Movie no. 40: trying to get through the films that I watched the past couple of days for #365classicmoviechallenge : the night before I watched the 1937 screwball comedy “Easy Living” starring Jean Arthur, Ray Milland, Edward Arnold, Mary Nash & Luis Alberni alongside a slew of popular character actors including Franklin Pangborn & William Demarest 😊 Jean Arthur’s career started in the silent era in the 20s but never really garnered success until she transitioned to the talkies her first big breakout hit was with William Powell in “The Canary Murder Case” In 1929 but her popularity would begin to rise when she joined Columbia in 1934 and before this film already hit films with The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (her 4th and final film with Powell) and her first big success in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town with Gary Cooper 😊 she would later go on to star in more successful films like You Can’t Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington & Only Angels Have Wings 😊 This is one of Preston Sturges first big successes as a screenwriter in fact this was his first assignment when he signed to Paramount in 1936. When he wrote the script and brought it to a studio executive it was instantly rejected as the exec said that “1936 was not the time for comedies” after that he sent the script to director Mitchell Leisen and he said “going to a director over the head of my producer was not a sagacious move” 😂 Adolphe Menjou was supposed to Star in this film (in what I’m guessing is the J.B. Ball role) but had to back out due to illness All the jewels and fur that were used in this film were real and guards were posted during shooting to ensure that none of them disappeared The song of the same name became a popular jazz standard as years went on and was famously sung/performed by jazz artists such as Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Miles Davis among others 😊 The film was an okay hit among critics and the box office but it has since become a screwball comedy classic and one of the first that helped define the genre 😊 #jeanarthur #raymilland #edwardarnold #easyliving #prestonsturges #screwballcomedy #classicmovienight #classicmovies #oldhollywood #classichollywood

Movie no. 20: tonight I’m watching 2 movies for my #365classicmoviechallenge the first one I watched earlier this evening it was the 1953 epic western “Shane” starring Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin & Brandon De Wilde is his film debut 😊 This film is considered to be one of George Stevens’ best films as a director. Originally George wanted Montgomery Clift & William Holden for the roles of Shane & Joe but both were unavailable and even considered Katharine Hepburn to play Marian so George asked Paramount who was available and when they showed the list to him within 3 minutes he picked Ladd, Arthur & Heflin 😊 This would be Jean Arthur’s last film as an actress at the age of 50 she’s known for such films as Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, You Can’t Take It With You, Only Angels Have Wings, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town & Easy Living 😊 and has previously worked with Stevens in the films The Talk Of The Town & The More The Merrier the latter for which she was nominated for her one and only Oscar for best actress 😊. She was currently in retirement when she was asked to do this film and she agreed to do it as a favour to George who was one of her good friends at the time. It was her first film in 5 years and her only film in Technicolor 😊 This is probably Alan & Van’s most memorable role as actors Alan is also well known in the 1942 film “This Gun For Hire”. Van Heflin is mainly known for his supporting roles in many films including The Feminine Touch, Johnny Eager (in which he won an Oscar for best supporting actor), Presenting Lily Mars, The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers & Possessed 😊. Both Alan & Van got along really well on set 😊 The movie was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture but only won 1 for best cinematography an Oscar very well deserved because one of the most memorable things about this film is it’s wonderful scenery 😊 Brandon De Wilde was also nominated for best supporting actor 😊 #alanladd #jeanarthur #vanheflin #shane #western #georgestevens #brandondewilde #classicmovienight #classicmovies #oldhollywood #classichollywood

Movie no. 38: the 2nd movie I watched was the original 1937 drama “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor, Fredric March & Adolphe Menjou 😊 This film revived Janet’s career by this time. She first started in the silent era in 1926’s “The Johnstown Flood” & signed with Fox right after that and in 1927 she quickly became one of Hollywood’s leading ladies in films like 7th Heaven (her first of 12 films she did with Charles Farrell known as Hollywood’s “love birds”) & Sunrise 😊. She transitioned very well to talkies in films like Sunny Side Up, State Fair & The Farmer Takes A Wife 😊 She was also the first in history to win Best Actress at the first ever academy Awards ceremony in 1929 for her roles in 1928 (the only time the Oscars nominated people for multiple roles) and was a top box office draw during the early 30s 😊 When 20th Century merged with Fox she signed a new contract but with other actresses on the rise including Alice Faye, Loretta Young & Shirley Temple her career was starting to decline. She had a minor hit with Ladies in Love but her box office appeal went from no. 1 in 1934 to no. 24 by 1937 so she left Fox and planned on retiring until she met up with David O. Selznick who wanted her to star in this film believing that the role of Esther “Vicki Lester” Blodgett would be perfect for her so she agreed to do it 😊 The film was a huge success and it’s considered one of the first ever successful Technicolor films both critically and commercially 😊 colour films before this were often garish, oversaturated & caused headaches for many so Selznick used a more muted realistic colour for his films that worked and with the success of this film and Nothing Sacred it would lead to other Technicolor classics like Gone With The Wind 😊 The film was nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture (the first ever nominated colour film) and another Best Actress nomination for Gaynor & Best Actor for Fredric March but won only one for best original story & an honorary Oscar for Howard Greene for its colour photography 😊 #classicmovienight #janetgaynor #fredricmarch #adolphemenjou #astarisborn #1937 #classicmovies #oldhollywood #classichollywood
