Artist Research -David Ambarzumjan
Tumblr media
Ambarzumjan's painting "Recover" is the final entry in the artists collection "Brushstrokes in Time". The painting depicts a city on a rainy night, the lights in the windows of soaring skyscrapers, to the neon signs of the buildings below. Over this painting however, Ambarzumjan casts a broad gash through the painting, showing a far brighter future, lush with greenery and wildlife. What strikes me about this work is the contrast between the two, the dull glow of modern life juxtaposed with the bright fresh air of the future.

Moving Through Time Project : Finished Time Travel Portal Painting (22/01/23)
This is my finished Painting. It is of Bunratty Castle (1425).
Tumblr media
This is the painting with the time travel portal showing the 18th century thatched house peeking through the portal. I hope that this will be used as a background for my stop motion next week. The collage aspect was inspired by Walton Ford, John Stezaker, and David Ambarzumjan.
Tumblr media
The painting of Bunratty Castle is acrylic on canvas and the cottage painting is acyrlic on canvas paper attached to the main painting with tape so that I can attach and detach it from the main painting in the stop motion animation as the time travel portal appears and disappears.

Paintstrokes Through Time
This brilliant yet somber series by David Ambarzumjan shows various landscapes that are radically altered by large paint strokes, in which we see both the past and the present revealed. It’s a fascinating concept, executed solidly, giving us a window to a different time. In the first, we see a virgin green landscape, radically altered in the paint stroke, revealing Manhattan. The series is…

David Ambarzumjan’s “Brushstrokes in Time” at Beinart Gallery.
Currently on view at Beinart Gallery in Brunswick, Australia is artist David Ambarzumjan’s solo exhibition “Brushstrokes in Time.”
With these new works, Ambarzumjan wanted to turn his focus away from urban scenes and towards natural landscapes, while still highlighting our influence on them, whether in the past, present or future. As with previous works in the series, he wanted to emphasise how diverse and unpredictable life is and how we can find parallels in the wildest differences.
Ambarzumjan was also excited to experiment more with whimsical elements and surreal compositions with bigger and bolder, textural brush strokes, conveying a sense of movement in the work. To make these contrasting scenes coexist in one single composition, he tried to find similarities between them, bridges that would connect light and darkness, life and death, warmth and coldness, creating a space where extremes can meet and intersect without the control of time.

David Ambarzumjan’s large strokes across scenes reveal either what once existed or what will come to pass in landscapes through time. See more of his paintings here.
