Countdown (2019)

I went into Countdown with rock-bottom expectations. After One Missed Call, Selfie From Hell, Cell, Dead Tone, and more, I have no faith in mobile device-based horror. To this film’s credit, the scariest countdown isn’t "the one telling you how much time there is left to the movie". It's not an abomination… but it still isn’t good.

“Countdown” is a new app that supposedly tells you how long you have left to live. Nurse Quinn Harris (Elizabeth Lail) - who apparently has only days remaining - begins wondering if the timer doesn’t reflect the truth when a patient suddenly and inexplicably dies right as his timer runs out. She begins seeing a strange, hooded figure no one else reacts to, prompting a desperate search for a way to prevent her upcoming demise.

If the premise sounds dumb, it is. Not helping is the picture’s crippling and complete lack of suspense. We know Quinn isn’t going to die until her timer reaches zero so until then, it's one cheap jump scare after another. Compare this to "Final Destination" and "The Ring" (this is essentially a hybrid of the two). Both kept things vague and had the protagonist trying to save someone else as well as themselves. It makes the world of difference.

Surprisingly, there are several funny moments during the second half of Countdown. Quinn and fellow doomed phone user Matt (Jordan Calloway) encounter a priest (P. J. Byrne) so eccentric and enthusiastic at the prospect of a demonic app you’ll be laughing out loud. Similarly, the tech specialist they meet (Tom Segura) is so rude and sarcastic you get a brief vision of what this movie should’ve been: a horror-comedy.

Despite a couple of legitimately creepy images, the movie is a mess - sometimes in odd, structural ways. In most horror films, if someone does something bad - like driving drunk - they wind up being punished. They are here as well… but not before other characters who act responsibly. This is an unpolished story. Its moral compass doesn’t feel quite right. Particularly the developments surrounding Quinn’s boss, played by Peter Facinelli. Writer/director Justin Dec lazily wraps up his story. While he ultimately plays a small part in this chiller compared to the killer app thing, a character like his shouldn’t have been included unless he had a purpose but he doesn't.

Countdown is lazy. Its rules are incredibly loose and the details around the app are a huge misstep. How have horror writers not realized by now that ambiguity and mystery is a huge asset? It features a funny mid-credit scene you could stick around for but it raises a bunch more questions. Although I went in wearily, I still held onto hope. Countdown might not be as weak as the trailers had led me to believe! but no, it’s exactly the kind of witless horror film you expected. (Theatrical version on the big screen, October 29, 2019)

So in a turn of events that I absolutely saw coming, “Countdown” ended up being complete shit. Outside of the dedicated performances and better than average production values, there isn’t a single thing that this film gets right. The only thing I was counting down when it was all said and done was the mere amount of seconds I can muster seating in my seat with the eyes forcibly glued to and away from the screen before I’d ultimately make the decision to get up and walk out the theater because all elements of this movie are completely dull, boring, stock and/or infuriating. Characters are paper thin, dialogue is atrocious, the writing is asinine, the script is horrible, all comedic moments or attempts at comedy went dead on arrival, no tension or suspense is present since there are no scares, all of the subplots completely eat away at the pacing of the movie, it often dumbs down the plot elements and concepts it steals from other movies so the film isn’t even allowed to have fun with itself and it makes it abundantly clear that it doesn’t care about its characters, its premise or any sense of coherence, so there's no reason viewers should, either. It results in one of the most obvious horror movie ripoffs let alone one of the most embarrassing films I’ve seen all year. This attempt at another high concept fate-driven horror flick doesn’t reach the same level of campiness, snarkiness, or even an unintentional sense of hilarity like Final Destination 3, the Happy Death Day series or even Truth Or Dare, to be frank about it; it’s just generic and manipulative from beginning to end. Nothing feels real, nothing makes sense, nothing flows together, which I can, at least, applaud the previous films I’ve mentioned to try and justify their films level of ridiculousness. The cast tried their hardest here but there was nothing any of one them could do.
