Made in Abyss is great if you like extensive worldbuilding, adventure, trauma, fantasy, horror, mystery, and more horror.
If HP Lovecraft and Jules Verne had a baby and that baby could only draw cute characters, then you'd get Made in Abyss. To summarize, a 12-year-old girl named Riko wants to meet her long-lost mother who resides at the bottom of the Abyss, a giant chasm in the earth. Being a squishy little human, Riko is subject to lots of injuries and physical trauma cuz "reality ensues." No matter how plucky and optimistic a child is, throwing them into a pit full of wild animals is not a good idea. The Abyss itself defies space, physics, and time. Imagine the Burj Khalifa times 3 sunk into the earth. Now imagine if that superstructure was split into 7 stories or "layers" and each layer has its own ecosystem and weather patterns. Now imagine if that superstructure was a giant trap with downward-facing teeth so the further you went in, the more painful it becomes to get out. Now imagine if that giant trap was sentient on some level and gives you an irresistible urge to literally get to the bottom of it not caring if you can never return to the surface.

A Disney Deep in the Abyss:
Amphibia/TOH X Made in Abyss AU
(I apologize in advance for the cruelty some of these choices)
Reference if you don’t get the titles/character roles, that being said it doesn’t have to follow the anime’s plot. There’s enough room for all our favorite characters to have their own in the Abyss.
I made Marcy Wu my player character in the game Made in Abyss: Binary Stars Falling into Darkness.
(To the best of my ability, the character creator was quite limited so forgive me if some details are off, this was as close as I could get)
I die a lot in this game, be forewarned this is an M rated game.
For those of you unfamiliar with the anime, here’s some context.

The nature of the Abyss in "Made in Abyss" (Intro to the setting)
There's 7 confirmed layers and each layer has a "curse" or an effect on the human body; the curse only kicks in when you try to ascend. The first 3 layers are pretty okay: dizziness, nausea,(Layer 1) numbness of limbs and stronger nausea(Layer 2) & visual + auditorial hallucinations(Layer 3). The 4th layer is when things get serious: you bleed from every hole in your body and feel intense pain. Layer 5 gives you sensory deprivation and a strong urge to self-harm. Best case scenario: you tear your hair out and lose some fingernails before coming to your senses. Worst case scenario: You peel your skin off, pluck your eyes out, or something like that. Layer 6 will mutate you if you try to ascend from it. There is no best or worst scenario here; either you mutate into a pile of flesh and die, or you mutate into a pile of flesh but you live, forgetting that you used to be human and just crawling around as a mindless thing. Because of the difficulties of ascending, Layers 1-4 are well-documented and there's tons of info on them, while info on Layer 5 is spotty, Layer 6 is sparse, and Layer 7 is a step above a myth. Since ascending from Layer 6 can kill you, cave raiders send up hot air balloons and the risk of said balloons being destroyed goes up the deeper you go. For all we know, there's 10 more Layers but info about them never finds its way to the surface. You'd think if the Abyss itself is trying to harm you, there wouldn't be many people diving into it, but each layer has Relics in it, or special artifacts with unique abilities and the deeper you go, the more rare and expensive Relics become. The smart thing to do is just gather Relics from the first 3 layers, go back to the surface, and live like a millionaire, but the Abyss itself drives people to go deeper into it, so deep that they can't return to the surface and are deemed dead for all extents and purposes. The Abyss is the centerpiece of the local surface religion and is treated as a deity, so all the lives it claims are just treated as facts of life instead of tragedies. "The Abyss giveth and taketh away." The Abyss has no mouth but it consumes, no eyes but it sees, no ears but it answers prayers, no human mind yet it understands love and longing. This is why "Lovecraftian" is often used to describe the series. Not to mention that the abilities and appearances of the Relics are more like alien technology than something that could be made by human hands.
