The romance in radio silence
Okay, so I was eating and started thinking about the romance in radio silence and how well it's written.
So I've read a few books in my life and some of them have romance out of nowhere, which kind of swallowed the plot and made me lose interest in the book. I like romance, but if I'm reading something and I don't expect romance, I probably don't want it.
I was reading one book a few years ago where it turned into a romance out of nowhere and the characters had no and I mean no chemistry, what so ever and they just kissed and I ended up not reading the rest of the book because the romance ruined it for me.
It was following the main protaganist and it was written where we, the readers, could see what she was thinking, but she never thought about the other main character like that, they just suddenly kissed and BOOM romance!
It was a fantastic book, but I never read it to the end, since it just became annoying with the change of plot.
Now, let's talk about Radio silence.
In radio silence, Aled and Daniel's relationship is hidden for quite long and it does kind of come out of nowhere, but it's written in a way that doesn't swallow the whole plot. It's in the backround and it stays in the backround, since the book's point wasn't romance.
Daniel and Aled's relationship is quite relevant in the book and brings a lot to both characters, but neither of them as characters don't bring it up and it isn't brought up if it's not the point. Neither of them talk about them being in a relationship until much much later on and it isn't brought up as just a romance that doesn't really bring the plot anywhere.
And on top of that, they have pretty bad moments where they both fear the other is going to leave the other and it's not solved without any problems happening after, since people and relationship aren't simple, after all.
As Radio silence isn't from Aled's nor Daniel's pov, we don't hear about their thoughts for each other until they talk about it to Frances which is after Frances already found out about it. Even when Frances found out in the book, she didn't think about it for long enough to make it annoying. She saw the two kiss at Aled's birthday, but that didn't evolve into the two characters ending up as "the couple" of the book.
I know it's different to have the main characters be in love rather than a main character and a more "side" character, but I wanted to talk about this. But from that, we get to my second point;
The romance between Frances and Carys.
Radio silence is from Frances' pov and we hear her thoughts through out the book. Her having been in love with Carys was in her thoughts and we know that, so it didn't feel like it was sudden and came out of the wood work without any warning what so ever.
I wasn't expecting that to be a part of the book when I originally read it, but it didn't end up overshadowing the whole plot about Frances and Aled's friendship. Frances had feeling for Carys, it came as a surprise, but it didn't become the whole plot.
The feelings or lack their off is mentioned through out the book, but it never felt overwhelming or overpowering with the rest of the book, it was a crush on your best friend who ended up not reciprocating and the difficulty of feeling like your feelings are something you should feel guilty for.
It's complex and not something that gets resolved with just a kiss.
Frances kissed Carys, she didn't feel the same then ran away before they got it solved. Later on, Carys kisses Frances who doesn't feel the same anymore, but it's not thought of something that destroyed their relationship.
In conclusion, I love the way romance is written in radio silence and how it's shown in a very realistic light.
Radio silence's whole plot is about love, it's different forms and how it effects people and leaves a mark on them.

FEBRUARY FRIDAY 2023 WEEK 2: Creativity/Freedom/Fashion

CREATIVITY:
Frances had a less than a day before her art assignment was due. It was a abstract piece which she technically had time to complete two weeks ago.
She became more carefree ever since Universe City. That was what she was currently painting, though more colorful. Some people were within in it. She found a curly haired woman, a guy with long pink hair, and a nerd.
Her phone rung, it was the group chat with her, Dae-Sung, and Aled. What was another hour? She was nearly done anyway.
FREEDOM:
For some people college was a misery where weights were dropped upon their back. For Dani- no. Dae-Sung it meant freedom. His university had a LGBTQ support group and he’s been able to act out more.
Of course he’s still focused on his studies, he became far too far to fail a class. He needed this and he deserved this. However, tonight he would relax. Nothing was thankfully due tomorrow so he pulled out his laptop. He listened to the new Universe City episode. As he began to nod off he received a call. Frances and Aled. He didn’t have Friday classes anyway.
FASHION:
Aled never wore his jumpers, but he had over 20. Space, burgers, dogs, etc. He had it all. He never wore them though. Not for a while anyways. He’d wear the most boring clothes. Now all he could wear were his bold ones.
He’d never have gotten where he was without them. He should call them, they’d be awake. He was wearing his new Universe City jumper. They’d gotten merch after a while. Frances designed them all.
He went out of his doc and called Frances and Dae-Sung.
CALL:
Frances immediately said, “I’m painting while we’re doing this. No time not to.”
Aled laughed his quiet laugh. It became louder since he was younger, less controlled. Dae-Sung looked half asleep and held up his hand. He buried his face into his blankets hardly looking up at his laptop.
“Should I make a character for Dae-Sung?” Aled asked.
Frances perked up, “That’d be fun! What do you think Dae-Sung.”
Dae-Sung dug his head down, “Yeah, yeah sure. Why not? I’ve been helping every step of the way might as well get a character.”
Aled smiled his soft smile, beginning to become more bold.
“Call him Dormir he’s so tired,” Frances said.
“Dormir, Toulouse, and Radio,” Aled muttered. Dae-Sung fell asleep. “Perfect.”

First was OMORI, now Radio Silence: three headcanons per character, I'm just doing the Aled-Birthday-Trio because,,because
Frances:
Before Universe City, she was into Homestuck and even went as Kanaya for Halloween one year
Had a mini gender crisis with Aled, but her's only lasted all of 2 minutes before being resolved
She HATES Shakespeare. She has no reason, she simply does(she's also a big fan of the musical Something Rotten! once it comes out, and memorizes "God I hate Shakespeare")
Aled:
After the events of the story, they go through a gender crisis with Frances, but theirs goes a little something like: he/him, he/she, she/her?, she/they, they/she, they/them? That's comfy,,but,,, he/they, they/he, he/him, they/she/he, they/he, and finally they/them.
Whenever they sneeze, it's like they do a hard reset. Just sitting/standing/whatever completely still like 😑 for a few seconds before they can carry on with whatever they were doing
Has problems falling asleep 90% of the time but if you play with their hair, they'll fall asleep INSTANTLY. Just putty in your hands and then passed out for the night
Daniel:
Had a cardboard box in his room that he stuck tree stickers too and called a treehouse
Gets adopted by a gang of stray cats while at uni. They follow him everywhere but unfortunately, he's allergic to cats
LOVES audio books. He likes reading books, but doesn't have the time to do it himself. Once Aled finds out, the two sometimes get together/on a call and Aled will read books to him while he's working on school/work stuff
