It is quite sad that so much about the African has been lost overtime. One culture often talked about is the Nok Culture. The Nok culture was one of the earliest known societies of Western Africa. It existed in modern-day Nigeria from around 500 B.C.E. to 200 C.E. The Nok farmed crops and used iron tools. Historians and archaeologists refer to this culture as the Nok culture because artifacts were first discovered near the modern Nigerian town of Nok. Nok culture is known for its unique terracotta sculptures and its early iron working. In Nigeria in 1943, a visitor came to archaeologist Bernard Fagg and drew his attention to some unique-looking artifacts, which Fagg and his colleagues eventually determined belonged to a then-unknown culture now known as the Nok. These artifacts are mostly terracotta sculptures of human heads, human figures, and animals. One of the identifying characteristics of Nok sculptures is the triangular or oval-shaped eyes on human faces. Human figures also often have elaborate hair styles. Typically, humans are depicted seated, with their hands on their knees What other cultures do you know about? #sarautaculture #sarauta #sarautamagazine #sarautamag #sarautanetwork #culturecurators #culturegatekeeper (at Nok, Kaduna, Nigeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCVhkJzl-wz/?igshid=1y0idguo5c74v

A Culture Vulture’s Guide to Marrakech
Upon return from the Sahara, I finally got to really immerse back in Marrakech the getawaygang way. As a bonified culture vulture it is my duty and pleasure to be the one on the ground exploring. This curated guide will cover everything from riads + restos to museums + gardens, shops + hammams. Ha-what? Hold tight, you are about to be clued in as I did it all a few times over - for research of course....
Tumblr media
STAY
A riad is a traditional house or palace with a courtyard and or garden in the center of the property. They are all over Morocco and in some cases hotels.
Riad Nosade
With doors soon to open to the public, I was invited to preview Nosade’s new venture / venue. Best described as a most intimate and familial riad in the medina but just the right amount of distance from the hustle and bustle. I loved the vaulted high ceiling in the room as well as all the golden brown and white carved doorways and columns throughout. The plants were vibrantly thriving while a serene terrace awaits your company be it reading a book and or perhaps some meditation and yoga. An intentional mix of worlds - old and new.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riad Bab 54
Bab is fab! This is more of a boutique hospitality placed in the spice square area of the medina - a stones throw away from a couple popular restaurants I will talk more about later. But back to Bab....on the ground floor there is a pool in the courtyard along with a shaded sitting area and a nice library, the second floor is where the rooms are, and the third is yet another terrific terrace. Breakfast served in the morning comes with the room rate and dinner is upon request at an additional charge. Everything about Bab is delicious and authentic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Source
If you seek refuge away from the madness of the medina The Source is exactly where you need to go. This place welcomes creatives and music lovers particularly with their ultra cool suites - each one different and inspired by there favourite songs and amenities such as their spa that takes wellness to heart, a phenomenal restaurant, a couple refreshing pools, and a recording studio! My Sunday fun day was fulfilled here along with a bbq buffet brunch and a giant duckie to float about while the DJ spun some tunes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riad Marana
Marana is more on the traditional side and a quaint place that’s nice to lay your head when being out on the go for most of the time. When booking, request the Sinibad room, they will happily put the two beds together for a single or couple as they did for me. The bathroom is everything with it’s bold tiles from floor to ceiling. I wish my memory card with the pictures of Marana did not get lost but all the more reason for you to see for your self.
SEE
Majorelle Garden
Yves Saint Laurent is my favourite fashion designer and one of the initial motivations to wanting to come to Marrakech. Yves lived here for some time and his home & garden I wanted to explore for myself, so that I did. As I wandered around, I was imagining how much fun shenanigans took place and and further wishing to have been part of it. The Berber Museum within it is fascinating as well and the cafe is a wanderlusting fashionista’s dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Musee Yves Saint Laurent
Within the last couple years a museum soley dedicated to him and his works was built. No photos are allowed inside but I can assure you that it was awe-inspiring! I happen to go on my birthday so you can imagine how high in the heavens I was between both places. I can go on forever about the colours, the architecture, the garments, accessories, curation, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bahia Palace
Otherwise known as Palais Bahia, is a historic monument dating back to the nineteenth century. I could feel the spirit of the palace  at every turn - brilliant and beautiful - seemingly never ending.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anima Garden
In my opinion, venturing outside Jemaa El Fna is rather important to get to more cultural treasures like André Heller's sculpture garden - acres upon acres of works that are opulent and full of wonder, contemplation, sensuality, joy, healing, and inspiration. My favourites were the Keith Haring and the mirror house. Getting there is convenient with a free shuttle from the Koutoubia. Be sure to stop at the petit museum for more art and enjoy lunch at their garden cafe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
La Maison de la Photographie
A museum showcasing black and white photographs of Morocco’s exceptional diversity and history that were taken by anonymous travelers and famous photographers alike. One can get a good sense of what life was like era by era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RELAX
A hammam is Morrocan’s (and Turks) ritual of cleansing and relaxing both in either a public bath house or a more private experience at local spas and hotels. A traditional full body session involves steaming in an all-marble room, washing with black olive oil soap and getting polished with a special scrub.
The Spa at El Fenn
In my opinion, the creme de la creme among the hammams visited. I was booked for the Full Moroccan Experience, that included all of the above plus a ghassoul clay mask, a massage, and lounge privileges on a daybed beside the private pool. Which all sent me to another luxurious galaxy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maialou
I was told that the best massage in Marrakech was here. And so I thought it best to experience it for myself ;) It was marvelous!
Tumblr media
Kosyspa
For a more affordable hammam, I headed here before departing. My favourite area was their steam quarters prior to the scrub down where I got to zen out and unwind. The view in the pool area offers a different angle of the square to gaze at. And a sunset happy hour at Kosyspa in the terrace is a perfect way to round out the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EAT + DRINK
Tumblr media
NOMAD
As mentioned before ‘nomad’ was undoubtedly the theme of this trip and a meal here is what set the tone. The cuisine is a modern take on traditional Moroccan. The chocolate cake dessert is insanely decadent! Don’t forget to book in advance to guarantee a spot.
Tumblr media
La Famille
Brunch paradise! Upon walking up I was saddened to find out they were booked and this is very typical for them. Luckily, I got on the books for the next day and tasted my way through all the organic farm-to-table inventiveness.
Tumblr media
Le Jardin
Another restaurant by the brains behind Nomad. Green all around from the landscaping to the furniture to the menu. They are consistent that way ;)
Tumblr media
Restaurant at Max & Jan
What does one do when pondering over a pile of clothes purchase? Eat and debate needs versus wants! Max & Jan answered the call on this one and added an eatery to their boutique.
Tumblr media
L‘Adresse
A swanky place with a nice view from the other end of the square.
Tumblr media
A few other places that I enjoyed was:
Zietoun
Try their six salad sampler and the avocado shake!
Zwin’ Zwin’
A hidden gem that has a nice cocktail list such as the grey wine with rose essence. The lamb meatballs paired with a good playlist had me doing a happy seated dance. Say hi to Fatima for me.
Grand Tazi
Authentic Arabic music, candle and belly dancers, oh my!
SHOP
Aside from the countless souks there are a few boutiques that made lasting impressions on me and my wallet.
LRNCE
Another gem lies in Sidi Ghanem outside the medina for all your artful interior decor and accessories. The boutique is their design studio as well so when I was visiting I felt part of the action - got to meet and chat with Laurence and her team.  I walked away with pieces I’ll forever be in love with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max & Jan
Collections ranging from cruise to casual, designers Jan and Maximillian combine with Moroccan heritage and international flare in mind. The boutique offers lifestyle garments, good and gifts. I was invited in to their pop up shop where NY brand, Marrakeshi Life, was sitting pretty.
Tumblr media
Chabi Chic
It’s all in the name. Everything is handmade and painted. I scored a couple sale items that were painted in 14k gold. Worth stopping in even if just to check out their cute paintings and local bath line.
Tumblr media
Boutique at El Fenn
All I saw is red. And I like all I saw. El Fenn does a fine job of curating their shop (and every inch of property) to my heart’s content - a fantastic integration of art, style, luxury, tradition, and contemporary . They are hands down in my top three of favourite places to hang about in Marrakech.
Tumblr media
Looking forward to returning to Maroc life next year!
