i love when characters that are always the one protecting others, staying strong for them, putting others first- get to be taken care of. get to fall apart, get to be soft and vulnerable, get to be protected and loved just as fiercely as they protect and love the people they care about

Dick Grayson, Golden Boy
It pissed Dick off when Jason called him “Golden Boy,” but he understood why he said it.
Dick Grayson had been the first- the first son, the first Robin, the first failure, and the first success. He was the prodigal son, the runaway who returned to his place at Bruce’s side. It was a position earned with blood—a terrible privilege. He couldn't stay away, he'd tried, he was the only one that could temper Bruce's fire.
Dick drew lines in the sand- screamed in Bruce’s face, called him out on his failings, demanded better of him- then he took the man’s punches “for not knowing his place.” There was never an apology (not that Dick would accept it). He wiped the blood off his face, and when someone asked what happened, he said he slipped up, and some random mugger got in a lucky shot. He wasn’t sure who he was protecting when he said it. He still rushes to Bruce's side when called.
He recognizes bits of Bruce eating away at his soul. He tries desperately to stay Mary and John’s son, tries to keep the light alive in his soul. Robin is magic. He feels the darkness creeping in at the edges of his mind. He’s Nightwing; he’s not in Gotham, not in Bruce’s shadow, but he’s never been more of a Bat. He isolates himself and pushes people away. He’s too controlling, too morally rigid. The fearless leader become tyrant.
He fails each of the Robins in new and increasingly horrifying ways, but always for the same reason: he puts the mission first. Bruce is proud of him for it; somehow, that approval hurts him more than any punch ever did. It keeps him up at night, Tim’s face when he left (forced away by Dick’s actions), Damian’s pride at becoming Robin (he was only ten), Jason’s eyes filled with resentment and deep sadness (he had been right all along).
He hates Bruce when he sees him in the mirror. He hates Bruce when he hears him in his own voice. Bruce Wayne was the worst person on Earth, but Dick Grayson was his favorite son. So what did that make him?

thinking about neteyam, and how he kept getting things stolen from him all his life.
about how the inherited mischief that came with being the son of jake sully was ripped away from him when his grandmother smiled and declared you will be a great chief one day;
im thinking about how he was robbed of the future he grew up trying so hard to be worthy of—about the fifteen years of his past he had to leave behind as they walked away from their clan;
im thinking about his trinkets, necklaces and visors and arm guards, some lovingly given, some secretly collected, some clumsily made, gathering time in a box he will never open again;
i’m thinking about eldest children, and how they learn early on to scavenge for pieces of themselves that aren’t tainted by the curse of having to grow up faster;
and im thinking about how young neteyam must have been to know when to perform as a good son, a strong warrior, a worthy chief-to-be, and how he must have felt so lost when nobody answered his question of when he could stop;
how he must have always secretly wished he could get away from the chains that bound him to his duties, from all of it;
(i’m thinking about how neteyam’s last words were dad i want to go home i want to go home—)

having a sibling who is just so much younger than you is so weird. cause it’s like yeah, i’ll help you with the buttons, i’ll braid your hair, you can crawl into my bed after you have a nightmare, i’ll give you my last square of chocolate, i’ll pick you up from school, i’ll read you my favourite book, i’ll beat that boss in your video game that you have a hard time getting past, i don’t shout at you for singing that same disney song on loop for months. it’s don’t tell mom or dad about this, i’ll rip your bandaid off for you, i’ll put a bandaid on your knee, i’ll disinfect your cut, i’ll run a bath for you.
but also i’ll lick your ice-cream before i give it to you, i’ll give you the smaller piece, don’t touch my stuff, don’t go into my room, i’ll tell you lies that i think are harmless and funny, no you can’t go to the pub with me, no you can’t stay overnight in my dorm room, because i said so, because it’s against the rules, if i could take you to college with me i would, don’t look at me like that, im trying to study will you keep it down and i just don’t know what to do.

eldest sibling tournament
a tournament to decide the eldest sibling of all time!
rules:
this competition is limited to fictional eldest siblings, even though franz kafka would make a great competitor
the definition of an eldest sibling can be fuzzy—if you think your submission might not count as an eldest sibling (i.e., if they have an older half-sibling or if their younger siblings aren't biologically related to them) elaborate in the optional part of the submission form!
on a related note, it is unlikely that i will accept any twins (individually or separately) into the tournament. if you submit one, be sure to give an argument as to why they count as an eldest sibling despite having a twin.
submissions will be open for a week, until march 15th
submit your nominations here!
