#reading the appendices rn and im aware that this is tolkiens 'translation/anglicisation' of what the name would acc be in Westron#but its still really funny to me that goldilocks is a canon lotr character#i feel like when frodo said call your daughter goldilocks it was a joke but sam took it 100% seriously#i love that tolkien was like nah the hobbits names youve got so used to are not their actual names i translated them for your convience#girl why are you telling us at the END????? 😭 after like 900 pages of getting used to these names#i joke but i love how tolkien meticulously thought out every detail. it really makes feel like hes translating a real history#the level of detail is mind blowing#but also#the way tolkien writes about mixed race charas has always been insidious (the way he idolises 'pure blood' is so yikes)#but reading the part in the appendices about the half-elven being made to choose between being elven or man made me so sad#he doesn't even scratch the surface of how alienating that would be being made to renounce half of your identity like that#this is fuelling my fire to explore mixed race identities in a more nuanced manner in my own fantasy work!! drawing from my own experience#cuz tolkien was a dude from the early 20th century his takes on stuff like this are... lacking to say the least#text post#lotr#lord of the rings#samwise gamgee
