While he lived in France, he served as president of the American Delphinium Society from 1935 to 1939. In the early 1930s, after leaving his position as chief of photography for the Condé Nast publications—including Vogue and Vanity Fair—and more than 10 years before beginning his career as Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA, he retired to his farm to (…)

MWW Artwork of the Day (5/9/23)
Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar (Russian, 1871-1960)
Delphiniums (c. 1903-07)
Oil on canvas, 132.5 x 112 cm.
Private Collection
The short strokes of pure pigment in "Delphiniums" create the intense sense of optical vibration for which Grabar was famous. The juxtaposition of complementary yellows and purples in the foreground is a characteristic feature of some of his most famous canvases, in particular his early snowscapes, and reflects his brilliant assimilation of Seurat and Signac's divisionist techniques. But as the well-known critic Alexei Fedorov-Davydov pointed out, Russian pointillism wasn't simply an innovative technique; it was an entirely new way of looking at landscape.

I love to paint and draw flowers, but my preference is to draw them when they are still in the ground, I very rarely paint cut flowers as a still life, I like them to be in nature.
