Shop for stylish hijabs and female Islamic apparel online.
Tumblr media
This term is used in the Qur'an to refer to the dividing of the security-giving curtain. Due to recent technological advancements, you can now buy Islamic kimonos online. The Muslim commandment in the Quran is to approach the women of the Blessed Prophet  wear the hijab, and provide a cloak or division of speech. Then, through law and Hadith, the concept of the hijab as a piece of apparel emerged.
modern hijab Different terminologies that are equivalent to hijab are used throughout the Qur'an, including khimar and jilbab. Muslim women must wear clothing and can't show off their beauty in public. They should keep covered, as prescribed by the Koran, and "shoot the cymbals on their bosoms." In any case, the concept of donning the cloak has evolved, indicating that the show's application and style change depending on socioeconomic contrasts in other parts of the world. The hijab is only permitted to be worn in a few specific circumstances, yet it is given strict priority in some parts of the world. For instance, the cover is crucial for women in Saudi society, and the majority of them purchase Purchase a kimono from Islam then, either online or in a store restricted in instructional foundations once again in Turkey and France.
Muslim women should wear fully encasing free dresses to distract them from their sexuality. They ought to wear a coat, a sarong, or a hive of bees to cover their heads. Many experts have different opinions on how much clothing they require to handle the problems with the Modern Muslim Hijabs Online. Some people agree that the woman should cover her entire body, including her hands, feet, and face, while others let her show just her shoulders while still keeping the rest of the body covered. The requirements of the cloak can be modified for young women because they should get practise in many areas beginning with pregnancy and moving forward.
Different cover types exist.
Contrasts in the region and culture are the underlying source of contrast. Muslim women can be seen in Pakistan, India, and other countries on the Indian subcontinent donning a burqa, a modest Islamic dress with two covers for their hair. Although the burqa is typically dark, women use various types depending on their preferences and fashion sense. Ladies in this region, near the Negev, wear a shroud that covers their head, face, and torso. Additional Kimono Styles Abaya is an outer garment worn by women that often consists of a dark caftan and covers them from head to toe. In Bedouin Bay and the Middle East, the abaya is often worn and harmfully woven. Poshiya, a cotton sail with rounded tubes attached to the cover, is another two-piece sail for women. Boekhout is the other cover that resembles a parka but is only worn on the chest. The lines are frequently woven beautifully. Afghan women's hair is covered from head to toe, and they have grills all over their bodies to help them see. The typical Iranian shroud is called a chador, and it is a huge, semi-round garment that covers women from the tops of their heads to the bottoms of their feet.

Chapter Three — Terrace
“People are almost always better than their neighbours think they are". - Middlemarch, George Eliot
Welcome to suburbia, dearest reader. It is always nice to have new visitors, although we struggle to know where to put you. Sleep on the sofa of a friend, or under a table, or brave the grime of the pavements, as long as you have enough to keep you warm. But expect to be moved along by the council shortly. We maintain an illusion of pristine space— at least from the outside.
Our glorious corner of the city, wherein we are squeezed like cattle, each house a sliver of the train of brick and mortar. If you were to look from a bird’s eye, there would be nothing to see but lines of grey roofs, barely dust. Not that we get many birds here, anyway. It’s a concrete paradise and most wildlife disappeared a long time ago along with the green space. It is strange to think that where we live could possibly once have been lush and pulsing, now. Return to the bird’s eye and see men scuttling like ants from door to car, escaping for some nine to five, to return scuttling just the same at the day’s end. And don’t think we have any leisure buildings, either: our town is empty of everything except the pure act of surviving. I’m a bartender. I have to drive thirty minutes into the centre to reach where people will pay to stay outside. There is no room for thoughts here. Nothing but incomprehensible bleakness paints the outside of these husks of men inside our husk of a town.
We’re infectious, too. Our cars and our roads are slowly seeping, black tar set to engulf the natural world, and we are all too thick with malaise to do anything about it. No one walks around the neighbourhood here. For the workers, it is because we are miles too far from the city centre, the children because it is too dangerous to play outside in the presence of violently speeding vehicles, and the rest of us because we would prefer to rattle our bones where no one can see us. Pick your private vice to keep going. For many it is booze, cigarettes, binge eating. For myself, I prefer the comforting incessant glow of a screen. To look into a world that isn’t mine. To fully deeply embed myself into the simulacrum.
Once upon a time, people tried living with pets here. Somehow, too many of them felt the pull of the freeway. Missing tends to mean dead.
Is your drive to own your own piece of real estate insatiable, despite your low income? Take a closer look at our dazzling house fronts. Each one is charmingly identical, with all the life and character of old bones. “Rustic”, “cosy”, “quaint”, if you are to believe the advertisements. And we fell for them, each and every one of us. Your neighbour and your neighbour’s neighbour are all trapped in this same prison. Even to look out of your window is to look onto another house front opposite, the same funereal disease.
I’m looking out of my window now. My room is on the second floor, so I have a little bit of height. The house opposite ours belongs to an old couple, retired, the wife decrepit and banging at death’s door so hard it is a wonder he won’t let her in. Late stage Alzheimer’s, if I am to believe the pulse of the gossip my mother feeds me. They’re from Pakistan, or somewhere like that. Not that it really matters. Their garden is barely a garden. There was grass in the patch next to the drive once, but not in the twenty eight years of my life I have lived here. I can see their windowsill though, perhaps the only distinguishing factor for one house to the next. This one has two damp infected photo frames. There’s a small cat made of china, probably bought for a dollar online. And there’s a vase which had flowers the week they moved in, but has since remained empty. It has a blue vine pattern trailing around it. A white net curtain, also grey with damp, remains drawn shut at all times. I have never seen further in than this window. I never want to.
We have never decorated our own windowsill. We like the blank space. Or no one ever gets around to dusting, and then we get allergies.
The house opposite ours has a car pulling in. It comes to a stop along the pavement, slotting into the long row of cars, each belonging to a different house. It’s grey with dust and road grime, although it was probably white once. A shrivelled man takes his time opening the driver’s door. He stumbles, gradually, round to the passenger side. He offers his arm to his almost dead wife. She grabs onto it and it is embarrassing the lack of mobility between the pair of them. They walk to the car’s boot, and the man takes out one plastic bag full of groceries. He tries to slam the boot once, and is too feeble, so has to open it to slam it shut again. They stumble, slower now he is dragging his wife along, to the front door. I watch as he fumbles with his keys, opens the door, drags his wife in with the groceries, and shuts it again. I shut my eyes. I hate to look at them. I hate to know they are here. My head is screaming pathetic pathetic pathetic.

A must read:
The Lost Jewel – Rediscovering Hazrat Imam Ali’s (A.S.) Letter
This is a fascinating story.
Pakistan’s premier female poet Fahmida Riaz, read a letter by Imam Ali (A.S.) while browsing through a translation of Nahaj ul Balagha. Today via email, she narrated how she was “so touched, and felt so angry for not knowing about it all my life, because really no one talks about the real jewels of Muslim history, they would rather conceal it from one generation after another”. She took notes from the ancient text and recently quoted it in her paper presented at an Urdu Conference held at Heidelberg, Germany.
On her current sojourn in the USA, she showed this text to Dr. Patricia Sharpe who was impressed enough to put it on her website under the title GOOD GOVERNANCE EARLY MUSLIM STYLE.
In her email Fahmida writes further that “Another American friend in Santa Fe is writing a book for the National Geographic about the achievements of Muslim thinkers and men of the sciences and letters. I showed him the text and he has asked me to forward it to him so that he may include it in his book. ‘The Americans should know about it ,’ he wrote. I have sent him the text, sighing to myself, “..and so should the Muslims”.
But really, what are we ever told about Islam or Muslims other than chopping of arms and killing of infidels? Or we are informed that Muslims once had a great empire, a brutal picture of conquest and subjugation of the so-called “infidels”. What do we know of Hazrat Imam Ali (A.S.) except that he was very brave with a legendary sword? Pretty little.
And writes Riaz: “here is this document, written by him,1500 or so years ago. The sheer beauty of his thought, the largesse of his great heart, the incredible refinement of his mind! It takes your breath away and brings tears to your eyes. And then, his understanding of the class structure of society.. long before anyone in the world paid attention to the composition of society! All this is so incredible.
The other ancient classics about governance that come to mind…. tell you how to invite your enemy to dinner and then stab him in the back. They tell you how to perpetuate your RULE. In comparison, Imam Ali (A.S.) is telling you how to create a State that provides the greatest opportunity for the people to be happy. So great was this man that even being remotely associated with him is an honour that we hardly deserve though we are all born in the fold of his faith.
Another thought that comes to haunt you: Hazrat Imam Ali (A.S.) was so close to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) that he could never say what he did not believe to be the Holy Prophet's (S.A.W) own will? O my God! Then in what unworthy hands his teachings fell! How unfortunate it is for us.”
I wanted to share this excitment and sadness of Fahmida on this space.
Here is the entry in Patricia’s blog where she has reproduced sections of letter and also improved the translations available online:
George W. Bush seems to think that the US political system must be replicated in structure and spirit in order for people to enjoy a decent political system. In fact, the Muslim world also has traditions and texts which establish the principles of good governance. Below are quotes from one such document, a document that might profitably be added to all basic political science syllabi. A close reading might also provide insights and terminology for American public diplomats tasked to engage Muslims in a dialogue about the universal human interest in fair, honest and competent government.
Ali bin Abi Talib (A.S.) Wali-Allah, the First Imam and son-in-law of the Holy Prophet Mohammed Mustafa (S.A.W), wrote a long letter of guidance after appointing Maalik al-Ashtar to be Governor of Egypt. He advises the new governor that his administration will succeed only if he governs with concern for justice, equity, probity and the prosperity of all.
The passages excerpted below illustrate the timeless applicability of Imam Ali’s (A.S.) admonitions. The letter itself is contained in the Nahjal Balaagha, which is a collection of the letters and speeches of the First Imam.
Manifest religious tolerance: Amongst your subjects there are two kinds of people: those who have the same religion as you [and] are brothers to you, and those who have religions other than yours, [who] are human beings like you. Men of either category suffer from the same weaknesses and disabilities that human beings are inclined to; they commit sins, indulge in vices either intentionally or foolishly and unintentionally without realizing the enormity of their deeds. Let your mercy and compassion come to their rescue and help in the same way and to the same extent that you expect Allah to show mercy and forgiveness to you.
Equity is best: A policy which is based on equity will be largely appreciated. Remember that the displeasure of common men, the have-nots and the depressed persons overbalances the approval of important persons, while
the displeasure of a few big people will be excused…if the general public and the masses of your subjects are happy with you.
The rich always want more: They are the people who will be the worst drag upon you during your moments of peace and happiness, and the least useful to you during your hours of need and adversity. They hate justice the most. They will keep demanding more and more out of State resources and will seldom be satisfied with what they receive and will never be obliged for the favor shown to them if their demands are justifiably refused.
A healthy society is interdependent: The army and the common men who pay taxes are two important classes, but in a well faring state their well-being cannot be guaranteed without proper functioning and preservation of the other classes, the judges and magistrates, the secretaries of the State and the officers of various departments who collect various revenues, maintain law and order as well as preserve peace and amity among the diverse classes of the society. They also guard the rights and privileges of the citizens and look to the performance of various duties by individuals and classes. And the prosperity of this whole set-up depends upon the traders and industrialists. They act as a medium between the consumers and suppliers. They collect the requirements of society. They exert to provide goods….Then comes the class of the poor and the disabled persons. It is absolutely necessary that they should be looked after, helped and provided….at least the minimum necessities for well-being and contented living….
Ensure an honest judiciary: You must select people of excellent character and high caliber with meritorious records….When they realize that they have committed a mistake in judgement, they should not insist on it by trying to justify it….they should not be corrupt, covetous or greedy. They should not be satisfied with ordinary enquiry or scrutiny of a case but…must attach the greatest importance to reasoning, arguments and proofs. They should not get tired of lengthy discussions and arguments.Theymust exhibit patience and perseverance…and when truth is revealed to them they must pass their judgements….These appointments must be made…without any kind of favoritism being shown or influence being accepted; otherwise tyranny, corruption and misrule will reign….Let the judiciary be above every kind of executive pressure or influence, above fear or favour, intrigue or corruption.
Poverty leads to ruination: If a country is prosperous and if its people are well-to-do, then it will happily and willingly bear any burden. The poverty of the people is the actual cause of the devastation and ruination of a country and the main cause of the poverty of the people is the desire of its ruler and officers to amass wealth and possessions whether by fair or foul means.
Corruption undermines national well-being: I want to advise you about your businessmen and industrialists. Treat them well….They are the sources of wealth to the country….One more thing….you must keep an eye over their activities as well. You know that they are usually stingy misers, intensely self-centered and selfish, suffering from the obsession of grasping and accumulating wealth. They often hoard their goods to get more profit out of them by creating scarcity and by indulging in black-marketing.
Stay in touch with the people: You must take care not to cut yourself off from the public. Do not place a curtain of false prestige between you and those over whom you rule. Such pretension and shows of pomp and pride are in reality manifestations of inferiority complex and vanity. The result of such an attitude is that you remain ignorant of the conditions of your subjects and of the actual cases of the events occurring in the State.
Peace brings prosperity: If your enemy invites you to a peace treaty….,never refuse to accept such an offer, because peace will bring rest and comfort to your armies, will relieve you of anxieties and worries, and will bring prosperity and affluence to your people. But even after such treaties be very careful of the enemies and do not place too much confidence in their promises, because they often resort to peace treaties to deceive and delude you and take advantage of your negligence, carelessness and trust. At the same time, be very careful never to break your promise with your enemy; never forsake the protection or support that you have offered to him, never go back upon your word and never violate the terms of the treaty.
History reveals all: Do not reserve for yourself anything which is a common property of all and in which others have equal rights. Do not close your eyes from glaring malpractice of officers, miscarriage of justice and misuse of rights, because you will be held responsible for the wrong thus done to others. In the near future your wrong practices and maladministration will be exposed and you will be held responsible and punished for the wrong done to the helpless and oppressed people.

Fake shopping websites plundering people of Pakistan
After the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country with prolonged lockdowns and market and business closures during the peak of infectious diseases, online shopping has become a vehicle for buyers facing distress.

Hansa Han, a private school teacher, shared his experiences in this matter. She said that genuine local brands deliver honest, high-quality materials, but there are many fake websites on behalf of international brands that are robbing innocent customers who shop online.

The life and career of Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s cricket prodigy
Tumblr media
The life and career of Afghanistan cricketer Rashid Khan has seen the theatrical treatment: The curtains parted one day and there he was.
Among a cast of romantic, colourful cricketers from the country’s fairy tale, stood the teen prodigy, the one player ready-made for the biggest stage.
Online profiles feature Rashid’s One-Day International (ODI) debut at the age of 17, the 25 teams he has represented in various formats, his admiration for Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, that whippy, whirly action, dead-eye wrong ’un, striking ability with the bat, athleticism in the field and the ICC T20 Player of the Decade title, even though he played in only half of it.
But what about the other parts of the man that was known as Rashid Arman, the sixth of 11 brothers? The dreamer who thought he would become the family’s first doctor? The computer science student with beautiful handwriting? The part-time English teacher? The boy who was called “Peshawari” in Afghanistan’s local cricket and “muhajir” (refugee) during his college days in Peshawar, Pakistan?
There are bits that make up his life from Bati Kot to Peshawar and back to Afghanistan’s Jalalabad then Kabul, before his October 2015 ODI debut in Bulawayo – on his way to becoming Rashid Khan, the superstar.
In the life of every cricketer, there are family, coaches and teammates who watch their rise with a mix of emotions: Love, pride, delight, among lashings of envy.
We begin with a story from Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain who was Afghanistan coach from October 2015 to April 2016.
Looking at a list of his squad for a 2016 tour of Sharjah, Haq noted Rashid’s omission.
While Rashid’s performance in Bulawayo had not been earth-shattering, he – out of the roster of leg-spinners Haq had first called out and tried – had impressed.
So much so that Haq ended the arguments with selectors by saying: “Only after Rashid is in the team can you talk to me about other things.”
Six years later, Rashid’s name is first on every Afghanistan team sheet.
These days, Rashid is in Abu Dhabi for the Test series against Zimbabwe.
In the touring party is senior team manager Nazeem Jar Abdulrahimzai, who, in his many past roles in Afghanistan cricket remembers 2012 as the year he first met Rashid.
At a provincial Twenty20 match in Kabul, playing for a club called Kochian, Abdulrahimzai watched an unknown teenager, of small built, batting like a dervish.
“He was opening, he scored 93. When he bowled, no one could read him. It hit the legs, bowled. It hit the pads, LBW. It’s like they couldn’t see,” said Abdulrahimzai. “I had not seen a boy like that.”
Rashid had been spotted, marked for attention and encouragement.
Abdulrahimzai started emailing regional teams, asking them to try Rashid out, pushing those who hesitated.
“Listen, I’m the domestic manager, you take him, give him training and a trial. If you’re happy with him, fine. If you’re not, he can come back.”
Tumblr media
Khan won the ICC T20 Player of the Decade title, even though he played in only half of it
In 2013, Afghanistan set up the Shpageeza Cricket League, which was to become its national T20 competition, one of the many steps Rashid would take on his meandering odyssey.
That year, at Peshawar’s Arbab Niaz Stadium, Islamia College Coach Ali Hoti was approached by a teenager who introduced himself as Rashid Arman and said he wanted to join the college and its famous cricket programme.
Islamia College alumni have represented Pakistan in various sports. Among its celebrated cricketers are Haseeb Ehsan, Yasir Hamid, Wajahatullah Wasti and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
When Hoti and team captain Sajjad Hashmi saw the youngster’s clean-hitting with the bat and his unorthodoxy with the ball, they knew they had spotted a winner.
But at the trials for the university’s sports quota admissions, the young man was missing. He had had to dash over to Afghanistan to play in a tournament.
This to and fro was due to Rashid’s nomadic boyhood, often as part of a business family alongside 10 brothers.
Cricket, the constant
During a period of uncertainty and war, as the family moved between towns on the border, cricket remained the only constant.
Rashid’s skills were homemade, on the concrete strip inside the housing compound meant for parking cars, in taped tennis ball contests with his brothers, especially brother number two, a football fan.
Once, so furious at being done in by Rashid, his brother wrapped extra tape on the tennis ball only for Rashid to get past him again.
The brothers were competitive but protective. Abdulrahimzai remembers one of Rashid’s brothers Jalil, sitting next to him during an early under-19 match, asking: “What will become of this boy? Of Rashid?”
If he had asked Rashid, he would have been shown him the road map.
At Islamia, Hoti said Rashid enrolled for a computer science degree from 2013 and the formalised structure of cricket training and competition.
Team captain Hashmi befriended the quiet, new entrant and saw what Abdulrahimzai had seen: Presence and confidence.
Hashmi, a former opener-wicketkeeper who played domestic cricket in Pakistan, said Rashid immersed himself in cricket, barely spoke and never complained.
“As college captain, players come and argue their case: Why did you bowl me so late, why can’t I bat in this position. With Rashid, nothing,” said Hashmi.
On one occasion, Rashid was dropped due to a dispute in the team and Hashmi went to his home to make peace.
“The next time I went to the ground, he was there. With his cones, doing his training and shuttle runs,” said Hashmi.
“Others might have gone into a sulk, but he knew what he had to do and wasn’t going to stop. Rashid didn’t waste time, he was driven and completely focused. It was like inside, his real talents were hidden, waiting for their time.”
Tumblr media
Rashid’s batting, especially his clean hitting, added to his prowess as a world-class cricketer
Within three years, the world would see those talents.
We must turn to Abdulrahimzai’s Urdu to understand what Rashid’s on-field manner reflected: “Haawi rehna” (domination) and what Abdulrahimzai never saw in him: “Bebasi” (helplessness).
In collegiate and inter-university cricket, Hashmi said Rashid earned the reputation of being the spinner all batsmen thought best to see off.
Hoti is now director of sports at what is now Islamia University and recalls Rashid’s “zabardast” handwriting and the pressure from home to study.
“Rashid was a good student, a thinker. He would try to speak in English, practice it every day, along with his Pashto and Urdu.”
Rashid once said in an interview that he taught English for about six months before cricket took over as he prepared himself for a life beyond college and the towns he called home.
The variations
Rashid’s first cricketing schools – the restrictive and demanding surface of the concrete corridors in his family’s many homes – gave him the fast-arm action to get extra zip on the taped tennis ball.
Flipping the ball out off his fingers – who said wrist-spinners must only use their wrists? – he sent it whirring through the air, rushing the batsmen on concrete, matting, turf, anything.
Where conventional spinners use variations of pace, loop and flight to judge what works best where, Khan’s pace – more than 90km/h (56mph) – is his fundamental staple.
He said he has five grips to choose from during a game… and three googlies.
“Shahid Afridi was my role model while growing up in Afghanistan”. (Rashid Khan) Inspiration of many.❤️@SAfridiOfficial Thank you Lala.#BoomBoom pic.twitter.com/31Y1pyvuwA
— Zain Zahid (@ZainZahid____10) March 9, 2021
To most batsmen, the range is not the issue. Rather, it is the sameness of what everything looks like that leads to befuddlement over what is going to arrive.
As Haq described it, the batsmen’s lack “response time” to react to a ball that not only turns, but turns at speed.
It was not those skills alone that marked Rashid in Haq’s eyes.
On his debut tour in Zimbabwe, Rashid sat out the first ODI. Before the second, Haq told him to bowl at him in the nets.
“If I’m out, you’re in,” he said.
Rashid failed to dismiss his coach but remembers beating him once.
“Even if I had got out to him, it would’ve been fine, that’s the quality of bowler he is. I would have played him, but I wanted to see how he would respond,” Haq said.
What happened before their exchange had revealed more to Rashid.
“When I challenged Rashid, the 17-year-old looked me in the eyes and said ‘haanji, theek hai, aayein net main’ ,” said Haq with a chuckle.
Rashid’s game was always going to be on.

Kantha Work
Tumblr media
WEAVING A STORY: KANTHA EMBROIDERY
Every art form has a story to tell. But none can narrate better than Kantha Embroidery. Known since time immemorial, Kantha work is the best form of personal and artistic expression. What started as a hobby to utilize old and waste fabrics by the rural women of West Bengal became one of the most sought-after crafts of all times. From apparels like sarees, suits, dupattas, shawls, scarves, and skirts to home décor items like the cushion and pillow covers, bed sheets, curtains, tablecloths and mats, rugs, quilts, and blankets, Kantha work creates a perfect blend of the traditional and the contemporary.
The embroidery done on discarded clothes derives its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Kantha’ which means ‘rags’. ‘Kantha’ also means ‘throat’ and thus the embroidery done in earlier times began by telling the mythological tale of Lord Shiva (NeelKanth) consuming poison.
The gorgeous Kantha embroidery involves the simple running stitches done mostly on the cotton and silk fabric with beautiful and colourful motifs of flowers, animals, birds, and basic geometrical shapes. Over time, more elaborate patterns from mythology, folklore, and everyday life scenes developed, which came to be known as ‘Nakshi Kantha’ after the Bengali word ‘naksha,’ which means artistic patterns. The entire piece of fabric is covered with multiple lines of straight, running stitches giving a slightly wrinkled and wavy effect to the cloth. To cater to the modern demands, Kantha embroidery has expanded its reach beyond cotton and silk fabric and is now done on different fabrics like Crepe, Georgette, and Chiffon as well.
Based on the use of the fabric, Kantha is divided into seven different types:
LEP KANTHA
This type of embroidery is done on a number of sari layers, placed on top of each other to be used as a quilt during winters. Simple geometrical designs are made with straight running stitches using coloured threads.
SUJANI KANTHA
This is the most popular and beautiful Kantha. Mostly done on blankets or clothes used for special functions and weddings, sujani Kantha has diverse patterns like the lotus flower, scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, folktales, dancing girls, men riding on horseback, birds, animals, bees, a procession in motion, etc.  A border with geometrical patterns at both ends of the fabric is a major characteristic of sujani kantha.
BAITON KANTHA
This embroidery is done on the fabrics that are used to cover books and other valuables. The motifs of lotus, pots, conch shells, trees, plants, flowers, birds, elephants, chariot, human and divine figures are generally made using red, yellow, green, and blue coloured threads.  It is elaborately patterned with borders of colourful designs. This kantha is often carried while traveling and is presented as gifts to family and friends.
OAAR KANTHA
In this type simple designs with decorative borders are done. They are generally found on pillow and cushion covers. Simple designs like trees, plants, creepers, birds with a decorative border are made around its four sides.
ARSHILATA KANTHA
Arshilata is used as a cover for mirrors, comb, and other toilet accessories. It has a wide border and the central motif is depicted from the scenes of Krishna Leela or Radha-Krishna Raas. The lotus flower, trees, creepers, spirals, inverted triangles, zig-zag lines are some of the other used motifs.
DURJANI/THALIA KANTHA
It is a square piece kantha that is used to cover the wallet. It has a lotus motif in the center with an elaborate border at the sides.
RUMAL KANTHA
This is the smallest among all the kanthas. Like most of the other kanthas, lotus remains the main theme of this embroidery. At times motifs of plants and animals are also embroidered.
This exquisite art of Kantha is passed down through generations and is mostly practiced by the women of West Bengal wherein the intricate stitches are woven using just a needle and thread on the fabric. The flourishing art saw a decline after the partition of India and Pakistan when most of the Bengali artisans migrated to Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). But in recent times, with the efforts of many art connoisseurs, Kantha embroidery is revived and resurrected. To prevent the imitation of this precious embroidery and to preserve the rights of women workers for whom this art has been a major source of living for decades, Nakshi Kantha is awarded Geographical Indication (G.I.) tag in the year 2008.

Reasons behind acid attack still being the most grievous assault
This article has been written by Diya Banerjee, Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA. This article talks about the reasons why acid attacks continue to be the most grievous assault, especially in the South Asian Countries.
Introduction
According to statistics, it was estimated that the percentage of acid attacks in India which were disposed of by the courts was 6.6 in 2016 and 9.9 in 2017 while the number of acid attack cases are nearly 300 per year although survivor advocates say that the actual number of cases, reported and unreported, add up to an average of 1000.
India is the land where goddesses are worshipped through huge and elaborate rituals and celebrations and on the other hand, females in a household are subjected to humiliation, abuse and violence. More so, to add salt to the wound, the women who come forward to raise the curtain to the wrong being done to them, they are counter-questioned ‘what’s the proof?’ by their near and dear ones. Such questions are accusatory in nature because in most cases, there is no solid proof to back the allegations by the aggrieved party and they get labelled as ‘liars’ or worse, get ‘punished’ for actually doing the right thing. And the punishment refers to teaching them a lesson via more forms of abuse, ranging from severe degrees of harassment to fatal cases of acid attacks. Some women are fortunate enough to survive the attacks and most succumb to their burns but are the ones who survive really ‘fortunate’? What happens to the ones who did this? And the most important question, why are the statistics of such violent acts so high in India?
Violence against women : history and now
If you have watched any historical drama or movie, you might have seen how women were always kept behind the purdah and only involved in household chores. During such times, the females of the household were taught to treat their husbands and sons as their lord, protector and superior. All this coupled with a severe lack of education among women gave the recipe of ‘women’s oppression’. Young girls were taught to put their male counterparts above them and young boys were taught how to keep their female counterparts confined to their four household walls.
This kind of education was practically drilled into the young minds and soon took the form of a societal norm and any deviance from them was seen as an act of protest. The treatment after such acts of protest was different for both the genders, men would be scolded and accepted because ‘men are men’ whereas a woman who asked a mere question of why are females subjected to such discrimination would be ostracised from the family or worse, left behind by her husband. This mentality gradually led to what we know as ‘toxic masculinity and mentality’ and the shift toward growing physical and mental violence against women.
Don’t get it wrong, violence against women has existed since time immemorial but in the contemporary society, we can finally track the ups and downs in the number of cases which are reported annually and study the reasons. There are few statistics by the World Health Organization which will help us rule out the most common reasons behind various forms of violence against women.
Violence and abuse in the hands of sexual partners is the major problem in public health (globally) and a violation of women’s rights.
35% of women worldwide have experienced sexual violence/abuse in the hands of their intimate partners or a form of non-partner sexual violence. 30% makes up for violence by intimate partners.
Globally, 38% of women are murdered by their male partners.
Sadly, the contribution of the South Asian countries to the global estimate of violence against women is the highest with 37.7%.
Intimate partner and sexual violence or abuse are mostly crimes perpetrated by men against women.
In 2019, an online poster released by the Womenstats Project showed that in countries like Russia, South Africa, Mexico, South America and Pakistan the violence against women is highly likely to end with their murder with comparatively lesser chances to actually get prosecuted for it.
The forms of violence and abuse can range from abduction to murders but acid attacks still remain the most heinous of the crimes because not only it makes the woman suffer more but also because there are not many specific and stricter laws on this particular issue in many countries.
Reasons for prevalence of acid attacks in Society
In the above stats, it was found that most of the cases of violence against women are perpetrated by their male partners which is also the same for cases of acid violence against women. Most of the reasons why acid attacks are still prevalent in the world are because-
The internalization of the ‘fact’ that women are lower to men and the ‘property’ of men has led to the degradation of women when it comes to respecting their right to personal choices and opinions. 18% of the acid violence survivors admitted that they were punished for voicing out their opinions regarding property disputes and division by their husbands or in-laws because women are ‘supposed’ to make it through whatever is given to them or pre-decided for them.
The Deepika Padukone movie ‘Chhapak’ made headlines because it brought to light how most of the acid attacks are results of ‘rejections’ men faced. 6 out of 10 cases of acid attacks are a result of a woman rebuffing romantic and sexual advances made by a man whom she knows as either a relative or acquaintance. Younger women are more likely to fall victim to such attacks, ages ranging from as young as 10 to 19 years.
Even after the Supreme Court passed an order regarding the regulation of the sale of acid, it can still be bought over-the-counter because most of the acids which are used to disfigure the victims are used for the household purpose of cleaning. Most of the retailers who sell acids slack off from their duty to register the names and address of the buyer after checking for a valid photo identity if they see that the one purchasing is a regular buyer from their shop. A social experiment by Deepika Padukone after the release of her movie ‘Chhapak’ proved that unregulated and over-the-counter sale of acids continues even after legal regulations.
The sick mindset of society is also one of the reasons why such attacks continue to occur. Recently, a TikTok artist with the name Faizal Siddique was suspended from the platform after his video was shown to be ‘glorifying’ acid attack. More sad is the fact that there are women who collaborate on such videos for the sole reason to get more likes and fame.
Another reason for such forms of violence to exist is the lack of education of both men and women regarding mutual respect and human rights, exposure of men to violence since their childhood, exposure to seeing the females in their household getting such treatments from the elder men of the house and unequal gender social norms making it acceptable for men to harm and violate women and that men have entitlement over women.
Acid attacks are mostly ‘crimes of passion’ out of jealousy of a man. It is a crime greatly associated with marriage and relationships, most of them being about a man’s ‘honour’ being demeaned by a woman who refused to marry or settle with him.
Suffering of the victims and survivors
Physical consequences
Describing the physical damage acid causes to a person is not an easy task but everyone knows how it is. Acid can burn through two layers of the skin, into the fat and muscle underneath and if the burns are of higher degree, it can go down to the bone and dissolve the bone itself. And it is not a matter to be taken lightly if bones can be dissolved. Surgeries can only restore the basic ability to hear, see, feel and smell but that is also a maybe. In many cases, the nose and eyes which are rebuilt only act for appearance sake.
Psychological consequences
The psychological effect can be even more painful to bear, not only for the victim but also for the family. The victim lives with the mental image as a disfigured and unacceptable part of the society and the family lives with the regret of being helpless and unable to help improve the situation. The victim develops various mental conditions like depression, insomnia and has nightmares of the attack. Furthermore, she is treated as an ‘alien’ because even in the so-called modern era, physical beauty is way more desired than inner beauty. These psychological and mental disturbances have claimed many innocent lives of young women who had done nothing wrong other than distancing themselves from stalkers and creeps. And those who somehow continue to survive have little to nothing left of their self-respect, self-dignity, self-love, self-acceptance and empowerment.
Social and Economic consequences
The victims who are unmarried are unlikely to ever get married because society is not broad-minded enough to accept a permanently disfigured woman in their family. We refuse to look at their faces because they are not ‘pleasing’ to the eyes.
They are refused jobs because they do not have the personality the employer is looking for and their presence might negatively affect the profit of a business.
What has been done and what more is needed
In Southeast Asia, the three countries where acid attacks have been on the rise are Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Some legislations were brought in order to curb the growing trend of acid attack and punishing those who promote such activities. But even these legislations have not really been fruitful to reduce the numbers. However, they are a positive step forward to a future where acid attacks would no more be a common and unsurprising offence. Nevertheless, this is not the end of the efforts to stop acid violence, a lot more is yet to be done and it has to be seen that laws and rules which are enforced in the future produce results.
Legislations
India
The Supreme Court in 2013 gave the ruling that the sale of acid should be regulated and anyone who wants to buy acid has to provide a valid photo identity card to the retailer and the retailer has to register the name and address of the buyer before handing over the product. Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code lays down the punishment for an acid attack. It involves a minimum of 10 years as punishment which can extend up to life imprisonment along with fine. Section 326B of the Indian Penal Code lays down a minimum of 5 years of imprisonment extending to 7 years with fine in cases of attempted acid throwing.
Pakistan
In Pakistan, Section 336B of Pakistan Penal Code lays down anyone who causes harm by acid attack shall either be imprisoned for not less than 14 years which can extend to life imprisonment along with a fine of one million rupees.
According to the Qisas law under Section 299, the perpetrator could suffer the same fate as the victim, only if the victim or the victim’s guardians choose to go for it. It is more of a tit-for-tat approach to the problem to act as a deterrent by instilling a sense of fear in anyone who thinks to do such a terrible act.
Bangladesh
The Acid Crime Control Act lays down a division of the sentences one is to be awarded with respect to the injuries caused to the victim. If the victim suffers any kind of loss of hearing or sight or damage to her face, breasts or sex organs, the perpetrator will either be imprisoned for life or awarded the death penalty. If any other body part or organ is damaged then imprisonment from 7 to 14 years along with a fine of USD $700. If it was an attempt with no physical or mental harm then imprisonment for 3-7 years with USD $700 as fine. The accomplices to the act will be treated as if they themselves carried out the crime.
The Acid Control Act regulates the sale, storage, trade, misuse and disposal of acid along with carrying out awareness programs and drives to sensitize the society of any new development in the respective law and treatment and rehabilitation of acid attack victims.
Conclusion
Even to this day, the ones who advocate for the equal rights and treatment of women and for the proper punishment for the ones who commit such horrendous crimes against women get called ‘misandrist’. The ones who survived through the horrors of having their bodies disfigured are still told to cover themselves in veils so that others do not get ‘scared’ by the results of a hateful crime. As if the bodily scars which these women will carry for the rest of their lives is not enough, the people who choose to turn a blind eye to their plight scar them with low-self esteem and self-loathing. The legal system of India has also failed the acid attack victims due to their frustratingly slow procedure. In the very beginning of the article, it was mentioned that the percentage of cases disposed of by the courts rose from 6.6. In 2016 to a mere 9.9 in 2017. This does not really inspire confidence and hope now, does it?
The only way to really do something about acid violence is to deal with toxic masculinity and changing the mentality of the society from ‘women are under men’ or ‘not meant for equal treatment to women’ to ‘women are self-sufficient’ and ‘women are equal to their counterparts’. Tackling the issue of toxic masculinity cannot start until and unless victim blaming stops. No one ever asks to be destroyed and abused, so why should we blame them? It is not the job of the judiciary or those in power to teach us what respecting each other means, their job is to give justice and rules we are supposed to follow so that such acts never happen. It is our duty to actually maintain the peace and harmony, law and order at the grassroots because only then right and correct measures can be taken and enforced at the macro level with positive results.
