Taken the same day, we changed to a new location to find birds, but I found a 'Opatrum sabulosum'. In Sweden, they occur on the southern half wherever open and sunny areas with patchy vegetation on well-drained sandy soil. The imagos occur from March to July and are flightless with no hind wings. The imagos feed on emergent vegetation along with dead plant matter. Oviposition begins in late April to early June when females lay up to ten eggs in the soil 2-5 cm deep, and can lay up to a hundred in a season. Instars emerge within 3 weeks based on temperature, feeding on the cotyledons and stems of young plants, but larger instars will feed on seeds, roots, and tubers. They become fully grown within 8-10 weeks, pupate at the end of June 3-6 cm underground, and imagos emerge after a week or two. These new imagos will then overwinter in the soil 20 cm deep before starting the life cycle all over again. A visitor in our garden. This is a Blue Death-Feigning Beetle. They are a harmless desert dwelling species of darkling. Unlike their cousins Pinacate Beetles (stink beetle, clown beetle, etc.) These guys do not spray a foul bad tasting liquid, their method of defense is to play dead. When handled or surprised, they go limp. Sometimes for a long time! They commit to the act! They eat plant matter, fruit, detritus, and occasionally carrion. The blue color, is actually a waxy secretion used stop water loss. If you were to get one wet, it would wash away and you would find a black beetle! But soon enough, they would be blue again.
