I need to talk about how good the character designs are in The Mirror Visitor
The way the characters are described just sounds so real. Most of the characters aren’t conventionally attractive. They’re just normal people. Each character has a their own unique silhouette, body type, and style. One of my favorite character designs is Ophelia’s mother. She has a plump figure and likes to wear brightly colored dresses. She not afraid of speaking her mind and is always the center of attention. All of this information combined leads Debros to describe Ophelia’s mother as “a candy jar.” This description instantly put a smile on my face. It perfectly describes all the sweet, old, big, vivacious, and sometimes a sour women in my life that make me feel loved with their maternal nature. I wish more books would portray mothers this way instead of just making them a milf or a slightly older clone of their child. (Nothing against milfs tho).
Here is a chara design I made for class. It's Ophélie from "The Mirror Visitor" ("La Passe Miroir" in french), a fabulous books saga written by Christelle Dabos 🪞
Why is it whenever I find a new story my silly goofy little golden retriever brain goes omg the villain lady! Yeah. Because that was a good idea… I can list so many.
What the actual stupid horny mess is this document I apparently wrote titled The Bajoran Woman with some notes and a scene or two outlined??? I think it was made on a NyQuil night
I used somewhat the same art style from art block p.t. 2
Context:
After Valeria was turned into a vamp, she delt with a lot of ptsd. Not just from the turning but her childhood memories came flowing back. And that women did not have a good childhood. With everything going on in her life, she was highly su!cidal and the best way to "fix" herself would to 💀, yes i mean unaliving. But with being a vampire and all you couldn't so she faked it and ran away from home bcs amellia was still young and didn't know about supernaturals existing, so she thinks valeria is dead. On the other hand her brother, Jordan, did know what actually happened and is trying his best to find her till this day. So in end the whole family fell apart.
"For Leeta to become the mother of a boy who went off to war is so not a dabo girl. And I think it's the most Star Trek message that we are so much more than we seem. I'm the former dabo girl running the show and what is better than that?" - Chase Masterson aka Leeta talking about her character and guest appearance on Lower Decks in which we find her running the Ferengi Alliance (x)
Chase Masterson has often given very good observations of what Trek is all about. She also said, "Lower Decks can have you laughing and crying in the same five minutes. It's so beautifully full."
Sisko- I like this set, though I could do without the writing. It's comfortable, but still... alluring. (Also I have pictured him in leather bottoms that lace up a few times but I don't consider that lingerie)
O'Brien - I do not think he wears lingerie of his own volition, but I do think Keiko has talked him into interestingly designed undies once or twice
Julian - something something that time he unzipped his uniform and had no undershirt on. Technically this is dance wear, but it's also literally a body suit. I definitely think simple, classy black is more his style- a contrast to his off duty tendency of dressing like a parrot externally
Garak - (honestly you can probably say a lot of Aint Born Typical's designs suit him. Also I really like them because all their designs are made to fit a range of bodies, not just skinny women) I really like the red suit he wears, and I think the slightly elevated but still subtle design this one has from the beaded drops would suit him.
Kira - (cut rant about how most lingerie is unimaginative and scared of androgyny) I chose this set because I don't think Kira would wear anything too fussy, and the herringbone detail reminds me of her uniform's undershirt and of Bajor's passion for crochet. I don't think she'd necessarily go for this color though- maybe more of a sage green. I could also see her wearing what Sisko does
Jadzia - the impression I get from her civvies is she likes things purple and drapey
Odo - the cheat answer is that Odo canonically doesn't even wear normal underwear and is going commando to an extreme we can only dream of. I feel like he would copy a dabo girl and end up with something like this if he had too though
Well, guess who won’t be able to listen to L’amour est un oiseau rebelle for at least a month.
(I started writing a lot of stuff in the tags, so why not make a full post. Overflow of unedited immediate-post-ending thoughts incoming)
Ok, this book is a mess, I’ll be brutally honest, it almost felt like reading an unedited manuscript with lots and lots of good ideas that were being thrown at me without a breathing moment. And Dabos really got carried away with borrowing stuff from His Dark Materials. And I didn’t really grasped the character arcs (this is my fault though, I'll need a reread yada yada yada).
But as I said, I really esteem Christelle Dabos for choosing to change entirely the scope and taste of her series; here it takes a truly dark and disturbing turn (the claustophobric anxiety of the Observatoire, the straigh-up body horror of the Horn of Plenty)... only for the ending to be the most hopeful possible. (spoilers under the cut)
I was lead to think this would be a bleak conclusion thrown in for shock value, but it's just not? Eulalie turning out to be a genuinely good person who was really striving for the best; Victoire and Second getting to have a childood and the Family Spirits getting to have a life. The last scene perfectly mirroring the very first of the series in tome 1. Ophèlie entering her Orpheus era and yet never ever loosing her willpower. Thorn who, after four books of costant trying, finally managed to sacrifice himself for her, but she just won't let him. His answer on the other side of the page/mirror!! Perfection.
