i actually really love how samantha shannon is handling trans/nonbinary characters in her roots of chaos world. they blend seamlessly into her world building, so much so that i don't always notice there's something different. non binary noble? they sure as fuck don't want to be called lord or lady! they are styled 'lade'.

someone uses they/them pronouns? cool! we're not going to waste time going through an explaining that. it's just instant, all our characters refer to the person's preferred pronouns without any second thought.

she really keeps saying, yeah? this story has dragons and witches and wyverns. and it's gonna be queernorm too. don't like it? well fuck off.

Random thought: Elrond traveling to Aman and discovering he has younger siblings.

There doesn’t seem to be any real reason he couldn’t have younger siblings unless you take the darkest possible interpretation of Earendil and Elwing’s fates (never coming down, bird forever, etc.) So he could. Fairly easily, even!

I’m not sure what his feelings on this would be - on the one hand, given his relationship with his brother’s descendants, he seems to be of the opinion that the more family, the better; on the other hand, it seems like it would be impossible not to have at least some complicated emotions about that whole situation if it occurred.

Does anyone know of any fics/meta where someone has explored this?

i will say that like, having actually read the comics, i know that the batfamily are all complex characters with equally complex histories. but a surface level reading of the bats like you would get from a fanfiction or a season of wfa? it will give you basically a bunch of blank slates. the base-level "guy who lost his parents and fights crime" gives you just enough tragedy to pretend the character you made up is also complex. now you have what is essentially a group of white guys you can play with like dolls. i think part of it is that these days people have no desire to actually do more than skim the surface of anything, but part of it is also just that the blander you keep the bats, the easier it is to write your #batfam fanfiction

#this also ties into the unpopularity (? maybe not the right word) of like. the arrowfam for example #a surface read of the arrows is just... not as simple as it is with the bats. there's addiction and tragedy and unsavoury backstories #and complicated family trees and mental illness. and of course connor and emi (and roy) are not white so they aren't as fun to play with #but also i think the arrowfam are more explicitly close devoted family in a less complicated way #whereas people decide the bats' complex relationships = not actually being family. so they can excuse incest shipping that way too #it really does all kind of tie back into lack of reading comprehension. lol #p #dc
