With my postdoctoral fellowship coming to an end, I’ve been on a hunt to land one of the most coveted positions in the pharmaceutical industry. I’ve faced some pretty bad imposter syndrome - and I am not one to usually let it consume me. This time though, it hit different. However, I’m grateful for my mentors in this industry, family, and friends, who have held me up the past few months, when I would break down. Today, it's back to Cuba for a boat ride around the Bay Of Gibara. We arrived at the dock in the morning after breakfast expecting a boat like the one in the first picture but after we had waited for a while a tiny boat with an outboard motor showed up and we all had to balance ourselves along a thin and creaky wooden jetty to climb into this boat which had us all scared to death. We figured that that it could capsize at any moment. Never were so many on such a tiny boat! But off we went and I'm happy to say we did not sink or capsize and we lived to show the pictures. Cuba would not be Cuba, if it were not for it’s own son, Fidel Castro, and surrogate son, Che Guevara. Castro, a Cuban lawyer, and firm believer in Marxists and Communistic values, was not only one of the longest-serving heads of state, but one of few to stand strong against the US. He successfully overthrew Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, during the Cuban Revolution, bringing egalitarian principles to Cuba : 🇨🇺 Reinstating the Cuban constitution 🇨🇺 Reforming rights to land ownership 🇨🇺 Allowing sugar workers the right to receive about 55% of company profits Interestingly enough, his revolutionary ideals, did not just stop in Cuba. He believed in spreading revolution in many countries - going as far as Africa and even the Middle East. Yet, he wasn’t alone. A powerful Marxist revolutionary himself, and the brainchild behind a well known manual on guerrilla warfare, Che Guevara is slated in Cuban history. He not only helped Castro wage the Cuban Revolution…but, successfully win. An Argentinian physician by trade, Guevara had traveled far and wide from Central and South America to Africa, helping oppressed civilians revolt against repressive governments. If there was ever a face synonymous to revolution and civil liberties, it would be Che. …………………………… Castro was famed for a speech entitled “History Will Absolve Me.” Rest assured, he was right.
