"I know that, according to your theory, the other end of this little string wrapped around my finger belongs to you," Gigi said. She flexed the offending finger, willing it to show more than the small snippet she was able to see.
The red had grown more vibrant over the years, fading in and out as the seasons passed and she grew older. With no rhyme or reason, it had a life of its own. The scarlet red a new addition to the hues it had embodied over the years.
Gigi gave Crystal an impatient look.
"Well, it's just a theory..." Crystal tried to backtrack, the cutting eyes boring into her, making her voice crack. "You say how this string changes colour, so I was thinking it might have something to do with me moving back here."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"Remember back when we were kids? You told me about this string around your finger, and I said that I couldn't see it. But you insisted it grew brighter every day, even if nobody else could see it."
"Oh."
Gigi bit her own cheek as she turned her head away from Crystal. There were implications at Crystal's words, and she wasn't about to think about those right now.
It must be a coincidence that the string changed whenever Crystal was around and whenever she left. A coincidence Gigi had been painfully aware of for years, one she had been purposefully suppressing for as long as she could remember.
