Peppered diestel turkey on sale at my local grocery store babeyyyy plus baby Swiss for the ones I had at home! The first six of them on brioche buns and the other two on sliced sourdough (because I ran out of brioche)(but it’s also on sale at my local grocery store so I might get more). THE CORPSE OF  THE BLACK FLAME STATUS: RECOVERED  [ Reliquary Masterpost ]

A fireproof ossuary containing the skull, fragmented bones, and ash of an adult human male. Despite not having any particular powers, its provenance and history deem it valuable enough to be contained. 

Before one can even properly cover Pope, one must go back to the first Black Flame.

Raimund Diestel was a deserter of the German Army during World War I. Spending his desertion in Bangkok as a drunk, he frequented opium dens, and worked as a guide simply to make ends meet. In the early 1920s, he was recruited by occultist and adventurer Sara Jewell in an expedition to find the temple of The Black Flame. Through misadventure and attempting to save a girl’s life, the cultists revealed that he was the true sacrifice and thus became The Black Flame. A supernatural being of unknown origin (ie neither infernal, ethereal, chthonic, etc), covered entirely in the flame that will render anything to ash. 

Sometime in the early 1930s, the Black Flame would resurface in America, hired by an American gangster for his services. After a scuffle with infamous (and equally interesting) vigilante, The Lobster, Diestel was arrested and kept under lock and key. Upon hearing about the man, the occult-obsessed Adolf Hitler organized a prison break in 1932 in order to free and recruit Diestel into the Nazi fold. Diestel served Hitler loyally until his destruction in  September 1944 facing the United State’s experimental “Sledgehammer”. (See Files 001244519440125 “Project Epithemeus”, and  001244820140312 “Sledgehammer Vril Energy Suit”).

In the following decades, not much is known on what had become of the corpse of Diestel. Sometime the 2000s it came into the possession of Landis Pope, CEO of the Zinco Corporation and a collector of Nazi paraphernalia. At the aid of the frog monsters that spawned from Crab Point, Pope designed, developed, and built a suit of armor with the intent of becoming a vessel of the Black Flame, and successfully completed the ritual. (In truth, this had been part of the frog monsters’ plan to help bring about one of the Odgru Hem back to this plane of existence).

Here it gets murky, Pope clearly lost his humanity, but after recovering internal Zinco R&D records, it appeared they also tried to revive him using one of the Oannes Society’s superhuman bodies (See File #9900279200160320 “Garden of Souls Incident”). Pope was revived and was a shell of his former self, a merciless supernatural being the like Diestel could ever imagine. Taking control of the New York Metropolitan area, he sealed it off and ruled like a god-king, connected to the people in a now city of horrors. (My eema and ma, blessed in memory, were two of his myriad victims.)

After many years of no contact with the city, in a joint operation between the BPRD and the Russian Special Science Services, it was revealed the true extent of what the city had been under. Shortly after an assault on Zinco followed, and was only successful with the join efforts of Special Agent Elizabeth Sherman and the now twice deceased Special Agent Johann Kraus (using the now-recovered Epimetheus suit). 

During a post-operation sweep of the city, what remained of body was very little but recovered nonetheless by me. While originally in the Bureau’s relic storage, it was moved to my personal reliquary.  While I doubt anything will happen, I rather would be safe than sorry.
