"It comes at a cost, son,"
Hey everyone, @wereah here!
WOO! We are now officially done with Cael's intro!
This is incredibly exciting. You now know all of the important character bits to get you started in the first semester. Hopefully haha
When I started the original Fast Friends all the way back in 2022, I never imagined that we would get this far. @dailyrandomwriter and I have learned so much. Tried new things. Figured out things that did and didn't work.
This is the longest running project I've worked on. I hope that you'll stay with us for the rest of it!
Reminder: we will, as always, be taking a short hiatus between chapters. Chimera Academy will return to tumblr on March 30th!

Pretty proud of how this panel is turning out!
(future panels of @chimeraacademy-comic )
I'm working on some side projects too, though they'll be slow in coming. The MGS thing I wanted to do for Halloween is probably gonna be more like Christmas if not New Years! lol
Oh and I've got some ideas for a Zosan thing, we'll see if I follow through on that. I'm not married to that idea.

Day 560
As I celebrate finally finishing all of the Chimera student profiles (until the new batch of first years arrive) I have to stop and wonder a bit. One of the things I had to do when Chimera Academy migrated from a D&D campaign to a comic was expand on all of the students.
Which is a weird thing to do from an outsider’s perspective because most of that information no one is going to see except me and Were-Ah.
This might be why the writing exercise, morning papers, is a popular one among writers, because it’s supposed to help writers get used to the idea that most of their writing is never going to see the light of day.
That might sound horrifying to a lot of people, especially in a society where the idea of not having anything to show for your hard work is considered a failure.
The thing though, that is the reality of worldbuilding. You as the reader do not need to know explicitly all the motivations that have brought every student to Chimera Academy, or the teachers that have decided to become staff there. I however, do, because if I do my job right that will inform me on how these individuals will interact with the main characters and the world around them. Were-Ah needs to know where these students come from, because it’ll inform her of the kind of clothes they wear or colours they prefer.
And as much as I love a lot of these little characters, I’m not going to be able to introduce you to all of them.
Unless I write a lot of shorts, which is a possibility… because sometimes I still need help in figuring out these characters.

— Tashiro's Dorm
All the dormitories have the same floral wallpaper as the common room. There is a bed pushed up into the corner, with beige sheets and a floral print to match the walls. There is a glass bottle of cherry cola on the nightstand, and across from it, is a television with two channels: a static screen and a terribly old ghost show that plays the fifth episode on loop. On the desk sits a notebook and various writing utensils, along with an EMF reader, a jar of salt, and a digital camera. A constant electric hum rings through the room.
A student may ask the hall attendant or headmistress if it requires anything.
On the door, there are some letters scratched into the wood, and a knife deeply imbedded into it.

[crossovanon] how does Felina life compare to spider-man’s? Peter (over one week i think) had his best friend, harry osborn become evil, thought his parents who were dead for years came back to life only to find out they where robots build by harry, harry died, aunt may ended up on her death bed, and when Peter went back to his apartment, he found another him that lead Into him wondering whether he was a clone (overly simplified and this isn’t even the worst)
I don't think here's moved that fast (especially since she'd had her power since she was born)
Her life is still definitely chaotic though. I can't speak for the older generations of this fictional comic world, but in the current generation... At 14, she'd been a sidekick for a while to her father, a hero named The Sleuth. One day he went missing and so she went on a journey to try and find him, only to watchin him die in front of her when she did find him. Some time after that, she's shipped off to the main head hero group base in the artic with two other rising vigilante heroes to be a part of the new HIT academy. Then while she's learning at the HIT Academy, there's more shenanigans, and the Chimera Kid accident and then the year after that she meets Annise and... Yeah.

While the climax of Dunmesh [here’s your warning for spoilers] gives us an extremely thorough look into Laios’s psyche and his own desires, we don’t actually know that much about Falin, despite her “death” kicking the entire story into motion. The only bits of Falin we get to see are through the lens of other characters, who inherently show us their own biased perceptions of her. I’d go as far to say that Falin is actually the character in Dungeon Meshi who’s true desires we know the least about!
We know with absolute certainty at least a few things: Falin is gifted with powerful magic, wants to follow behind and travel with her brother who she deeply respects, loves her friend Marcille, likes fruits and creams, loves insects and is curious about monsters, once again like Laios… most of the things we learn about Falin are things that she has in common with her brother, but what does SHE want, deep down? How does she feel about everything? I don’t think we’ll fully get an answer to that question before the manga is over. This is definitely on purpose though, and has even been hinted at in the text (which I’ll get to later).
In my opinion the main difference between Falin and Laios is that Falin doesn’t want to hurt anyone besides herself (for the sake of others, and she barely knows who that self is) and Laios wants to hurt anyone who he “doesn’t like” (anyone who endangers him and those he loves). Both of these feelings stem from the same shared events of their childhood where they both began to feel “disconnected” from humanity so to speak, but they reacted to it in opposite ways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where Laios stubbornly ran away and refused to deal with being hurt and surrounded by hurt, Falin, who we rarely see making choices based on any desires for herself (staying in the academy for 8 years after being sent by her father despite not thinking it’s for her, nearly agreeing to marry Shuro just so that she doesn’t have to deal with being asked later, etc.), doesn’t object to anything she’s subject to because the only person being “hurt” in these scenarios is herself, which to her is acceptable. She accepts the fact that she’s considered “othered” extremely easily, and this reflects openly in both her behavior and in the few things we know about her: she connects with and cares deeply for spirits despite being ostracized, admires insects and monsters like her brother, and is even fine planning to take on a job that’s revered in her hometown. To Falin, being “othered” is more normal to her than the alternative
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only people in Falin’s life that make her feel like *more* than just an outsider are Laios and Marcille. As a result Laios and Falin end up with similar sounding mindsets on the surface; "As long as [the people I love] are okay, I don't care about anything else" — but underneath, they actually manifest completely differently! Where Laios “doesn’t care about people”, Falin cares deeply about them despite barely being treated as one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only *active* decision from Falin we see that most obviously reflects her deepest desires is her choice to die for those she loves, which I think says a lot about her.
I think that if Laios is “a human who wants to become a monster” because he hates humans due to his past, the most obvious foil to him is Kabru, “a human who wants to destroy monsters” because of his past in Utaya (and feeling like a monster himself). Thinking of them as two ends of a spectrum, in the grey middle ground of this is where I think I’d put Falin.
She’s simultaneously a human made subhuman, a monster made to follow Thistle, a “ghost” of her former self haunting Laios and Marcille — she really IS the absolute epitome of a “chimera”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lion cursing Laios was the “hinting in the text” I talked about earlier: forcing his deepest desire into something seemingly impossible to achieve, a chimera. The surface level conclusion when reading this is that Falin won’t be revived, but I seriously don’t think it’ll be that simple in the end. After all, a chimera is multifaceted.
My hope for the final chapter of Dungeon Meshi is that, *if* by some chance Falin is revived, she will finally have to grapple with not only having to look deep within herself to answer all of these things for her own sake, but also with having the one opportunity in which she chose to use any sort of agency to act upon her deepest desires not only be completely reversed, but also hurting so many people in the process. When Falin is revived in the Red Dragon arc, she doesn’t even remember sacrificing herself for her friends — but she promises Laios to never do it again, falling back into her typical submissive obedience. How would she react the second time? Will we even get to know? Something tells me, probably not.

QPR chimera be like
MK + Mei: literally two sides of the same coin. they are a 2 in 1 package. do not separate. nobody will ever know them like they know one another. they grew up together through their roughest and messiest (so far) years. they built a connection of mutual blind trust that only being in the same martial arts academy can. they've seen each other naked more times then they can count. they've bared their whole souls to each other over a plate of chips and gummy bears. they finish each other's sentences and sandwiches. they've molded themselves around each other, and now they can't stand on their own without the other.
MK + Red Son: they lean on each other, they could talk together for hours and never get tired, they are constantly reminded of each other, they can never have enough hours in the day to share together. they can be vulnerable and open about stuff they never could with others, because that vulnerability with others they are close to involves breaking some sort of illusion of how they present themselves. they are learning more about themselves everytime they just sit together and just, Be. the power imbalance goes both ways and they know it, and they work with it instead of around it. they are building something together everyday, and its dearly cherished.
Red Son + Mei: they are mirrors of each other. they know each other's struggles for simply being born as they are better than anyone else. they are royalty, their parents have expectations, they adore their parents, the filial piety could swallow them whole and they'd let it. they know loyalty like its carved into their very bones, they know devotion like it runs in their veins. they'd kill and they'd die for those they care about. they'd tear each other apart if their family asked them to, and neither would hold a grudge about it, because they Understand. they don't even need to speak to each other to know when something is wrong, and what they need to feel better. they have the same favorite snacks, and incense, and favorite bike mod content creators. they match.

Day 574
I was supposed to be writing the prose for the chapter First Steps in Chimera Academy today. That was the plan, as I had already started it yesterday since that was my goal for this week.
However two days ago, as I was packing for my specialist appointment, I had a thought about how to start a chapter. Not the chapter after First Steps, which is called Calling All Mystery Club Members! No, it was to the chapter after that, involving Cael.
It was just a small scene that I really wanted to start this unnamed chapter with as a follow up to the ending for the Mystery Club, but it was such a small scene that I couldn’t really justify having it in. However, I stewed on it, because even with ADHD meds, I still needed something to keep me occupied while I do the boring task of sending questionnaire packages and then calling people to make sure they go check their emails.
This by the way, is a terrible idea for someone who has mild fixation problems.
A fact that I was reminded of when my brain suddenly hit upon an idea. See… I realized that for four chapters I never explained why Cael wanted friends. At all. Unlike the others where it’s very clear from the first few panels of them meeting that they are very lonely children. Not to say that Cael isn’t lonely in his own weird way, but Cael is not lonely in the same way Salron, Emmi and Dorothea are.
The three, due to circumstances beyond their control, just didn’t get to interact with a lot of people their age, but Cael has interacted with a lot people.
So, this chapter was a very good excuse to lay the groundwork in why Cael is the way he is. Also to introduce Cosima… which was a trip.

— Common Room
A big room with cream floral wallpaper. There are two corduroy sofas, each a deep maroon color, standing on a faded crimson Persian rug. On the side table is a lamp, emitting a warm, yellow light, and a golden phonograph, playing a jazzy tune. There are several board games underneath the deep brown coffee table, and a bottle full of translucent blue fluid sitting on top, with several wineglasses next to it. A large painting of a chimera sits on the wall. If you listen closely, you could hear a soft and constant buzz coming from the lighting.

--------------------------------------- I also have other monster characters ^^ ----------------------------------------
Name: Jormundgandr Profession: Magician and scientist Height: 2.40 meters Race: Chimera (snake) Age: 80+?
Although at first glance York looks like an ordinary, average mage (something between skinny and wiry in physique), but he still has a lot of physical strength and his height "gently" hints at it. Weak expression of emotions and lack of empathy makes Snake a cold-blooded and strict man of science who respects order and observance of rules. Acquaintances often refer to him simply as Snake or Bookworm.
a few facts about him: - Works as a professor at the Academy of Magic. - Poor eyesight - Constantly freezing (hands like ice) . - Likes to spend time alone and quiet. - Has been married twice.
