Base was originally a blue Tomy Zoids Command Wolf. Primed first using slate gray (aerosol), and everything else is hand painted minus the custom red canopy which was commissioned by the lovely AllieCatzCreations on Etsy!
All that’s left is the two thin white line bands across the shoulder armor and then add RZ-009 decal stickers along with two thinner white line bands on the neck armor. I’ll probably lightly spray a matte finish to keep the paint job in tact before and after, and maybe add any details that I had forgotten.
Almost there! :D
Here’s the original concept (under cut) for those wondering <3
I may or may not add the red circles...don’t have quite a thin brush to do that. I’ll try out an acrylic wash beforehand, but if it doesn’t work I’m fine leaving it be.
One menacing little meitantei I finished back in September for a contest at Nan Desu Kan 2022 :3c He both lights up (shoes and glasses) and has secret definitely not evil details which can only be revealed under black light. He placed second in the "figurine" category!!
Base kit is this Bandai Entry Grade Conan Edogawa that can be bought very cheaply and assembled without any hobby-specific tools. But I am a hobbyist and I do have a lot of tools on hand so I went a little nuts (below the break):
Base is scratch-built from black acrylic and real brick and mortar (these little slips are the kind made for cladding dollhouses). Since the brick material is real, it's heavier than it looks. Box was designed to have a removable door on the bottom in order to access the custom LED wiring and the on/off switches. It's just a door with a notch in it that you pry off with any tool that will fit, as it's only being held in place with double-sided tape.
There are two custom LED circuits wired into the figure. One circuit controls the LED in his glasses and runs all the way from a tiny spot just above his left eye (the LED is very small! just .6mm) down through his body, to his feet, and into the base. The other controls the ones in his shoes. The wires are not visible except behind the door in the base, they are routed through many a hand-drilled hole.
The wires are incredibly fragile since they're so tiny... pieces fatigued off when I was putting this together since I was handling them too much trying to figure them out. I definitely could have done a better job here but I've given myself a pass since it's my first foray into this kind of stuff. It also works, so I can't ask for more, really.
The blue color in his eyes is hand-painted. The kit provides a sticker sheet for the details (below) but instead I opted to paint them in with my smallest brush because I'm a masochist I guess
For what it's worth, I think it paid off lol. I did try to apply at least one of these and I thought it looked incredibly jarring, plus I didn't really trust the strength of the adhesive to stick well while I hauled him around.
Similarly, the sticker that is used for the homing glasses radar on the lens that lights up is custom-made. The kit does not come with this detail and I wanted something to justify the trouble of wiring up his glasses. A custom waterslide decal would have been ideal, but the issue with this one would've been finding a vendor that can print white (most run-of-the-mill custom services can't).
Under black light, Conan is knee-deep in UV-reactive paint splatter. I wanted to mimic the look of a luminol reaction on blood. Yeah this might've been an extremely self-indulgent decision because the shine in his eyes glow with this same paint too LOL but there was no way I wasn't completing the look by going for some evil eyes >:) Makes him look like an animal at night and I'm very here for it and also tagging this as Evil Conan now hehehe
With the exception of his glasses, and his eyes, the entire kit is finished with a matte topcoat. Without it, he's got a very plastic, glossy shine to him. The topcoat protects the black light paint, too.
Anyway I'm quite proud of this and I'm glad I finally took good pics ;0; It's very different from my usual gunpla-adjacent stuff (Zoids) and because the kit is so affordable I was more comfortable with experimenting. I'm delighted to have placed at all in the contest, and now I have unwavering confidence I can carry this experience to other kits I have on backlog >w<
IV noticed a lack of zoid games and I find it a waste of potential for zoids to be stuck with vs beat em up games, we need a zoid game similar to the armored core mech games where we can chose a zoid we like and customize it's weapon load out and fight massive battles against enemy zoids. If you feel the same repost this till someone higher up notices!!!
Mia was originally a Zoids OC? Was it for Chaotic Century/Guardian Force, or New Century Zero? Please give me the Zoids!Mia lore, I crave it.
She was originally a mainly Guardian Force OC! I made her back when I was a Super Edgy Metalhead (TM) so she was a bit of a mess with an Edgy Dark story and she went through a few revisions before I returned to her original idea and reworked it into something more rational. putting the stuff under a read more bc Im afraid of the cringe
Mia and her little sister Misha became orphaned towards the end of Chaotic Century when a band of mercenaries attacked the town they lived in. They fled in their father's custom Command Wolf and wandered around the desert and nearly died, but the leader of a terrorist cell picked them up and forced Mia to become a terrorist too, under the threat of killing Misha. Mia gets captured by the Guardian Force and with their help they rescue Misha and defeat the terrorist so wheee yay it's got a lot more meat and it's very fun to think about but I don't really write about ocs anymore here oops
Also I got this guy for five! His other shoulder pauldron is broken but I have it and his gun even though the peg broke. I'm going to partially disassemble it so I can customize it. I've yearned to play around with customizing a zoid
So these are zoids that are developed from Blade & Shield Liger that have not, to my knowledge, appeared independently in any media or canons outside of video games or literature.
Firstly the Shields
The Spark Liger appears once in the Official Fan Book Vol 2, in the Zoids Modification Project section. One thing I don't understand about it's load-out is the Wiki articles claim of "electron strike claws"; according to the Iron Bible zoid index, the Strike Claws that are standard to the configuration of both OG Shield Ligers and Saber Tigers/Fang are already electromagnetic & discharge electricity into their target. But overall the Spark Liger is one of my favorite members of this group!
I would have loved to see the Spark Liger featured in an anime or 3D game.
The Blade Liger:
Although it is not specified on the list, I am of the position that the high-output ion boosters mounted on blade arms make yet another appearance on the Slash Liger, which approximating from the Blade Liger means that this zoid has 3 total boosters
Slash Liger appeared in an old webcomic entitled ZOIDS Delusional War Record, the 2nd chapter of which can be viewed here: zoids.fandom.com/wiki/Lidier?so=search#Models
The Snipe Liger is probably the biggest stand-out of this family: it is so dedicated to being a run' n' gunning specialist that it doesn't even have a set of jaws.
According to the fandom wiki this zoid appeared in a Zoids Battle Story webcomic, possibly Delusional War Record, but I'm not sure at this time.
The story gets set off by Closure (this works better with a playable Closure but isn’t necessary) getting a message/letter from Eunectes, who’s been back home for a bit, that she needs her mentors help with something in Acahualla. Naturally Closure goes to assist
When she arrives Closure is greeted by crowds of Acahuallans and the newly above ground Durin cheering as two small scale zoids piloted by Durin duke it out in an arena/designated area of the jungle
She meets up with Eunectes, who explains that a combined group of Durin and Acahuallan’s stumbled onto an old massive machine shaped like a beast in a mine/old temple etc. Curiosity being what it is the groups work together looking into the machine, finding logs on it detailing other such machines and more importantly, logs about what they are for.
Gladiatoral combat.
Giant animal robot fighting is a massive hit with both groups, So everyone, lead by Deculture Silvermint goes all in on making smaller scale (due to lack of resources) Zoids that Durin can pilot in contests. Eunectes called Closure I’m not to put a stop to this, but for her mentors help in making her own Zoid.
Shenanigans ensue, as you might expect, all culminating in a final showdown against Silvermint either piloting or stuck inside the ancient zoid gone berserk, because I think it’s really funny if there’s a trend of the Durin characters being the bosses of their own events every time.
Character wise it’d have Silvermint as the welfare 5/6 star Artificer and if they have the FUN writers on staff the other 2 units would be a Durin pilot melee unit and a humanoid zoid that is the result of Eunectes achieving her dream of building a talking robot with the zoids tech and giving us a 6 star Robot operator.
There could also be 6 star Arts Defender Eunectes kitted out in some pilot gear and with an S3 that involves summoning her custom zoid akin to her bringing out The Big Ugly Thing in her base unit. This would be fun but I’m still jaded about not getting monhun monsters as operators so let me have my zoid operators, I need this.
