Our 8️⃣ year anniversary!

Damn ça se passe vite! In October of 2014 the first ever #LeCypher session took place at Le Belmont. From there we had a now-legendary residency at Bleury Bar À Vinyle, then moved on to Bootlegger Cocktail Bar, then Covid hit, then a brief return stint at Petit Campus, and now the last Wednesday of every month at Dièse Onze.

Every LeCypherX show is totally unique, pushing the boundaries of the future of hip-hop. This is no longer a jam session. LeCypherX is evolving from being known primarily as the hosts of a weekly event to a band that does shows on occasion. As part of Dièse Onze's FUNK•I•ER series, we are presenting 2 sets of original music, a mix of freestyle, tracks you know, and original material. We may have some friends and surprise guests hop up on stage, but this is NOT an open mic or open jam session any longer.

If you are an artist purely looking for a jam session experience, please check out GROWVEMTL on Wednesdays at Turbo Haus and/or Blue Dog Jam at Blue Dog on Thursdays.

I’m beginning to think Montreal is a Dragon Ball city, because people will not stop making references. I ain’t mad though.

Summer is finally here and the overwhelming talents are ready to shine, “loc'd” and loaded:

NoBad Sound Studio has made a name for itself over the years as a cultural center and musical youth sanctuary in the Côte-Des-Neiges area, with members of Kalmunity, Alaiz and Nomadic Massive as mentors and collaborators; now their new tape, NBS ALL STARZ, is out and available for purchase on BandCamp! Among the talented youngsters is Dejazz “Stillz” Libretti, who’s already made considerable noise in the community.

Hip Hop Karaoke MTL has been going through a few growing pains, like anything else, but it’s coming back full force just in time for the summer peak, Saturday July 12th, and it’s rumoured that our friendly neighborhood Microskillz is to make his return to the stage…

Hip Hop Heads Concordia, a student organization at Concordia University, is stirring things up in the scene, having only been launched early December. Their last event, “Cypher Brew”, was captured and beautifully immortalized by photographer/filmographer Matthew Thomas Labelle, who is also known for his work on Apartment 6, as well as collaborations with PACESIX and Pop Up Shop Montreal.

Speaking of Nomadic Massive, they made it to the Top 5 in the category of “Best Hip Hop Act” in CultMTL’s “Best of MTL 2014”, and if you don’t know who they are, I can’t really help you. You’ve certainly spotted one of its members, a dude with glorious wool-hair who goes by the name of Waahli (a.k.a. Wyzah); if not, you’s a cavedweller.

Lastly, things are heating up on the scene, and I don’t just mean the weather (… but THANK GOD for this sun). ZéFire is bringing crooning back with an urban twist on F.I.R.E., a compilation of his take on MTL beats (with names such as Kaytranada and High Klassified on the bill), but don’t take my word for it; listen to his tracks on SoundCloud!

I’m starting to realize more and more that I absolutely do not remember the first time I met my would-be wives (as per my last post). As one of the few QWOC rappers in MTL, Hua Li (civilian name Peggy Hogan) has become a name-stay in the rap game, as well as the academic game. A McGill brain by day, teaching vocals and music, speaking at panels, writing about the abysmally low bar of white feminism and male accomplishment; by night, a sultry songstress with bars to match, gracing any lineup she appears on. On April 13th, Hua Li will present her multimedia project at the MAI. “Dynasty is a live multimedia experience accompanying her debut studio album of the same name. Supported by video projections by Tyler Reekie, Dynasty tells of Hua Li’s journey as a first-generation Chinese-Canadian and deals with topics like deceitful love, family power dynamics, and serious booty-shaking”. Be sure to mark it down in your calendar, and while your at it, you can vote for her in CultMTL’s Best of 2018 poll for Best Hip-Hop act (that is, if you haven’t already voted for Strange Froots you could also vote us for Best Band instead though)!
