Wait, Carm. She's the best. I know. And so are you.

He let her take the wheel
Carmy let her take the wheel of the relationship time and time again since day 1. The last time he took the wheel, was when he gave her the wrong number. After that, it was all her doing and he letting her do it.
And here are the leads Storer graphically planted for us:
She unilaterally gets his number from Fak and calls him:
Tumblr media
She's always the designated driver:
Tumblr media
She's the one who says I ❤️ U first -to a guy who gave her the wrong number, a guy with whom she "hung out so much with but never actually talked" and didn't even call her his "girlfriend"- ...
Tumblr media
And we all know how he took it, BTW.
What I'm saying is: She drove him places. And he let her. That's what he did. It was "comfortable", and easier for him in a sense. He evades, he deflects, he denies, till he reaches a breaking point. And he does reach it because he's actually a control freak by nature, so the delegation is just a coping mechanism he just sometimes uses not to explode.
And at some point, he stopped letting Claire take the wheel of their relationship, after this happened:
Tumblr media
So things ended up like this, even though he didn't mean to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was no longer calling the shots when that happened, obviously.
I go into more detail here.
Here
And here.
Now that Carmy is in control again, he will have to make some choices that he has been postponing, evading, etc. And not just about the restaurant to make sure he doesn't get stuck in the walk-in anymore.
He needs to get unstuck in other ways too, and now that Claire is no longer in the picture or at the wheel, he can.

Parallels between Marcus and Claire
Tumblr media
I am not about to compare Claire’s ass (which had, in my opinion, people pleasing tendencies more than other things, but that is in clear view a manic pixie dream girl) to my sweet angel Marcus. Marcus is a whole character to begin with.
But in their relationships with Carmy and Sydney respectively, there are some parallels:
1. Both Claire and Marcus did all the pursuing of the relationship
2. The pursuing lasted the whole season, with both Claire and Marcus trying to take the relationship to the next level on opening night. Claire by saying I love you, and Marcus by asking Sydney out. Funny enough, both attempts ended up in the culmination of the romantic relationship /eliminating the potential for one. Both Carmy and Syd said no.
3. Both Claire and Marcus could be considered “out of their league” to Carmy and Syd (if they were in hight school). Claire was a popular girl in hight school, and Marcus played football in college so I am assuming he also did it in hight school. Don’t come for me I am getting these data from America teenage movies. Both conventionally attractive. They are an aspirational partner.
4. Both are caregivers to sick people. Claire as a doctor, so it is her job. Marcus as a “nurse” to his mom and making sure there is others to care for her.

hear me out...when i watched the bear for the first time, two seasons were already out and I had no idea there was all this talk about sydcarmy. I did not have any suspicions while watching season 1, BUT episode s2e08, the part where carmy makes dinner for claire. the first time i watched it I was like, why did they put this parallel of Syd goin home, givin these melanchonic vibes? Why the tattoo and the blue light? Does she feel lonely? Why are you showin me syd while carmy is celebrating with her girlfriend? What are you trying to tell me? And then the panick attack, and the scene under the table? I didn't care about them being involved romantically because the show keeps you interested in so many beautiful ways, but those scenes were definetly hintin at something

Was Sydney in a car accident?
Tumblr media
Rewatching, they make a recurring bit of the fact that Sydney is "not coordinated" by making her drop things, fall into walls, and stumble a lot, (especially into Richie, a person who, for some reason, lost his driving license). Makes you think of the way she is also described as "incredibly impatient, incredibly green" which is another way of saying she goes "too far, too fast."
I wonder if this is supposed to be foreshadowing (or symbolism?) of a time she was, in fact, going too fast in a car and stumbling or crashed into another car, or something.
Another thing that makes me suspect of this, is the fact that she doesn't own a car. Now, economic reasons and all, thinking of her past, it doesn't make much sense. She ran a catering business on her own, from her home, like, she had to have a car. How else is she supposed to transport food/ingredients to the location? How could she buy big quantities of ingredients and bring them to her home? Logistically only the fact that she had to deliver food to events on her own seems like a nightmare in itself. How she could do anything in a business like that without a car? Idk
Walk with me for a minute. If she survived an accident, it also would be kind of poetic. Comparing it to Donna's self-harm attempt, when Sydney is shown as an antithesis of Donna. Sydney could have been involved in an actual accident and carries guilt for it. I think it is likely that she was a passenger, but she could carry survivor guilt, that being her motivation to do all the things she does, make her time count. It contrasts with Donna's intention of taking her own life in front of her children to make them all feel guilty over her death. Then you will have Sydney, who would do anything to be able to go back in time and prevent the accident, thinking in someone's life as well. It will be grim, but, I mean, it could fit. It could also contrast with Claire's reckless driving, she admitted she was a bad driver, but enjoyed the "danger" precisely because she is bad at it. Sydney seems afraid/anxious of recklessly doing anything. The 3 women in Carmy's life are in this kind of triangle of behavior/accidents behind the wheel...
