Stressful didn't begin to cover the week. For either of them. Lily knew, for a fact, even if Harvey hadn't said anything, that the new coverage of the case he and Gordon had gotten slammed with was wearing on him. She could see it in his eyes, practically feeling it in every word that he spoke. She was likely no better off, with the university breathing down her neck for some breakthrough in her research at the same time that they wanted her to take on more grad students plus the loss of two of her student that had been TAs for her. Barely time to breathe, let alone be able to let go of everything and relax.

Friday night had come along, and they both had decided simultaneously that enough was enough. The way that they had asked at the same time to go out for a drink would have been amusing if either could have given it the time of day. Now, Lily had drinks with Harvey before. The most she allowed herself, though, was enough to feel a faint buzz before she called it off and switched to water. Tonight? It wasn't the case. If there was anyone that she could let that guard down around, it would be Harvey. Even if he was drunk, she had no doubt of her safety with him. So, what was the harm in letting herself overindulge a little.

Swaying a little on her feet as she came back with another round, the bar was starting to get a little too crowded for her liking.

"We should get some food and continue back at my place..." An open invitation that wasn't unusual between the two friends at this point, though with her inhibitions lowered, her mind did travel down some roads it probably shouldn't have.

Rain splattered against the window of the loft, city lights blurred against the swell of water and the collision of the loft's warmth with the cold outside. It was a soft interruption between every kiss Aylin found herself entangled in with Chase under the dark and twist of sheets. He had taken longer than she anticipated to come back, and as soon as she found him at her side, she made sure to find every inch of him returned to her. His smell was buried under the smell of soap, familiar almost too often because of what he washed away over and over again. Aylin could remember the first time she realized why it had ben dug into his skin, and it had been on a night just like this. She had doubted his comfort then, only to search for it over and over again since. She'd driven herself to push out that night from her memory and replace it with any other moment with him that she could. Instead of treading carefully, Aylin found herself at his side as if to blur out the contradictions found in that alleyway and rationalize every warning sign she could now see in full light. Aylin pushed herself on top of him, her legs at his sides. His chest under her, every breath stolen against her lips and discarded— she looked for the beat of his heart, the strain of his control, the ache of his fingertips into her skin. Every small hurt she craved as a means of putting meaning to the shadow of his former violence against an enemy she didn't know, carve it into a bliss she could use to her advantage. It drove her hand around his throat while her breath grazed his in a desperate heat. The same notion to taunt him over and over until he took control to bring her nothing but a sweet headache. A small gasp pulled her lips off his as she caught her breath, the questioning burning in her thoughts as she pulled away from this moment again and again. She could taste her motivation, her exasperation to drown this night into every other thought to contaminate it with just this— fervent zeal, agonizing contentment, rapturous misery. It wasn't working this time, and it's artificial desire flooded her mouth. "How many times have you done it?" Aylin asked, her thought breathed into the quiet of the room. "What you did that night behind the club, how many times have you done it since?"

for chapter 4 of demon slayer we have our second name breakdown post! only two names in there that i thought were worth breaking down, but it's something.

also, a warning: the noun, verb, and grammar notes posts will be very long. chapter 4 is where the story of demon slayer really gets going, with a brief explanation of what demons and demon slayers are, plus the first half of tanjirou's training arc. it only makes sense that the vocabulary would ramp up too :)

"I'll be damned if we can make it out of this alive," Sullivan scoffed, leaning against the counter. The club was almost as loud as the thrashing of his heart in his chest, nerves always shot when they ventured out in well-known corners of Los Angeles. There was always a chance for a photo opp, and while the band wasn't as well known as Sawyer, there was a chance they'd make their mark in a way they didn't anticipate. Other patrons pushed and pulled to the music and the demand of the bar, throwing Sullivan closer into her space. "We should get out of here soon. Your brother can't hold his liquor to save his life, and he was suppose to be the driver tonight."

次第 – a noun used as a suffix in the context of this chapter. when used after a noun it has the meaning of depending on. urokodaki says to tanjirou that he has nothing more to teach him and follows up by telling him that after this, the rest of his training depends on himself. | しだい

～かどうか – an expression that means whether or not. urokodaki uses this when talking to tanjirou about the final part of his training, wondering aloud about whether or not tanjirou will be able to channel what he’s been taught.

～だっけ – an expression used after a phrase when trying to recall something, ask for confirmation, or when feeling nostalgic. tanjirou uses this when urokodaki tells him to cut the boulder and he wonders to himself if he heard him correctly.

ただ – a versatile word, in this context being used as a conjunction, meaning but, however, nevertheless. tanjirou uses it when stating how glad he was that he wrote everything he learned down in his diary, but even after six months he still could not cut the boulder.
