DATS Rant: The Ultimate Spider-Man Is a Masterpiece

Hot take: The Ultimate Spider-Man is the most thematically cohesive Spider-Man show I’ve seen.

All the Youtubers who rag on this show always point to individual scenes and lines as dumb and claim that the show has bad writing because of them. Frankly, I’ve found myself despising the writing on several shows that have a lot of good scenes the fandom goes wild over because the show’s theming is broken or outright missing. coughMiraculouscough

The thing about theming is that it can really work to enforce what your story is about. If your themes don’t work, vanish or aren’t even a consideration, your story is thin. Many current stories struggle with theming, by which I mean things seem to happen without reason. I’m not talking about just kids’ media either, adult shows also seem to have events strung together more just to be shocking instead of in order to say something.

It’s actually pretty easy to do a show-wide theme like family, friendship, the horrors of war or how broken people often have broken relationships. You just need to bring it up every now and again. The problem seems to be story arcs with themes. This is because having a theme in a story means building events up to a certain conclusion that supports said theme. It means predictability and there seems to be a weird allergy for that going on.

The theming in The Ultimate Spider-Man is actually very visible in its handling of the Venom arc. Youtubers with no concept of theming don’t understand why Harry Osborn becomes Venom. Here’s the thing: Harry’s relationships with both Peter and his dad begin deteriorating as soon as Spider-Man shows up. It’s also without him knowing it, in the case of Peter. “Venom” means “poison”. Spider-Man poisons Harry’s relationships with his dad and Peter. It’s poetic.

This is why it’s important that Peter starts off disliking his new teammates. They’re often literally getting between him and Harry, just like Peter’s duty as Spider-Man is figuratively between them, pushing them apart.

This is also why Harry becomes Anti-Venom as part of the arc that leads up to Peter revealing his secret identity to Harry. “Anti-Venom” is basically another word for a counter-poison. Their relationship is being healed, the poison is being countered. Fittingly, the story where Harry becomes Anti-Venom is also the one where Norman Osborn gets redeemed.

Harry becomes the Anti-Spider-Man, then he becomes Venom, then he becomes Anti-Venom and then he becomes Harry again. That’s an arc, those are themes. This show is good.

of course he is. they met at the age of 12/13 ish and have been friends for two decades. they've been friends for almost as long as they've been in the sport. they were friends in their very formative years. although the sport brought them together, it doesn't mean it was just the sport alone that held them together.

they were kids too. they were competitive in everything. from racing to see who finishes pizzas first to making promises under the grecian skies of being in formula one together. lewis went from watching nico's debut monaco gp in 2006, to actually getting their shared podium in 2008, the famous cool down room hug and the sheer content in their eyes.

nico rosberg fundamentally shaped lewis hamilton and vice versa. it's undeniable no matter how many times lewis refuses to say his name but leaves presents for nico's daughter. no matter how many times lewis physically dodges out nico and sneaks away , he'll always know about nico's retirement because nico had texted him about it upon which they had a little chat about.

so of course nico knows lewis. how lewis is as a person, as a driver and a world champion. so he knows the exact corners where he loses time, his racing style, what he's comfortable with, and how he's literally the ❛ greatest of all time . . . ❜

so he's entitled to criticize and praise lewis however he wishes because he knows him. he knows lewis both objectively and subjectively. the reason why nico's opinion weighs in heavier is because of their shared history that was beyond the sport. he will always be his best friend irrespective of the potentially irreparable damage, their history runs deep and is etched into their hearts forever.

so if he wants to run a fucking show about everything lewis, he's entitled to do so, without any criticism from anyone..😐

speaking of not having a room in my life ever... don't think it's ever talked abt how much of a deeply traumatic n dehumanising experience that is & i mean that wholeheartedly

everyone our age i know to this day who we grew up with has one, grown up with one since early childhood, had choice in what to surround themselves with in their own space and could have privacy when needed

i sleep in a single bed in a corner, that's all i have. we've always shared a room with 1-3 ppl and it was never a bearable experience growing up, but once you reach your early teens i feel like it just starts being traumatising regardless of environment. i know most of the time it's not anyone's intent to deprive children of personal space, it is most often the result of poverty & inability to give them that but i'm fully convinced you should not be having a child if you can't give them that

maybe my own experience is saturated by other household trauma that this lack of personal space opened us up to but as a whole, i think it's abuse to deny a growing human being their fully own space, as small as it could possibly be, any space at all ... i can't really explain why it's such an important part of growing up but not only do i still feel alienated based on that alone, i also don't feel like i have any right to privacy at all, no place i can just be and do what i want without being watched, judged, commented on or demanded a change (i can't turn the light on/off or close/open the door or windows without input! i can't keep the door closed at all actually bc she will come and open it and ask why i need it closed!)

anyway i just feel like it contributed to our trauma insurmountably and affected our mental health to this day. it feels like yet another puzzle piece in 'normal human development' missing that i will never be able to fill in?

i wonder if there r any studies done on this or any professional opinion on depriving children of personal space & privacy. reading other people's experiences online unanimously seems to imply it immensely fucked up our senses of self n complicated being in touch with our needs

so conclusion i guess. if ya plan on ever having N amount of children PLEASE think realistically if yr able 2 provide em an environment that allows em 2 have all of their needs fulfilled... n that absolutely includes the right to privacy

nah, with all due respect, ferran’s a bum. i like him as a person and i appreciate his relationship with pedri, but there’s no way he should be playing for barça. he makes for an alright sub, the problem with that is he was bought for €55M and there was never a time before or after that he was ever worth that money. not to mention that according to capology.com he has gross base salary of €10M, which means he earns around €192,308 per week, not including bonuses. to put that into perspective, he has a high gross base salary and earns more per week than both pedri and gavi who are both far more important players to barça than ferran will ever be. he’s such an incredibly mid player to be taking up that much space in barça’s salary cap. and don’t even get me started on that whole “shark” gimmick, he did well in the beginning of the season but he’s totally stagnated since. not to mention he has no ambition, he doesn’t want to leave barça to go to a club where he’d actually be a starter and is more than happy to remain a bench player. i don’t know, i genuinely don’t know how he’s fooled people into thinking he’s a different player than the one he was last season. i don’t hate him despite my long-winded rant saying otherwise, i don’t dislike him as a person but i certainly dislike him as a player.

I totally get some of your opinions, believe me. I too think he is pretty mid as a player, however i disagree to some points, like the opinion that he has no ambition. One never knows how much work a player may or may not put into training to become a better player. So, on that front, neither you or i can argue, although i’d say that, from an outsider perspective, he has been trying to get better, even more physically. That can be proven by his own team ferran updates. To what extent? i don’t know.

The salary discussion is something that everyone and their mommas have talked about many, many times. When he joined, i also thought the money could’ve been spent differently, and would’ve been happy to sign if it was for much less, although we are in a really bad economical stance to flunk on signings and need to actually sign close to elite players.

BUT we also this thing at barca in which people expect every damn forward to score 50 goals in one go, and if a player does not deliver that, they are criticized. Have we forgotten them games we won because of ferran? especially bc lewa was not there. And when lewa returned, he was absolutely ass, and xavi would not sub him FOR SHIT. we forget a lot of things a player may have delivered to us because they cannot deliver on a constant basis (especially when they have almost no minutes) and i believe that that is so ungrateful, and a characteristic barca fans have to the core.

Ferran has definitely done some good to the team but the thing is he has not added a lot as people might expect, again, especially due do our economical status. He has improved though, from the past, and i believe he can improve more but he is not getting any fucking minutes right now, especially since xavi sucks lewan’s cock up and down every damn game. Not even vitor roque is given minutes ffs. How do we expect him to deliver?

Anyways. we can let ferran go, whatever, let’s overly expect from another player who comes in. The thing is, who is coming? huh? who tf is coming to replace ferran for a cheap fee? fucking bernardo silva and his goddamn 50M? in this economy?

sighs. yall can hate on ferran as a player as much as yall would like because he has been put on high as fuck expectations, but don’t speak on his motivation, especially after literally reading he was mad he did not get to (1) play more minutes and (2) kick that free kick. I think that’s enough to know he cares about a spot on the team.

now, if a really good offer comes and we find a way better player that is NOT OVERHYPED or OVERRATED, then so be it! i will gladly take them because the betterment of my team is what i seek right now

Ik snap werkelijk niet waarom iedereen zo boos is dat de rente op studieleningen omhoog gaat. "Ze hebben ons niet goed voorgelicht" "Je kan niet zomaar de voorwaarden veranderen."

Ehmm, het was letterlijk altijd duidelijk (voor mij nochthans) dat de rente altijd omhoog kon en dat 0% rente een hele uitzonderlijke situatie was (niemand opgelet toen de rente van de ECB negatief werd? Dat was een flinke shock voor economen). Daarom hebben veel mensen ook NIET maximaal geleend, want als iedereen dacht dat de rente altijd 0% zou blijven zou het gewoon gratis geld zijn, dat je op een bankrekening kon zetten voor noodgevallen en als die zich niet voordeden zou je gewoon alles in 1 keer kunnen terugbetalen. Als iedereen er van uitging dat de rente 0% zou blijven zou het dom zijn om niet maximaal te lenen. De reden dat mensen dus niet maximaal hebben geleend is omdat het WEL DUIDELIJK WAS.

Dus ja, wees vooral boos op het leenstelsel als geheel, wees boos over de verschillende percentages voor verschillende studenten (vooral MBO'ers, maar ook het oude leenstelsel krijgen hogere percentages) maar om nu te gaan huilen dat de rente omhoog gaat, terwijl dat te verwachten viel is gewoon triest.

You know, our lifestyles are so transactional I’m not very surprised that our behavioral patterns tend to be as well, but I’m starting to feel like the general stress we live in in addition to that pushes so many people to this all or nothing mentality in relationships. Your expectations of others can become so specific and trivial when you are looking for the people around you to be your fix to the inherent tension of existence or society. And it becomes downright unrealistic when you factor in how we are all living with these different variables of stress and pain. Can you actually think about the gravity of wanting a person to be your peace? In this economy lol. I think about how that affects community formation, strength and solidity. What I constantly see is people feeling taken from, drained, like they’re constantly pouring out of cup that rarely gets filled. We live in a society where that is the standard of how we exist in order to literally survive, and it’s very easy to project those feelings onto other areas of your life and continue these cycles of denying each other true patience and acceptance because we feel it hasn’t been correctly granted to us. We are constantly forced to accept and be patient with conditions and factors of life and society that do not fulfill us so we struggle to truly embrace one another because we are already tired of doing that. We easily dump each other in more than just romantic relationships, because our spirits are perpetually in-valued and we also expect interpersonal relationships to inherently overcompensate for that. When they do not, we don’t always have the forbearance to deal with the additional frustration that comes with disappointment. Narcissism, to me, is a reactionary response to life and even more so a method of survival. Sometimes feeling you’re just too good for everyone and everything or that you’re never wrong is easier to face than the reality of feeling small and constantly upset. Its even logical to me that people inflate their efforts, impact and importance when if the reality is that they are an averagely flawed friend, lover, parent or teacher they may genuinely crumble into feeling even less of themselves than the world already feels like it’s trying to make them. It’s okay if you aren’t the most graceful, patient and flexible when in so many ways you can be so emotionally, physically or mentally stretched thin that you’ve become fragile and highly reactive to trivial things. Thing is though, I don’t know if there’s many other ways to alleviate that than community and community never works when we are all coping with main character syndrome. You know? Not everyone is this raging narcissist but a lot of us are somewhere on a spectrum. Yet, empathy is really the key to this ideal collective consciousness and healing that would give us true acknowledgment and peace
