hey i’m really curious and looking for recommendations so can i ask what are ur favorite korean dramas? 🙏🏻🥺

hiii sorry it took me a moment to answer but *deep breath* sure hehe! gonna give u my top 5 and try to not scare u away by diving into deep analyses on why i love those so much! i tried to keep it simple!

my all time favourite is beyond evil it’s a thriller romance drama where a hot young man (juwon) is being coaxed towards the brink and almost ruins his life for a 40yo man (dongsik) who suffered more than jesus himself and the two of them occasionally solve crimes! im making a joke out of it but their dynamic is very meaningful and profound! it’s bitter it’s sweet it’s full of tension and compassion and understanding and Love is at the core of it all. it shows u that despite the misery despite the cruelty despite the sins and despite the violence choosing love but also life is the bravest thing u can do. it will change the trajectory of ur life! also acting legends yeo jingoo and shin hakyun deliver thrilling performances in it which will make u unable to look away! this show means the world to me!

then nr 2 comes my mister! it’s a drama to watch for healing and hard times! it’s a quiet and delicate love story between a man (donghoon) and a woman (jian) who make the other one want to Live again. it teaches u that u don’t need a reason to be kind in ur life that a simple act of kindness could mean so much to someone. their love is shown through actions through listening through subtle glances. it’s very poetic it also deals with universal themes like brotherhood friendship loneliness altruism depression vulnerability and perseverance. it fundamentally changed me as a person when i watched it the first time and it also solidified the immense love and admiration i have for iu.

nr 3 the red sleeve! the best sageuk ever made it’s abt a court lady (deokim) who values her freedom and making her own choices above all else and the future king of joseon (san) whose duty always comes first and the two fall intensely in love. it’s harrowing bc wanting them together u know u’re inevitably pushing deokim towards her downfall to sacrifice what she values most which is her free will so the drama tackles the power play btwn them bc san is often a fool and their respective love language is the opposite of what the other needs hence it’s just so good so tragic so heartbreaking! lee junho even won a baeksang last year for this role hes just so graceful and mesmerising in it and genuinely too good at acting! also deokim (played by lee seyoung) is one of my all time favourite female characters she will stick with me forever!

nr 4 strangers from hell it’s a horror romance drama where a tall hot dentist (moonjo) (played by our one and only god lee dongwook) gaslights and gatekeeps a broke aspiring writer with violent tendencies (jongwoo) into joining him so they can become gay cannibals together barely a day after jongwoo moved into their very shady residence full of psychos! closet made of glass for moonjo since he even makes jongwoo a wedding ring (a musty human teeth bracelet)! it’s insanely good i havent moved on since 2019! deliciously gory and creepy it’s aesthetically flawless on that part as well!

nr 5 is the guest! a little bit too underrated if u ask me which is a shame because it does so much for the horror genre! im grateful that the show introduced me to the ot3 of all time: a girlboss detective an overly kindhearted taxi driver and a hot priest (kim jaewook!!! screams!!!). the characters slowly bound with each other through their shared trauma and dedicate their whole life to defeat an ancient and powerful demon. so the power of their friendship is kinda everything and is the heart of the show. also the men are a little….. u know……. like episode 16 has one of the most beautiful scenes i’ve ever seen that is forever engraved in my memory! i hate them! i love this show so much just. so much!!!!!

HYOJUNG: "I think people believe that once you're ten years into your career, you've got everything figured out. I believed that as well, but now that I got here, I realized I'm still on a journey to find myself."

Hyojung's ten-year anniversary interview with WEVERSE MAGAZINE.

I still remember seeing you in a frilly shirt and white skinny jeans, singing and dancing to Tell Me Tell Me that even I can't believe it's been ten years since your debut. How does it feel knowing that you've been in this industry for a decade?

HYOJUNG: Personally, it doesn't feel like it's been ten years. A lot of years sort of blur past in my memories, but I'm thankful that I'm still able to promote to this day. It means a lot.

In past interviews, you've spoken about missing out on regular activities that young adults your age would experience, but not wanting to trade your current life for it. Does that still hold true?

HYOJUNG: It does. While I realize that there are activities and years that I can't get back because I was promoting, I also know that I've lived a pretty unique life that people my age couldn't imagine. I believe we're all on our paths for a reason, so there's no need to be envious or jealous.

They say mountains change in the span of a decade. What's changed about Jung Hyojung in the last ten years?

HYOJUNG: A lot and too little at the same time. I've definitely matured (laughs), but that's a natural phenomenon, isn't it? But I'm still trying to figure out who I am. I think people believe that once you're ten years into your career, you've got everything figured out. I believed that as well, but now that I got here, I realized I'm still on a journey to find myself. I'm not sure when that journey will end, but I hope it comes down to a happy ending.

The past few years have been very crucial in your career as you transition from an idol to an actress. What's been the most difficult part in making that change?

HYOJUNG: The eyes of everybody watching me. I try to tell myself that it doesn't matter, and that I'm like a turtle in which I move at my own speed, but I couldn't help myself from feeling like I was failing in solidifying my spot as an actress. However, I think I've partially made it. There is still so much I want to do, though, so I don't want to speak too quickly.

I know many people were shocked to see your acting in The Red Sleeve. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that's probably your representative work. How did you end up on the project?

HYOJUNG: I had to audition. The director had told me they saw me on Our Beloved Summer and felt that my emotional acting would be a fit for Deokim, but they still wanted to see an official audition. It makes sense, of course, and I was honored that they even considered me. I think I went through about five rounds of auditions before getting that role.

Filming it was probably difficult as well, as it is with most historical dramas.

HYOJUNG: It really was. We started filming around the beginning of summer, and then it lasted through winter so everybody on the production team and cast had to deal with drastic weather changes. The outfits are also very heavy, so it was difficult to film in any kind of weather, really. However, it's taught me some know-hows I can take onto my next roles, so I'm thankful.

Angelic hasn't released any new music since 2020, and everybody was so certain you would never stand on stage again. But then you released Drive earlier this year. What was the decision process behind that?

HYOJUNG: It's not that my members and I don't want to release music, but we've moved to different companies so coordinating things have been more difficult than it used to be when we were all under Everlast Entertainment. Of course, we'd love to meet our fans, but it just isn't easy. That doesn't mean I don't want to stand on stage, however, and I wanted to show my fans that. I haven't lost my passion for singing and when I was offered Drive, I thought it was the perfect song.

Does that mean we might get more Soloist Hyojung in the future?

HYOJUNG: I can't make any promises, but it'd be nice if I could, yes.

You've had some back-to-back well-received dramas. What's next? What do you want to explore?

HYOJUNG: I've received a few scripts but haven't decided on anything yet. I'm still searching for the right one that kind of comes to me immediately. I love all the roles I've played so far and wouldn't reject similar ones, but I know that my fans want to see something new as well. Maybe something that leans more towards thriller? Action, even? I'm not sure (laughs).

Any words to Jung Hyojung ten years from now, who will be celebrating her twenty year anniversary?

HYOJUNG: You've worked hard. Continue to work hard.

it’s been about a month since yumi’s cells began airing and despite all the worry that hyojung had in the beginning, it had been received fairly well. while the tv ratings weren’t anything worth showing off, it was no secret that most people turned to their mobile devices for dramas anyway. ratings didn’t matter as much as it did back when she first started acting.

what did matter was the hype that the drama got and how many views a youtube clip got, and in that sense, she thinks she’d be able to call this drama a success. shooting was still ongoing, which meant lots of lost sleep and tons of hours of memorizing scripts, but she was enjoying every moment. it was physically tiring, but she felt like she was getting something out of it.

all her previous roles had been fairly romantic as well, but she thinks yumi really takes the crown in the category. the whole webtoon was centered around her various relationships, and it’s yumi who mattered at the end of the day. her feelings, her emotions, and how she grew from every relationship. though she can’t exactly dig through her own past relationships for inspiration, it’s been nice to live as yumi for the past couple of months.

there’s a few times she can’t always understand her character as jung hyojung herself, but she thinks the writer has done a great job of showcasing why and how she goes through all her emotions. that was the whole point of the drama, wasn’t it? to show the ups and downs of relationships through yumi’s cells. it was super clever, and she remembers loving the webtoon back when she read it as well.

nothing about the comments being left about her were super new. i didn’t know deokim was an idol was the most common ever since the red sleeve. while she didn’t find it insulting, she’s not entirely sure what the mindset behind such comments is. now they do know she’s an idol. does that change anything about their perception of her? hyojung doesn’t think it should, but that would only be true in an ideal world. everybody was judgmental towards idols. they were almost like doormats. 

scrolling through the comments of a youtube clip, she smiled at how the majority seemed to be positive. it felt nice knowing that she was slowly building up her filmography this way. while her roles may be a little repetitive, she thinks she’s found something that works for her, which isn’t something that everybody could say.

there’s already been talks of a season two, and she believes filming for that will begin almost immediately as well. she’ll get to live as yumi for almost a whole year, and she was, oddly, looking forward to that.

"I don't actually need permission, from the likes of you."

An insult about her class, "You can't go five seconds without insulting me, can you?"

"Well someone has to remind you of your place." He replied nonchalantly.

"Oh yeah, since you know so much, please elaborate how have I stepped out of my place today", she was beginning to get annoyed by him.

"Okay, simply put, you shouldn't be here," he gave her a look and then pointed towards a girl refilling someone's cup, "see that girl over there? That is who you're supposed to be. Like your mother who is in charge of the arrangements today, you are 'the help'  Deokim, but somehow you always forget that."

Anger was bubbling inside of her, "why yes Deok-Ro, that is indeed my mother's occupation, 10/10 for knowing that, but you are ignorant of the fact that my parent's careers do not define me, I have my own aspirations..."

"And they mean nothing to me", he cut her off rather rudely, " Just know that someone like you has no chance with San."

"Why do you care so much? huh?"

"San is my friend. I want the best for him."

"Is he your 'friend' or just your ticket to reclaim the lost glory of your ancestors?"

11. What work took you the longest to write?

Simple! My just-shy-of-20k monstrosity, but with whom can you sit in the water? I think I worked on it for over a month, which is a big deal for me considering a lot of my works are born of hours-long motivations.

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

This is a secret. (One vegaspete for sure, a sandeok I doubt I will ever getting around to finishing, and a couple fics I've started in the spur of the moment that I am unsure will ever come to fruition.)

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

DOM DEOKIM FROM THE BODYGUARD AU SHEEESHH. So hot. She was terrible in the best way.
