Made In Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul takeaway

Y’know, I thought I wouldn’t care about Prushka. I’d been spoiled about the Cartridges, she was dead-girl-walking, and through all the scenes of her befriending the main trio and her backstory and flashbacks and aspirations to travel with the trio I could only see it as set-up for the horror that was coming. It’s a well-structured emotional gut-punch that I could only nod along to.

But then that whistle came out of the cartridge. Perfection. You got me, movie. I can still cry.

Made in Abyss is good, don’t watch it

Made in Abyss - Dawn of the Deep Soul Thoughts (Spoilers, duh)

You know, I really wonder about people's taste in media sometimes. First it was Strictly Come Dancing, then Love Island, and now this. I have been meaning to catch up on Made in Abyss for some time now, I probably watched S1 back in 2018 and I'd heard great things about this film when it came out.

Unfortunately, I simply do not get it. It's at 8.6 stars on MAL, which bemuses me as the whole film is objectively worse than S1, I really thought that people would be annoyed at how wasteful this whole film is with its time usage and characters.

Bondrewed could have been such an amazing antagonist, if he was given either less time or more time onscreen, which is a strange thing to write out but I digress. He was in the uncanny valley of character development, on the one hand everything was rushed and I had to go to the wiki to really understand what he was on about, and on the other he felt like he was this grand final boss of an arc... despite only having like 5 mins of screen time in S1 and only being brought up as a player towards the end of the season.

Prushka was also taken too seriously by the plot for some random girl who shows up and is brutally dismembered like 3/4 of the way into the story. I really wish she could have been part of the group, although given the mangaka's generally disgusting depictions of children it is likely for the best.

Nothing really had any weight to it, and I'm not 100% sure why. It's something I've noticed with other anime flicks, there's an awful lot of content but it lacks weight. It's disappointing how the writers make the same sort of mistakes over and over again. It's not impossible to make a feature-film of a story that is split into separate parts, Harry Potter did it well enough and The Hobbit trilogy had its problems but each film felt separate (although I can't really remember the last one).

Last minor thing, (I'm watching dubbed if that makes any difference) but it really irks me that Reg is explicitly stated that he gets turned on by Nanachi's fur. I thought Nanachi just liked their personal space, which I could really respect, but no the mangaka just wants to see children fucking I guess. What a cunt, I say.
