holy shit it just occurred to me what a tragic character Dalben really is.  He has to grapple with the knowledge that the boy who he loves as a son be truly heroic and will choose a kingdom of sorrow and suffering over one of happiness, and that Dalben can’t stay with him. He has to leave the people that he loves, the land that Coll loved, the cottage.  He has to leave because of what he is, because he can never renounce his magic the way Eilonwy does.  He will never watch the Red Fallows grow green again over Coll’s grave. He has to his home, his family, and everything he has held dear to him, all in order to allow Prydain to grow as it must.  And the worst part?  He has always known that this was his fate. He knew the second he accidently drank the potion, the moment he opened the Book of Three, the instant he first met Coll, the day he found Taran.  He knows he will lose them all, and he has chosen to love them anyway.
Anyway, that’s why I’m crying tonight!

Taleweaver Rereads Prydain: The Book of Three
I decided to reread the Chronicles of Prydain because earlier in the month they kept popping up on my radar, and I haven't read them in a while. And then I decided to post about it because I haven't done that in a while! I read these in 2015 or 2016, but haven't touched them since, so while I remember some bits, most of it's a blur. So. Let's go!
Chapters 1–9
I appreciate that the forward establishes that this is inspired by Welsh myth, not a retelling of Welsh myth. Important distinction there. I also appreciate that the forward acknowledges that it kinda did Arawn dirty, as the original Arawn was a pretty stand-up guy.
The opening of the book does two things very well: it establishes Taran's character/desires (young, not yet wise, desirous of heroism and glory to the point where he disregards the value of common things) and it appeals to kids who will 100% sympathize with wanting to learn to do something cool but instead having to do the very un-cool but more practical thing in the process of learning.
That said, I am kind of with Taran on one point: if you don't have horses, making horseshoes is kinda silly, and I feel like there must be more practical introductory projects that they could've gone with.
The difference between old fantasy and new fantasy: new fantasy, when introducing an oracular pig, would have a complex explanation for why this particular pig was magical and able to tell the future (and why she might not actually be a pig at all, but merely something pig-shaped). Old fantasy, such as this, keeps it simple: here's a pig. She can tell the future. Why? Doesn't matter. She just can.
On a related note, there's something to Dalben's "I could explain everything to you, but you'd just be more confused (because you don't have a proper knowledge base to understand), so I'm going to let you figure it out yourself and make your own conclusions" that I think is very good advice for both education and writing.
And there's something to his follow-up statement of "Of course, your conclusions will probably be wrong, but you'll be happier with them because they're yours" that I think tells us a lot about people and culture . . .
I'm pretty sure "Taran touches/messes with things he has no business touching/messing with" is the theme of this book, and I'd forgotten it started so early (with him getting burned by the Book of Three).
GWYDION. I love Gwydion, and I love his introduction. I don't know if Gwydion has Aragorn vibes or Aragorn has Gwydion vibes, but they are cut from the same cloth.
Gwydion is so exasperated with Taran from very early on (or that's how I read him), and I am so with him on that. I forgot how much of an eejit Book 1 Taran is. But Gwydion is also doing his best to be patient and look after the kid, despite the fact that Taran seems determined to get in as much trouble as possible, and this is why I love the man.
"But he's so . . . bald." "I wasn't aware that the length of a man's hair had anything to do with his heroism." I'm paraphrasing, but this exchange.
Also: "We have to find Hen Wen!" "That's the first sensible thing you've said all day." Agreed, Gwydion. Agreed.
(I should not be making this much fun of Taran. I know he's just a kid. But also, he makes it so easy.)
(And I think Eilonwy is also with me on that one, so.)
Eilonwy is a delight and Taran does not remotely deserve her at this point. She is doing her best, and her best is a sight better than pretty much anyone else currently on hand.
FFLEWDER FFLAM. My fourth-favorite literary bard!
“By all means! A Fflam to the rescue! Storm the castle! Carry it by assault! Batter down the gates!" "There's not much of it left to storm." "Oh? Very well, we shall do the best we can.”
This man I love him.
I will say, as much of an eejit as Taran is at this point, at least he knows how to apologize fairly well. Also, his "The bards would sing of us, but we'd be in no position to appreciate it" is great — it's showing a hint of the person he's going to become.
More to come tomorrow!

Black Cauldron AU (this one deserves an ask of its own)
OKAY I FORGOT TO FINISH RESPONDING!! SO! It's based on the books and the movie because nostalgia says I want Gurgi to look cute and not like a demon monkey. But it's basically the same plot! Link is an assistant (I was thinking Horse rather than Pig Keeper so it could be Epona) an old woman Impa (think TP Impaz for this version) and I had Rhoam as Dalben originally but then I found my other notes that made him Impa and left it with a ? for Coll. ANYWAY, he gets captured with Epona(?) and meets Zelda in the dungeons who has book Eilonwy's story, like with Achren. Terrako was Gurgi's name but it's not a robot lol so i might need to go through and reassess these names but ALAS it's in the notes! And i was going to combine the Horned King and Arawan for Ganon to make life easier, but it might be fun to have like, Demise/Ganon or use Zant, Ghirahim, etc. Clearly need to go through the character list again hahhaha! I also aged them up because Taran is like, what, fourteen or something way too young for my brain to process, so Link is 18.
All the italics disappeared but Pfff whatever. Here's some of the beginning.
Link was a clumsy boy. From the time he was young, when Impa and Rhoam had first taken the foundling to their farm, he’d stumbled around and fallen nearly every time. He loved to try to balance on everything, wobbling and jerking forward and backward and every which way, only to fall the second he took a step. Impa, once a renowned warrior, looked after him most of the time. And while they’d made no attempt to conceal Link’s mysterious appearance and unknown birth, Link treated Impa like a mother in many ways, a sister in others, and a friend in all the rest. And in kind, Impa treated Link with the respect and anxiety that’s brought on to all those who are unprepared for sudden parenthood. Rhoam, on the other hand, was far too old to care for Link in the way he needed when he was younger. As a man of one hundred and sixty three, Rhoam was one of the few people that Link knew of who actively had the ability to use magic in such a way. Sure, Impa could conjure up illusions and managed enchantments that helped in a fight, but Rhoam’s magic was far older than that, and it was one that Link greatly wished to understand. But Link was a clumsy boy. He’d dropped Rhoam’s tombs, spilled his cauldron, fallen into maneure, dropped scalding weapons from the forge. If there was an incident to take place, Link had somehow done it. But Link was growing older, nearing his eighteenth birthday. He was not as lanky as he had once been, muscles filling out his tunic where there had once been the bones of a boy who ate well but looked underfed. His arms especially were exceptionally toned, as were Impa’s. She enjoyed comparing theirs side by side as a comparison. She still had him beat. And while Link had been a clumsy boy, he was not as clumsy a man. He’d begun to help Impa at the forge, making horseshoes and tools that they needed and selling those they didn’t. His arm swung the hammer, connecting with the anvil with resounding echoes that had Impa impressed. He worked the horses, fed the pigs, milked the cows, tilled the land, and practiced his swordplay. Impa watched that warily.

Ten Characters, Ten Fandoms
tagged by @morfinwen and @castingmysilver - thank you! also an open tag by @lady-merian and @valiantarcher
1. Antorell (Enchanted Forest Chronicles) - every time Cimorene throws a bucket of lemon soapy water on him it’s so satisfying 2. Dr. Henry Morgan (Forever) - so enthusiastic about such seemingly random and or mundane things (I think there’s a scene early in the series where he’s talking about the Wright brothers and that sticks out for me as why I love this character--not so much for the interest itself, but the way it’s expressed) 3. Shadowchild (Digger) - “I found a sock!” 4. Boromir (Lord of the Rings) - every time I see the post about Boromir getting to see Gondor renewed and I stop and flail over it for a minute because yes, that would have been so cool, but it also makes you wonder if the characters who lived through the renewal have the same perspective? something something the difference between seeing an end result and putting in the work... 5. Achren (Prydain Chronicles) - sometimes I think she’s my favorite when she’s staying at Caer Dalben, and other times I think she’s my favorite when she’s mistress of Spiral Castle... 6. Eliot Spencer (Leverage) - the grumpy competent one 7. Telemakos (The Sunbird) - the salt mines!!! 8. The redheaded woman (The Perilous Gard) - this is the woman who warns Kate and gives her the cross-- very like the Dracula Daily post about the villagers giving Jonathan garlic and crucifixes--here is a symbol of protection, the way is perilous,  do not go alone 9. The pointy haired boss (Dilbert) - the strip where Dilbert ‘reboots’ the etch-a-sketch lives rent free in my brain 10. Gilan (Ranger’s Apprentice) - the easy-going competent one

AU where Achren lives and has to go to the Sun Kingdom with everyone else, prompting just the MOST awkward boat trip ever between her, Gwydion, Fflewdur, Dalben, and Gurgi.

Though frankly I think the best author for this one would be the one who gave us this:

ok Now that I know you will answer these what is your opinion on Coll and Dalben I need to know.
are they gay and in love?
are they gay and just really good friends?
Why are they Like That and why do they make me want to cry?
Best guess? You want to cry because they're the only content motherfuckers in this entire series.
(To be fair they're already outliers because it's rare to have any content characters in any fantasy series. It's the quintessential I Want genre.)
Everyone else really really Wants something, and is out there in the world pursuing it. Dallben and Coll are like. Peace out. I'm going to spend my life growing turnips and presumably drinking cocktails on the porch. What war.
They like their home SO MUCH and they'd be happy to stay at it forever. It's a really stark contrast to Taran, but it means he always has this extremely good safe place to return to, and at the end of the series he chooses that over sailing west with the elves or whatever it was.
They're besties to me, and I also kind of see Dallben as a universal mentor figure, including for Coll. I think they rely on one another a lot, and maybe round each other out. Magic guy + farming guy = harmony? It's very sweet.
I don't think they're in love, but they ARE pretty good dads

#segeln #sailing #segelboot #sailinglife #yacht #ostsee #sail #ukulele #meer #yachting #segelnmachtgl #sammy #urlaub #boat #sea #boatlife #boot #regatta #segelyacht #sailingyacht #nature #rn #segelschiff #sailingboat #yachtlife #ostsee #kanaren #segler #k #segelt https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmD-5xNSJC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taleweaver Rereads Prydain: The Book of Three (Part 2)
I decided to do these as separate posts instead of reblogs because otherwise the post will get really long. Click here for Part 1 (Chapters 1–9, also a lot of facepalming at Taran and appreciating Gwydion.)
Also, as a note, I am putting very little effort into avoiding any but the most significant spoilers. The books are 50+ years old. I know the lucky 10,000 is a thing, but yeah.
Chapters 10–13 Thoughts
Despite the fact that Fflewddur Fflam is, again, my fourth-favorite literary bard, I apparently forgot about half of his backstory. Shame on me.
(It's ok, Fflewddur. You may not be an official bard, but I like you anyway. You can still be on my list.)
I cannot remember if the fact that Fflewddur is technically a king is ever addressed again. What is going on in his kingdom? Did he abdicate? Or is his kingdom just small enough that it can run itself without him looking after it?
While I retract none of my past comments about Taran's intelligence or common sense, I will give him this: once he gets some weight of responsibility on his shoulders, he learns fast. He's still a goose at times, of course, but he's less of one.
Contradicting this: "There is risk enough without having to worry about a girl." Taran. Dude. Eilonwy is, at this point, arguably the most competent member of your group. I know part of this is that you've been taught to protect girls, but trust me, you want Eilonwy along.
"In Caer Dalben, he had dreamed of being a hero. But dreaming, he had come to learn, was easy; and at Caer Dalben no lives depended on his judgement." Like I said: Taran does learn fast. Also, a lot of wisdom in that statement. Dreaming is easy. Doing is harder.
I do not ever remember reaching a point the first time I read these where I liked Gurgi. I could tell that I was supposed to like him, and I remember appreciating that he had a good character arc, but I didn't enjoy his scenes.
On the reread, thus far, I still don't enjoy his scenes (mostly because I find his manner of talking annoying), but I do have a lot more appreciation for his character (notably, the fact that he has more courage than it seems at first) and his situation (having "lost the wisdom of the animals without gaining the intelligence of men" — not an exact quote, but close enough; it's an interesting state to consider).
All Taran's conversations with Eilonwy seem to go sideways from how Taran wanted them, and sometimes that's his own fault, but sometimes that's on Eilonwy, and I do feel for Taran in those cases. "Somehow I can never seem to make it come out right" indeed, dude. I know exactly what you mean.
I forgot that there was a reference to Culhwch and Olwen in this book! (Though Alexander spells Culhwch as Kilhuch.) That's my second-favorite Welsh myth!
I also appreciate the implication that the in-world version of Noah is just hanging out in Prydain, never having died, looking out for the animals. It's great.
I may or may not finish the book tonight; if not tonight, 'twill be tomorrow for certain. We shall see.
