Oates (the only name actor at this point; this was way before Sam Neill's iconhood) did the film for peanuts and a holiday in a#country he'd never been to. the script is wonderful‚ and what might have very easily been a naive anti totalitarian treatise is instead a#bitingly sharp condemnation of fence sitting and the apolitical. Neill's protagonist is a small man in a mad world of extremism and#absolutists‚ but he does everything he can to avoid picking a side‚ way beyond the point of reason‚ to the point of madness. only when his#entire life has been upended‚ when the world as he knows it is non existent‚ is he forced to take action; long after the viewer has#screamed themselves silly begging him to just.. do something. to open his eyes to the injustice and horror and violence. maybe there's a#lesson there.. maybe this is a film for the ages. certainly it's one of the best I've seen in a very long time
