"To date, nearly 25,000 crocheters ('reefers') have created a worldwide archipelago of more than 50 reefs — both a paean to and a plea for these ecosystems, rainforests of the sea, which are threatened by climate change. The project also explores mathematical themes, since many living reef organisms biologically approximate the quirky curvature of hyperbolic geometry."
I saw the show at MAD in NYC in 2016 and was completely blown away. Currently it's in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Museum of Art, through January 26th, 2025. Road trip, anyone?

Artist Research:
Vanessa Barragão is a Portuguese Artist who uses crocheting, felt needling and a range of techniques to create these tapestries inspired by coral reefs and oceans aswell as the natural world. She creates an amazing array of textures and different types of movement in her pieces to convey the coral reefs and natural landscapes.

I like the way that she conveys movement and different elements using wool and felt.I am interested in crocheting and knitting so I would like to perhaps incorporate this into my project.

Honestly all other reasons aside I would like to live near my parents just so I can help motivate my extremely ADHD mother through her incredible backlog of spectacular craft projects.

"The forms we create in crochet are manifestations of hyperbolic geometry, an alternative to the typically taught Euclidean variety. The frilling surfaces of these crochet reefs mimic the structures made by living reef organisms such corals, kelps, sea sponges and nudibranchs, all of which are biological incarnations of hyperbolic space." "just as living reefs are created by the efforts of billions of tiny coral polyps working together, so the Crochet Coral Reef is constructed by communities, thousands of people working together."

Indonesian fiber artist Mulyana has taken over the Fisher Museum of Art with colorful, hand-knitted and crocheted aquatic life.
With the duality of life and death as a recurring theme, Mulyana crafts a tactile, mystical world in which fish, whales, and coral reefs coexist with sea monsters and slow states of decay.
Read Renée Reizman’s review of Mulyana: Modular Utopia.

🚨[FREE BABY SEASHELL PATTERN!]🚨 Once upon a time, in the deep blue ocean, there was a tiny Baby Seashell. She lived among the mermaids 🧜🏻‍♀️ crabs 🦀 and octopuses 🐙 in a beautiful underwater world 🌊 The Baby Seashell loved to play hide-and-seek with her octopus friends and listen to the beautiful songs 🎶 of the mermaids. She would also often explore the nearby coral reefs 🪸 marveling at the vibrant colors and the exotic sea creatures that called it home. Despite being small, the Baby Seashell had a big heart ❤️ and always looked out for her friends, whether it was helping a crab mend a broken shell or sharing a tasty seaweed snack with the mermaids. Life was full of adventure and wonder in the deep ocean, and the Baby Seashell couldn't wait to see what each new day would bring! 🥰 Baby Seashell is a FREE addition to my Kawaii Ocean Minis crochet pattern that includes Mermaid, Triton, Octopus, Hermit Crab and Seahorse and is available here -> https://etsy.me/41Oz4GU 😊 FREE Crochet pattern for amigurumi Baby Seashell is available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Danish, browse through the gallery to see all of these languages! 🤗 Happy crocheting and have a wonderful weekend, dear friends! 💛💙

I bought too many shine powders and got choice paralysis.
All I have learned is that I am dyeing most of those doll black instead of teal because the shine powders look terrible on light colors.
Tumblr media
Also I still hate how Coral Reef designed the wrists.
My hand slipped, my finger got chopped open by the s-hook.
The s-hook got lodged exactly in the middle of the forearm piece and it took me forever to fish it back out because I needed to twist it to come out the slot.
My sister gave me one of her crochet hooks and it was just the right size to twist the S-hook back out.
I am like 50% tempted to just drill the wrist hole bigger since the design just doesn't work in a nice way, but I might experiment with other s-hooks first.

Now to clean off the test paint on the legs and the blood spot.

[FREAYA] -> Introduction
Tumblr media
-> Such a new and exciting place! You're absolutely BEAMING to some new faces! All of the ones at the BEACH where you face is are same old same old! Your name is FREAYA HELIAN and you're one crafty little crab! -> You're an enjoying of FIBER ARTS such as CROCHET, KNITTING and SEWING. You've ALWAYS got some new little project on your hands, you simply HATE having nothing to do! You need to work! You need to create! You also run a cute little ONLINE SHOP that sells a lot of your handicraft creations! You're also interested in EXPLORING CORAL REEFS with your lusus. You've always had a love for those pretty little underwater plants! You even have some in your CASTLE HIVE. -> You always try to have a GOOD JUDGEMENT OF CHARACTER, not wanting to accidentally associate yourself with the worst of the worst. You like to believe you can READ PEOPLE fairly well, but sometimes you aren't the best at it. But it's okay! Everyone makes mistakes, something you live by to this very night. You yourself try to be as CARING and COMPASSIONATE as possible, but sometimes it may come off as a little CONDESCENDING, which is not at all what you want when people interact with you. And you always try to do what YOU personally believe is right, even if others don't see it the same way as well. Everyone has their own version of "right" and "wrong", something you've learned to get accustomed to. -> You hate people who assume, it makes an ass out of me and you y'know! Several people have made assumptions about you for several things. Two things being your HEIGHT and APPEARANCE. You're so sick and tired of people not taking you seriously because of that. Oh, and mistaking you for a boy. You think you look pretty feminine! You kinda wish people listened to you more often... [Freaya is open for asks/judgements!] [Freaya goes by SHE/HER] [Design was made by @owormy <3 / Sprites were made by @ketchfantrolls <3]

I'm knitting again, and now I sorta realise that Clavis could enjoy crocheting... or the possibilities it offers.
Freehand crocheting that looks sorta like a coral reef? But it's a sweater? And for some reason he worked with four different threads at once?
Granny squares with the most outrageous colour combinations? Weird irregular patterns within each square?
I'm really curious what sort of blanket he'd make...
