Characters that had better redemption arcs than Zuko:
Disclaimer; while I do criticise the series I do actually like it overall. There are just some things that don’t sit right with me because of the time the show was made in. While I recognise how revolutionary Zuko’s redemption arc was that does not make it immune to criticism.
The first point we need to address is “what am I measuring “better” by?”. That goes into the issues with Zuko’s redemption arc to begin with. Zuko’s redemption has always felt a little shallow to me. He spends most of the series chasing and trying to capture/kill a 12 year old in the name of colonisation and then has a crisis of faith when he realises that the side he fought for no longer served him. He doesn’t address the toxic mindsets he was raised with, he merely changes sides.  how I am determining what characters did better is is they made a conscious change in behaviour and mindset. Lets’ get into it, i’ll try to limit myself to three paragraphs.
1. Li Ping/ The Serpent.-Detentionaire
For the uninitiated,  The Serpent. was an antagonist in the latter parts of Detentionaire. The series followed Lee Ping, the son of Korean immigrants as he tries to find the culprit who set him up for a schoolwide prank that got him a year of detention. through the series Ping battles rivals, brainwashing and shadow governments, uncovers family secrets and confronts old family demons.
The Serpent [who i will be calling Li to keep thing brief] was apart of said Shadow Government and Lees older brother. He was raised by the Council as a weapon and he encounters Lee and his friends on quite a few occasions.Li doesn’t have many interests that we know of, we know he’s a bit immature and that he loves his snake Priscilla. When he discovers that he was taken by Council not given up he turns on them, getting captured and giving Lee and his friends time to escape. Ther series was canceled so we never get to see where his story goes.
Li changes his actions because when he realises that his biological family did not abandon him he has no reason to fight them and with the understanding of the lies he was fed he’s done being manipulated.
2. Stanley Pines-Gravity falls
When twins Mabel and Dipper Pines are forced to stay with their Grunkle Stan in the mystery shack, they discover that there is  more to this sleepy town and in it’s off colour residents.
So spoiler, Grunkle Stanford Pines was laying about his identity. When Grunkle Stan was younger he had a twin brother, Stanford. Ford was the smart one while Stan was the strong one but they were close until an accident with Fords science project caused a rift between the brothers. they meet up years later as adults and Stan is a con man living paycheck to paycheck and Ford has fallen into the supernatural happenings of the town. A fight causes the portal Ford was building to activate and suck him up. Stanley goes on to assume his brother’s identity and try to find the other journals to rebuild the portal and save his brother.
When we meet him he’s still up to his old tricks and he can be harsh sometimes, but he genuinely loves his niblings. In the end he sacrifices his memories to defeat the ultimate evil. He’s a shady guy by all means, but by the time he saves his brother he has more than redeemed himself.
3. Pacifica Northwest- Gravity Falls
In the beginning Pacifica is a bit of a one dimensional bully, she is as Dipper says ‘the worst”. As we see her more however he has a miniature redemption arc. We realise that her parents are controlling and abusive and she genuinely does not know better.  During the Northwests ball her house is being haunted by a vengeful ghost that pertifies everyone. Pacifica learns that her family is not that great and decides to break the cycle and let the undesirables in. This frees the ghost and saves everyone.
While Pacifica is a minor character her redemption is set up and gradual and shown in a way that does not obstruct the overall narrative. her redemption is earned through addressing the abuse she suffered and changing her behaviour, even she she cannot change the behaviour of others, she’s only a kid after all.
4. Catra-SPOP
Spop follows child soldiers and childhood friends,  Catra and Adora and their  pains and adventures on both sides as they make their way back to each other.
Catra is a villian for most of the series. Because we benefit from her direct perspective her abuse under Shadow Weaver, Hordak and Horde Prime is well documented an ongoing and, in her mind, unescapable. Catra does show vulnerability despite this on multiple occasions and it’s usually unaddressed or punished, this creates a cycle of her pushing people away to keep herself safe. When she sets off the portal she doesn’t have any real idea of what will happen, she just knows there’s a chance she’ll also dies and that doesn’t sound too bad. She finally snaps out of it and saves Glimmer from Horde Prime, sacrificing herself to a fate worse than death in the process. Over the rest of season five hse gets closer to the Best friend squad and apologises even saving the world by letting love in.
Catra learns that it is by letting yourself be loved that you become worthy of it. While her actions with the Horde are not good, she knows that. Much like Pacifica, she just does not know a better life or rather feel she deserves one. Catra is only accepted when she proves she has changed beyond a doubt. the choices she makes throughout the series that show the glimmer [hehe]that she might be better underneath come from her. No one makes her give Adora the sword back, no one makes her toast Scorpia in the Crimson Wastes, no one makes her get Glimmer off the ship, no one but her.
5. Amity Blight
When Luz Noceda ends up on the Boiling Isles she meets a cast of characters, among them is Amity Blight. the youngest daughter of the Blight family, abomination prodigy and self important snob. We first meet her bullying Willow Park. When Lux aggress to help Willow cheat Amity calls her out on it, while a bit heavy handed in approach she’s not wrong. They meet again at the convention where she challenges Luz to a witches duel. cue Lilith cheating and the girls bonding a little.
Amity’s actions don’t go far from the realm of petty bullying but as season 1 goes on she starts to gain more depth. Controlling parents, self esteem issues and a surprising gift with kids. She and Luz start to for a mutual friendship and then Amity enters her tomato era. She stands up to her mother and apologises to Willow, they make peace and become friends again.
Amity becomes a better person, which isn’t unrealistic, she’s a kid who unlearns toxic mindsets though finding someone able to see more than the top student. her better qualities come out and she leaves her old friends. It looks like Skara also abandons Boscha, so good for her to.

DpxDc prompt with a dash of detentionaire
So this is an idea that was floating in my head.
Free to use
So Danny is the new kid at Gotham Academy and on his very first day he gets framed for an explosion in the chemistry lab so that means detention for the year. This also means Danny has to sneak out during detention, gather evidence, and get back before the teacher who is supposed to monitor him gets back from the teacher's lounge, it escalates to him sneaking out at night as well. He's coming up on week three of this when he gets a new friend in detention by the name of Tim Drake who also wants to figure out who destroyed the chemistry lab. Now Danny has to figure out a way out of detention without phasing through the door/walls/floors, or ceiling and to get Tim to stop asking questions. Tim wants to know exactly what Danny's deal is because he's pretty sure Danny's a meta because he's pretty sure he saw him density shift his arm through his locker to get some books when his locker wouldn't open.

Soooo. I've been gone a while. What was supposed to be Week Six became more like "Two Months" Six. My bad. I can't promise that random breaks won't happen, but I'll do my level best to not let them become longer than a week if they do (knock on wood - the last time I said "I'll try not to take anymore random breaks" i dipped for a month).

Betcha didn’t think you’d be seeing Sihana, Elira and Bianca again so soon, didn’t ya? WELL YOU ARE! I did tell you this was to be an OC-filled weekend! Anyway, this was a random little drawing I came up with the same day I designed and drew Sihana, Elira and Bianca (Toby had already been drawn before): obviously, given what I’ve told you about them, Sihana and Elira aren’t exactly on the best terms. Naturally, if the two were to start an argument, someone would have to be there to make sure said argument didn’t escalate into a physical brawl. And since this is a very-meta, very crack-y meetup between the sisters and my cool cat Bianca and my aquatic gentleman Toby (the latter 2, incidentally, would totally make a great crossover ship, given that they’re both very skilled in the game of love, are fun-loving people, have interesting backgrounds and have water-inspired powers) (Bianca has ice powers à la waterbenders and Toby is a shapeshifting merman (Atlantean) with electric powers like a super-powered eel) are sadly tasked with restraining them. Hope you guys enjoy their struggles! XD REFERENCES: None to be had except the character designs! DISCLAIMERS: Loonatics Unleashed © Warner Bros. Fandom tag
I was tagged by: @magical-beta
You have to choose 3 fandoms, answer the questions and tag 10 people
Fandoms : Detentionaire | Edna and Harvey | Ninjago
The first character you loved : Camilio | gonna be super meta and say it was Edna | Zane
The character you didn’t expect to love so much : probably Nadene, she’s very cool | Adrian! He’s a lot cooler than I actually remembered | Bansha
The character you relate the most to : probably Lee, but my paranoia isn’t nearly as bad. I think. | Lilli, lol | The Mailman
The character you’d slap : Blompkins | Doctor Marcel | Idk, Harumi? haven’t even seen s8, only s9 and she did nasty stuff but I don’t know any other characters I’d slap tbh
Three favorite characters in order of preference : Cam, Jenny, Brandy | Edna/Harvey (count as both), Droggelbecher, Stiesel | Zane, Cole, Kai
A character you loved at first but don’t anymore : Holger got kinda grating on my nerves, but he’s not a bad character | Capu | Idk honestly, I’ll leave this out. Maybe I’ll find one later
A character you did not like at first but you do now: Suprisingly, Brandy. Though my turning point for liking her came very early on | Mother Superior, but only because I liked her ending | Kai, ever since that ep where he saved Lloyd from the volcano
Three OTPs: I have literally hundreds as of now (bless the headcanons @ discord), but ig when going by canon my three picks are Cam/Brandy, Tina/Jenny and Chaz/Stepak | Edna/Stiesel, Edna/Droggelbecher, Suka/Shy | Polyninja minus Nya and Lloyd, Nya/Skylor/PIXAL, Ronin/Dareth (and bonus Tox/Chamille)
I tag: @sheyffer @monstriframinerva @mediasploshion  and everyone else who wants to, I literally just ran out of people, but hey, maybe I forgot someone (or in some cases was too shy to tag).

Modern satire.
I’ve been watching a show from my childhood recently; Detentionaire. Through my rewatch I’ve noticed a lot of thing, from the overwhelming diversity that would have contemporary conservative commentators frothing at the mouth to the stunning use of visual foreshadowing. More so I’ve noticed the clever and loving use of satire that lends itself to the shows  comedy and how it contrasts with modern, cynical; “meta humour”.
Detentionaire follows Tenth Grader Lee Ping after he is framed for a prank on the first day of school that skyrockets him into the upper echelons of highschool coolness and lands him a year of detention. Through his investigation he uncovers a conspiracy that changes his life and will make any future therapists of his absurdly wealthy. [spoilers start here]
The show uses elements of the spy/action genre as well a sci-fi and mystery. The writing calls attention to the absurdity and cliches that it employs in a   fascinating way; with it being used by characters we’re not supposed to take seriously such as Lynch Webber [ a minor antagonist] when he has Jenny and Tina [Lee’s friend and crush] tied up because he wants to extort Lee for an important item. When jenny and Tina question him on this and point out he could have just taken Lee; “ Hello!. I’m the bad guy, he’s the hero  and you are one of two damsels in distress and I am in the middle of explaining something?”.  It’s also used with characters who have an established interest in this kind of things or who are there mostly for comedy like Brad [another minor antagonist]. As seen in the season 2 episode “School Hard” when he assigns arbitrary roles[Bad boy seeking redemption;Lee] to the students as they try to avoid the schools robot cleaners who are going on a rampage  and are shooting things with crystal guns and continues to rationalise the events through that, even asking for a second take for his “breakdown” when Biffy [One of Lee’s friends who was  assigned  “Muscle with a heart of gold”]  gets crystalised .
This kind of meta humour can only comes from a deep love and respect for the genre that you’re trying to satirise and it’s brilliance has made me examine a lot of modern and cynical satire that's seems almost embarrassed by the tropes it uses.
One of the most recent examples is HBO Max’s Velma which pokes fun at the Mystery Gang in a way that falls flat, ignoring years of characterisation for shallow and one note jokes. Detentionaire was able to keep up the meta humour well into it’s fourth season and even have straight goofy sub plots because they contrasted and gave reprieve from the moments where Lee was questioning his own  sanity. Meanwhile Velma seems ashamed and scornful of the characters and genre it’s trying to be.
What is satire without love?.

Azula and The Serpent are the same character
I was thinking about one of my older posts “Vi and MIscha Bachinski are the same character” and I was thinking about other characters that are similar.  Maybe it’s just because I’m currently rewatching Detentionaire but I find a lot of similarities between Azula and the Serpent/Li Ping.
Tumblr media
Avatar needs no introduction but as Detentionaire is a relatively unknown series [even though it shouldn’t be because it’s amazing] I’ll recap it. Warning for spoilers; Detentionaire follows tenth grader Lee Ping as he tries to prove his innocence after being framed for an epic prank that skyrockets him into high school popularity and lands him a year of detention. In his quest he uncovers a conspiracy that he’s in the middle of and didn’t even know it. The Serpent is an antagonist from the latter part of the series  and Lee’s older brother. Revealed to have been stolen from his family and raised by the villains as a weapon with only Priscilla, his pet snake, as his companion. He’s revealed to have been working against another of the main antagonists after their biss, His Eminence, tells him he has a real family and turns on both of them when he discovers that the boss was the one who ordered it
There are of course a few key differences; for one Azula is a fourteen year-old girl while Li is a 20 year old man. Li also manages to break the cycle and join the hero's while Azula is never given that chance. Li is also an older sibling not a younger sibling and has a much bigger age difference with Lee [five years].
Now for the similarities; Like Azula Li Ping was raised to be a weapon and wraps most of his identity in his usefulness and fighting. Much like Azula he also has a sibling who has the love he craves, Zuko and Ursa for Azula and Lee and his parents for Li.
Both are smug little shits {Azula:You were never even a player} and {Li:  [coin flip] heads I win, tails..[insert cool fighting] you lose}. Whether it gets acknowledged or not they care about people {Azula:Thought I’d find you here} and  {Li; you can mess with me all you want but no one messes with Priscilla}.
Both give fratricide a chance with Azula fighting Zuko after he betrays the Fire Nation and Li fighting his younger brother on multiple occasions. They also indirectly and directly save their sibling. Azula when she taunts Zuko about how Azulon ordered his death, an action that leads to Azulons poisoning as well as  when she twists a canon dead or alive order to put Zuko back in the palace. For Li this is when he does not tell his foster mother about Lee getting the book they need and when he actually saves Lee and his friends from her in the final episodes.
Both also have a younger sibling who they view as a replacement with the only difference being that Azula’s not wrong about the narrative seeing Kiyi as a replacement for her and Li is.
