TCL 40 SE / 403/408 mobile phones released

TCL announced three new budget smartphones and a tablet at CES 2023. The best-equipped phone in the new series is the TCL 40 SE. It is equipped with a 6.75-inch LCD screen with HD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate, and a front-facing 8MP selfie camera. The phone is also equipped with stereo speakers.

The TCL 40 SE phone is powered by a MediaTek Helio G37 chip, with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage, which can be further expanded via a microSD slot. The rear has a 50MP main camera along with a 2MP macro camera and depth sensor. The phone is pre-installed with the Android 13-based TCL UI 5.0 system, has a battery capacity of 5010 mAh, and has a charging speed of 18W. Available in gray and purple, the TCL 40 SE will be available in Europe later in the first quarter for around $169.

The TCL 408 is a slightly cheaper alternative to the 40 SE at $129. It features a 6.6-inch LCD screen with HD+ resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. Rear 50MP main camera and 2MP depth camera. Front-facing 8MP selfie camera. The TCL 408 is powered by a MediaTek Helio P22 chip and has 4GB/6GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage. The phone is pre-installed with Android 12, has a battery capacity of 5000 mAh, and supports 10W charging speed.

The TCL 408 is available in gray and blue for $129 and will be available in Europe and Asia soon. The TCL 403 is also a low-budget device with a 6-inch TFT IPS screen with a resolution of 480 x 960 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone has a 5MP selfie camera on the front and an 8MP main camera on the rear. It's powered by a MediaTek Helio A22 chip, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage. The phone comes pre-installed with Android 12 (Go edition) and packs a 3000 mAh battery that charges via microUSB. The TCL 403 is available in black and fog purple. Pricing and availability details were not provided. Separately, TCL also announced the TCL NxtPaper 12 Pro tablet, which has a 12.2-inch screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio. It uses MediaTek Kompanio 800T chip and 8GB+256GB storage, which can be expanded through microSD slot. Front 8MP camera, rear 13MP camera and LED flash.

The TCL tablet supports the E-Pen stylus with 8192 pressure levels. The software is equipped with the Android 12 system, the battery capacity is 8000 mAh, and it is charged via USB-C. TCL also offers an optional keyboard accessory that magnetically attaches to the tablet via pogo pins. The TCL NxtPaper 12 Pro Wi-Fi version is priced at $499 (about 3,433 yuan) in the United States, while the 5G model will be available later this year for $549 (about 3,777 yuan). First 1TB Phone Smartisan R1 Review

 Android phones are killing budget laptops and for a reason! We now have a 1TB Storage Flagship phone and it’s not made by Samsung or Apple but by the visionary smartphone Smartisan and dubbed Smartisan R1 (Revolution One).

The phone features a massive 6.17-inch FHD+ 19:9 IPS Force Touch sensitive Display and is powered by the fastest mobile SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. Smartisan R1 Cameras are also upgraded to 12+20MP Sony IMX363 with OIS+EIS to deliver better photo and video quality. Probably not up to par with Pixel 2 and S9 but clearly a match for the previous generation S8 and Pixel XL.

Performance won’t be an issue with R1, wheter it’s browsing, gaming or social media. The Snapdragon 845 can handle anything you throw at it with ease.

You can clearlytell benchmarks paint a strong device that can compete with any phone on the market for performance.

Performance and design aside what makes Smartisan devices unique is their software. This year the big upgrade from 4.2 to Smartiasn OS 6.0 brings improvements to an already established an unique user experience. With heavy inspirations from MacOS, not iOS this software skin boasts features like Idea Pill, Big Band and Voice Assistant and it’s been improved with Android Oreo behind it.

All in all Smartisan R1 makes a compelling case especialy with the 1TB Storage and 8GB RAM variant which will set you back a massive $1400 but there is always the standard 6+64GB Version costing just $599. The R1 might not be the best option here in the west since most of the features are ment to work in Chinese but anyone who’s looking for a different experience will revel in joy with Smartisan R1.

The R1 also comes in Pure White. Smartisan R1 Final Thoughts I personally, still use my Smartisan Nut Pro 2 with Snapdragon 660 and am very pleased overall with it’s performance, battery life and how thoughtful and different Smartisan OS is. The phone for me cements Smartisan as the up-and-coming exotic tech to buy, but the R1 is not as revolutionary as I hoped in terms of design but rather Software and Presentation.
