[ID: Digital art of Cobra, the artist’s rendition of Gaster from Undertale. Cobra is a snake-like monster with the signature gaster scars, slit pupils, serpentine fangs, and disembodied hands that are not connected to his wrists. He wears a grey turtleneck, a mask that says the Farsi word for ‘Love’ that he is taking off, whilst on the left side (our left) is his black lab coat before he fell into the core, and on the right is his light absorbing black goopy body after he fell, his sleeves are long and robe like, and they have a black and white paisley pattern on it. His soul is black on the left and white on the right with two holes that leak a yellow liquid as the soul has a yellow glow. Cobra has a sinister and smiling expression. End ID.]
OH GOLLY ITS BEEN A WHILE WITH THIS GRANDPA!!!
ANOTHER art for a another project, this time the 2022 Echo Gaster Community Project hosted by @natsunenuko, which you can watch in full here! Its been so long since I drew Cobra when he’s been such a comfort oc for so long, I don’t know if I’ll be able to fully write out his story now, but maybe one day in another form!

As much as I love undertale idk if I'd really wanna go back to the fandom or at least the massive parts of it. Like, I remember just So Much Shit that was absolutely everywhere and it was so unsafe to deal with.
I really wanna go back to my Cobratale stuff but I think at this rate it's probably better off as it's own thing.

Tips on Skeleton Design Part 3: An Easy Way to Apply the Principles
Disclaimer: May reflect the author’s own artistic preferences. Art is inherently subjective, but the following statements have been phrased as if objective to sound more important and authoritative. This post is best read all at once, and is optimized for desktop reading.
(Part 1) ---> (Part 2) ---> (Part 3)
Tumblr media
(With just sketches, Star-Dragon-Art (StarlightShymmer on DeviantArt) made all five skeletons shown look different---and they’re all wearing the same type of armor, at that. Indeed, three of the designs may have been made specifically for this shot)
Tumblr media
The basis lists the works the designs are derived from, and then the animal I used for the redsigns. Underfresh Sans was created by loverofpiggies; HorrorTale Sans was created by Sour-Apple-Studios, and Underswap and Underfell are generally credited to the community)
As a creative exercise, I decided to re-imagine some common “AU Sanses” in the drawings above.1 2 As a challenge to myself (and simply because humanoid skeletons are so popular) I limited myself to primate skulls, and kept them Sans-like, with big sockets, pupils in those sockets, fused jaws and broad mandibles.
Despite my self-imposed limitations, each skull is clearly distinguishable, having different eye socket shapes, pupils, nose-hole shapes, and teeth shapes.3 (Really, they vary less between each than Sans does from his own brother!) Though time-consuming (partly because I insisted on shading) it was not difficult.
Though I limited myself to primate skull bases as a challenge, skeleton characters don't actually have to be based on primates. Why not other animals? As skeleton monsters are, well, monsters, they needn’t be realistic as human skeletons so long as they still look like skeletons.
Tumblr media
While most interpretations of the character are humanoid, W.D. Gaster of Caretaker of the Ruins has a Utahraptor-like body with a vaguely snakelike head.4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of which, why make them pure skeletons at all? While unclear in the game itself, it’s common fanon that different kinds of monsters can interbreed. Making a skeleton character only half-skeleton would allow one to add creative, more distinguishing details, such as the fishy fins of Ask-the-undyrus-family’s Arial (left) or the ectoplasmic frame of Madhattey's Impact (right). It would also justify making a skeleton character something other than a humanoid skeleton, if one holds the belief skeleton monsters strongly resemble human skeletons by default.
In conclusion: *One doesn't have to use Sans as a template when making skeleton original characters. *Look closely at how skeletons work. *Observe the most important details of a skeleton. *A few unrealistic details or omission of details is fine, if the rest of the details compensate for “skeleton-ness”. *If drawing a preexisting character, keep the character's most distinctive traits. *Using animal skeletons as a basis for skeleton characters is acceptable, creative, and convenient.
While I was replacing my own handwriting with a neater, GIMP-provided one, the first font to show up was “Sans”. (What a coincidence! How did you know, GIMP?) ↩︎
Disclaimer: This is not the image that came directly from the scanner. I adjusted the contrast and color curves, and the neck bone placement and eye size for the Underfell Sans redesign. ↩︎
I didn’t do so well with redesigning HorrorTale Sans; I restricted the aye-aye influences too much. ↩︎
Caretaker of the Ruins' Gaster was originally going to be contrasted with Undertale Rebirth's Gaster, who also appears to have snakelike and skeletal traits, if in different proportions. However, the latter, despite his skeletal attributes, is not defined as a skeleton monster in Undertale Rebirth. The mention is kept here because it's a good design anyway. ↩︎

DID Y’ALL WANT SOME DOCTOR AND SCIENTIST OCS? NO? WELL TOO BAD HERE THEY ARE!
So one of my favourite characters archetypes are ‘wacky mad scientists and doctors’ and as a result of that love I’ve ended up making quite a few scientist and doctor ocs! Some of these you may recognise whilst some you may not, but here’s some more info on them under the cut!
Dr. Chantal Walsh - A character for my Jillie Jitters-verse. Chantal is a trans woman roboticist that loves making weird robots and machines. She is fun-loving, kooky, and always enthusiastic to talk about robotics and engineering and always tries to come up ways robots can be used to make life easier for people (even if some of them may go haywire sometimes!). At a point she creates a robot with free will and the ability to grow like a person, and she treats it like how one would treat their own child.
Forgotten Land - A character for a as of now still unnamed headworld (placeholder name ‘Mutant Animal Story’). FL is a bizarre mutant that seems to be a mashup of many kinds of animals and is a scientist that works in the field of genetic biochemistry. He is also the leader of a organisation that wishes to unite all mutants to work as one and so that he can discover the reason for his bizarre genetic makeup. Personality wise he is polite and friendly if not a little eccentric, but he may have ulterior motives. He is a trans man who performed his own surgeries.
W.D. ‘Cobra’ Gaster - The main character for my Undertale fanverse Cobratale that you have definitely seen if you’ve been around for a while. Cobra is whilst not ‘mad’, has done many things that he regrets and has been through a lot that make him a very solemn and... eccentric person. He tries to be polite and personable, but often his intimidating appearance and odd behavior make social situations very awkward which makes him more reclusive. He truly means well and wants to do what’s best, but he can’t help but be filled with doubt and self hate. He is a transmasc NB and goes by he/they.
Dr. Duckles - A new character for a very weird story concept I came up randomly one day. Dr. Duckles was part of a sect of mad scientists that all wanted to progress society in their own ways, however they were often held back and stopped by a capitalistic corporation due to their inventions never being ‘profitable’ enough. Dr. Duckles was one of the maddest of the sect and saught to destroy the corporation by turning it’s CEOs into cartoon ducks, but it backfired and his head transformed into a cutesy cartoon duck which changed his personality into something more G-rated and became a ‘mascot’ for the corporation. He’s now more of a friendlier and ‘safer’ scientist, but sometimes his old personality re-emerges...
Gudrun - A bearded vulture that works in universities teaching chemistry. Gudrun is a cheery and sweethearted teacher that loves teaching her students and is very encouraging to them and their efforts. She only ever eats bones due to finding most foods too overly stimulating. Of all my scientist characters she’s the least developed and I dunno what to do with her, but maybe I can find something for her.
Dr. Alexander Ravenshaw - A OLLLLD plague doc character from a super old setting I dunno if I’d do anything with anymore called ‘Dealership’ (which you can still find some info about in my blog’s archive, but I do gotta warn that a lot of it has very uhhh insensitive themes that I’m not too proud of writing about now). Alexander was a character for this one set of doctor characters all apart of a ‘Clinic’, he one day woke up without any memory but the knowledge of diseases and their treatments, and so works as a doctor. He is a shy sort who is very affable, but gets overly excited about diseases and their gross effects. Whilst I doubt I’ll do much with the setting of Dealership now, I still like the weird and wacky Clinic dudes and they were always the most developed out of everyone, so who knows, maybe I can do something with them again some day and they can be their own thing! But gosh would I need to refurbish a lot of stuff.

Not sure if I ever posted this, but here’s some old conceptual sketches with Alphys for my Cobratale verse/story.
In my verse, Alphys is a mix between a dragon and a theropod dinosaur monster, and so she has the ability to ‘switch’ from being bipedal and being quadruped. Usually she walks bipedally so she can use her hands for stuff, but when running, she turns quadruped to give her more balance. Sometimes when she wants to go reeeaally fast she may even use her electricity magic to speed her up, but she only ever does this during emergencies as the electricity may end up causing damage to her surroundings.
There’s a few things outdated here, such as the ‘age difference’ on the top, I need to do some proper redesigning of her and give her an actual ref, so you might see that soon.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted my big snake Gaster, Cobra. It’s hard to believe that even after all this time when I was more focused on original stuff for a while that he still means so much to me and I STILL feel guilty for not finishing rebirth or Hissterical-Scientist, even after all these months I am still thinking of ways to actually write the story in the way I want to, even if most of my original audience may not even be around anymore. Even though in the mean time I have still doodled Cobratale stuff for fun, a lot of said doodles are uh... too nsfw to really ever show.
Anyway, here is Saved!Cobra, more info under the cut! (CW for mentions of depression and self harm, but in the context of recovery.)
After all his traumas in the void, Cobra eventually gets the ability to leave and then reunite with his family. Adapting to the outside world was not easy for him due to the differences in his physical and void bodies. Cobra was initially very lethargic, almost never leaving his bed and sleeping all day not only from the constant sores but also the depression of being back in a frail body full of the self-inflicted scars that he hated.
However thanks to the support of his family and all the visiting friends he made whilst in the void, he slowly became more and more able to function. He’s able to get the exercise and care he needs to keep him healthy and more energetic for the day. And thanks to the love he receives from a certain Gaster fragment, he even begins to love and be comfortable with his body more.
Cobra nowadays works in colleges tutoring the sciences, taking part in various projects to help better technologies into becoming more eco-friendly, and has also become a major advocate for Monster’s rights and often works to thin the cultural gaps between human and monsters.
Personality
Due to Cobra’s many traumas, he’s a very tired and quiet sort who at first may seem very reserved and apathetic towards everything, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Cobra deep down feels many of his emotions very strongly, but has trouble properly expressing them due to his nervousness and tiredness. He’s no longer as anxious as he was from before he fell, but he still may find himself feeling shy when talking to someone new, once he has gotten to know someone though, he will be more open and express his emotions more, even becoming quite the cheery and mischievous sort. He also holds great amount of passion towards the sciences and will often speak about it with great enthusiasm if incited to.
Cobra despite his often aloof demeanour is incredibly caring and compassionate, he adores his family and friends, and loves spending time with them whenever he can. He also deeply craves affection and can never get enough of it, expect a lot of cuddles to happen should you ever get close to him.  Oftentimes with friends he deeply trusts he may even show a more hedonistic side and participate in pleasurable activities with them, such as eating savory foods or lazing about together as also a way to bond with each other more.
Cobra being a bestial monster, also has a ‘feral’ side where he acts more animalistic and communicates more with growls than words, most of the time this happens it’s his way of relaxing and forfeiting any complex stressful thoughts for a while to just focus on more simple pleasures, but when this feral state is induced by high amounts of stress or fear, it’s pretty much a panic attack and he becomes difficult to control and calm down. Anger-induced feral states may have him be downright aggressive to whoever his anger may be towards, but this anger will only ever manifest towards those who may hurt him and those he loves.
Cobra isn’t without his difficulties either, due to his traumas Cobra is not as energetic as before, and he can get tired out and overwhelmed easily if pushed too far. Sometimes his tiredness can manifest as irritation and he may end up being mildly snappy to others, though he always regrets it afterwards. There are also of course, some days where he feels its pointless to get out of bed or just doesn’t have the energy for it. There are still times where he feels he and his body doesn’t deserved to be loved and is overwhelmed with guilt from his past sins no matter how old they may be.
He’ll never be the same before he fell, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t become better. Likes
-His friends and family and spending time with them -Science and teaching it -Food (mostly enjoys raw meat but he’s recently been more experimental) -Affection -Nature and walking in forests -Science fiction movies and novels (likes them more when watching and reading them with someone) -Relaxing -Poetry and prose (reminds him of his beloved mother...)
Dislikes
-Cruelty -Prejudice -Any family or friend being hurt -Chicken meat when cooked (too dry!) -Unpleasant smells and/or too many smells -Loud noises -Being suddenly touched -Certain textures for clothing
Abilities
Venom - Cobra still has his venom, though he hardly ever uses it. The venom depending on Cobra’s intentions when using it, can either cause mild harmless dizziness or be downright lethal.
Heightened sense of smell - As usual he still has his sense of smell and it even comes handy when working with chemicals, but in places where there is an abundance of smells such as busy city areas or times during the season of Spring, it can be overwhelming, it isn’t out of the question for him to sometimes wear medical masks to ease the smells a bit.
Void form - Should he need it, Cobra has the ability to go back into his Void Form. After regaining some of his strength back when he was saved, he experimented with some of his magic to help get all his gears back in shape, Cobra discovered his magic still held traces of his old void magic. Through enough practice he can now maintain this form for as long as he needs and use any abilities from his Void Form. The flexibility of his Void Form has even extended to his normal physical form, and it’s helped with his jaw’s paralysis.
Interdimensional hopping - Thanks to also his void abilities, Cobra can hop into different dimensions, timelines, alternative universes, and the void itself to visit all the friends he’s managed to make in the void.
Hand magic - Cobra can summon multiple hands for whatever task he needs them for, whether it be just handling tons of documents or to help him with his other magic.
Snake magic - Can summon magic-based snakes for whatever attacks, these snakes can bind, strangle, and even inject magical-based venom into enemies. The snakes may also be used for defense and protectively coil around anything that needs protection
Movement-based magic - Much of Cobra’s magic is based on movement and it may often appear that he is dancing when summoning magic.
Blaster summoning - Thankfully hardly ever needs to use them, but if facing a dangerous enemy, he can and will blast them. Blasters can also sometimes be used as scouts to search for anything that Cobra’s sense of smell may not be able to find. Multilingual - Cobra is able to speak in Common, Persian, his race’s old serpentine language (though he sadly doesn’t have much use for it anymore), and Wingdings typeface.
Big an’ soft - Cobra is very soft and very huggable, and a hug from Cobra is like hugging a pillow. HUG. HIM.

An update on my undertale stuff...
I’ve been thinking about full-on redoing all my Undertale fanstuff and just starting from scratch, I initially started Rebirth as a ‘go with the flow comic’ where I would make dialogue and plot points and first thought it would last for about a month or two, but it took me 4 years to where I am now as the years went by the less fun it became and more disappointed in it I was, I didn’t even get to experiment that much art-wise and it was often just... the same characters talking. I even wanted it my whole ‘verse’ to be complex yet Rebirth hasn’t even done a good job in establishing all the characters and the main themes I wanted to convey.
How would you all feel if I full-on started from scratch and made a different beginning?

Young Cobra Gaster concept art, he’s a little hunter!
A potential ‘suit’ idea I have for him, but tbh, I feel he’d wear more heavier clothing (most likely made from dear pelt) to help protect himself from any potential threats, this was a lot of fun to draw though!! :)
