Carry On Art Remix

When I first saw this art by @krisrix , I wanted to spend hours staring at it. I wanted to trace it. I wanted to eat it. So I jumped right away at the chance to remix it for @coartremix. Seriously, I was so excited that I started making drafts as soon as I sent in my selection.

To me this Simon at his most clean-cut hero. He's in his uniform, wearing his cross and wielding the Sword of Mages. He's full of magic and purpose, sure that he's doing the right thing. Kris' digital colour effects make him look almost painfully magical, right before he goes off.

Since I was going to do this in a traditional medium, I decided to take away the magic. This is a Simon who's older and sadder. His hair's a mess, he's wearing an old, stretched-out top and using a broomstick as a weapon. It's not actually a scene from canon, just more the vibe of Simon after his magic and purpose were gone. But his expression is unchanged. He's still just as dangerous.

I live on the west side of the country to avoid hurricanes and humidity. The first rain is here, every plant is going crazy, and every inch of me itches because of it all.

No, spiders, go back outside, you don't belong in the house.

We couldn't find a place to live fast enough not it's like we can't get out of here fast enough. The place knows and it no hard feelings.

Next door dog finished off the rest of the bread Satan. It was rock hard and he was delighted with it. All your bread failures, as long as they have dog safe ingredients and ratios, make great treatos. Need something for teething puppers? Rock hard bread.

Played around with some watercolors yesterday. I have tinted charcoal in half pans, considering getting the pencils, and an earth tones set by a brand I wanted to try, along with a mix of Cotman and Prima Marketing. No idea if any are good or bad, they serve my needs or like with the charcoal I'm still getting to know them.

I think I'll give up somewhat on comparing pencil brands. I'll still do more formal testing but in a do these meet my needs sort of way to determine which are dry, opaque, stuff like that. Unless Derwent has something new and neat, or someone else does, I really don't need anything else. Only looking at a tinted graphite I don't have and the Derwent Shade and Tone.

And I still swear if you were my artistic friend I'd probably give you the Spectrum Noir watercolors (they're fine but redundant, older set with quality control) and the one colored pencil set. The Black Widow skin tones would be next (redundancy again), and the Winsor Newton are on the fence for the same reason.

And again it's one of those things where I wouldn't want neighbors or family members to know I was thinning the heard if you know what I mean. Giving away the King Art Studio box was one thing, got it super cheap, and those SoHo from a junk run can GTFO but artists know the difference between 'nice', 'decent', and 'keeps little Billy distracted'.

New Toys

I got some charcoal pencils! Just been testing them out a bit. I'm gonna talk tools for a second (by which I mean ramble for several long paragraphs).

So I'm using a set of Derwent charcoal pencils. There's 6 in the tin (1 light, 2 medium, 2 dark and 1 white tinted charcoal pencil). They’re pretty nice, but the sharpener that comes with them isn't very good. Actually, they don't get on well with pencil sharpeners at all, as you might expect with it being charcoal. The dark pencils are particularly prone to breakage, so I ended up having to use a Stanley knife instead. They’re all very blendable, and I've played around adding water to them as well. If I dip a damp brush (a cotman watercolour brush I've had for ages) into the dust left from sharpening them, I get a kind of inky paste which is good for really dark spots. The white pencil though....if you're working on toned paper it should be fine, but it's noticeably off-white, so I haven't really been able to make use of it.

As for the other stuff, my smudging stick comes out of a Faber-Castell graphite set that I've had for ages. Same goes for the kneaded eraser (best tool ever) and the hard eraser. They're all good, they do what they're meant to.

I've also got an eraser pen thing from a brand I'm unfamiliar with, Tombow. It's very good though, does a nice job of erasing very precise areas.

And finally there's the white gel pen, a Sakura Gelly Roll. It can be a little tricky getting it to work on graphite/ charcoal, but it is quite opaque once it starts working, and is a good proper white, so it looks fine if you're using very white paper.

So yeah, just my thoughts on my new toys.

Water soluble graphite advice

So you art kids on my lawn know, that Derwent Graphitint or tinted graphite paint or what ever they call it is just Graphitint pencils in pan form. Much of what I say will probably carry over to the water soluble Shade and Tone and charcoal paint sets.

First off always use mixed media or watercolor paper.

Then don't be afraid to treat any of this like a watercolor or guache. Mix colors, push it around, glaze, lift. It will all rewet (Inktense doesn't) so you can go back and work on it more.

Pretty damn sure this one's a Graphitint because of that particular shade of purple but yeah, it comes in pencil form in 24 colors if you find out you really like it.

If you're used to watercolor pencils you'll find Graphitint, Graphitone, and Sketch and Wash to be familiar. Spectrum Noir makes tinted graphite pencils that compliment the Derwent colors. Artgraf makes a selection of water soluble graphite.

And there's a company called Artgraph which makes what they call "tailor's chalks" in earth tones, black and white, and red, yellow, and blue which are just big cakes of water soluble graphite you can draw with. If you want a white their tailor chalk is nice and thick.

If you get the woodless Graphitone pencils or Lyra crayons use a sharpener with a container to save the woodless graphite shavings, only use it for them, because you can dip a wet brush into the shavings or sprinkle them on your art and wet them.

And remember the key word is water so treat it like watercolors and lift and glaze.

A big thing is not to overwork the original sketch. If it's 50% grey or darker I'll draw it in dry. Maybe I'll do light sketching here or there for other places but I tend to push the tones around like a juicy watercolor.

If you can't lift a boo boo when it's wet wait until it's completely dry and just erase it.

Definitely wait until it's completely dry before drawing details on top if you're using a pencil.

Done in record time! I actually finished it last night but it was too dark to get any good pictures, so it's here now. I love how she turned out! I've gotten better with pastels now so I think it looks better than the last, but I still love acrylics just the same. Might post a watercolour soon, or another landscape. Day 85 I took the weekend to work on some projects around the house that I'd been putting off and they took up every last bit of energy I had. But having them off the to-do list is a great feeling and returning to art today felt even better! So I got a little lost in this one just enjoying a paper I've missed using regularly. I don't think I've ever done a landscape on it before though... Created with soft pastel sticks, panpastels, Derwent Pastel pencils and tinted charcoal on Strathmore 400 series charcoal paper. 5x7 in about 2 hours.

Well, it became easier to get rid of more art supplies when I took in redundancy as a factor, and how irritated I got when trying to do something with them.

4 brands have been given the boot, except for like one special or novel item they make. And the last piece of one is on shaky ground.

Most everything left is good stuff, I keep the Primacandles incase I have to prove a point, now it's just to see if a couple more sets either become redundant or because they're so small and most are so soft I should just use them up and wear them out.

I am getting down to the sets I will want to maintain with the buying of loose colors as I wear them out. My biggest nice set is 72, I don't see myself needing any more and having to have a dozen yellows or something.

And unless someone comes out with some really smashing tinted water soluble graphite the only thing I could see wanting is a set of Derwent tinted charcoal, should I decide I even want to use charcoal, I have a pan paint pallet and a couple of regular charcoal pencils to play with first.
