Marina abramovic
(artist research)
I found the work of marina abramovic quite interesting to view and to experience.
Her work " The artist is present", is a spectacular performance piece where she sits and stares at whoever is willing to sit and stare at her.
I love the idea of art being able to stare back at us, making us feel a mixture of emotions.
Eye contact, can be so hard to maintain as well while interacting with people, even though it sounds so simple to do. So I love this element of her holding her gaze determinedly, provoke different reactions from the person opposite her.
Tumblr media
Her work, "Rhythm 0" is also a disturbingly spectacular piece too.
She let people do whatever they wanted to her body, for many hours, with acts becoming more violent as the hours went by.
She put herself as an object (like how women can feel) and represented, I feel, toxic masculinity and how power and lack of boundaries can become very dangerous.
Tumblr media
Overall, in my opinion, she is excellent at creating an uncomfortable feeling within people, something of which I feel resonates with my own project work.
(Some work found in book, "The artist body" by Tracey Warr and Amelia Jones.)
EDIT
My use of the word uncomfortable was not intended to be negative. I was conveying how I feel her work is very deep and is heavily thought provoking.

Disrupt Project
Here is the aftermath of "Disrupting Perfectionism" in the form of disrupting a portrait I spent a week working on.
It became something new and something that wasn't perfect in my eyes but was still my own work and my own creation.

Yeti - pixel animation
Expanding on my "How to shave" zine, I wanted to create an animation of what would happen when someone doesn't shave. To do this I used asperite, which is a pixel art animation software. It is usually used to create videogame sprites but I decided to use it for a basic animation.
I wanted to show how much of the body the hair takes over, to make this more prominent I decided to keep the character unclothed, so you can see the hair become overgrown.
Here was my end result which I am content with. I hope to use asperite more in the future and animation as a whole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also completed this one, where the growth comes from all of the areas of the body that have the most testosterone. I didn't like the overall animation as much as the standard animation that is above.

6/11/23 - Publication workshop
I decided to do a publication workshop this week as i wanted to work with layers and printmaking. I also hoped to print my mri scans with the risograph machine.
We started by making books and pages for our books. Starting with a cover page of random lines and parterns. I decided to do waves lines interconnecting in the shape of shoulder. It almost gives the effect of the shoulder moving. It turned out very similar to the layered image i got from the animation i made a couple weeks ago.

Foley Sound Art 06/11/23
I had already previously done an introduction to Foley sound art on 27/10/23. But I decided to do it again, so I could get a more in depth understanding of how it works.
In the video above, me and my peers recreated sound for a scene from the animated tv show "Samurai Jack".
I really enjoyed making this. I felt I learnt so much, as trying to maintain the balance of creating the sound on cue while ensuring the sound fits whatever is going on in the scene is difficult.
I also have an idea I hope to create over the week, related to sound art, also another reason why I decided to do the workshop again.

Disrupt project 16/10/23
I have attached above, my sound art piece!
I am very happy with how it turned out.
I love the dark and gritty feel it has, since I put the black and white filter over it. It makes the message more serious. My voice then adds a humorous element, which I was looking to achieve too.
There was a process to get to this piece though.
I first had my college peer, Chris, help me to reshoot a video, where only my hand is seen, acting very cautiously, portraying how it can hear the voice too.
Tumblr media
I then sat down at home, and watched the video a couple of times, working out what I wanted my voice to say to cover the regular piano noise. The pink writing is the "song" I decided on.
Tumblr media
I then video myself saying these words, while carefully watching the video on another device. It took a few tries to get the hang of it. I got annoyed too (see third image lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then chose a video and mashed it together with the video of me playing the keys. This helped me to realise that my voice was too drawn out, compared the keys, which where pressed quickly.
I then redid my voiceover video, and mashed it together with the piano video, on the app video leap. This then led to the video attached above.
IMPORTANT!!
I have attached a link to view my process work. They are on Vimeo, as Tumblr only allows one video per post.

Disrupt Project 10/11/23
(Primary Research)
After having a tutorial with lecturer Fiona, I decided to go back to the piano in the LSAD canteen and get some more primary research of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got some great pictures of the inside of it, showing the components that make it up. One of my college peers, Chris, told me aswell, that the piano is a percussion instrument, that to create noises the hammer part bangs on the strings.
I got a great video of him playing the piano which demonstrates this.
Tumblr media
I also notice how dusty the inside is, and how the back of it is used for storage of cleaning equipment (See top). It felt sad to see this, as it shows it is not cared for in the same ways a piano in a theatre would be.
I also notice that the piano keys can be locked up, blocked from use, as there is a keyhole there that can lock the cover. I found this very interesting.
Overall I feel it was wise to investigate the piano again as it gets my creativity flowing.

Disrupt project 13/12/23
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was preparing to put up some bits to exhibit for the end of the disrupt project and an idea came to me; to combine some of my individual work together to create one piece.
The piece together, has become a human form of the piano, which is brilliant. It is exactly something I had wanted to created for the disrupt project.
It has both 2D and 3D objects making it up, which I really like, I always enjoy the combination of the two.
I also love the surreal way it looks, how it combines both fun and uncomfortable/odd.
I feel the piece, sitting on the chair, reminds me of Marina Abramovic's work, "The artist is present". This is due to the piece having the ability to stare back at the viewer/user.
List of items I have used:
▪️key head and hearts on jacket I made after doing the disrupt/reconstruct workshop (key head on propped up with cardboard).
▪️soft sculpture hands made in the fashion and textile room, while making work there after I did the make your mark workshop
▪️jacket which I marked at the back, from doing the make your mark workshop
▪️plaster casted sculpture I made from doing 3D materials workshop.

The concept I am exploring for my disrupt project:
I want to disrupt my assumption that the piano in the LSAD canteen, is a playable and submissive object, by empowering it. I will do this through a lens of toxic masculinity and feminism.
I will try to disrupt this in both negative and positive ways.
I will also try to incorporate sound into my work, due to the piano being a musical instrument.

Disrupt project 05/12/23 - 07/12/23
Over the week, I have been creating work for my project after doing the disrupt/ Reconstruct workshop.
I wanted to make as much good use of the printed paper I got from it, as I possibly could, to be sustainable.
I also wanted to created work that I felt conveyed my concept well.
I feel I have achieved this.
Tumblr media
My favourite piece is this one below. It is mainly made up of piano keys, the back of my 3D printed piano, my own facial parts and leftover cut outs.
I wanted it to look monstrous, as I feel, to be empowered and to have boundaries can be seen as vicious to people, who were so used to one being submissive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After watching the typography seminar, I tried to introduce Typography to my work too. I was inspired by artists I watched in that seminar, Nate Williams and Stephen Power.
So I used it in the above piece and also in the piece below too.
Tumblr media
I love this piece too. It feels monstrous but yet human like, by my use of my face, the soft sculpture hands I made, and the piano keys printed in red with barb wire layered over them. It overall portrays sarcasm, and anger, to me.
The type also comes across quite vicious. I was thinking about typographic hierarchy while making them and knew through using this, I could create a tone with them, so that one could read them and know which words were sharper than others.
Overall, both of these pieces have a somewhat funny yet uncomfortable feeling to them I feel, which was my aim to portray.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, these pieces of work were okay, they more so helped me to achieve in creating the first two images above.
Tumblr media
I really like this piece too (it is still in process). The once whole object has been separated and pulled apart, with coloured strips added into the gaps. The relief piano keys in red also signify the danger there is in touching them.
I feel, for me, it portrays the change and difference in oneself, going from submissive to empowered.
I also feel it portrays how hard change can be but also how good and necessary it is too.
For the pink and red strips, I am hoping to fill them with lyrics of empowering songs next week. I had created an online survey (Please see previous post) so that other students could give me empowering songs and lyrics. This is to help fill in the strips and to connect others to the piece.
Tumblr media
I also tried out experimental typography on my work too, I tried using rhinestones and pearls to create the line of a song I myself find empowering - "Me too" by Meghan Trainor. (See above)
It was fun to try, but it was too time consuming and isn't very legible to read.
Overall, I'm really happy with what I created this week.

Disrupt/ Reconstruct workshop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I felt this workshop was a good one to do as my last one.
I did find it a bit overwhelming at the start, due to the amount of paper we printed (I always try to be substainable) and the lack of space we had to sort through it. But I still feel okay about my progress in it.
I found it very helpful to learn how to use the printer, to create distorted images and layered images (see first two pictures), something of which I would have never thought to do using it.
I also enjoyed when I got stuff up on the wall. I feel this really helped me to visualise ideas and good placements for work. Gemma helped me as well to get some good ideas rolling, especially one where I printed out the piano in parts, to create what looks like a jigsaw of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, it was an okay workshop for me. From what I have printed out now, I will try use as much of the paper as possible to create work for my project.

Disrupt project 03/12/23
(seminar)
I viewed the Typography seminar on this day. I also took some notes while watching it (see collaged picture below).
Tumblr media
I found it very interesting, to learn how typography can be a very powerful part of art and why it is needed in everyday life.
Learning about how it can be both 2D and 3D, interactive and have movement excited me, as I would only ever relate it to 2D work.
I also really admired the illustrations artist Nate Williams. I really like how his typography fits well together and makes the work appear very fun and positive. I also love the pattern element that it has too.
I also really like the artist Stephens Powers. The use of big, bold and colourful work that both balances positivity and sarcasm is very enjoyable and inspiring to view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am hoping that I can include some typography elements into my project work, after viewing this.

Disrupt project 28/11/23 - 01/12/23
Over the course of the week, I have created some posters after doing the manifesto workshop!
The yellow one is my favourite. I love how the colours work very well together, enhancing the surreal design, which I adore too. I feel it conveys my concept for my project well.
Tumblr media
Here is the rest of my poster work below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really enjoyed making them! It has made me realise how much I love making collage work, in both 2D and 3D forms (See 2D collage in process below).
Tumblr media
I also love how using colours can help draw one's attention to the posters, that being from the colour of the ink used to the colour of the paper. I learnt it is important to ensure that the colours chosen contrast well together, so I don't lose parts of the design.
Learning how to use the risograph machine, I feel, is an important skill I have learnt over the course of the week too. Even just simple things like placing items on it is very important for the print to go well (see scanned image below)
Tumblr media
Fiona also showed me the Image printed out into the drum of the machine, which I took a picture of, as I thought it was really cool.
Tumblr media
Overall, I am delighted with my progress! I had a good week :)

Disrupt Project 27/11/23
(Primary Art Research)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Thou Shalt Not Suffer a Witch" exhibition by artist and activist Aislinn O Keefe was being displayed in the gallery of the college, and I decided to have a look around it.
I feel it really inspired me, especially in my creation of manifesto posters over the week.
I loved the strong colours, and the collage work used in the prints. They drew me into them and I feel they conveyed their message excellently.
They also appear very fun looking, which drew my eye to them too.

Disrupt project 25/11/23 - 26/11/23
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, I spray painted my 3D printed work.
My friend Alex provided me with the spray paints, thank you!
I was a bit scared to do this in case I ruined the work (like work I did with the wire previously), but I decided to try anyway.
And I'm delighted that I did, cause I feel the spraypaint has really helped to portray the 3D printed version as a Miniature piano.
I had covered some small detailed areas with masking tape, like the keys, to protect them in case the spraypaint took away their detail, and also so that I could easily paint over them with acrylic paint (I felt I would have more control, ensuring that the paint didn't overly cover them).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above, is the work after I took off the masking tape and painted the small areas.
I love the keys, they really stand out now! But I am not happy with the ridge areas above them. I feel the acrylic hasn't really covered them and isn't quite the same colour as the spraypaint I used.
So I am between ideas on how I sort this (see image below).
Tumblr media
I will keep thinking about it for a day or two, as to not rush in and make it worst.
The result of the keychain being spraypaint also can be seen below.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I over spray painted it and it stuck the cardboard base I made, causing the paint to be affected in areas.
I am also not liking the colour, I feel it is very dark, not as close to pink as I originally thought it might be.
I will see if I can do anything soon to make it better, in my opinion.

Disrupt Project-Adobe Photoshop
Here is a Moonknight transformation rotoscope in colour. This one took nearly 5 hours straight of working. The reason I include this work is to show how I learned to use this method of animation from my workshop. I hope in future to use this medium for other projects and works. This medium taught me patience and that I had to work slowly and tediously to come up with a workable final product.
As my project continues I hope this new skill of both animation and patience will benefit me and my work.
