Rather, our Year in Review kicks off with a ranking of 2023’s 20 best series, a list created by our editors’ spirited debates and reminiscences about the past 12 months of television.
Our ranking below covers the spectrum of broadcast, cable and streaming, from the sophomore slump-less Abbott Elementary to Fargo‘s triumphant return to a standout second season for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. We’ve got returning veterans (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession) and breakout newbies (Silo, Shrinking), plus a few hidden gems from this TV year (if you’re not watching Dave… well, why not?).

Max’s showbiz satire was funnier than ever in its third (and ultimately, ugh, final) season, skewering everything from Jeff Bezos’ billionaire status to Disney’s famously tepid approach to LGBTQ+ inclusivity. Stars Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver respectively took Brooke and Cary to new, cringe-worthy lows, as Brooke made a half-hearted attempt at do-gooding and Cary’s desire for fame became even more insatiable. But The Other Two also proved it could still surprise us, wading into occasionally dramatic waters — Brooke and Lance’s breakup fight, or the surprisingly moving series finale — that were just as effective as the show’s nonstop punchlines. — Rebecca Iannucci

The Fall of the House of Usher(Netflix)

Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy ended their time at Netflix the way they started it: by scaring us silly while making us ache (in a good way!). Usher, based on various works by Edgar Allan Poe, followed the immensely satisfying formula the executive producers put forth in The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor. First, have a terrific ensemble play out an emotionally resonant saga. Then, sprinkle in just enough jump scares to distract from the deftly woven existential dread! Even better: This time around, Flanagan added heavy hitters Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell to his troupe, giving Usher a solemnity befitting the final jewel in the horror auteur’s Netflix crown. — Kimberly Roots

With its third season this spring, Davemaintained its status as one of the best shows that not enough people are talking about. The FXX comedy took a deep dive into its protagonist’s psyche as he searched for new love and interrogated his own thirst for fame. The result — as is often the case with Dave — was a bizarre, sincere, reliably funny and surprisingly cameo-filled (Brad Pitt?!) batch of episodes, building to an unpredictable finale that was as horrifying as it was hilarious. — R.I.

FX’s pitch-black crime anthology has made a triumphant return with Season 5, easily its best and most exciting outing in years. (Yes, only three episodes have aired so far, but trust us: It keeps getting better.) Juno Temple is a real spitfire as Minnesota housewife Dot, and Jon Hamm turns that old Don Draper mystique on its head as macho sheriff Roy Tillman. Season 5 strips away the indulgences that derailed previous Fargo seasons and ups the ante with a barrage of high-octane action sequences. Are we hooked again? Oh yah, you betcha. — Dave Nemetz

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds(Paramount+)

The Paramount+ show’s sophomore run was a crowd-pleasing affair that gave us a little bit of everything. From Una Chin-Riley’s thought-provoking ethics trial to that charming musical episode that had us singing its praises (and proved this cast has serious vocal chops) — and let’s not forget that bonkers crossover with the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks — Season 2 took big creative swings that elevated the show to bold new heights and yet, never forgot its roots. — Keisha Hatchett

The Great (Hulu)

The Hulu series delivered another — ahem — great season of absurdist comedy and political intrigue as Peter and Catherine finally called a truce and recommitted themselves to their marriage. The couple’s twisted romance felt especially engrossing this season, due in large part to Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult’s beautifully layered performances that were as devastating as they were funny. And the show’s needle-drop ending moment, during which Catherine danced through her grief to the tune of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long,” highlighted an invigorating season of growth and loss tinged with raucous humor. — K.H.

Set during the height of the 1980s crack epidemic, FX’s captivating drama ended its run on a series high as Franklin Saint wound up destitute and wandering the neighborhood he destroyed with drugs. Portrayer Damson Idris was brilliant in his final outing as the ruthless dealer, delivering a standout performance that deftly illustrated how greed, ego and addiction fueled the character’s gut-wrenching demise. It’s an unspeakable crime that Snowfall never received the Emmy recognition it deserved, especially after an exceptional final season that solidified its status as one of the all-time greats. — K.H.

National Geographic’s gripping retelling of Anne Frank’s tragic story didn’t get a lot of love when it was released. And that’s a shame, because the limited series — told from the perspective of Frank family friend/protector Miep Gies (excellently played by Bel Powley) — did its subjects a great service by leaning into the moments of joy that sparked even in the darkest days of the Franks’ and Gies’ lives. With a modern sensibility and an examination of hatred that sadly still reverberates throughout the world, A Small Light was a profoundly moving project anchored by the warm gravitas of Liev Schreiber as Anne’s father, Otto Frank. — K.R.

There was no sophomore slump for the hit ABC comedy, which continued to bring the laughs in its second season while also deepening its characters in ways that were both hilarious and illuminating. (Barbara’s school-fire meltdown is an unforgettable example.) With thoughtful but funny storylines, like the introduction of Janine and Melissa’s messy family dynamics, Abbott Elementary successfully expanded its scope beyond the school walls. Meanwhile, the delicious romantic tension between Janine and Gregory is still alive and well, even after the pair took some steps forward and backward in their “will they/won’t they” dynamic. — Vlada Gelman

A series about grief turned out to be one of the year’s funniest and most heartwarming. Jason Segel lit up the screen as a widower struggling to parent his teenage daughter and move on from his loss. His big life change sparked an avant-garde approach to his work as a therapist, leading him to fly off the rails personally and professionally, as the impeccable supporting cast — including Harrison Ford, Christa Miller and Jessica Williams — landed well-executed quips and touching moments. Poignant and wildly entertaining, Shrinking proved that silver linings do exist, even if dark clouds may be blocking our view. — Nick Caruso

Netflix’s story of two unhappy souls whose paths collide after a vicious road rage incident spawned both humor and tragedy, and allowed stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun to showcase their deep arsenals of talent. From comedy that bordered on absurdism to the emotional meltdowns that had our jaws scraping the floor, the series took some thrilling turns before culminating with a literal bang that nearly destroyed us. By its end, BEEF‘s flame-broiled insanity left us hoping creator Lee Sung Jin has something else to throw on the grill soon. — N.C.

Now this one was a surprise! Amazon Freevee’s wildly chaotic prank comedy flew under the radar at first, placing an unsuspecting real guy named Ronald on the jury of a completely fictional court case, but it delivered more laughs than just about anything on TV this year. The twists were almost too crazy to believe — James Marsden cracked us up playing an arrogantly entitled version of himself — but it was the underlying sweetness here, with Ronald bonding with his fellow jurors as the trial dragged on, that made all those long days in the jury box worth it. — D.N.

Executive producers Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin blended a cracking-good cast (expertly led by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey), beautifully spare scripts and loving devotion to/willingness to deviate from the source material — a post-apocalyptic zombie video game! — all to create one of the finest dramas we’ve seen in years. Let’s take a moment, as well, to acknowledge standout guest stars like Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman and Ashley Johnson, whose performances propelled the deeply moving story toward its gorgeous, albeit devastating, Season 1 conclusion. — K.R.

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has learned that IFC Films has just taken North American rights to The Nowhere Inn from Topic Studios. The pic, a fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity, is produced, written by, and stars Carrie Brownstein and Grammy winner Annie ‘St. Vincent’ Clark. Nowhere Inn also reps the feature directorial debut of frequent Portlandia collaborator and scribe Bill Benz.
The movie, which made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, marks the first feature length film in which Clark has simultaneously produced, starred and composed all the original music. A fall 2021 release is currently planned.
The Nowhere Inn is a metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and public persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives. Nine-time Emmy nominee Brownstein is real-life friends with St. Vincent, and the feature is the story of two close friends’ attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely.
The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ EVP of Acquisitions and Productions Arianna Bocco with Deborah McIntosh at Endeavor Content and Paradigm on behalf of the filmmakers.
Bocco tells Deadline, “Carrie Brownstein and Annie Clark brilliantly push the boundaries of how we communicate through film, music and comedy as only true artists can. We’re thrilled to take viewers to The Nowhere Inn and bring this unique and hilarious film to audiences and fans nationwide.”
“We are extremely proud of what we’ve created with The Nowhere,” said Brownstein and Clark. “And we couldn’t imagine a better home and partner for it than IFC Films.”
Added Ryan Heller, SVP, Film & Acquisitions for Topic Studios, “It has been our true joy to collaborate with Annie, Carrie and Bill on this audacious labor or love and friendship. Topic Studios financed the film and produced with Ways and Means and Crazy Galore. The film was produced by Jett Steiger, Lana Kim, Annie Clark and Carrie Brownstein. Executive producers for Topic Studios are Michael Bloom, Ryan Heller and Maria Zuckerman. Adam Pincus and Bobcat Goldthwait also serve as EPs. Co-producers are Josh Bachove and Danny Harris. Topic Studios also recently produced and co-financed The Mauritanian which received awards season love last night at the Golden Globes with a supporting actress feature win for Jodie Foster.
Brownstein is the co-creator of sketch comedy series Portlandia which ran for eight seasons on IFC and won four Emmys. Her feature credits as an actress include Carol, The Oath, and Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot as well as the TV series Transparent, Idiotsitter and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
St. Vincent’s self titled fourth solo won her a Grammy for Best Alternative Album, her first Grammy Award. She was the first solo female performer in 20 years to win a Grammy in that category. Harrison Ford: 2020 summary
A year like no other, as you must have heard countless times. The pandemic changed almost everybody´s life on this planet and Harrison wasn´t an exception. Our lil´ bean is strong and healthy but also has to be safe at home, so this year didn´t deliver many news about Harrison. Still, we had a new Harrison movie, The Call of the Wild, released in February, and a few other events before the lockdown. 2020 was also marked by the death of 3 former Harrison´s costars: Chadwick Boseman, Sean Connery and David Prowse. May all of them rest on peace on Heaven.
A new year begins, and we all wish Harrison (and everyone by the way) a productive, happy and healthy 2021. Stay safe!

29th: Harrison Ford under FAA investigation after making a mistake while operating an airplane on the runway
According to the audio obtained by TMZ, Ford, 77, did not follow the direction of a tower operator to “keep short” on the runway because of “traffic”. It seems that the actor did not hear the direction. He nevertheless started to cross the runway, which prompted the operator to reprimand him for not following his instructions.
“Cross this trail now!” I told you to keep it short! You have to listen, “said the operator.
“Excuse me, sir, I thought exactly the opposite. I’m really sorry, ”said Ford immediately.
TMZ said there was no risk of an accident. The other aircraft was allegedly 3600 feet from Ford’s aircraft.

Disney Reportedly Wants Harrison Ford For Indiana Jones Streaming Show
Thankfully, then, it seems that the fifth (Indiana Jones) outing may not be the last we see of the actor in the role, as insider Daniel Richtman claims that Disney wants Ford to appear in a series that’s being developed for their streaming service. Further details are unclear and the tipster doesn’t say if it’s an all-new show or a reboot of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, but as one of the Mouse House’s most valuable assets, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they wanted to continue mining the property once Indiana Jones 5 wraps up the big screen stories for good.
Thanks everyone! Hopefully in 2021 the pandemic will fade and the world will return to normalcy. Luckily the production of Indiana Jones V will start this spring, as well as other Harrison projects such the tv show The Staircase and the movie starring with Ed Elms. ok so i finally watched those last three episodes. i said buckle up it’s time to suffer and by the saints did i ever suffer. i just knew the darklina scenes were gonna be rough to watch. it was already rough reading the scenes as they were written in book one. i mean the darkling just shines with his intelligence in that chapter, doesn’t he? threaten the man she loves? well the other man she loves? check! tell her she betrayed you when the reality is you’ve been telling half truths all along and didn’t trust her to make her choices? check!
buddy this isn’t how you apologize. in the show itself it’s pretty much the same back and forth that leads nowhere. you lied to me! you ran off because my mother told you i’m not who i say i am without giving me a chance to explain! you’ve been lying or bending the truth since we met! YOU TURNED YOUR BACK ON YOUR COUNTRY!
by that point i was just like chill the fuck out man you’re about to decimate many many countrymen and you know it. i loved that the stop they made was all about him getting revenge on the man who attempted on alina’s life, that was very unhinged of him and i was HERE for that shit but everyone else in that port? every other woman and child and man on that port? not all of them played a hand and he just went ahead and had them slaughtered without batting an eye. and it’s not like he has some kind of safeguard for grishas does he? how does he know there’s no grisha wherever he’s expanding the fold? some could be in hiding because they fled, because they didn’t want to serve the king. oh well he doesn’t really care about those people does he? we all saw how he spoke about those deserters to arken.
also he could NOT handle alina’s harsh truths about how his own actions are harming grisha close to him even though he claims that every choice he’s made was to protect them and empower them. when she brought up genya i was like yes you better look down you motherfucker! you did this to her, you delivered to her abuser over and over.
we saw his backstory, some of it and he acted out of grief and rage. he toyed with magic he did not understand and of course he didn’t intend this but his reaction to the fold once it was all said and done was definitely foreshadowing what he was to become. i created something he said defiantly. you created something you don’t have control over. and now he’s done it again somehow, he’s got brand new creatures following him at the end.
i actually felt for young aleksander for losing the woman he loved but the arrogance and the recklessness he showed there is still the same arrogance he has now. he thinks he has thought his plan through but that’s just working off the assumption that no one opposes him ever otherwise he went ahead and put a target on grisha’s backs. he definitely put a target on alina’s back although i know that was never the plan. the fact that when he has a perfectly good remedy to the fold, a chance to actually fix his mistakes once and for all he turns its back and decides to make it ten times worse, chooses ruling via fear over hope is jusr a sign of how far he’s gone. and he didn’t waver once not even when alina was pleading with him that he could have made her his equal, that they could have stayed together and made ravka safe together if only he gave her a choice, he was still manipulative and lied to her face.
at this point i just don’t think his love for her outweighs his belief that he knows what’s best for ravka, what’s the best way to protect grisha. because he doesn’t care about anyone who isn’t grisha at all. he was persecuted like so many others. he won a war for a king centuries and that king turned on him. i’m sure he’s looking at the current one knowing that once grisha have exhausted their uses that king will turn on him too. the fold is just a different kind of war and if he wins that one for the king the darkling already knows what the outcome will be.
so to summarize this whole darkling commentary here i understand where he is coming from, i understand the fear and the rage and the desperation. it’s not working out for him though. he’s feared but he’s alone. for every ivan there’s a zoya. for every man who’s blindly loyal to him there’ll be someone rising up to oppose him eventually. and if it’s not his own people it’ll be non grisha folks. he has the second army working for him still, but he is alone. and that’s no one’s fault but his own because alina was willing to work with him.
speaking of alina i loved every second of her rising up to oppose him telling him she never needed him. she may have fallen in love with him but she never actually needed him to be powerful, she only needed to free herself of the restraints she’d put on her powers out of fear. i also thought that the way she freed herself of his control made more sense than it did in the books.
i have hope for darklina still despite all that’s happened despite how positively full of rage ans resentment she is because she still loves him, she still listened when he pleaded with her that they needed each other if they wanted to deal with the fold. of course there’s the slight issue of him lying directly and manipulating her to do his bidding and of course the fact that he took her power from her. the only thing that was her and he perverted it for his own gain. i think it just might take more than a year for her to forgive him i’m afraid. i don’t necessarily see a path to redemption right now but reconciliation? alina can be merciful, she can be forgiving. i think all it would really take is just one selfless act, one show of good faith. if he keeps pursuing her and mal and keep trying to rob her of her agency however i don’t see them ever having any kind of closure.
i don’t think i need to expand much more on my thoughts on malina. i’m not feeling what the show wants me to feel. i’m not seeing them as these soulmates that belong together. to me they’d be better of as best friends. the darkling didn’t make her strong he tried to steal her strength for his own use but mal doesn’t make her strong either, she relies too much on him. mal actually was pretty damn resourceful when left on his own. i unfortunately couldn’t say the same for alina. co-dependant love is not better than toxic love and darklina’s toxicity (most of it) comes from the lies and from the darkling repeatedly choosing for alina. he’s not brave enough to just tell her what he intends to do and let her decide whether to align herself with him so he lies and he deceives instead. not much he can do to undo it now but he could help actually destroy the fold if he wanted to. i don’t know if he’ll ever come around to it though.
the darkling visiting mal with the sole purpose to rub it in his face that alina and he are immortal and so eventually mal will die and then he could just swoop in was just peak comedy. the way he delivered that line too you’d think he was talking to an insect not another human being. it was brilliant. mal echoing that same line but ending it with “the past will do it for me” was pretty good, nice quip i’ll give mal that but also terribly ironic when you see the ending.
team crows remains the highlight for me. kaz and inej and their unspoken love for each other is just killing me. i can tell there are personal traumas there that i don’t know about (gotta read those damn books and quick) what with kaz not being able to help tend to her wounds and the fact that there were moments were i could see there was maybe a kiss about to happen or an embrace (at the end when kaz let alina go free and made a deal not to rat her out) and it just didn’t happen. there’s a story there about kaz and his distaste for being touched/touching others. jesper is just here to look pretty, shoot shit and be the most charming person in any crowd. i’m in love. also someone give him his goat back for the love of god.
nina and mathias were entertaining for sure. with all that banter and all these jabs i should have really seen them falling for one another coming. i felt like it was perhaps a bit rushed but i guess there’s nothing like almost freezing to death together to make you reconsider your views. you know the whole saving of lives thing can really bond you. the waffle date was adorable. was not expecting nina to just brand herself a traitor for him and she’s damn lucky fyedor came on that mission because i’m pretty sure ivan wouldn’t even have offered to keep her name out of the report. she and mathias ended their story both heartbroken and separated. i really hate that he thinks this was all intentional. really hope she’ll join the crows on their next con job. and i also cannot wait to see the look on heleen’s face when kaz buys inej’s freedom.
i was not at all expecting zoya to turn against the darkling. that’s what happens when you turned down one of your fuck buddies, aleksander they get bitter and then they leave you to be eaten alive by volcras. ok but in all seriousness she did the right thing and i hope she finds her family even if they’re not alive so she can say her goodbyes.
oh and completely unrelated but since i talked about heights of comedy before i really need more sassy! darkling in my life. he is everything. that quip about his speech. the way he said adorable like he was gagging on the word. him just letting david be his dorkiest self and raise his hand before speaking, that little put upon sigh. i love sassy! darkling almost as much as jealous and petty darkling which is saying a lot. just more of that. it humanizes him, i’m tired of villains who are forever stoic and stone face.
i think i about covered everyone and everything that happened in those remaining episodes. all in all shadow and bone is an amazing adaptation, really faithful to the first book. they made some changes to the characters which in turn changed some dynamics (alina actually admitted she wanted to be with the darkling. out loud. to his face. book!alina would never and book!darkling would never cry in front of her.) but it made for surprising viewing. it also made me become even more attached to some characters (the darkling let’s be real) which made me care more which is why i was livid when they started making a lot of terrible no good choices.
i was just really blown away by this show and the way the grishaverse was brought to life and above all major props to the actors who all just seemed to be born to play their respective roles.

Women’s Wrestling Entertainment: Then, Now, FOREVER
The Royal Rumble is, historically, one of the biggest nights in wrestling. Some might even go as far as to say it’s bigger than WrestleMania purely because all the chaos and unpredictability of the Rumble matches make it 30x times more fun. This year, the theme of this pay-per-view was comic book heroes and in their promotional video, a voice-over asked who would answer the call to save the world. If you watched the show, you know that the answer was, without a shadow of a doubt:
the women.
BAYLEY, THE #1 SHUFFLER
Throughout the years, we’ve heard different opinions and approaches about being the number one entrant. Some people say it’s the most unfair spot of them all and some others say that only the best person in the roster can handle that pressure because they are the foundation for the entire match. Last night, Bayley drew the short stick and yet managed to build an entire cabin. It’s not every wrestler that, at the prime of their career, sets their own aspirations aside to elevate others but that’s exactly what Bayley did. Between making legends look like they’re still a million bucks and absorbing punishment from every single current star, she kept the momentum going by shuffling the action with everyone that stepped on the ring.
A natural ring general, Bayley stayed in the match up until the point where the car could pretty much drive itself to the finish line. And while, regrettably, her elimination was only seen via instant replay due to too much action happening at the same time, she did a masterful job.
NAOMI, ABSOLUTELY GLOWING
For the past year, maybe more, Naomi has been to wrestling the same thing a solar eclipse is to the entire human race: a beautiful phenomenon that only graces our sky every once in a while but everyone stops whatever they’re doing to watch it. With Bayley being number one entrant carrying the weight of leadership in her shoulders, there was no one else that could’ve taken the second spot to help her boost this match right into hyper speed than Naomi.
Blending into the match with a level of understanding only a true veteran has, Naomi countered her Rumble course and easily became one of the iron women’s of 2021 lasting almost 50 minutes inside the ring. And while we were all waiting for her special feet-didn’t-touch-the-floor moment, we couldn’t have prepared to how it would be an ode to black girl magic with the help of Bianca Belair.
BILLIE KAY, COMEDY IS A RELIEF
Comedy is a special kind of gift that only a select few are born with. Everyone can appreciate it but not everyone can naturally make it without it seeming forced. Billie Kay is a fantastic example of someone who was born with that gift. Everything she does, even when she isn’t trying, is funny and the timing with which she delivers her lines - that end up becoming iconic - is a skill not many can master.
Last night, her role was to be our palate cleanser. When the chaos was pilling up, she would come around and lighten the mood. Be it with her facial expressions, her commentary gig for a match she should be participating or her pairing with a legend that happened to elevate both of them. She kept it fresh and added a new layer to it.
RHEA RIPLEY, WISE BEYOND HER YEARS
Seeing everything she already achieved, it’s quite shocking to many fans whenever her age is brought into the conversation but the truth of the matter is that Rhea is, in fact, the future of wrestling. She knows what to do and when to do it. She can carry a match on her back and keep the momentum going. A testament to her expertise was how she was trusted, along with Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair, to finish a stellar match with a bang.
Having some of the smartest eliminations, one being tossing Alexa Bliss out of the ring before she could let the Fiend in, Rhea demonstrated that there can be a level of respect in a match where it’s everyone to themselves. After eliminating Charlotte Flair and almost falling out of the ring at the same time as Bianca, Rhea brought the action back inside the ring so it could be settled the right way: may the best woman win.
A SYMPHONY OF STORYTELLING AND LEGENDARY RETURNS
Sometimes, because the rumble has already enough action as is, it’s very easy to forget that all the participants are involved in storylines of their own. Last night, that wasn’t the case. Everyone’s story had their moment to shine, either via elimination - like Lana finally getting her revenge on Nia by eliminating her - or via momentary teaming up - with Billie Kay telling Ruby that Jillian was now a part of her team and ending up eliminated by the Riott Squad after joining her former partner, Peyton, against Victoria -, everything had a special moment and nothing was forgotten.
Not even grudges from last year, like Rhea seeking revenge against Charlotte about her NXT title, and not even dream matches, with Mickie James puffing her chest against Charlotte because she’s been wanting to fight her for so long. Nothing was forgotten and, just as she promised she would, Bianca Belair tossed Bayley over the top rope.
On the other hand, as is Rumble tradition, we had massive legendary returns that would’ve certainly tear the roof off of the stadium should fans be in attendance. From Victoria to Jillian, without forgetting Alicia Fox that even won the 24/7 title mid Rumble, everyone performed their part perfectly and neither overstayed their welcome. It was a beautiful symphony with the perfect blend of crescendos and blasts from the past.
And last but not least, because the woman that stays for the end is the one that gets the golden ticket........
BIANCA BELAIR, THE ESSENCE AND THE EXCELLENCE
It’s one thing to say that you’re the EST of something. It’s one thing to call yourself the strongest, the fastest, the quickest, the smartest. It’s one thing to know that you’re all of those things and that you have ever skill to be even better.
But it’s another to show it.
And if there were any doubts that Bianca Belair is the sun, giving us light during these dark times, last night all of those doubts dissipated as the Iron Woman of this year’s Royal Rumble went from entering at #3 to pointing at the WrestleMania sign as the fireworks went off.
The most beautiful flowers grow in the dessert, despite having every reason not to succeed and Bianca Belair is the shinning example of that. Despite everything in her way, she thrived and pushed to be right here. Exactly where she is. Crying out her parents names and saying:
I did it.

Those West Wing photos make me long for a Veep reunion special. It’s too bad that if they do one, everyone will be separated again. Dan and Amy don’t see each other for 24 years. I want a scene where Dan sees Amy, but she doesn’t see him. But knowing Mandel, Amy would shoot him longing looks because she's forever in love with him even after the way he treated her, while he’s hitting on two young girls at the same time.
Hi Anon - thanks so much for writing in. All things considered, I think we’re comparatively lucky that the finale flashforward did not include Amy making longing looks at Dan…I’d put it more to Anna Chlumsky than David Mandel that Amy ever developed any kind of closure where Dan was concerned. Certainly the fact that she was even speaking to him is a pretty big concession, lol (and speaks to the general illogic that defines their S7 storyline). My conspiracy theory is that a pre-Trump Dan/Amy ending (the one where they actually follow through with the baby) would have consisted of Dan accidentally hitting on his own adult daughter at Selina’s funeral. Some kind of super cliché daddy joke that would also underscore Dan’s completely absence from and lack of interest in Amy's life seems like a plausible place for Mandel to take Dan. (And we know that Mandel likes jokes about incest).
I’m not sure if you saw my earlier post with thoughts about what a “special new episode” reunion might look like—there are some pretty obvious ways to get around how all the characters scattered to the winds. And Dan and Amy are the only characters where we’re given a firm clue that they have not seen one another in many years (I think? Truly the finale is such a blur to me). However, I think it’s also worth pointing out that Amy’s comment about not seeing Dan since his third wife was born is clearly a joke, a bit intended more for the audience than for Dan himself. It doesn’t make sense as something she would actually say to him. (how would Amy even know when Dan’s third wife was born?) So to me, the implied 24-year time gap is not something that would be super hard to get around if they wanted to. I absolutely do believe that the joke is supposed to communicate to the audience that Dan and Amy are not involved in each other’s lives to any degree and they have not seen each for many years. Absolutely. But also...Veep is a comedy and it’s a joke, and jokes are inherently flexible, so I doubt anyone on the creative team would be a huge stickler for the 24 years timeline. (But who knows, I could be way off).
Ialso don’t think a revival under Mandel would deliver much on the Dan/Amy front, even if they did share some scenes together. They’re not a defining element of the show for him, and both Reid Scott and Anna Chlumsky seem very invested in the S7 endings of their characters. I could see them wanting to play off one another for old time’s sake, but hardly to the degree where it’s revealed to us that Dan is suddenly more interested in Amy than he is in having sex with much younger women who fit Mandel’s idea of femininity. It’s not like we’d see Dan get into a jealous snit over Amy’s marriage to Bill Ericsson. Mandel-era Dan isn’t wired that way.
What The West Wing is doing is a staged performance of an episode from S3, and I would absolutely kill for a staged performance of a Veep episode from S1-S4. I am 100% in favor of this type of reunion special. But I doubt it’s ever going to happen, since Mandel would be in charge and would naturally want to do something from the era of the show he was responsible for. I could maybe see them doing an S1 episode with him at the helm, since he seemed to draw a lot of inspiration from that season. It seems like something the cast would love to do as well, since they speak so fondly of the active rehearsal process from the Iannucci years of the show, and their backgrounds are all in live theater/comedy anyway. It was so cool to see them act in the reunion special last Sunday, even via Zoom...watching Anna Chlumsky get her Amy face on was so delightful and interesting, I would pay *a lot* of money to watch a filmed version of a staged Veep episode.
But in truth, I suspect what we saw last Sunday is going to be the only Veep reunion special for quite some time. Once the pandemic is over (or even before it’s over…Timothy Simons has been quarantining in Canada for the past two weeks, presumably for a project), the cast is all going to have new things to work on and I think there’s simply not an appetite for a reunion yet when so little time has passed since the show went off the air.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
In 2006, Borat was one of those great cultural touchstones that transcended the big screen. There was no aspect of pop culture after its release that wasn’t in some way affected. It perfectly coincided with the rising popularity of YouTube, such that those who hadn’t seen it (or couldn’t because they were too young to get into the rated R movie) could at least see many of its famous clips. Everyone knew Borat in 2006. Everyone. You couldn’t go two fucking steps without someone going “very nice!” or “my wife!” It was such a wonderfully smart movie. It combined the best aspects of a Jackass movie, i.e. the trolling of innocent and unsuspecting bystanders, with a noble cause, to expose to the world the ignorant side of America. It was a novel and insightful look at our country.
In 2020… there is no insight in telling us that much of the country is ignorant of the truth, racist, or sexist. As Borat himself points out in this film, in the years between when he filmed the first movie (2005) and the new movie 2019-2020, America has become transfixed by their new “magical abacuses”, i.e. cellphones. Phones, the internet, social media, all of them expose us everyday to how the other half lives in their little social bubbles. We don’t have to wonder “do people really think this?” Just type whatever terrible or stupid theory you can think of into Google, and you’re guaranteed to find at least one person who endorses whatever heinous thing you just wrote. Again, this is portrayed within the film when Borat, confronted by the fact that maybe some of his core beliefs are lies, finds websites that say that (much to his anti-Semitic disappointment) the Holocaust was not real. So, one is left wondering… what can Borat bring to the table in 2020 that is fresh?
Unfortunately, the answer is… not a whole lot. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm feels mostly like a retread of 2006 with the only additions aiming more for “shock factor” than real comedy aimed to grab headlines (which it succeeded in doing). This is not to say this is not a funny movie. It is. The film’s opening where Borat describes the typical (fictionalized) Kazakh’s view of American politics is hysterical. In sum, America went to shit with the election of Obama, paving the way for other Africans to take power of the West (cue the photo of Justin Trudeau in Black face). Now with Trump in power, Borat is sent on a mission to curry Trump’s favor so that Kazakhstan and its leader will be viewed with the same favor that Trump has bestowed upon other “tough guys and tough guy countries” like Russia/Putin, the Philippines/Duerte, North Korea/Kim Jong Un, Brazil/Bolsonaro, etc. The gift is supposed to be an overly sexually aggressive chimp for Vice Pussy Hound (i.e. Vice President) Pence. However, Borat’s daughter Tutar sneaks into the crate with the chimp, and after a chain of events Borat has no choice but to gift his daughter over to Pence, and eventually Rudy Giuliani, instead.
It’s a simple enough plot but I think the movie gets a little too caught up in it. No one is asking for a plot line for this movie. If this were just a string of sketches with a vague whiff of a plot to transition between the sketches no one would fault it. In fact, that sounds like the first Borat. We are just here for the sketches. Yet the movie is looking to do a little bit more than the first movie. It’s not content to just say, “Hey, look at yourself, America! You’re fucked up! Let’s all laugh at you.” This movie has specific targets that dominate its focus: Trump and Trumpland.
This is, I think, an unfortunate choice not because I don’t approve of bashing Trump and Trumpland, but because whereas the first movie felt like comedy was king with the sociopolitical insights as a dominant undercurrent, here the story and the humiliation of Trump and his base is the end goal. This still makes for funny scenes, but when I think back to the first Borat (and as I re-watched clips of the first movie after finishing this movie), some of the greatest parts of Borat had nothing to do with politics or sensitive subjects. Much of the humor was just based around the ballsiness of Sacha Baron Cohen. This is a guy who when invited into a person’s home for dinner makes openly sexually complimentary remarks about two of the female guests, but explicitly states that the host’s wife is ugly. Never mind the fact that at that same dinner party, Borat hand-delivers his shit in a bag to a guest, claiming to not know how Western toilets work. It’s hilarious, it’s daring, and has nothing to do with politics.
In essence, the first Borat was such a success because Cohen played the character with such a believable naivete and loose grasp of English idioms, that he was a factory of malapropisms, a genius of comedic-timing, and a troll that could annoy the ever-living daylights out of anyone. There are as many scenes of him trolling nice, innocent people (like the driving instructor, the man who teaches him jokes, the group of feminists, or really any time he goes on the news) as there are scenes of him trolling people so that Cohen can make a political point or social observation (like the singing the wrong national anthem at the rodeo or his innate criticism of a Pentecostal Chruch’s weirdness). And in the end, the “point” of that plot at least had nothing to do with politics. You can watch this movie, get your laughs, remark at America’s racism, and still get your laughs.
Here, there really isn’t any scene I can think of that wasn’t done to make some sort of observation or political point. The closest I can think of are the bits towards the beginning before the plot kicks into high gear. There’s a recurring bit I love of him communication with the Premier of Kazakhstan via fax machine at a local UPS Store. The genius isn’t contained in the sentence I just wrote, but that he requires the aging worker of the UPS Store to hand-write all of his faxes for him and read any and all replies. Similarly, there’s a quick bit of genius at the beginning where Borat goes to a cellphone store and cannot understand FaceTime at all. He assumes the person on the phone must be the brother of the phone store worker he sees in front of him; they cannot be the same. Similarly he somehow enlists the help of a delivery person to re-seal the crate in which his daughter came to America in.
But otherwise, the jokes are there either to say, “Woah! Aren’t these Americans terrible?!” (whether he’s talking about QAnon’s theorists, anti-abortionists, or anti-maskers). Or there’s gross out humor, mostly about vaginas and periods, (or moon blood, as Borat calls it). As I said, these aren’t all unfunny. Probably my favorite sequence in the film sees Borat and his daughter at a pregnancy crisis center because Tutar has accidentally swallowed a little baby doll that was on top of a cupcake her father had “given” to her as a “treat” that was just supposed to be “their little secret” because women in Kazakhstan aren’t supposed to have sweets. So she ate the cupcake behind a dumpster. I’ll let you guess what happens when you enter a Christian pregnancy crisis center asking for them to take out the dumpster baby your Dad wasn’t supposed to be giving you… but it’s hilarious to see the worker sorta squirm his away around addressing the reality of incest.
But mostly, I felt kinda fatigued knowing that Cohen and co. were mostly trying to show me the “underside” of QAnon and anti-maskers… but as I said, in 2020, I am unfortunately well aware of both these groups, their psychologies, and their world. So merely highlighting that these ideas exist and that the people who endorse these ideas don’t really have a lot of great ideas otherwise, isn’t that novel as it might have been back in 2006.
Probably the more “interesting” side of the film is it’s focus on feminism. The film uses Tutar (played perfectly by previously unknown Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova and deserves all the praise she gets) to really expose how America, despite being a “feminist” nation, still shares many aspects with the fictionalized version of Kazakhastan where women are considered equivalent to livestock. The movie hopes to shed light on the far reaching effects of the patriarchy. The movie ends at the top of the pyramid with politicians who feel like it is their right to use their power to sleep with whomever they want (Trump’s obviously the true target of this criticism and I will say, the final Giuliani scene feels a little bit like entrapment… that said, I think it’s fair to say not every man would be so willing to fall into that trap). But leading up to that we see aspects of America designed to fit perfectly with the patriarchy’s demands. We hear from a shallow, vapid Instagram influencer that to get by women need to be docile and pretty, and we see a frankly horrifying discussion from a plastic surgeon talking about all the things wrong with Tutar that he would fix with surgery so that men would want her… despite the fact that she’s a beautiful woman and has nothing wrong with her! We live in a society that recognizes the horror of a patriarchical society, but still so clearly buys into it.
But in the end… you’re not watching Borat Subsequent Moviefilm to get an education on feminism and the problems with the patriarchy. That should be the extra cherry on top of a main course of hearty laughter. In focuses on the politics, Cohen and co. find plenty of laughs and memorable moments, but fail (perhaps inevitably) to recreate the signature naivete and bumbling oafishness of his titular interviewer, in the process losing some of the film’s humor and paradoxically its ability to leave a lasting message.

XO / The Host / Initiation - The Weeknd: First of all Trilogy is a masterpiece. The Weeknd is a legend forever for this alone. Back when he was an anonymous character and before he tried to pivot to being a proper pop star and started beliving his own bullshit. This trio of songs for me is one of the highlights of the whole thing because this is where things really take a turn and it serves as a nice flipside to earlier songs like Glass Table Girls (even quoting some of the lyrics from it in a very cool reprise). Where most of the songs from House Of Balloons are about his own descent into this hedonistic life, by the time you get to Echoes Of Silence he lives there comfortably, and he's turned from cool, dark and tormented to coldly evil and calculating. He's the master of the dark palace and he's drawing this woman in. The chorus of XO is straight up cult language 'all we ever do is love, open up your mind you can find the love'. She's broke and addicted trying to escape her life and he offers her this community. Which is where Initation comes in and things get really dark. This song feels like the real truth of those stories you hear of Drake flying instagram models around and it's a masterpiece of the dark underside of the drugs money and models bragging you're used to.
Sociopath (feat. Kash Doll) - Pusha T: Get a load of this new Pusha song where he's got Rodney Dangerfield ghostwriting for him. I got a bitch that'll master your card.. my wife ova hea!! Also the funny gritted teeth way he says it cracks me up. He also says boop bop be boop bop. There's so many good moments in this very silly song from a man that is normally terrifyingly serious.
Ice Cream - Muscles: I suddenly remembered this song the other day and I'm so glad I did. A good example of how you can get so much feeling out of music that has no relation at all to the lyrics. In the right mood this song makes me so emotional and I can't even pin down why. The way he sings 'ice cream is going to save the day' somehow just makes the urban alienation of the verse even more pointed. It's such a silly little dance song and that's what's so strong about it. It's dancing at night and unsuccessfully trying to forget what happened today.
Running - Gil Scott Heron & Jamie xx: It’s extremely strange that this remix album ever happened, thinking back on it. Stranger still that a Gil Scott Heron song got remixed by Jamie xx and then remixed again by 40 and turned into a Drake song in I’ll Take Care Of U and all three versions rock. Anyway, this song and this whole album remain fantastic - it still sounds futuristic in a way where nobody else really followed Jamie’s sound, everything else went a different direction so this an In Colour feel more and more unique to me as time goes on.
Boyfriend (Repeat) - Confidence Man: I’m in love with this album. It’s the closest I’ve found so far to the level of absolute fun in dance music since Duck Sauce’s album. I love the the attitude of her lyrics, which carries through the whole album. I love when her Australian accent peeks out for a second on a few words. I love his rebuttals that almost but not quite put it over the edge into a comedy song. I love the big fading out leadup to the drop near the end where a huge throat singing drone just swallows the whole song for a second.
Ever Again (Soulwax Remix) - Robyn: Extremely hot remix alert!! Thankyou to Zan Rowe's Monthly Mixtape playlist for putting my onto this.Sometimes all you need is one ferociously hot bassline to make a life complete.
$50 Million - !!!: !!!’s new album has one of the best covers I’ve seen recently, I advise you to check it out. It’s interesting to be so far into your career (this is their 8th album since 2001) and still be writing songs about selling out, a concept which has largely disappeared from music discourse since musicians started making no money post napster. I vaguely remember the turning point being when Kimya Dawson, after blowing up via the Juno soundtrack, turned down a coke ad for a ludicrous amount and the blogosphere at the time turned on her and said she should have taken the money because she was living in a van at the time. Nobody gives a fuck about selling out anymore because bands make more from tshirts than streams so you’ve got to act like a brand just to make a living. Anyway I’ve gotten off track. This song rocks, especially for the breakdown near the end.
Tipped Hat - The Paper Scissors: A song I haven’t heard in over ten years that suddenly popped into my head the other day. I love the way this guy’s voice sounds, just completely committing to sounding like a hand puppet. I’ve been playing bass a lot more recently and so have developed the worst man habit of becoming more sensitive to and pointing out extremely hot basslines to people, so I’d be derelict in my duty to not share this one.
Heimsdalgate Like A Promethian Curse - of Montreal: I love this song about literally pleading with your brain to come good. Here’s a good quote about this album “I went through this chemical depression, and that's when I was writing a lot of the songs for Hissing Fauna. They're all songs about that experience. And I was experiencing it in the moment that I was writing the songs, and sort of asking myself: What the hell is going on? Why are you all of a sudden totally paranoid and plagued by these anxieties? And why is everything so distorted and confusing and fucked up? My lifestyle hadn't changed that much. And then I realized, well, there's something going on inside of me that I don't have control over, and then you realize how vulnerable you are to these things, these elements that you can't understand, or unless you go on medication and get it under control. It's like you're being betrayed by your body.” Something I really admire about this album is that the lyrics reflect black metal levels of mental anguish, he was absolutely going through it the worst anyone can go through it “I'd gotten to that point where nothing was working. I was borderline suicidal, and my relationship with my girlfriend had totally eroded and she'd gone back to Norway with our daughter and everything was totally fucked, and I was just like, What can I do? "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal" is about that.” But the music is one hundred percent committedly twee and I really admire the effect that that split mood gives. “The lyrics tell the story of what was really going on and the music sort of represents this other emotion that I wish existed. The music was really happy because I wanted to make something that would lift my spirits.”
Jesus Rabbit - Guerilla Toss: I love the wobbly weird bass sound in this weirdo UFO cult song. I love the bleepy bloop melody that runs through it and I love how fundamentally unstable the whole song sounds, like it’s made out of paperclips and foil and papier mache.
Suburbia - Press Club: I can’t believe I didn’t know about Press Club for so long. I only found out about them this performance https://youtu.be/bCmtc-T5Unk which I’m shocked to learn has less than 5k views considering it’s one of the very best TV performances I’ve ever seen.
Come For Me - Sunflower Bean: I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about this song before and I’m probably going to say the exact same thing but who cares! This song fuckin rocks. I love how assured it is, like “if you’re gonna fuck me then stop fucking around and fuck me already.” It also feels so musically similar to I Can Hardly Make You Mine by Cults to me, which is a great excuse for me to listen to that song every single time I listen to this song.
Thousands - Club Night: This Club Night album is really really good. It's like a really nice middleground between midwest emo and Cymbals Eat Guitars. The way this song blows up halfway through with 'what if we want it!!' is so good. This whole band feels like they're from 2009 but in a good way, the tail end of indie and twee with these prog or postrock structures where the songs just go and go, and you can just get completely lost in it.
Cemetary - Brutus: The first thing you've got to know about Brutus is the drummer is also the singer. Normally who plays what is not really important but in this case I think it's very important because it makes the drums a lead instrument more than they normally would be. When she's not singing my focus is still on the drums because they're linked and I absolutely love it. This song is great and every song I've heard of theirs is just as good, I love Brutus and they're one of the best new bands I've found recently. Someone in the youtube comments said 'there's something really special about hearing a song for the first time and just knowing you're going to listen to it hundreds of times in your life.'
Enter By The Narrow Gates / Spirit Narrative - Circle Takes The Square: I think that I think of Circle Takes The Square as a household name just because they have such an outsized importance in my own life when they're definitely not at all. They're legendary for making The screamo (good kind) album in As The Roots Undo and then taking 8 years to make a followup, which is this album Decompositions, but I don't really know if they're well known outside of like, people who have opinions about what were the hottest music blogspots in 2010. I chose both of these because you can't really have one without the other, the whole album basically runs as one long piece of music and so this just kind of jarringly ends at the end of Spirit Narrative, sorry about that please listen to the entire album. Because of the status As The Roots Undo enjoys I feel like this album was kind of ignored, or overshadowed by the reputation it was trying to live up to, almost exactly like The Avalanches with Since I Left You and Wildflower, when just like Wildflower it's a more expansive, developed take on the original sound that trades some of the rawness for a more polished and considered approach and comes out arguably better than the orginal. I feel like I have so much to say about this album but I don't really know where to begin, just listen to it.
Vitrification Of Blood (Pt. 1) - Blood Incantation: I am by no means a metal scholar, but I know that when the word 'blood' is in both the song title AND the band name that means it's good metal. I love this song, and this whole album is great. It's very 'classic' death metal but there's touches (beyond the extreme length) of psychedelica as well that puts it on another level you can just get lost in. The way the guitar goes to space at 3:40, and again properly into orbit at 6:50 is just magical. The more I listen to this band the more I understand those guys who only listen to metal, there's a whole ecosystem in here and it's really got everything you need.
Out Of Line - Gesaffelstein: This whole song is basically intended as an intro for Pursuit on the album but it’s so powerful just on its own. I love imbuing weirdo lyrics like ‘a bitter sunken love in a bleach blonde submarine’ with such ominous power through the commanding delivery. I love the way the big grunting vocals on the offbeat build to sound like a summoning ritual. I love making a big processed bell the centrepiece of your extremely evil sounding song. It’s sort of a shame that Gessaffelstein has never really gone back to the vision of his first album and has spent his time since diluting it down for guest production on Weeknd songs and the like because it feels like there’s still so much more to get out of this sound. That he hasn’t gone back and dug deeper makes Aleph stand out more and more as a singular masterpiece as time goes on.
Kamane Tarhanin - Mdou Moctar: Turning to Mdou Moctar after the new Tinariwen album kind of disappointed me, with all it’s big name guests nothing really hit me. I love this song though and I think a big part of it is the sort of loping, 6/4 rhythm that combined with the drone gives it this feeling of endlessly tumbling over itself in place, especially as the guitar heats up.
Achabiba - Fatou Seidi Ghali: I know very little about Fatou Seidi Ghali except that I saw she was supporting Sarah Louise at a show. From some googling it turns out that she’s the leader of a Nigerois band called Les Filles de Illeghadad who you can probably look forward to seeing on next month’s playlist. I also learned that the demonym for someone from Niger is Nigerien or to minimise confusion with Nigeria, Nigerois (said in a french way). They play a sort of desert psych in the realm of Mdou Mocter or Tinariwen, but this song (also the only solo song she has on spotify) shows her acoustic side. I love the swirling melody over the drone as the hand percussion keeps it in place and I love the very delicate vocals, but a probably unintentional thing I love a lot about this recording is the unmistakable iphone locking sound near the very start that instantly removes so much of the mystic exoticism that these sorts of artists are often written about with and places it firmly in the same sprawling modern world we all live in.
Floating Rhododendron - Sarah Louise: I love Sarah Louise. She’s a phenomenal guitarist and has such a big love for traditional folk music with her side project House And Land, but unlike everyone else in the genre is also very interested in pushing guitar forward to new and strange places. Her latest album was super experimental layered electric guitars and voice that still managed to maintain the deep connection to nature that runs through all her work. I would also highly recommend following her on instagram because her passion runs over. She’s regularly just out in the woods somewhere explaining how wonderful a particular mushroom is. This song one of the first ones I ever heard from her, and it’s back when she was just doing very beautiful 12 string acoustic work, but she recently added it to spotify and it’s a very nice reminder of where she came from and how far she’s gone in such a short time.
Lark - Angel Olsen: The new Angel Olsen is absolutely great. I love how much she is just completely going for it on this album, absolutely unleashing. Taken against earlier songs of hers I’ve loved like White Fire, where the majesty was in her quiet power and the ability to absolutely command silence with a whisper quiet song, this song feels like the direct inverse, an about-turn into all the gigantic majesty of swirling strings and top of your lungs vocals - going all out and leaving nothing on the table. The way this song blows up about three different times until by the end you’re caught in this gigantic swirling maelstrom of screaming sound is just out of this world.
Door - Caroline Polachek: Caroline Polachek’s brain is huge. When I first heard the chorus of this song I couldn't believe it. Are you allowed to have a chant that runs in a spiral like this be the chorus of your pop song? Is that allowed?
North, South, East And West - The Church: The Church feel like they don't get enough respect. They don't seem to be in the same league as Cold Chisel and The Angels and all the other dad rock Australian bands from that era for some reason. They're very good though and I've been really getting into this whole album and this song specifically lately. Maybe what's working against them is just how much his voice sounds like Bono's in this song but surely that was a boon at the time!
Western Questions - Timber Timbre: This has become one of my new favourite songs to sing. The way the words fit together is my favourite kind of poetics where they just sound incredible, phonetically, and can mean anything you like for large chunks. Like “the gelatinous walls of the seeds that seldom remain / while the bulls are browsing needles through computer casinos / honour the name”. Especially “bulls are browsing needles through computer casinos” is just extremely nice to say. I love the character of this song and am yet to completely understand what it’s saying other than personifying some worldwide blackpilled spirit of nihilist evil. What I love is the experience of all encompassing evil in this song, like a worldwide conspiracy connecting everything together that makes it all make sense. It doesn’t make you happier but it makes it make sense. I also love the finality of the big fill near the end that ushers in the outro riff that ties everything up.
Cold Cold World - Blaze Foley: I got heavily into a country music thing this month and spent a bit of time trying to find ‘real’ country, which of course turns out not to exist at all. The entirety of country music is built on a false nostalgia for an imagined time long past when things were real, some unspecified time in the collective consciousness between cowboy times and coal mine times. I don’t say this to say ‘country music is a fraud’ but that it’s built on a foundation of myth and that’s what’s so good about it. It’s constantly reframing the past as it relates to the present and is energised by the friction between them. Blaze Foley is a good example of this in the modern era because he seems to exist more as a myth than a man. He had three studio albums, the master tapes of which all disappeared through various means (lost, stolen, seized by the DEA) and so the majority of his surviving material is live recordings or long-lost studio recordings that resurfaced decades after his death when his fame and mythology already preceded him. He also thankfully lives up to the myth, he was truly a great artist and it’s a shame more of him hasn’t survived.
Where The Golden Wattle Blooms / Why Did The Blue Skies Turn Grey - Shirley Thoms: Further to what I was saying about country music before, Australian country is a whole other thing. Transferring the myth and the mythmaking to a new location adds another layer of abstraction. Shirley Thoms was the first female solo act to record country music in Australia in 1941 and was most notable for her yodelling of which she is damn fine. This is a great song and a good a starting point as any in trying to trace the origin of country music in Australia. That it's so english in its identity, so evidently imitating an american style (which is in turn imitating a german yodel) is just more good evidence that nothing is 'real' and traditions of the past and future are malleable at all times.
Talkin’ Karate Blues - Townes Van Zandt: Townes Van Zandt is widely regarded as a songwriter’s songwriter and one of the best country songwriters to ever live, but like a lot of great country songwriters also has one or two songs like this - strange comedy songs about learning karate and getting your arm ripped off.
Strange Tourist - Gareth Liddiard: This album is a masterpiece on the level of Ys and it feels criminally underlistened in my opinion. Luckily in the last week or so some renegade has done up the wiki article on it to a couple of thousand words so that's a start. Because this is a song I've listened to one million times and love a lot, it's hard for me to write about it in a general way so instead I'm going to talk about something very specific and new that I've only begun to appreciate recently. The way he uses the vowels of the japanese words to create these assonant runs in lines like "Koda Kumi sang a coda pink as sarin gas / I took a trip to Nagasaki in a rented Mitsubishi / Then went camping in the Jukai under Mount Fuji" and "They found him frozen in a hollow in Aokigahara forest where them harakiri weirdos go" is really something, and a nice illustration of the two sides of Liddiard's songwriting: densely technical poetics in a song about living with a housemate who was a real freak.
I Dream A Highway - GIllian Welch: I’m not even going to go into the lyrics of this because it’s such an out of this world perfect song but I’m going to say this: it’s really something that this song goes for nearly 15 minutes, sits on the same three chords the whole time and never ever feels long. This song is longer than Emily by Joanna Newsom but doesn’t feel like an epic of the same scale at all. It’s just a mournful slow ode to change and decay that goes on forever and could keeping going on for twice as long if it wanted to.
Deep Water - The Middle East: The way the vocals in the verses are delivered, trailing off and mumbling bits and pieces is somehow magical, like it’s more interested in communicating the gist and the feeling than the actual words. You can just pick whatever part of it you like. Petrol stations and a copper mine, the kind of place I think I could die. This song also has two minutes of silence at the end for album reasons so enjoy that.
