You leaned your elbows over the paddock fencing, watching the man in the saddle as he directed the horse to walk circles around a pair of ex-beer barrels. You glanced at the folded bills in between your fingers, and then back up at the man. He'd been at it for about an hour, you'd been watching him from the porch of your house, but it still made very little sense to you. It made even less sense with how much you were paying him. Or, how much your brother was paying him.
The man noticed you staring, as you'd been there for several minutes already, and he tugged on the reigns, directing the horse away from the barrels as he approached you.
"Everythin' alright, miss?" He asked, the upper half of his face shadowed by the brim of a hat, but it didn't hide his gaze. He glanced back at the house, and then to you once more, squinting slightly. "You hurt, or-?"
"No, no, I'm not hurt. I just... What is it you're doin', exactly, Mister Mckinney?" You asked, motioning towards the horse, who shifted her head away at your movement.
"I'm trainin'er. You... You own a ranch, and you don't know what horse trainin' is?" He let out a quiet laugh, and you rolled your eyes with a scoff.
"I don't own the ranch. My brother does. I'm just stickin' around for a bit before I settle down. Watchin' the dogs and keepin' the house tidy while he's gone. Ain't the horse s'posed to come trained?" You asked, knitting your eyebrows in confusion.
"No, uh.. No, they don't all come trained," he chuckled. "I'm just helpin'er temperament. Gettin'er used to being ridden. You ever rode one before?"
"A horse?"
"Yeah...? Yeah, a- a horse," he clarified, not sure what else you'd be talking about.
"No."
"You wanna?" You narrowed your eyes, and he reached his hand down. He motioned towards the paddock fence. "Climb on up. I'll show ya. Just be real gentle, she won't hurt ya if yer easy on'er," he directed.
"I'm... not sure," you released a nervous laugh, but he shrugged.
"Why not? I'm right here. I ain't gonna let you fall 'r nothin'," he reassured, and you pursed your lips, contemplating the idea. After a moment, you tucked the money into your pocket and lodged your boot on the first wood level of the fence, climbing onto it. You took the man's hand, and he placed his other on your waist, helping you onto the horse. "Easy now, that's it," he hummed, doing his best to steady your wobbly motions.
He moved off the saddle slightly, giving you room to sit as you held onto a small handle-like wooden sculpture jutting out from the saddle. His hand was still on your hip, but he removed it once you seemed steady enough.
"See? You got it. Practic'ly a natural," he teased, and you looked down, realizing how high up you were. It was a little uncomfortable, but not terrible.
"That's it? What's all the talk 'bout then? Don't seem that special," you remarked, and he chuckled.
"Toss your leg over," he directed, and you did as he asked. He shifted closer to you, pressing his chest against your back and his arms against yours, the reigns still in his hands. "I'll go slow, don't freak out," he hummed, noticeably close to your ear, and you gave a slow nod.
His boots gently hit the horse's sides, and there was a bit of a jump as the horse moved into motion, leading you to nervously grasp the handle in front of you and lean forward. He leaned forward too, keeping his chest against you as you awkwardly bumped with the horse's every step.
"Surprised your brother owns a ranch and you ain't ever ridden a horse before. You lived here long?" He asked, and you shrugged.
"Not very. Traveled with a group for a while. Didn't end up workin' out. Came back here. Parents owned this old place and I just... never really got into it, I s'pose. Brother's always been for it. Guess he got the cowboy trait," you explained, your speech occasionally broken up by bumps in the horse's steps.
"Nah, I think you got some of it in'ya. You got good rhythm," he complimented, though you didn't quite understand what he meant. He tugged the horse to a stop, setting down the reigns momentarily and instead placing his hands on your arms, earning a shift from you. "Hold onto her mane, right there. Might be more comfortable. Real tight, it ain't gon' hurt her. You got it," he encouraged, guiding your hands to the closest section of a black mane, your wrists resting on the brown fur of the creature. "Ready?"
"Sure," you replied, and he kicked her back into motion, causing your body to jolt forward slightly, but once you found the 'rhythm' he spoke of, the positioning was slightly more comfortable. Sure, you could also feel his hips against yours with every single step, but were you really complaining? No.
"Better?" He asked, leaning down slightly once more; he wasn't as close as before, but you were still acutely aware of his body against yours. "You're doin' good for a beginner."
"Yeah, better," you replied, a small smile on your face at his praise. He guided the horse around the length of the perimeter, and when he reached roughly the same spot where he'd originally picked you up, he pulled her to a stop. You sat up, looking back at him. "Why'd you stop?"
"Well, I gotta get back to trainin', sweetheart. I ain't gettin' paid for nothin'," he chuckled, smiling innocently at the small frown on your face. "What're you poutin' for?"
"Can't we do one more lap? It was kinda relaxing," you requested, shrugging.
He narrowed his eyes, seeming rather confused at the question. "Well, you can always do it on yer own time. It is your horse, after all. I was just tryin' be a gentleman. You looked lonely," he answered.
"I was," you mumbled, looking back at the house. He furrowed his brows at the comment, but you continued speaking before he replied. "I ain't gonna have time to learn myself. I'll pay you."
"Oh, no, you ain't gotta do that. I- Are you askin' me to teach you, darlin?" He asked, and you gave a small nod, bringing a slight smile to his face. "That's awfully sweet of ya, but I ain't sure how your brother'd feel 'bout me takin' his little sister out on horseback. If you got hurt, I wouldn't-"
"What he doesn't know won't hurt him," you cut off, and the cowboy left his mouth slightly open, giving you an almost frustrated glare. You sat up all the way and turned back to him, reaching for his chin with your hand, but he stopped you before you could pull him into a kiss.
"Sweetheart, this really ain't a good idea. I- I don't mean to be rude, you're a fine lookin' lady, but I really do respect yer brother, and-"
"Just kiss me," you grumbled, pulling him closer again, and this time he didn't resist your tug. You leaned towards him until your lips were on his, and you closed your eyes, unable to keep yourself from smiling as you felt a hand on your hip.
After a moment, he pulled away, blinking at you with an almost empty gaze. You held it, remaining silent as he processed the interaction. And then he tugged you closer and kissed you again, gently squeezing your waist. He held it for much longer this time, to the extent where you had to be the one to break it off, catching your breath as he chuckled. "I take it you're wantin' more?"
"Preferably," you replied, and the brunette smiled. He placed his other hand on your waist and guided your leg back over the saddle, helping you off of the horse as your boots hit the dirt. You looked up at him with a frown, but he shook his head.
"Relax, I ain't one to leave a lady unsatisfied," he reassured. His fingers snuck under his hat and he removed it, setting it on your head instead. "Run along inside, I'll get this gal back in 'er stable and we can... talk about payment options," he teased. Your frown turned into a smirk as you climbed back over the paddock fence, and he dipped his head, shifting back onto the main seat of the saddle as he guided the horse towards the gate.
After watching him for a moment longer, you turned around and headed back into the house, a satisfied grin on your face. Sure, you didn't know how to ride horses, but you did know how to ride cowboys. Maybe it was time for him to learn a thing or two.

Figure You Out (Lelad McKinney x Fem!Reader)
Leland McKinney x Fem!Reader
A/N- HAPPY HALLOWEEN. Kinda short cause I wanted to get this idea out quickly. Might make a part two that’s a bit smutty.  I was kind of underwhelmed with the last fic I wrote about him ngl, can definitely tell I got lazy towards the end. This is to make up for it. Fic was inspired by the song Figure You Out by Viola.
-------------------------------------------
Concept- Leland McKinney, your oldest and closest best friend, is throwing a bonfire party and your parents decide to set you up with a family friend. They're not too fond of you going to a party alone. Hoping this friend will keep you from thinking about Leland, you agree. Things go amiss however, when Leland starts to act a little defensive over you. It doesn't help that he seems to know every little thing about you and uses it to outshine your plus one. COMPLETELY FLUFFY, no NSFW
Content- Jealous Leland McKinney, Fluff, Best friends to Lovers, Childhood friends, mild violence warning I guess... and drinking.
--------------------------------------------
The annual halloween bonfire... something you looked forward to every year, however this year was particularly special to you. Before, you had always gone stag, clinging to Leland like a lost puppy. Not that he minded, you knew he enjoyed your company. You didn't entirely enjoy being viewed as little more than Leland's overly attached friend however.
The brunette had always been polite about it, but you still felt a bit like a burden past a point. The man you were attending with had agreed to meet you there, since you were already at Leland's from the day previously. It wasn't uncommon for you to fall asleep on his couch, often having to retreat from your dorm after your roommate and her partner grew particularly... restless... in the night. It was not something you'd want to be around.
Now you stood studying the few costume choices you'd managed to knab before slipping out of your dorm last night, as Leland laid on the bed beside you on his back reading one of the books you had recommended to him.
This was a common practice between the two of you, often feeling close enough to kind of exist in your own space while enjoying each other's companies. The brunette was currently dressed like a cowboy, his little blue bandana tied loosely around his neck and his brown cowboy hat hanging off his head.
You sighed, shaking your head, as you discarded the shirt you were currently wearing
"No, that's absolutely not going to work. What if it gets too hot? Or too cold?"
Despite knowing you're talking more to yourself than him, Leland speaks, never looking up from his book.
"What're you struggling with this time? I'm sure whatever you pick will be fine."
You rolled your eyes in response, waving a dismissive hand, as you studied a brown
sweater that was currently under his leg. You should have known better than to place the clothes on Leland's bed, knowing the man had no awareness of his surroundings.
"I'm not going for fine Leland. One wrong choice, and I'll either be freezing or sweating my ass off all night. Everyone's got such cool costumes already, I don't want to pick the wrong thing and look boring."
Leland shifts on the bed slightly, realizing his concentration on the book would be nonexistent as long as he tried to carry a conversation with you. He closed the book, setting it down. When his eyes glance up, his cheeks flush, and he quickly tries to hide it, moving off of the brown sweater.
It wasn't like him seeing you shirtless was anything new, you had changed in front of each other many times. Recently however, something did feel a bit different. Perhaps it was just another inevitable from getting older.
Leland exhaled quietly, rubbing the back of his neck. He examined the clothes laid out, avoiding meeting your gaze. Asking him meant you were desperate. Not that Leland had no fashion sense. There had been several times where the man had shown up to an event or function and had you raising an eyebrow in question however.
You're surprised when he picks up a long black lace dress. The material was thin enough to keep you from overheating but covering enough to be comfortable and warm.
"You've been really into vampires recently. Just throw this on and put on some like dark make up. And you have a pair of shorts you can easily slip on in their place later if you get too uncomfortable."
You stared blankly at Leland for a moment, carefully picking up the dress. You had been staring at the garments for well over ten minutes struggling to find the right combination, and here Leland had managed to do it in a matter of seconds.
"When did you learn how to coordinate outfits?"
"When you moved in for three years and policed everything I wore," Leland teased back, grabbing his book once again and settling on a chair in the corner of the room instead. "Also this book... aren't vampires supposed to be like... evil? This book is so dumb."
"Then why do you keep reading it?" You smirked, putting your arm through the sleeves of the dress Leland had picked, tying it on.
"Because I can't put it down."
"Because it's good."
"No because it's like... a terrible accident. You can't take your eyes away no matter how disastrous it may be."
"You like it."
Leland scoffed, no longer replying, however based on the way his eyes ran across the pages and the focus he had, he was rather enthralled. He just didn't want to admit he was enjoying something so absurd. You had thumbed through and analyzed the book many times, the margins filled to the brim. Leland liked to comment about them when he read the copy you leant him.
You finished getting dressed rather quickly, and Leland seemed disappointed to no longer be able to read the book, instead focusing on bonfire party prep.
"So... Danny's bringing the beer, Connie said she's got grass covered. Julie is bringing marshmallows. You've got cups laid out and all the expensive breakables put away... right? We don't need another incident like last time."
Leland let out a slightly nervous laugh, rubbing the back of his neck at the memory. Perhaps indoor football hadn't been the best of ideas.
"And you said you had someone new coming... is he...cool?"
You nodded, trying to recall the small bit you knew about the guy. Truth be told you remembered little other than he was rather handsome. You started setting out the small snacks you and Leland had prepared the day before.
"He's not gonna snitch over a few beers if that's what you're asking. He probably won't smoke though."
Leland seemed to bounce on the balls of his feet for a moment, shoving his hands in the pocket of his jeans. His shoulders looked a little tense, as he stared at the floor of the kitchen for a few moments. His mouth opened and closed several times, words not falling out. You were too focused on the small bowls being perfectly spaced out to really notice. Finally he speaks, and you're reminded of his presence.
"So... are you two like a thing?"
You were surprised, as you thought. You weren't entirely sure honestly... you hadn't had the talk and had only been out with the man twice. Neither felt particularly... romantic but it wasn't like there wasn't anything there.
"I'm... not sure honestly. I am a little fond of him and I think he's fond of me, but he hasn't really asked me to be his girl."
Leland nodded softly, feigning a look of disinterest, as he smiled softly, looking up from the ground.
"Just wondering if he's going to be the one you follow around like a lost puppy tonight instead of me," he teased.
You scoffed, crossing your arms.
"You enjoy the attention," you replied, not knowing just how true those words rang. Especially if it was from you.
Before the conversation could carry on for too long, a knock erupted at the door. No surprise Julie was the first to show. Her being early was nothing new. The others weren't too far behind her and it felt like in the blink of an eye you were in Leland's backyard, sitting beside him and your plus one, sharing a laugh with a few of your friends.
You had introduced James to everyone, and after sitting down, his hand never left the small of your back. You didn't seem to mind or notice, as Leland glared daggers at the man.
James had already established himself as an outsider by not showing up in a costume.
"You didn't tell me it was a costume party," he whispered upon arriving, being the only one that wasn't dressed up. You absolutely had though, you remember it vividly. It had been when you extended the invitation after your second outing together at the drive in.
"I absolutely did, the same night I invited you. It was right after watching Blood Mania at the drive in," you insisted.
James didn't seem to remember that either, which only further drove your frustration.
"I hung out with her the night after, and she told me everything. I don't think she'd forget to mention the party was a costume one," Leland had insisted.
Since then, the two had an unspoken tension that continued to build between them. Leland had never been all that great at hiding how he felt when it came to his annoyance. Tonight was no exception.
You hadn't really paid too much attention, until you had mentioned wanting a drink. When James returned, convinced he knew what drink you wanted before you could even tell him, things started to go a little amiss. Everyone seemed to understand what was going on, either laughing or rolling their eyes, except you.
"She isn't a huge fan of beer. If you actually listened to her, you'd know she likes lemonade."
"What is that supposed to mean? She's barely spoken two words tonight."
"Maybe she just doesn't have anything to say to you, she never seems to have that problem with me. That could be because I actually let her talk."
You were a little surprised at how quickly the hostility seemed to rise. You took the beer from James, stepping in front of him and shooting Leland a look. You then turned to James resting your hand on his chest.
"Hey... it's the thought that counts. I'm not entirely talkative with anyone," you attempted to diffuse, guiding the man back to the log you two had been sitting on. This time however, he sat between you and Leland, which seemed to really get under the brunette's skin. What really had Leland gritting his teeth however was when James casually threw his arm around your shoulders.
You shifted a little, the weight being a bit uncomfortable. You had never been a fan of people touching you without warning, however after the whole debacle you didn't want the man to think it was because something was going on between you and Leland.
Once again, Leland seemed to have other plans.
"A little word of advice James, if you have any respect for you, you'd ask before touching her in any way. She can't stand when people invade her personal space without a warning."
James glared at Leland once again, as you sighed, with your cheeks flushed.
"Do you have a problem buddy? I'm sure she can speak for herself. You just seem to have all the fucking answers tonight don't you?"
"As a matter of fact I do. And anyone who has a moment of her time should count themselves lucky. But you just don't seem to care. Did you even notice how she tensed up the second your arm touched her? Or the face she makes every time she takes a sip of that beer?"
James rolled his eyes, taking his arm off of you and glancing between you and Leland.
"Is there something going on here that I'm unaware of? Golden boy over here sure seems to know a lot about you. And you haven't spoken not a damned word."
"Don't talk to her that way or even make such accusations. If you actually knew her you wouldn't even question her loyalty like that."
"If she has a problem with the way I'm talking I'm sure she's more than capable of speaking for herself. God what are you, her knight in shining armor?"
You stood up, chewing your bottom lip as you rested your hand on James's shoulder.
"Hey, calm down okay? Leland doesn't mean anything by it... I just didn't want to upset you is all. Leland knows I'm not going to say something."
"So you need someone else to speak for you? That's fuckin rich. Golden boy over here's your little bitch is that it?"
Before you can reply, Leland's fist is raised, colliding into the man's nose. That's when the other's jump up, and everything is happening in slow motion for you. James is in the group holding his nose as blood slowly slips down. Leland is shaking his fist, glaring down at the man. Danny is beside him, trying to get him to calm down. Connie is reluctantly helping James up, and Julie and Ana are by your side in an instant.
"Dammit Lee, was that really necessary? Oh my god, you better hope he doesn't report that to the police," Connie freaked, tilting the man's head back.
"He probably won't even remember to," Leland remarked.
Connie slowly stood up, handing Danny her keys.
"Can you drive James home please and like... try to calm him down. You're the strongest out of all of us aside from maybe Leland, and I don't think having him bring James home is a good idea."
Danny didn't even attempt to argue, helping the man up off the ground. He was probably the only thing keeping James from lunging at Leland, shouting curses the entire way out. Connie approached Leland, reaching a hand out hesitantly, but he quickly turned away heading inside.
You scratched the back of your neck, suddenly feeling very heavy. Connie and Julie both turned to you, soft looks on their faces. Everything had escalated so quickly, you almost had whiplash. You'd never seen Leland act so brashly. Part of you also felt guilty for being the one to bring James over.
"What the hell was that about?"
Julie and Connie looked at each other for a moment, seeming to have some sort of conversation you were not a part of.
"Are you serious...?" Julie asked quietly, chewing her bottom lip.
Connie shifted a little, aimlessly kicking the dirt, as she shoved her hands in the pockets of her shorts. Her eyes softened, as she tilted her head.
"You really can't tell?"
"Tell what?"
You were now more confused than before, glancing around. Had James done something you didn't pick up on? Did they all know things about him you didn't? Embarrassment crept up your cheeks at the thought of being out of the loop and inviting him here.
Julie let out a humorless laugh, her hand returning to her side. She glanced at Connie once more who only nodded in response.
"Come on, you gotta know Leland is crazy about you."
Your eyes widened a little, heart skipping a beat, as your grip tightened around the beer can you had been given earlier. You couldn't help but let out a nervous laugh in response, shaking your head at Julie.
"What? No... he's just... like that because we've known each other for so long."
"Leland doesn't get that defensive over us, hell I bet he couldn't even remember Connie's favorite color. He knows everything about you. Did you not see the way he stared at James?"
You rub your arm slightly, trying to recall all the times alone with Leland. Part of you was curious as to how they jumped to that conclusion. Another part of you wondered how you had been so oblivious to it.
"You need to talk to him, get this sorted out tonight, so that something like this doesn't happen again," Julie said quietly.
Connie nodded her head in agreement, stepping aside to allow you passage inside.
You remained unconvinced, however you did feel the need to check on Leland. Strangely, despite James being the one who was punched, you couldn't bring yourself to worry about anything but Leland.
It doesn't take you long to find him, wrapping his hand with some gauze, as his back is leaned up against the bathroom sink. Leland doesn't notice you at first, muttering things quietly to himself. You can't quite make out what, his voice barely above a whisper, as he continues to speak through his winces.
"So stupid...ruined your chances... Fucking prick."
Despite the door being wide open, you gently knock on it regardless, catching his attention. The brunette looks up at you with wide eyes and pink cheeks, dropping the gauze.
"Hi... Uh you startled me. I'm so sorry-"
You cut him off, taking the gauze and unwrapping it to study his fist. The dark red marks make you wince slightly. You shake your head, starting to redo his work a little more neatly.
"You have nothing to apologize for... If I had just spoken up he would-"
"You can't seriously be blaming yourself for this? If anything that asshole had it coming. What could you possibly even see in him?"
You continued to work on the gauze, careful not to wrap it too tightly. Leland's hands felt warm against your own. You couldn't see that he was staring rather intently at you, his expression gentle.
"He wasn't like that when we hung out I... I'm not sure what got into him. I guess he got jealous of you which is ridiculous. I guess I should have told him a bit more, maybe I didn't mention that it was a costume party. Fuck..." you rambled on, chewing your bottom lip nervously. Your heart stops however, when Leland's uninjured hand gently touches your cheek.
"Hey, this isn't on you. This is... this is on me. I should have said something a long time ago. I'm crazy about you. I've been crazy about you since we started high school together. You're just so... perfect to me, and to see you with someone like that... someone who doesn't value you just... you deserve better. I'm sorry if you think I acted irrationally tonight, and it's not like I care if you date someone. I mean I do, but I'd respect what you wanted you know? I just... care about someone treating you right."
You were a little surprised at how quickly the words fell out, staring at Leland blankly for a minute. He refused to meet your guys, eyes trained on the floor, and his cheeks somehow seemed more pinker than when you had first walked in. You couldn't help but laugh, shaking your head.
"You fucker... now you say something? I spent so long trying to convince myself... convinced that you... and this is what it takes? Why didn't you ever ask me out?"
"Why do you think so? I was convinced you'd never see me that way... scared it would make our friendship weird. Having you as a friend was more important to me than any potential possibility of more. You aren't exactly easy to read yourself. I've seen how you are with guys you're interested in."
You rolled your eyes, no longer wrapping his hand up, as you chewed your bottom lip. Unbelievable.
"Are you serious? What guys Leland? I followed you around like a lost puppy everywhere, hoping you'd notice me, only to realize how pathetic I was being."
Leland shook his head, leaning off of the sink. He was now towering over you a little with an unreadable expression. His eyes were glassy, as he gently touched your face with his uninjured hand.
"You're not pathetic. You have never been pathetic. I didn't think... I never questioned why you followed me around. It was just kind of our thing. But you... you are so amazing. I'm sorry it took me so long to tell you."
You stared up at him, blinking. You weren't quite sure what to say, his gaze making you feel warm inside, as his eyes flicked from your lips and back. You can't help but instinctually lean closer, touching his hand with the same gentleness he approached you with.
"Can I kiss you?"
His voice is so quiet you almost don't hear, convinced it's all in your head. When you nod slowly however, his eyelids flutter shut, and his lips touch yours with a careful tenderness. You practically melt against him, all your feelings slipping away. The nervousness, the annoyance, and the frustration all poured into his lips.
Your arms snaked around his neck, as you pulled him closer. Suddenly you felt like you couldn't get close enough, your heart racing. The only reason he pulled away was to catch his breath, as he rested his forehead carefully against yours.
"Wow..."
Leland exhaled quietly, letting out a nervous laugh. Then his hand pressed a little more into your cheek, almost as if to assure himself this was real. You were in his arms and he had just kissed him. Something he had only ever fantasized about doing.
You smiled up at him coyly, before leaning up for another taste. Leland's lips were soft, and you never wanted to forget how they felt against your own. Wrapped up in the bathroom together, you two were in your own little world. James, the bonfire, and your friends all faded away like a blur, nonexistent.

@fcused said: kissing at a crowded party. / well what if we DID kiss at a party once.
it's the back of someone's house party on halloween, where he finds connie. she's leaned against the stair banister with her drink, under the dimly-glowing strings of jack-o-lantern lights. he takes pause, and gives her a pointed up and down look — seeing as they're both wearing a flavour of old west costume. although obviously, she was doing the look more service.
❝ howdy, wallflower, ❞ leland chimes, tipping his matching cowboy hat to her with a sparkling grin, and a wink; ❝ i'm afraid there ain't enough room in this party for the both of us, ❞ he of course, punches up his own accent a few levels for effect, and clearly all-too-proud of his stupid joke. her arms-crossed-eyeroll-combination is nearly audible, but she seems to decide she's not immediately sick of his company, just yet. dropping the cartoon-cowboy tone, his smile levels out into something more mild; ❝ … maybe i should've let you bleach my hair for fred, huh? ❞ he queries, gently. he still thought danny would make a pretty believable shaggy, but the group hadn't gotten around to coordinating their costumes in time for the party. sagely, he adds, ❝ — you would have totally killed it as daphne, for the record. ❞

they talk for a little about nothing, really, and it's much easier than it had been even a month ago. and he hadn't noticed it was just them now, hovering by the back door — the couple lounging on the stairs having probably scurried up to steal a bedroom. and if he were in the reasoning kind of mindset, maybe it's the shots, or the weed, that he could blame for how much closer to her he ends up. the drone of the music in the other room seems to fade back against the sounds of nighttime, drifting in through the back screen door. he can't for the life of him even remember what he was going to say after that, and —
he's been staring, and he's been caught, by the usual discerning look in her eyes. caught, already in the thoughtless motion of tucking a strand of wildfire red from her face, ❝ hey, is this — ❞ he begins, low and unsure. his eyes drop to her lips, and before he can really remember to apologize about anything, she's leaned up — or pulled him down — to kiss him. it's quick and chaste, tentative when she looks over him after, like she's not sure if she meant it, yet. he tastes the cherry touch of her lipstick when she's gone, and there's a pause, where he finds her eyes, softer than she normally regards him. looking once more for her permission, he cusps her cheek in his hand, and chases the kiss — and this time he feels them both ease into it.
it's short and sweet, before leland blinks, pulls back; ❝ sorry, ❞ he manages, reflexive and soft, as he lowers his hand back to his side. it's such a quiet, secret thing; was that okay? he wants to ask. because it hadn't been a spin the bottle game, or something just friendly — but he's kissed his friends, before, so maybe —
before he has time to ask — really ask — there's a shuffling sound at his back, and the door to the sorority house's common area swings open, bringing with it the full volume of the monster mash, and their friends — various states of inebriated. it's danny, first, and then julie and maria pop their heads out from behind him. and then sonny, and ana a bit behind them. ' there you guys are! ' — julie chirps, all warm smiles as she looks between them, and seemingly, or purposefully unaware of what she'd stumbled into.
leland risks one more glance to connie across their friends — but she's already being pulled along by the other girls, chatting animatedly about another party down the road. great, real smooth, mckinney. ( what had he said before? it's just fun, right? ) as the moment passes, leland finds his footing again — breaks into a practiced smile, and loops a playful arm around danny's shoulders; ❝ hey — where we headed, man? night's still young, right? ❞
