Shoot. Quella pallottola che cambiò la storia dell’arte

Ricordate il film “Ricomincio da capo” del 1993, di Harold Ramis, con Billy Murray e Andie McDowell? No?! quello in cui il protagonista ripete in loop lo stesso giorno perché intrappolato in un circolo temporale... Un po come le nostre vite da un mese a questa parte praticamente. Camera da letto - balcone - salotto - cortile - salotto - balcone - camera da letto e così via. Giorno dopo giorno sempre la stessa routine al punto che ogni tanto penso: “mo mi sparo; giuro che la trovo una pistola e mi sparo!”. Vabbè, diciamo la verità: è strano quando non la dico questa frase... eppure ogni volta che dalle mie labbra escono fuori queste parole, non posso fare a meno di pensare ad una data ed un’ora precisa.

F - SPACE, Santa Ana, California - 19 novembre 1971. Ore 19:45. Un giovane Bruce Dunlamp imbraccia un fucile calibro 22; a cinque metri da lui Chris Burden in attesa che venga sparato il colpo contro di lui. Intorno a loro il silenzio di una platea che vorrebbe bloccare l’azione, ma temendo per la vita del giovane artista, resta immobile; nessuno può intervenire, l’unico modo possibile è assistere in maniera impassibile a quello che sta accadendo. Il momento giunge, Bruce spara, ma all’ultimo secondo gli trema la mano e il colpo vira leggermente verso sinistra, rischiando per poco di forare il petto di Chris all’altezza del cuore. Un cameraman filma l’intera azione, ma la sua inesperienza e i mezzi non adeguati non rendono bene la potenza di quello che era appena accaduto. Quella pallottola che per un istante trapassa il braccio di Chris rappresenta una vera e propria rivoluzione nella storia dell’arte.  

Ma chi è questo Chris Burden e perchè si è spinto così oltre quella sera?

Christopher Lee Burden, meglio conosciuto con il diminuitivo di Chris, nasce a Boston l’11 aprile 1946. Figlio dell’ingegnere Robert Burden e della biologa Rohda Burden, trascorre un’infanzia serena a Cambridge, nel Massachussets; successivamente si trasferirà in Francia, prima, e in Italia, poi.  All'età di 12 anni ha subito un intervento chirurgico di emergenza, eseguito senza anestesia, al piede sinistro, dopo essere stato gravemente ferito in uno scontro motociclistico all'isola d'Elba; durante la lunga convalescenza che seguì, si interessò all'arte visiva e in modo particolare alla fotografia. Si è successivamente diplomato in arti visive, fisica e architettura al Pomona College e all'Università della California, Irvine, dove ebbe fra gli insegnanti l'artista Robert Irwin, che lo introdusse nel mondo delle installazioni. Oltre alle azioni performative, in un secondo momento, Burden ha prodotto una serie di creazioni ingegneristiche e successivamente una serie di installazioni che riflettono gli aspetti della vita nel nuovo millennio, mediante opere architettoniche di medio e grande formato.  L'artista è deceduto a Topanga, il 10 maggio 2015, a causa di un melanoma. Prima di morire stava progettando un mulino ad acqua che avrebbe dovuto affiancare la torre di alluminio di Frank Gehry, presso la LUMA Foundation. Era sposato con l'artista multimediale Nancy Rubins. Ha vissuto e lavorato a Los Angeles, in California. Il suo studio si trovava presso il Topanga Canyon. Dal 1967 al 1976 è stato sposato con Barbara Burden, la quale ha documentato e partecipato a molte delle sue prime opere. Nel 1978 divenne professore all'Università della California, a Los Angeles, una posizione dalla quale si dimise nel 2005. Sebbene non sia chiaro il motivo della sua scelta, alcuni affermano che sia stato accusato di aver violato le norme di sicurezza dell'istituto tentando di usare una pistola durante una performance artistica dimostrativa.  

Iniziò a interessarsi alla performance art nei primi anni settanta. In questo periodo trovò nella violenza fisica il suo modo di esprimersi: le prime performance lo misero fisicamente in pericolo. La consapevolezza del corpo e la sua fragilità sono usate dall'artista per riportare violentemente in vita tutte le emozioni. Stiamo parlando di uno degli artisti che ha trasformato tutta la sua vita in una performance, basti pensare a Five Day Locker Piece, azione che venne presentata come tesi di laurea di Burden stesso, in cui l’artista rimase chiuso per cinque giorni e cinque notti nel suo armadietto universitario. L’azione venne successivamente trasformata e venduta come oggetto d’arte. O ancora il 23 aprile 1974 a Speedway Avenue presso Venice (Los Angeles) tenne la famosa Trans-Fixed. Durante la performance si fece letteralmente crocifiggere sulla parte posteriore di una Volkswagen Maggiolino. L'auto venne esposta al pubblico per circa due minuti col motore acceso. Le vibrazioni gli causarono forti dolori alle mani. 

Tornando a quella fatidica sera del 1971, Burden era probabilmente inconsapevole che con quella pallottola che gli avrebbe trapassato il braccio da parte a parte, in realtà avrebbe dato un grandissimo scossone all’intero sistema dell’arte, guadagnando un posto d’onore sul podio dei più grandi artisti del XX secolo. E nell’immaginario di tutti, incancellabile come una metafora, una profezia, una coltellata nel cuore del secolo, resta quel proiettile sparato a pochi metri di distanza. Che non raggiunse il cuore, per un soffio. Lo accusarono di voler fare spettacolo, parlarono di violenza, di perversione, di un’arte nichilista, sensazionalista, mortifera e brutale. E invece no. “Penso che molta gente abbia mal compreso […] Era per me un’esperienza mentale (vedere come reagivo mentalmente): era sapere che alle sette e mezza sarei andato a fare un’azione in cui qualcuno mi avrebbe sparato addosso. Era come poter organizzare il destino o qualche cosa del genere, in una maniera controllata”.

Con Shoot, Chris Burden realizza quello che effettivamente è un concetto portato avanti da molti artisti, ovvero quello di morire per l’arte. Ma non morire in senso letterale, in un certo modo sfida la morte guardandola negli occhi, spinge il suo corpo al limite, e nello stesso tempo fornisce allo spettatore un’esperienza unica nel suo genere; dopo di questo tutto è nuovo, è diverso.

On my exodus from the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures I walked to the installation of Chris Burden's Urban Light, a favorite of mine and obviously others. I knew people shot there. I was more surprised how children played there lite by those light and sheltered by the surrounding palms. I shot roughly a 240 of the installation as I passed walking from the Pachinko premiere. The light in such a way to please the eye and, for me, evoke childhood memories of play at dusk. It’s soothing and inspiring at the same time managing to create beauty from outdated light sources like the period street lamps. It lightens the walk and rests the mind.
