Beneath The Skin | Daforge One Shot
Data's skin is softer than you'd think, and Geordi has repaired it many times. Despite all his attempts to become more human, Data has never gone to the medbay to get fixed up: it's always engineering.
"You're sure you don't want me to get a dermal regenerator?" Geordi jokes, as he replicates the appropriate material samples.
"My epidermis doesn't respond to the regenerator," Data says, as he cocks his head.
"I bet we could calibrate it to." Geordi takes a seat opposite him, and Data blinks.
"Geordi-"
"I know," Geordi smiles. "I'm only kidding."
"Oh."
He grabs the first sheet from the replicator: modified plastiform 33B, a nanopolymer which had taken him seven months to perfect. He still isn't sure what Dr Soong had created Data's original skin from, because it's tougher than human skin- more resilient to tears and bruises- while still being impossibly soft. Plastiform 33B was the closest he had come to the original recipe, but he's still not happy about it. He can understand a little better now what drove Soong's desire for perfection: if Geordi were to replace too much of the original skin with an almost-copy, then what will it do to Data? He's a one-of-a-kind ship-of-Theseus being, and for reasons Geordi will never understand, he's in his care.
"I never understood why he didn't make it self-repairing," Geordi says, under his breath. He squares off the damaged skin carefully, and his brow furrows.
Data perks up. "I can replace the polymer myself-"
"No," Geordi holds him still. "I'm not squeamish. It's just…"
A curious yellow gaze watches him.
"... I've always thought it's funny, that's all," Geordi muses. "I mean, he gave you a pulse, you can breathe-"
“That is how I regulate my internal temperature.”
"Right," Geordi smiles, and carefully peels away the damaged material, revealing the see-through frame and wires beneath. "But there’s just such a stark difference. The rest of you can self-repair, but when your skin gets damaged, it's gone for good.” He holds the replacement polymer up as if to demonstrate. "It feels the same, it looks the same, but it isn't. Not exactly. It's too tough at a molecular level. The thickness is the same, the tensile strength, but you can't bruise anymore. Not exactly.” He closes off the near-invisible seams, and examines his handiwork with a sigh.
“Is that a problem?”
“I dunno, Data… It’s just, if something were to strike you here, you'd have a bruise just under the eye, but your cheek…" his fingers brush along the replaced skin. "It'd be obvious, that's all.”
“It would be obvious until you replaced the skin around my eye, too.” Data says, and Geordi smiles.
“I know. I just can't shake the feeling that I'm ruining you.”
Data tilts his head. “But, Geordi- plastiform 33B is self-repairing and self-replicating.”
“That’s right.”
“So you have improved upon the original design.”
Geordi blinks.
“My functionality is now more in line with the human experience,” Data clarifies.
“I guess I didn't think about that,” Geordi says, and he can't resist the urge to touch his face one last time. “You’re human enough for me.”
