My dear Carion! And canon, at that! 🥰

One headcanon I've had for these two for a while is that -- because they're both on the "A" side of the LGBT+ spectrum -- they wouldn't be huge into cuddling. Instead I could see them working side by side in the kitchen, holding hands, and (as pictured here) Carewyn laying her legs across Orion's lap on the couch while they're both sitting down. Even while sitting down with her legs up, though, Carewyn is a perpetual workaholic who has a lot of trouble putting down her work files and just relaxing, and so it's up to legal partner Orion to encourage her to slow down and take some time to herself, whenever he comes to stay the night.

"The world will wait a night for you, my Abraxan. Best shed those uncomfortable, stifling things until you truly need to wear them again." "I suppose that includes my work as well as my shoes." "Your troubles, broadly -- but specifically, yes." "(soft laugh) I suppose it would be good to take them both off for a night...these heels do pinch my toes after a while."

This song made for very good inspiration for this, since I could see Carewyn singing it for Orion more than once. Its last stanza in particular would really speak to her, when Orion's traveling with the Montrose Magpies --

HPHM Cardverse AU: Friends Aren’t Faraway

Hey everyone! So I got a small stimulus of inspiration today for Cardverse! Why not flesh out Cato’s friendships with a few of the leading members of the other kingdoms? Two years ago I wrote three fics detailing three of his friendships with the canon OCs, Talbott, Chiara and Badeea. While Cato can regularly interact with his friends at Hogwarts in the canon universe, it’s different for Cardverse.

The characters are all in different kingdoms, but physical distance cannot crush true friendships! For this post I’ll be focusing on canon HPHM characters, so only Spades and Hearts will be covered. Cato and Penny’s ship will be in another post. I’d love to work on friendships with other people’s OCs - all of you guys are always welcome to send me asks and DMs to discuss ideas!

Cardverse AU was originally created by @ariparri, who also is the creator of Veruca McQuaid. With all that said, here’s our feature presentation.

Representing the Land of Clubs, the Ace of Clubs, Cato Reese, often interacts with the officials of other kingdoms. He takes part in meetings where the four kingdoms join to conference on issues that affect all the states. Letters and telephone calls are also used by him to reach his friends in other kingdoms. As a high-ranking Clubs official, he also has the ability ride the train to anywhere in Cinderhaven, with first class accommodations.

It is important to note that he was appointed to the position of Ace of Clubs by King Orion Amari in the early stages of a crisis in the Country of Spades. He couldn’t reach anyone in Spades because Rakepick’s regime had cut all communications and transport. During that period of time, the only way he’d be able to meet and interact with the Ace and Jack of the kingdom was during conferences.

Queen Veruca elected to only send her representatives Bill Weasley and Rowan Khanna to them. She was very devoted to her commitments and responsibilities to the citizens of Spades. They depended on her to keep their efforts to take back and rebuild their country organized and morale high. As a result, Cato only heard her in mentions, but he held a lot of respect for her and her ways of handling the crisis.

Clubs and Spades were in an alliance during the war, in which Cato would lead a surprise attack against Rakepick’s army. He got along well with both Bill and Rowan. With the Ace of Spades, he’d go over strategy, tactics and the innards of the enemy. He and Rowan would discuss the impacts of Rakepick’s actions on Spades and the steps needed to rebuild. While the commander of the Clubs’ military, Cato also had a duty in overseeing law enforcement there. These two circumstances were among the reasons that contributed to him taking the diplomatic and political implications of the matter seriously.

Outside of their duties, Cato, Bill and Rowan also exchanged details about their lives in their respective kingdoms and their hopes for the future. They continued to maintain contact after the war. With the situations in the kingdoms stabilizing, they would have the time to meet up more often.

Cato also had strong relations with Barnaby Lee and Chiara Lobasca, the Ace and Jack of Hearts, respectively. The two Aces were similar in their styles of leadership. When not at conferences, they at many times would look to each other for inspiration and advice, both in writing and over the phone. Cato also revered the times he’d get a letter or a call from Chiara. She concerned for his well-being and how the situation with Rakepick’s regime was treating him. The Jack also appreciated his ways of balancing his loyalty and accountability to his people with the interests of the other kingdoms.

King Diego of Hearts was impressed when he first heard that young Cato had become Ace of Clubs. He was excited and anticipated his future progress holding the position. The King was thrilled when he was able to meet up with Cato after his appointment to Ace of Clubs. They enjoyed each other’s company, and his attitude helped Cato’s confidence in his new duties. Diego would catch onto his ability to keep calm and reassure his people in spite of the uncertain and unpredictable nature of the Spades crisis.

He noted that the Ace of Clubs had the values of Hearts, using his intelligence and knowledge for the benefit of the citizens. While he was sure that Cato would also be just as good in the Kingdom of Hearts, Diego understood that his true place lied with King Orion in Cubs. Nevertheless, Cato was always welcome in Diego’s court, even receiving invitations from him, Chiara and Barnaby from time to time.

Merula 🤝 Carewyn

tw: brief mention of attempted suicide, mention of murder

It was a Monday, and the day Chiara finally deemed Carewyn well enough to leave the Hospital Wing. Carewyn's weeks-long neglect of herself after Rowan's death had brought her dangerously close to ending her own life, and Chiara had been passionate in not letting Carewyn go back to her own devices until she was sure her friend's physical and emotional health had both improved. Fortunately one thing that gave Carewyn focus was the newly formed Circle of Khanna.

Carewyn was only one of five founding members of the Circle. Ben had actually been the one to come up with the name. Bill, always Carewyn's right-hand man when it came to dealing with the Vaults, had served as de facto leader while Carewyn was recovering. The people who'd really worked to do the most recruiting, however, were the other two ringleaders, Charlie and Merula. And it was Merula who met Carewyn outside the Hospital Wing so they could talk on their way down to Potions class.

"Hello, Merula," said Carewyn.

"You look like rubbish, Cromwell," Merula said dryly.

She started down the hall beside Carewyn, her magenta eyes ran over the other girl's face critically.

"...I don't think I ever realized just how much makeup you put on every morning," she said absently.

"So says the queen of mascara," Carewyn shot back very coolly.

"I never said I didn't put on makeup," Merula huffed.

She looked a bit more pensively at Carewyn as they walked.

"It's just...I've never once seen you break out, or get chapped lips, or have a bad hair day," she said absently. "I felt like I was rooming with a bloody china doll."

"You sure didn't treat me like a china doll," Carewyn said very coolly. "Or do you frequently shut china dolls into rooms with Devil's Snare?"

"I said I was sorry about that, okay?" Merula shot back in annoyance. "What I mean is it was annoying to be around Little Miss Perfect all the time, when you're constantly having to apply bubotuber pus to your hairline."

Her lips curled up into more of a smirk.

"But looking at you like this...your eye bags really are awful."

Carewyn cocked her eyebrows. "Almost as bad as my brother's?"

Something in Merula's eyes lit up with genuine amusement. "Yeah, actually!"

She laughed. It was a kind of laugh Carewyn wasn't used to hearing out of Merula -- mocking and full of schadenfreude, sure, but not wholly mean-spirited. Maybe even a bit happy, strange as it sounded. Carewyn figured it had to be because of the mention of Jacob, and the reminder of Merula's crush on her brother made her wince a bit.

She'd be lucky if Jacob even put things together fast enough to turn her down nicely, Carewyn thought dully. However academically and magically brilliant Jacob was, he'd always been notoriously dumb when it came to dealing with people, and if there was one person he was bound to never see in any kind of a romantic light, it was Merula Snyde.

The memory of Jacob, and of how much he'd pushed her away this last year, hurt Carewyn the longer it lingered -- so, shifting her gaze to the wall, she shifted gears, becoming much more serious.

"...How are your recruiting efforts coming along?"

Merula's face instantly grew more serious too.

"Good," she said in a slightly lower voice. "Charlie's already recruited Egwu, Winger, and Barnaby...and I talked to Diego, and he's all up to giving Rakepick what-for. Apparently after what happened to Khanna, he's been blasting dummies apart on the regular."

Carewyn raised her eyebrows, surprised. "Really?"

"Yeah...Ismelda overheard Sprout inviting Diego to her office for some tea and fairy cakes, after finding him on the Training Grounds with about ten ruined dummies."

"Wow..."

Carewyn's eyes fell down to the floor. She had a hard time visualizing someone as amiable and suave as Diego being so uncomposed.

"I know," said Merula. "Even when I went to go talk to him, he didn't smile at all...except a little one when I told him you were okay: he asked as soon as he saw me," she added with a rather dismissive shrug. "But well...everyone's upset, about what happened to Khanna. Ismelda too -- she asked to join up."

Carewyn was taken aback. "She did? But...why would she do that? Ismelda's never liked me."

"So? Neither have I, yet I'm still here," Merula said airily. She then grew much more serious again. "Cromwell...as much as we're not friends, we were both there, in the Forest. In the Portrait Vault too. We both saw Rakepick betray us -- we both saw her kill Khanna."

The reminder of what had happened to Rowan made Carewyn close up like a clam -- she closed her eyes and turned away, trying to shut out the flash of green and Rowan's vacant eyes from her memory. Merula pressed on regardless.

"You and I both have reason to want Rakepick to face justice...and as long as Rakepick walks free, she's a threat to all of us. Ismelda knows that just as well as we do."

Her magenta eyes drifted off toward the wall ahead of them absently as they migrated down the stairs.

"And well," she added a bit more uncomfortably under her breath as they reached the landing, "as much as Khanna was your friend...she didn't deserve this. She..." she swallowed, "...she didn't deserve to die."

Carewyn didn't answer. Her blue eyes stayed locked on the far wall. Merula waited for a moment for a response, and upon not getting one, moved on again.

"You aren't the only one who misses Khanna, Cromwell," she muttered. "I hope you're not so arrogant to assume that."

Carewyn looked up, her blue eyes very sharp. "I know that."

Rowan deserves all the love she's received. She's always deserved it.

Her expression then gained more of its composure back as she shifted her gaze ahead again to the stone wall.

"...I just...wouldn't have expected so many people would want to help me, after everything," she said lowly.

After all of the lies, all my pretending...after Rowan...

A wince pulsed through Carewyn's features as the memory of that green light from Rakepick's wand danced over her eyes again.

It was because of me that she was there...because of me that she...

Merula scoffed. "Hey, you somehow opened all the Cursed Vaults, made Prefect, and ended up Little Miss Popular without even wanting it. Things have always been easy for you..."

"'Easy?'" Carewyn said very coldly. "Are you sure you want to have my life, Merula?"

Merula faltered. Her eyes flickered down over the dark, skull-like bags under Carewyn's eyes, before she immediately shifted her gaze down to the floor.

"That's...that's not what I meant," she mumbled, her voice betraying some vulnerability despite herself.

She went very quiet.

"...I just mean that people tend to flock around you. You've always gotten people to like you -- to do things for you, without you asking them to. I mean, Orion Amari's still knocking on your door with invitations to rejoin the Quidditch team, after you only ever played in one game. Flitwick's always favored you, almost as much as Copper -- not to mention you managed to get a talented older student like Bill on your side, even while you were only a second year..."

Coming to a halt outside the Potions classroom, Merula brought a hand through her bangs to shift them out of her face.

"You've always had people willing to help you," she said a bit more stiffly. "I guess I just don't see why that's so weird to you now."

Carewyn considered Merula for a long moment. Then, glancing toward the door of the Potions classroom, she shook her head.

"...I guess it's because...I know I don't deserve it," she admitted lowly. "I'm only one person -- someone small, and weak, and powerless, in the face of something like R. And as much as I want to help, I know there's so much I can't do...that I can't control. I can't protect the people I love, and I can't even protect myself. Merula sighed. "Knowing your luck, Cromwell, that approach will probably be just what's needed to get them eating out of your hand..."

Random Hogwarts Mystery Headcanons because I have a lot of Ideas

Badeea Ali has really bad environmental allergies. She has to take allergy potions before Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology

Skye Parkin has a nut allergy and didn’t realize for way to long she just thought nuts were spicy

Ben Copper and Jae Kim are lactose intolerant

Badeea has undiagnosed autism, she’s an 80’s kid and the child of immigrants.

Badeea was the first in her family to be born outside of Egypt, her father immigranted when her half brothers were small and her mother immigranted as a young woman

Tulip is the heaviest sleeper ever. Charlie Mosley and Badeea have to flip over her mattress to wake her up when she over sleeps

She sleeps through that as well

Barnaby is epileptic due to a TBI he got as a child

He mostly has absence seizures, once or twice a year he might have a tonic-clonic seizure

He keeps this a secret, since he’s embarrassed of having brain damage

Chiara is the only one that knows he’s epileptic and she helps him when he has a seizure

Reggie Tonks (Nyphmadora’s younger brother) actually became friends with Ismelda Murk due to both of them being a bit satanic

Reggie loves to test out his new spells and Ismelda likes to cause pain so she helps him get victims test subjects

Reggie is also friends with Badeea since both like to invite new spells

Tonks doesn’t get it. She loves her little brother but doesn’t understand why people in her year are friends with him

Tonks is very protective of her little brother

Diego Caplan teases Amelia and Ben for being Ashkenazi

Diego is Sephardic btw

When Amelia and Diego are on patrol together they joke around and argue about Jewish stuff

The other Prefects, Barnaby, Liz, Badeea, Andre, Penny and Charlie are confused about this and when Amelia said ‘a good amount of our culture is arguing’

Tonks is not trust with sharp objects

Ben and Badeea both became Uncle/Aunt while at Hogwarts

Andre does drag

Talbott finds this hot and annoying since Andre is a horrible singer

Ben’s family really loves Amelia. She was invited to his second sister Rina’s wedding

Orion is a stoner

He also doesn’t shower that much

He has horrible BO

Skye has a pair of lucky socks are that are super smelly

Rath sweats a lot and uses so much deodorant to deal with BO

When Badeea sees the name ‘Khalid Ali’ in the news paper she hopes it a different Khalid Ali and not her half brother. It’s often her half brother

Andre was once reading an international wizarding newspaper and the headline was ‘British-Egyptian wizard in Cairo. Badeea knew instantly it was her half brother

More about Badeea’s half brothers when they were at Hogwarts they anglicized their names Samir went by Sam and Khalid went by Kenny. Khalid is called Kenny by most of his friends but didn’t legally change his name because it was too much work

Badeea does technically have an anglicized nickname, B. She’s mostly called this by the other Ravenclaws.

Amelia and Badeea bond over the fact both of them don’t speak English at home.

Khalid was friends with both Duncan and Jacob but he no interest in the cursed vaults

Barnaby, Liz, Diego, Penny, Andre, Badeea, Charlie and Amelia took a Prefect photo and re take it at their reunions

Murphy and Rath are constantly on and off dating

Going to a romantic play together, totally ignoring Erika's existence (and she was sitting right next to Orion) cause "We HaVe To TaLk To EaCh OtHeR AREN'T WE SUCH GREAT FRIENDS & MORE ALIKE THAN WE MIGHT THINK?) and now hanging out all alone (rip Murphy) behind a stand cause they are asocial?

Also Jae was a touch of class. We love him.
