Australia is a close security and humanitarian partner for Vanuatu and the Pacific island's new government has not held security discussions with China, Vanuatu's foreign minister said on Monday.[...]
China has been a significant lender for infrastructure projects in Vanuatu in recent years, building its parliament house and sporting stadiums.[...]
"We also took the opportunity to acknowledge Australia's role as Vanuatu's primary humanitarian partner due to its close proximity and through its commitment to support Vanuatu, its disaster resilience, response and recovery capabilities," he said.
He pointed to the wharf and police barracks built with Australian funding as examples of security cooperation between the two nations.
Vanuatu has "not established any security agreement, we have not even discussed any matter in relation to security" with China, he told reporters in response to questions.

On 25th September 1923 40 men were killed when Redding Colliery, near Falkirk, was inundated by water from old workings.
Some of the survivors were in the mine for up to nine days before they were rescued and some of these men never fully recovered from the effects. The flood itself occurred because a sump had been cut in a dyke to collect water, but the location of this sump was not properly recorded and coal was stripped from the area, weakening the sump and so flooding the mine.
The disaster was compounded by poor working practices, which meant that no-one knew exactly how many men were in the mine at the time of the flood. The rescue effort was hampered by the lack of reliable plans of the mines and by the difficult access above ground for the ambulances.  Gas, rockfalls and more flooding were hazards throughout the rescue.
The Redding Colliery was owned by James Nimmo & Co.The land was owned by the Duke of Hamilton who also owned the rights to the minerals in the whole area.
Following the disaster, a public inquiry was held in Glasgow as well as the statutory fatal accident inquiry which was held at Falkirk Sheriff Court. The public inquiry recommended that correct records be kept of who was in amine at any one time, that better telephone communications should exist below ground and that new legislation should be put in place regarding mining in areas approaching water.
The flood was a disaster for the people of Redding and the Braes, where most of the men had come from.  Quite apart from the grief of losing husbands, fathers, brothers and sons, the families affected also lost their breadwinners.  Many of the survivors were never able to work in the mines again and it was some months before the mine itself re-opened.
The Redding Disaster Relief Fund was opened by the Provost of Falkirk a pedways after the disaster and subscriptions poured in from Scotland and from other countries, including Australia and the United States.  The Fund was used to give allowances to the widows and children of the men who died and allowances to the men who survived because most of them were unable towork again.
In the 1920s Britain did not have a national welfare system. Also, as there was no National Health Service, any medical needs had to be paid for, and so the Fund provided expenses for the survivors to go to convalescent homes.
I took until December before  the bodies of 40 men were recovered and the rescue and recovery operation was completed.
Plans have already began for an ambitious memorial to be built to mark the centenary since the disaster occured.
The memorial will include a sculpture of a miner and of a mother holding a baby, waiting anxiously for news at the pit head - inspired by a photograph taken at the time, as seen in the first pic. They hope to raise £100,000 to cover the cost of the ambitious memorial although £38,000 - the cost of the main statues - will be paid for by a grant from Falkirk Council's Community Choices.
The fourth pic shows a funeral cortege  on Falkirk High street.

Leaving our hotel bright and early, we headed on to Fukushima. It was great to see so much of the country side, we even had lunch with a bunch of pink pokemon, with Chansey being the favourite!
Tumblr media
We then moved away from pokemon and on to our first proper stop of the day; a sedimentary outcrop. Here we saw how the tephra (tephra is fragments of rock and volcanic glass) from historic volcanic eruptions were cemented into the rock's layers. We could see this in the coarser, darker layers in the rock. These layers can also be dated to find the ages of each of the volcanic eruptions with the right equitment! This can be really handy to understand the historic volcanic activity, which can help to forcast what to expect from future volcanic activity!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also saw a cute real frog (left) and cute rock frog (right) at the outcrop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rock frog was placed there by the 2011 Tohoku tsunami, which had flattened the low lying houses in the area.
The tsunami also impacted the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, who's cooling system later failed, causing an explosion and the spread of radioactive particles into the atmosphere. The Fukushima Disaster museum captured the sheer magnitude of the affects that the compound disaster had on the people in the area, and the sheer force behind the tsunami.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This also really made me think about the similarities between the Tohoku 2011 disaster and the black summer bushfires in Australia - Tohoku's scale and impact was so unimaginably large, but both have lasting impacts; even if Australia's has been shorter and hasn't had to worry about nuclear radiation. While driving through places that had been affected by the tsunami, the missing buildings and blank plots of land really felt very close to what we still see in some places in Australia, for me Cobargo's main street came to straight to mind when I saw them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a really tragic place, but seeing their slow recovery highlighted the area's resiliency, to even something of this magnitude.

Hello I saw you reblog a post from me and add into the tags some very interesting info about species in Australia being adapted specifically for wildfires. Do you have any more fun facts for me to read about this subject? Ive never heard of it before and thoroughly enjoyed reading your tags. Tysm and have a great night/day!
Hi! Yes I do!
So a fire regime is the pattern, frequency, seasonality, and intensity of fire disturbance in a particular ecosystem over long periods of time. A whole lot of places in Australia are ecosystems that've adapted to exist in a fire regime, and the timing between fires tends to be fairly short (compared to a lot of other countries/bioregions). So a lot of species- mostly plants- have become really specialised because of this.
There's a lot of ways that plant species have adapted to frequent fires (many need fire in order to reproduce!). This includes extreme heat releasing seeds (e.g., heating up sap until the seedpod explodes and sends seeds everywhere), plants that resprout quickly after leaves have been scorched off, smoke and heat breaking through seed dormancy by sending the right temperature/chemical signals, etc.
There's also a bunch of things that aren't adaptations but are ways fire can help certain species! The ashbed is really rich in nutrients, and with much of the undergrowth burned away there's a lot more sunlight, improved windflow, decreased herbivore activity- all things that promote establishment of pioneer species, which are first-in hardy species that settle in after a big disturbance, AND help those seeds released by/after the fire to get going. This changes the environment, and eventually, these pioneer species get out-competed by other species that take a big longer to get established and tend to have different traits. (kind of goes pioneer -> building -> mature -> degenerate or disturbance -> back to pioneer! it's a whole cycle).
As the plant species change, the environment changes, and the animal species change as well! If you look at small mammal succession after fire, you'll see that different mammals are present at different times after a fire as vegetation (and other factors) change.
Basically, a bit of burning in Australia leads to maximum diversity with a variety of successional stages. And this means higher recovery potential and resilience in the face of other potential disasters!
And of course there are animals that have adapted to fire in interesting ways, like fire hawks. These are birds like the Black Kite, Whistling Kite, and Brown Falcon and they work both solo AND together to spread fires! They do it by picking up burning sticks and dropping them in other places. The reason is because it's how they hunt- but it plays an important role in the ecosystem. Aboriginal Australians have plenty of stories and knowledge about this and take it into account in their care of the land- but until recently most non-Aboriginal people involved in land management were super skeptical about it so it wasn't factored into any planning or policy.
Of course climate change is absolutely fucking all of this and turning all our fires into devastating megafires which are definitely NOT good for the ecosystem so....
Um anyway sorry I wrote so much, hope the fun facts interested you!
Some links with further info/explained better:
Trying to manage fires and recreate healthy fire regimes
Fire and seed germination
If you happen to want to read an old but very important academic book on the subject, which I have only skimmed
Open-access article on fire as an ecological process
Evolutionary history of fire-stimulated traits in plants
I highly recommend doing some research on the topic (for fun) because it's super interesting, especially how fire has driven evolution of Australian species!
P.S. hope you don't mind me posting this publicly, but thought I'd share in case anyone else was also interested :)

Understand Grant Application Requirements
Tumblr media
Are you a grant writer looking to master the art of grant writing? Having a keen understanding of grant application requirements is essential for any successful grant writer. Knowing what to look out for in the process can make or break your chances of getting your proposal accepted.
This article will provide an overview of the essential elements needed to successfully craft a successful grant application. We will explore the different components of a basic application, how to identify and address key criteria, and where to find guidance for those unfamiliar with the process.
Grants Overview
A grant is a contribution of money from the government or other organisations to support non-profits, businesses, or individuals for purposes such as research, expansion, disaster recovery, specific initiatives or projects. Grants from the government are funded at the federal, state, or local levels. Large corporations, such as mining and energy companies, frequently provide grants to the communities in where they operate. The purpose of any grant is to help organisations or individuals pursue their goals and vision that would otherwise be difficult to finance on their own.
The application process for grant funding varies from one organisation to another; however, most require applicants to provide detailed information about their project, including its purpose and expected outcomes.
Types of Grants
There are many different types of grants that a grant writer might apply for, therefore they need to ensure they focus on the one that is the best fit for purpose. Types of grants in Australia include, but are not limited to:
Infrastructure Grants
Disaster Relief Grants
Community Grants
Disability Grants
Arts and Culture Grants
Indigenous Grants
Business Innovation Grants
Technology Grants
Volunteer Grants
Health and Wellness Grants
Youth & Children Grants
And many more
Eligibility Requirements
If you're a grant writer, knowing which grants to apply for and ensuring that you meet all the eligibility criteria can be time consuming and complicated, but it's a necessary step before beginning the grant writing process. This should be the first and foremost step taken by grant writers as it will save expending a lot of time on grants that the organisation may not even be eligible to apply for.
Eligibility requirements for grants are often very specific, and can include things such your registered organisation type, budget size, operating region, ability to co-contribute or length of project duration. Once these criteria are found to match your project and organisation, then you can move forward with applying for the grant!
Types of Funding
Successful grant writing requires an understanding of the types of funding available. Knowing the difference between matching, unrestricted and project grants is essential when researching to find the most suitable grant for your organisation. A professional grant writer with experience in completing applications for organisations should be familiar with these types of grants.
Matching grants are designed to provide funding that is equal to or greater than what is supplied by the organisation. The funds may be used for equipment, training or other needs. Unrestricted grants allow organisations greater flexibility in how they use the money as it can be used for operating expenses or other purposes that support their mission. Finally, project grants are typically awarded to organisations to fund specific projects such as new construction, technology upgrades or launching a new program.
Components of The Application
The first step when applying for grants is to determine which components are essential for the particular grantor’s application requirements. This includes the scope of work and budget narrative, as well as other items such as references and letters of support. The grantor may also have specific forms they require applicants to fill out in addition to their application documents. It's important to read these requirements carefully and make sure all necessary documents are included before submitting your proposal.
Writing a Proposal
Within their proposal, the grant writer should include research data, background information about the organisation receiving funds and detailed descriptions of how those funds will be used if awarded. It should also contain measurable goals and objectives that are achievable within the timeframe outlined by the grantor. Working with an experienced grant writer or participating in a workshop for grant writing can help ensure you understand all components necessary for submitting an effective application.  Additionally, these resources can also provide tips on creating persuasive narratives surrounding your intended project or program to demonstrate its impact on achieving desired outcomes.
Addressing Key Evaluation Criteria
For those new to grant writing, understanding what the evaluator will be looking at when they read your proposal is critical. The criteria can vary, depending on the funder, but there are some common elements that should always be included. Sometimes, the grant guideline documentation will contain a separate section which outlines the actual weighting assigned against specific grant writing questions. Other times, the grant writer needs to look more at the holistic picture of the grant purpose, objectives and the organisation behind the grant to identify their vision and key focus areas.
Seeking Professional Guidance
A professional grant writer can be a perfect ally for any organisation attempting to secure grants. These grant writers specialise in researching and writing grants that are tailored to meet each organisation’s needs.
Professional grant writers provide expert insight into how best to craft a proposal that will stand out from competitors. They also aid in forecasting potential outcomes of projects and identifying various sources of funding. Additionally, they have knowledge of what should be included in a proposal as well as being able to identify key criteria needed for successful applications.
Having an experienced grant writer on your side can be invaluable when you're looking for funding opportunities or navigating the application process. With their help, you are likely to see greater success with your grant applications!

Cart Abandonment: Your Enemy, Affordable E-commerce Websites in Sydney: Your Weapon
Cart abandonment. It's the bane of any online store owner's existence. You've invested time, money, and effort into attracting customers to your website, only to see them pile their virtual shopping carts high with goodies and then...disappear into the digital abyss. Statistics show that in Australia, the average cart abandonment rate hovers around 70%, meaning a significant portion of potential sales are slipping through your fingers.
For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Australia, particularly those struggling with their digital presence, these lost sales can be a major blow. But fear not! There are strategies you can implement to recover these abandoned carts and turn those window shoppers into loyal customers. Here's where affordable e-commerce websites in Sydney come in.
The Power of Affordable E-commerce Websites in Sydney
Before diving into cart abandonment recovery tactics, let's address the foundation: your online store. An outdated, clunky website riddled with technical issues can be a major contributor to cart abandonment. Imagine a potential customer browsing your online store, only to encounter a slow loading page, a confusing checkout process, or hidden fees popping up at the last minute. Frustration sets in, and they abandon their cart, likely never to return.
Affordable web design in Sydney offer a solution. Talented developers can create a user-friendly, visually appealing online store that streamlines the shopping experience. Here's how a well-designed e-commerce website helps reduce cart abandonment:
Seamless User Experience (UX): A user-friendly website allows customers to navigate your store effortlessly, find products quickly, and complete the checkout process smoothly. This reduces friction and frustration, encouraging them to finalize their purchases.
Mobile Responsiveness: In today's mobile-first world, a website that displays poorly on smartphones and tablets is a recipe for disaster. Affordable e-commerce websites in Sydney ensure your online store is optimized for all devices, providing a smooth user experience regardless of how customers access your store.
Clear Product Information: High-quality product images, detailed descriptions, and clear pricing eliminate confusion and hesitation at checkout. Customers feel confident in their purchase decisions, reducing the likelihood of cart abandonment.
Transparent Checkout Process: Make the checkout process simple and transparent. Display all costs upfront, including shipping and taxes, and avoid surprise fees at the final step. Additionally, offer multiple secure payment options to cater to customer preferences.
Cart Abandonment Recovery Strategies: Reclaiming Lost Sales
With a user-friendly, affordable e-commerce website as your foundation, let's explore strategies to recover those abandoned carts:
Identify the Reasons for Abandonment: Understanding why customers abandon carts is crucial. Use website analytics tools to track user behavior and identify common pain points. Are customers encountering technical issues during checkout? Are shipping costs too high? Is the return policy unclear? Once you understand the "why," you can address the issues and prevent future abandonment.
Targeted Email Campaigns: Abandoned cart emails are powerful tools to win back potential customers. Affordable e-commerce website solutions often integrate seamlessly with email marketing platforms. Use these platforms to send automated emails reminding customers about their abandoned carts and offering incentives to complete their purchases. These incentives could be discounts, free shipping offers, or exclusive product recommendations.
Exit-Intent Popups: Exit-intent popups appear when a customer moves their mouse cursor towards the browser window's top corner, indicating they might be leaving the site. These popups can offer last-minute discounts, free shipping promotions, or live chat support to address any concerns and encourage them to complete their purchase.
Offer Guest Checkout: Some customers might be hesitant to create an account during checkout. Offering a guest checkout option reduces friction and allows them to complete their purchase quickly and easily.
Retargeting Ads: Retargeting allows you to show targeted ads to customers who have previously visited your website and abandoned their carts. These ads can remind them about the products they left behind and incentivize them to return and complete their purchase.
Affordable E-commerce Websites in Sydney: Streamlining the Recovery Process
Affordable e-commerce websites in Sydney can further empower you to streamline cart abandonment recovery:
Automated Emails: Leverage built-in functionalities within your e-commerce platform to set up automated email sequences. These can be triggered when a cart is abandoned, reminding customers about forgotten items and offering incentives to return.
Abandoned Cart Analytics: Many affordable e-commerce platforms offer abandoned cart analytics. These tools provide valuable insights into customer behavior and abandonment reasons. This data helps you refine your recovery strategies and target your efforts effectively.
Conclusion: Turning Abandoned Carts into Loyal Customers with Affordable E-commerce Websites in Sydney
Cart abandonment can be a significant hurdle for any online store. However, with the right strategies and tools, you can turn those abandoned carts into valuable sales. Here's how:
Invest in an affordable e-commerce website in Sydney. A user-friendly, well-designed website minimizes friction and streamlines the shopping experience, significantly reducing cart abandonment rates.
Implement strategic cart abandonment recovery tactics. Leverage email campaigns, exit-intent popups, retargeting ads, and other strategies to re-engage lost customers and entice them to complete their purchases.
Track and analyze your results. Monitor key metrics to assess the effectiveness of your efforts and continuously refine your approach for optimal results.

Invest significant political and financial capital in wildfire prevention, preparedness and recovery.
In June 2023, as thousands of wildfires raged in Canada, the skies in New York turned orange with haze and smoke. For the first time, New York topped the list of cities with the worst air quality, and health advisories were issued advising residents to stay indoors. It was a dramatic reminder that environmental crises have no boundaries and should be a concern for us all.
Every year, from Canada and the United States to the Amazon and the Arctic, across Africa, Asia and Europe, wildfires take a heavy toll on the environment and wildlife, as well as human lives and infrastructure. The recognized costs of wildfires are usually based on direct economic consequences in the public sector, including costs associated with fire suppression, insurance, the loss of assets and, above all, the loss of lives. However, wildfires also have broad and long-lasting impacts on social, economic and environmental sustainability.
It is estimated that globally, wildfire-induced air pollution is associated with 340,000 premature deaths from respiratory and cardiovascular issues. The negative economic effects of wildfires are mounting. The 2018 California Camp Fire is estimated to have caused around 19 billion dollars in direct costs, while the 2019-20 wildfires in Australia resulted in 23 billion dollars in direct costs. It is also estimated that 6 million homes in the United States are now considered uninsurable due to wildfire risk.
Globally, more than two thirds of the wildfires that took place from 2001 to 2018 occurred in Africa; the largest areas burned (exceeding 500 million hectares) were located in Eastern and Southern Africa, Western and Central Africa, Oceania (mainly Australia), Northern Africa and South America. As the increasing effects of climate change and land-use change make wildfires more frequent and intense, it is estimated that we could witness a global increase in the occurrence of extreme fires of up to 14 per cent by 2030, 30 per cent by 2050 and 50 per cent by the end of this century.
Wildfires affect all biomes, from forests and savannahs to grasslands and tundra. Globally, over 370 million hectares of land burn every year, releasing over 1.8 billion tons of greenhouse gases. Wildfires in forests account for 5 per cent of land burned but contribute to more than 80 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate change, unsustainable land use and deforestation are among the key drivers of wildfires. Climate change exacerbates wildfire risk through increased drought, high air temperatures, low relative humidity, dry lightning and strong winds. In the last 30 years, climate change is estimated to have doubled the total forest area burned in the western United States. Unsustainable land use and environmental degradation reduce the resilience of natural ecosystems to wildfires, while deforestation and drainage of peatlands worsen drought conditions and increase flammability.
Although eliminating the risk of future wildfires is not feasible, we can do more to manage and reduce risks. Failure to act now would jeopardize achievement of the Global Forest Goals, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement on climate change and other development goals. Restoring the health of our biomes, reverting them from tinderboxes to resilient ecosystems, requires urgent action to develop integrated approaches to wildfire management and climate mitigation, applying scientific knowledge, working in partnership with stakeholders and strengthening international cooperation.
Comprehensive strategies and integrated approaches for wildfire management should include elements related to risk mitigation and prevention, fire suppression, and post-disaster recovery plans. Historically, the focus of wildfire management has been more on suppression rather than on prevention and mitigation; this approach needs to change. Integrated fire management and its five key elements—review and analysis, risk reduction, readiness, response and recovery (the 5Rs)—offer a good methodology in this context.
Mitigating climate change and adapting to extreme wildfires must be tackled simultaneously. It is important to include sustainable land use, sustainable forest management and fire management in national sustainable development plans, as well as in strategies on climate change adaptation and mitigation, and biodiversity conservation. Furthermore, Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and Voluntary National Contributions to achieve the Global Forest Goals of the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests provide an opportunity to simultaneously advance a synergetic forest-climate agenda to reduce the risks of wildfires.
Applying scientific knowledge can help to improve early warning systems through advanced technologies and science-based landscape and forest management strategies. Greater use of modern technologies in monitoring, detecting and controlling fires, such as through remote sensing and real-time alarm systems, can help in this regard.
Active participation by stakeholders is critical for the effective implementation of wildfire management strategies. The engagement of Indigenous peoples and local communities, scientific experts and the private sector is particularly important. Incorporating traditional knowledge, experiences and wildfire practices of local communities and Indigenous peoples in wildfire management strategies is also beneficial.
Finally, international cooperation is vital for concerted global action to curb wildfires. Wildfires pose a serious risk to sustainable development due to their impacts on human health, climate, pollution and economies. Delegates at the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) have repeatedly highlighted how uncontrolled wildfires pose a growing threat to the health of the world’s forests and the need for greater investment in fire control and management. Global and regional collaborative initiatives include the Global Wildland Fire Network and its regional networks; Regional Fire Management Resource Centres; Regional Fire Monitoring Centres; and the new Global Fire Management Hub, launched in May 2023 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In October 2023, the Government of India will convene a country-led initiative in support of UNFF to enable Forum members to share best practices in the long-term management of forests, growing challenges related to forest fire prevention and management, and issues related to forest certification. Such initiatives help to promote technological collaboration and exchange of scientific data, capacity development, and training in fire management and research.
For millennia, our ancestors used fire as a land management tool to improve hunting conditions, clear vegetation for agriculture and grazing, and control pests. While the landscapes we live in today are markedly different, we still have the knowledge and tools we need to mitigate the risk of uncontrolled wildfires. Restoring our balance with nature is possible if we choose to invest significant political and financial capital in wildfire prevention, preparedness and recovery. It might then be also possible to restore hope for a climate-resilient future, one that includes green forests and blue skies for all.
