CZ Scorpion Evo S1…Still Relevant?

I’ve had a CZ Scorpion Evo S1 in my collection for the past 5 years or so. It was my very first dive into the realm of the PCC (pistol caliber carbine) or subgun world. The CZ Scorpion is CZ’s answer to the HK MP5 and other subguns around the world. There has even been a recent updated version that’s been hitting the shelves in the last year or so. The particular CZ Scorpion Evo that I own started out life as an 8” barrel pistol version in 9MM. They also offer a K or micro version with a 4” barrel as well as a carbine version that has a 16” barrel and a stock. You want colors? The CZ Scorpion can be had in black, FDE, OD Green as well as grey. Mine is an OD Green version. The CZ Scorpion costs roughly 1/3 of the price of the HK MP5 in the U.S. market, maybe a tad less. The difference in price between the CZ Scorpion and an MP5 clone is much less. For folks wanting a PCC but not spend the amount commanded by HK for the MP5, the CZ Scorpion makes a lot of sense. You can scratch that subgun itch for a fraction of the cost, but that savings does come at a price.

When I first received my CZ Scorpion, there were a number of items I didn’t like right off the bat. The grip angle, the stock safety selector, the trigger as well as the handguard. I appreciated the original design, but knew that things could be much better. Luckily Brownells carries a number of components for the CZ Scorpion. The first upgrade I went with was a new handguard from Midwest Industries. The handguard is fairly easy to install. The trigger was polished and a new set of springs from HBI were installed. The trigger is much better than factory, but still can be much better overall. Subguns aren’t known for having the best triggers generally speaking. Parker Mountain Machine offers a nice set of replacement safety selectors which work very well over the stock safety. The grip is the Yeti switchback grip. Magpul has also started making components such as grips, but I’ve yet to try one out.

Some time later, I decided to do a full K conversion of sorts with the shorter 4” barrel from In Lead We Trust. This barrel has both a thread end as well as an integrated 3 lug adapter for suppressor use. Of course I had to also grab a shorter Midwest Industries handguard from Brownells. Most recently I decided to file a form 1 to SBR my CZ Scorpion so that I could add a stock assembly. For the stock, so far I’m running the Reptilia Zhukov setup, but may entertain other options later on.

So back to the original question… in a world with a number of PCC/subgun options such as the MP5, B&T GHM9/APC, Stribog and others, is the CZ Scorpion still relevant? I say absolutely! The CZ Scorpion is cheap enough, but still has the quality of a world renowned manufacturer behind it. Is it perfect? No. But it’s a gateway into other PCC options down the road. And with a little bit of money, the CZ Scorpion can be tailored and refined to your likes.

Let’s Talk About Pistol Caliber Carbines…

Some years ago I had the itch for some unknown reason to pick up a CZ Scorpion Evo. As ugly as the CZ Scorpion is, there was just something about having a short rifle-like package that was shooting a pistol caliber, in this case it was 9MM. Now many people will debate the effectiveness of the 9MM cartridge and that’s a discussion for another day, but there is the allure of having a high capacity compact package. Many will use their PCC for home defense, competition or even as a truck gun that can carry a lot of firepower, but can be hidden out of sight when not needed. But let’s get back to the CZ Scorpion. For what it is, at the time, it was a reasonably priced entry into the PCC world. The entire gun, sans the barrel and some hardware are made of high strength polymer. The trigger is probably one of the worst triggers out there and it has an annoying ambi safety that will dig into your shooting hand. But hey, it’s a low priced PCC that can be upgraded if so desired. It had a number of different barrel lengths available at the time, a 16” and 8.3” version. The shorter “K” length 4.5” version had not yet been introduced. As short as the 8.3” version was, everyone wants to go even shorter. A few companies make aftermarket barrels, namely HBI and ILWT. I made the decision to get a barrel from ILWT and a shorter Midwest Industries hand guard from Brownells and do the conversion myself. I documented the conversion progress and released a series of videos on my YouTube channel which people still find helpful today. To address the horrendous trigger, I disassembled it, polished all of the surfaces and installed an HBI spring set. The safety can be ground down and many companies make aftermarket safeties. I chose a nice set from Parker Mountain Machine.

So I had my CZ Scorpion set up exactly the way I wanted it, but thought, there must me more out there to continue to scratch that PCC itch. I’ve always loved AKs and a couple of companies started producing readily available 9MM AK PCCs. Both Palmetto State Armory as well as K-USA had 9MM AKs. The PSA version was their own design, whereas the K-USA version was a direct clone of the Russian Vityaz. I chose to pick up the K-USA KP-9 and so happy that I chose to go that route. They do come in and out of stock over at Brownells, but can be acquired at multiple vendors. The KP-9 is an AK true and true, but uses a direct blowback system. The only upgrades I’ve done to date have been an ALG trigger. The KP-9 is an impressive piece of machinery and an absolute joy to take to the range.

So anyone who is into PCCs has to have heard about something called an HK MP5. The HK MP5 is truly an infamous and iconic PCC or sub gun that has been in service around the world for many decades now. Based upon a delayed roller action, it’s as smooth as butter to shoot as anyone who’s shot one can tell you. A true HK MP5 is quite hard and expensive to come by on the civilian market, but a number of companies make clones. I had the opportunity and picked up a Century Arms imported MKE AP5 from Brownells. MKE is actually licensed by HK, so these are true to the original design and all parts will interchange. So finally, I had achieved The top of the PCC wish list, an MP5! And it truly is the smoothest of the smooth when it comes to PCCs. I added a few upgrades to it, a Midwest Industries hand guard, SB Tactical brace and Magpul grip module. I always run my PCCs with a Rugged Suppressors Obsidian 9 suppressor and the MP5 seems not to care that it has that extra back pressure, it runs like a sewing machine.

So if you have that itch for a PCC, you don’t have to look very far and you will find a bunch of different options available to you. They range in prices from the super affordable to the wildly expensive, but there’s something for everybody. I was not sure where the adventure down the PCC path was going to lead me, but I’m sure glad I chose to start down this road. And who knows just where it’ll lead me next… B&T?
