After 2 years of Concealed Carry

I have been lawfully carrying a concealed weapon for a little over 2 years now. Two years doesn't make any person an expert at anything, but from day one to present I've learned several key things about concealed carry that I didn't know and, didn't see much of or hear about, in any of the articles and videos I found in my research on the topic.

So I'm gonna share my knowledge with you all, because I'm a good guy like that.

Ever since I started carrying a concealed weapon I have had a multitude of conversations with many people about a lot of topics in regards to concealed carry. The caliber debate, what gun is best for concealed carry, do you carry with a round chambered (in the hole as I like to call it), what position do you carry in, is printing a big deal, I could go on and on, and maybe with the blog I will. 

However, one question always comes up more than others and its a loaded question, because many factors play into the proper choice. That question is, what is the best holster? It's an extremely unfair question because there is a massive market on holsters and everyone has an opinion on what is best. So I am generally inclined to give an honest opinion. Here's the trick that I think gets massively overlooked. DO NOT BUY A HOLSTER BECAUSE YOUR BUDDY RECOMMENDS IT! BUY A HOLSTER BECAUSE IT WILL CARRY YOUR GUN PROPERLY, AND SAFELY!

In the last 2 years I have carried several different guns, from full size 1911's down to subcompacts of varying make and model, and you know something I almost always had holsters that were different from one gun to the next.

So lets get into holster selection. I'm not going to use name brands in the blog if you want to know message me. I plan to keep this general cause I am a shill for no man. 

When someone asks me what holster I recommend my first question is always the same. What gun are you carrying? Seems like an obvious question right. But is it? I have seen people carry full sized pistols in a holster that is more suited for a subcompact and they are thoroughly miserable. The next question I ask is where do you carry? I'm a 1630 guy, but an appendix holster is a different thing. And the last question I ask is what kind of belt are you wearing with your current setup? This is probably the most frustrating part of telling someone my suggestion. People are willing to spend money on holsters but not on the belt holding it up, and that is foolishness.

So step one: what gun are you carrying?

If you carry a subcompact like a S&W M&P Shield, a Khar CW9, baby Glock, or a Ruger LCP. I highly recommend a solid kydex holster that has an adjustable cant. If you can, find a local kydex guy who is easy to work with, and tell him you want kydex wrapped in something that is pleasurable to have digging into your flesh all day. I.e. leather, suede, cottonish something or other. A good holster guy will see your brilliance and jump all over it. This market is highly niche at this time. Very few of the common holster makers have offerings of the sort, and I personally think this is the "hybrid" holster of the future. It's easy to wear appendix and its easy to wear at 1630.

If you are carrying a compact like a Glock 19, or a Kimber Compact, etc. The above mentioned holster is still a great option. In fact it would be my choice, but these formats are considerably more weighty. So choosing a hybrid holster that has a single point of contact with your belt is also a great choice. I don't recommend giant, two belt clip holsters with a huge paddle. They are big, make you hot and sweaty, and its just not necessary for a gun that isn't all that heavy.

Perhaps, you are carrying a full size pistol. I.e. a full size 1911, Glock 17 or 21, or Springfield Armory XD (close enough to full size in my book). Then I recommend a big hybrid holster, with two belt clips. In case you hadn't noticed the trend here is that the bigger and heavier the gun the more holster I recommend to hold it up. In my experience and opinion, THE number one driving factor in how comfortable a gun is to carry is WEIGHT. The heavier the gun is the more miserable its gonna make you. Concealability is a different issue entirely that's a whole different blog. I'm talking about comfort. In reality, all holsters have essentially the same ability to conceal your pistol. Your pistol selection, body type, movements, carry position, and clothing drive concealment.

Step two: what carry position do you prefer?

Much more simple here. If you carry appendix I will never recommend anything besides a solid kydex, or wrapped kydex holster. I also don't recommend appendix carry for anyone over 20 percent body fat. I tried it, any amount of gut is likely to be mangled meat after a long day of cc. I also think that the thicker guys have a harder time concealing at the appendix position. If you carry anywhere from 1500 to small of back there are many workable options for holsters.

Step three: what belt are you wearing with your current setup?

Oh the bane of my existence! When I ask this question I am usually dreading the answer. I commonly hear, a nice leather belt, a work belt, a belt that was on sale at Khols. I get it, you have hundreds of dollars wrapped up in obtaining your concealed weapon permit, your gun, the ammo in it, and the holster. Some guy telling you that you should go spend another 50 to 100 dollars on a belt isn't awesome. But believe me when I tell you that nothing can derail the proper carry of a pistol like a belt that isn't up to the task of holding the weight of your gun. A good rule of thumb is to try to bend your belt from the top to the bottom. If it bends easily, you need a better belt. I don't think picking the right belt is rocket science. There are many high quality belts out there that are built with the intent of supporting the weight of a gun. Do yourself a favor and buy one!
