandra as their family, too.
*they also don't show it in the series (maybe because they lacked time) but there's a flashback scene in the Book of Murders where the kambal and Alexandra go snooping in the family library and are attacked by an unknown entity-- the kambal, even as kids, immediately defend Alex without her prompting, suggesting that, as they grew closer and became family, the kambal grew more protective of Alex. this happened after the masks were put on them and before Alex entered the great balete tree. it's actually a really sweet scene-- the second Alexandra was in danger Basilio screamed "stay away from Alex!" before kicking the halimaw in the face. both boys were in pambahay clothes. cuties.
**in the komiks Talabugsao verbally states his distaste for the masks, saying that he feels like they hinder his sons from reaching their true potential.
