The UK parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is working on its report (and recommendations) from its inquiry into the economics of music streaming. One of the big talking points during the inquiry’s evidence sessions was equitable remuneration (ER): specifically extending it from radio and TV to some streams.
The Broken Record campaign has made ER one of its key requests of the committee; labels have argued firmly against it; and (in our view, at least) the committee seems to be leaning more towards the former camp. But the committee isn’t the British government, so if ER is to be extended, ministers will need to be convinced too.
That campaign is already starting. A letter sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson – and shown to Music Ally this morning – sees a who’s who of British musicians backing such an extension. Sir Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Chris Martin, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Kate Bush, Roger Daltrey, Damon Albarn, Noel Gallagher, Laura Marling, Sir Tim Rice… and many more.
“Only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio,” argues the letter. But it also calls for a competition inquiry (or at least a government referral to watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority); for songwriters to get a bigger share of streaming royalties; and the establishment of a dedicated regulator “to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers”.
Later today, we’ll publish our quarterly Music Ally report, including our analysis of the key talking points of the inquiry, and what might happen next. One of our suggestions was that while the DCMS committee seemed sympathetic to the Broken Record campaign’s arguments, the government ministers seemed to be leaning more towards labels’ view of the world.
The letter shows that the former group are going to work hard to change that, and in wheeling out the musical big guns, the intensity of the lobbying has stepped up several notches – even before the DCMS committee’s report has come out. Labels and their representative body the BPI must now decide how best to respond.
Here is the full text of the letter, and its signatories:
———-
Dear Prime Minister,
We write to you on behalf of today’s generation of artists, musicians and songwriters here in the UK.
For too long, streaming platforms, record labels and other internet giants have exploited performers and creators without rewarding them fairly. We must put the value of music back where it belongs – in the hands of music makers.
Streaming is quickly replacing radio as our main means of music communication. However, the law has not kept up with the pace of technological change and, as a result, performers and songwriters do not enjoy the same protections as they do in radio.
Today’s musicians receive very little income from their performances – most featured artists receive tiny fractions of a US cent per stream and session musicians receive nothing at all.
To remedy this, only two words need to change in the 1988 Copyright, Designs and Patents Act. This will modernise the law so that today’s performers receive a share of revenues, just like they enjoy in radio. It won’t cost the taxpayer a penny but will put more money in the pockets of UK taxpayers and raise revenues for public services like the NHS.
There is evidence of multinational corporations wielding extraordinary power and songwriters struggling as a result. An immediate government referral to the Competition and Markets Authority is the first step to address this. Songwriters earn 50% of radio revenues, but only 15% in streaming. We believe that in a truly free market the song will achieve greater value.
Ultimately though, we need a regulator to ensure the lawful and fair treatment of music makers. The UK has a proud history of protecting its producers, entrepreneurs and inventors. We believe British creators deserve the same protections as other industries whose work is devalued when exploited as a loss-leader.
By addressing these problems, we will make the UK the best place in the world to be a musician or a songwriter, allow recording studios and the UK session scene to thrive once again, strengthen our world leading cultural sector, allow the market for recorded music to flourish for listeners and creators, and unearth a new generation of talent.
We urge you to take these forward and ensure the music industry is part of your levelling-up agenda as we kickstart the post-Covid economic recovery.
Yours sincerely,

Freaking Out Ch 24
Andy joined Sharon on the porch once dinner was in the oven. "I saw Davis on the elevator when I was leaving work, and she asked me how I was doing. What the hell?! You don't think that means anything, do you?"
Sharon shrugged. "Maybe it means that everyone has good qualities and that things aren't always what they seem."
Andy groaned. "I knew you were going to say some bullshit like that!"
Several weeks later
By the middle of May, Sharon's retirement was official, she and Andy had taken their honeymoon to Ireland, Emily, Emmett, and Rusty were all now permanent residents for the foreseeable future, and Sharon and Emily had taken an extended visit to her parents' house. Sharon's retirement party had been attended by her children, siblings, and some of their family members, the entire Major Crimes division and their families, various officers from other divisions with whom she'd either worked with in FID or otherwise had become friends with through the years, Fritz and Brenda, Andrea, Gavin, Sharon's closest friends from church and her old neighborhood, and a couple of college friends she still kept in touch with. Lieutenant Hernandez from Robbery Homicide, now Captain, had taken over Major Crimes, and that transition was...Well, it was going. Provenza hadn't taken the news of being passed over very well, but he was adjusting. Ireland had been just as beautiful and romantic as she'd imagined it to be, and the trip had ended all too soon. The visit with her parents had been relaxing and filled with visits with old high school friends and her brother's family, and now she was back at home to settle into retirement life.
Ricky arrived for the week one Friday night, as his presence was required in L.A. for work the next week, and it was odd for Sharon to have all of her children home at once when it wasn't a holiday or special occasion. She certainly wasn't complaining. Ricky had to come to L.A. for work a couple of times a year, but those trips never coincided with Emily's visits home. They all gathered in the living room after dinner, as it was pouring rain outside and no one had any plans for the evening. "Ooh, Titanic...Damn it, it's the end," Emily said as Ricky scrolled through the channel listings.
"Yeah, because that's why we won't be watching that movie," Ricky muttered.
"Damn it, it's the end," Andy added with mock disappointment.
Sharon shrugged. "I wouldn't mind watching Leonardo DiCaprio for a few hours."
"Ooh, same here," Rusty agreed.
Emmett wrinkled his nose. "It's a little too depressing for my taste."
"Ricky, I'm your pregnant sister," Emily urged, hoping to break the tie in her favor. "I'm about to give you a niece. She will adore you and sit in your lap and call you Uncle Ricky and—"
Ricky rolled his eyes. "Oh, wow, I was here for three whole hours before you threw that in my face. Are you getting soft?"
"You wish."
"Well..." Ricky looked thoughtful. "Kate Winslet does wear low-cut dresses and gets almost naked. I guess I'm in."
"Traitor," Andy mumbled.
Ricky navigated to the Netflix app on the TV and searched for the movie. "What the hell?! It's not on Netflix? And who's been watching When Calls the Heart?" He asked, seeing the recently viewed shows. "Isn't that some girly Hallmark show?"
Sharon looked confused. "Not me."
"I've never even heard of it," Rusty said.
All eyes turned to Andy. "Huh. Maybe someone, uh, hacked your account."
"To watch When Calls the Heart?!" Ricky cackled. "Nice try, Andy."
"Hold on, let me log into my Hulu. Maybe it's there," Emily said, changing the subject. She took the remote from Ricky. "Nope, not there, either. We can rent it on Amazon if it's not on Prime."
Sharon went to the kitchen to get a glass of wine, and the movie was loading when she got back and wedged herself into the recliner beside Andy. Petey, Emily's gray and white cat, sauntered into the living room and looked around, silently calculating who in the room wanted his presence in their lap the least. He headed straight toward Sharon and Andy. "Oh, no, you don't, you little furball," Sharon warned.
Undaunted, Petey jumped up into the chair and plopped down in Sharon's lap. She knew pushing him off wouldn't do any good, since he would repeatedly jump back into her lap until she gave up, so she settled against Andy and accepted her fate.
"I can't believe I'm watching this chick flick," Andy muttered.
Ricky grinned. "Oh, sorry, Andy, would you rather watch When Calls the Heart?"
"It's a good show!" Andy protested. "I like history, and it has Aunt Becky from Full House. You can't go wrong with that."
Emily had been obsessed with Titanic when it first came out, so Sharon had seen it enough times to be desensitized to it by now. The same clearly couldn't be said for Andy. They all knew what was coming, but Sharon was surprised to hear sniffling beside her. She looked over at Andy. "Are you crying?"
"No!" Andy quickly wiped his eyes, but he was still tearing up. "It's just my allergies."
Sharon gave him a disbelieving look. "Allergies? Since when?"
"Since there was enough room for both of them on that damn door, and Jack didn't have to die!"
Sharon couldn't help but laugh. "Is that why you didn't want to watch this? I'm sorry, Andy, I'm just surprised. It's okay, we won't tease you—"
"Whoa, Mom, I never agreed to that," Emily interrupted. "I'm kidding, Andy, I just didn't peg you as a movie crier." She giggled. "But you have to admit that a cop crying over Titanic is pretty funny."
Andy wasn't fazed by the banter and was still stuck on the door concept. "But seriously! Even if they didn't both get on the door, Rose could've moved over just a little so Jack wasn't mostly in the water and didn't get so cold! This is such bullshit!"
Sharon wasn't even trying not to laugh by now. All three kids and Emmett were laughing good-naturedly, too, so she didn't see the point of trying to suppress it. "Is this the first time you've seen this?"
"Are you kidding? Nicole was obsessed with this movie. I wasn't around her much when this movie came out, but I still managed to see it more than once. And had the privacy of the dark and more of my own space so I could weep in peace!"
"Awww, Andy." Sharon sat further up in the chair and held his head to her shoulder. "That was actually pretty hot," she whispered. "Maybe I'll have to cheer you up later." She kissed a stray tear at the corner of his eye and wiped his eyes with her thumbs.
Andy tilted his chin up and kissed her. "I could get on board with that."
"Ewww, are they being gross?" Rusty whined.
"If they're awake, then the odds are in your favor," Emily grumbled. "Seriously, you guys, get a room."
Later that night, after Sharon had cheered Andy up as promised, they both had a bit of a second wind. "It finally stopped raining. Let's sit on the porch for a while," Sharon suggested.

Polkadots At Mill Mountain Creates A Bright Big Beautiful World We Want To Live In
#MeetmeatMillMountain to see a bold performance with whole lot of heart brought to you by a passionate creative team.
By Dana and Ricky Young-Howze
Mill Mountain Theatre Roanoke, Virginia
Review 106
We we’re excited about this play the minute that we saw it was announced on the Mill Mountain Theatre website. Ricky and I met in Roanoke and we have both been seen the Trinkle main stage and have fond memories of the Waldron Theatre. So when we heard that they were streaming Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical with book by Melvin Tunstall III , Music by Greg Borowsky and Douglas Lyons, and Lyrics by Douglas Lyons. We knew that we just had to see it! This specific production was directed by Christopher Castanho and was performed by an amazing group of performers!
Tumblr media
Brother and Sister Sky and Penelope Square have a new student coming to their class, Lily Polkadot. She’s an 8 year old kid just like them...except she’s covered in Dots where they are covered in squares. Will they learn to accept Lily for who she is? Will Lilly find friends in her new school? Find out for yourself in this vibrant world that Mill Mountain Theatre is inviting you into.
We were really wowed by this cast! Ricky most enjoyed the dynamic through Buckner’s Lilly and Mercado’s Penelope. Buckner’s smooth demeanor and bright performance was a good foil to Mercado’s prickly attitude and rough edges. Mulkey’s sky was also a bright ray of sunshine in our day with his vibrant energy onstage. Of course Ricky also had a soft spot in their heart for Mrs. Square (played by Madeline Walker) who anchored the cast together. Let’s also not forget to mention Roberto Mendez’s memorable performance as Papa Square. If you’re gonna be onstage the least amount of time it’s best to make yourself stand out in a big way and he did.
Tumblr media
Now the design and choices that went into what we see onstage is where the play really takes off. The colors everywhere, the sets, the lights, and the projections created a world so real that we immediately bought into it. We really want to applaud the entire production and design team that got together to make this world so inviting and immersive. All of it really popped out of the screen and made this world real to us. All of them deserve a round of applause!
Actually they might have made us buy into this world too much. The genius of this play is that it tackles the issue of race by turning it into something nonsensical. If Ricky painted themselves purple and drew dots on their skin and I painted myself blue and drew squares on mine it wouldn’t change who we are. However the play chooses to take those drastic and alien skin colors and make a world out of them. They become a Seussian “Stars Upon Thars”.
We wish that this idea was way more represented in the makeup design because in my mind as a Black person Lilly is still obviously the only Black character onstage, not purple. To me this filled the metaphor a bit and made it very literal to me again. We’re supposed to have our guard down and let the alien world of this show push past those filters that we put up due to race or culture. The minute I saw Lilly however, my wall that I’ve cultivated for years being the only Black person in the room went right back up and this show became about race again.
That doesn’t mean that the casting was wrong. Ricky and I would fight you on trying to change a single cast member. This doesn’t mean that we don’t think the show is powerful because we absolutely believe it is the best thing to be showing to young audiences and broadcasting to the world right now. We’re just saying that the set, lighting, and projection design invited us into a bold and vibrant and powerful alien world that made us let our guard down. The costumes made us want to go out and rock our dots. The make up design, however, was where the world ended for us. We would invite them to go even bolder next time.
Working from a backing track instead of a live band was a great choice although it did seem like our cast’s singing was way stronger than the music. We missed that feeling of virtuosity that comes when singers that are really good at what they do match up with expert instrumentalists. We definitely know from our interview with artistic director Ginger Poole that a live band would have been a headache in production that they didn’t need. For now we’ll just be excited for the wonderful singing of our cast led by music director Seth Davis.
This was a powerful children’s play that we hope goes all over the world because instead of getting a classroom full of kids to sit down and watch a PBS documentary or a Black History Play that we’ve all seen a million times before this engages them with a world that they want to step into and play in with music that they just have to get up and dance to and costumes that they’re just dying to put on. This play turns the audience into a community that makes us ask, “why can’t we all join in?” And it backs that question up with a powerful message of inclusion and acceptance. Now where do we get tickets to go live in Rockaway? We want pizza!ch
We sat down and interviewed Ginger Poole: The Artistic Director of Mill Mountain Theater about this show before it launched. Go to our YouTube channel to check it out. Also make sure you get your free tickets to the show before October 9th.

Emmy 2018: Veja a lista completa dos vencedores
New Post has been published on http://baixafilmestorrent.com/cinema/emmy-2018-veja-a-lista-completa-dos-vencedores/

stranger things oc challenge ⋆ day 001 — a (kinda) new oc
Being the younger brother of kind, smart, and accomplished Nicole Davis, Ricky has always felt like he fell short in some way. He wasn’t as smart, or as good as school, and not even as friendly as his older sister. He never quite compared. While Nick tried to make her brother feel loved - unlike their parents - it never seemed to work as much as she hoped it would.
The only people that ever truly made him feel worthy were his friends. His party. Will, Lucas, Dustin, and Mike liked Ricky just as he was, and during their dnd sessions they depended on him. They made him feel important and loved, but once they got to high school Ricky realized that wasn’t enough anymore. He wanted more - especially from Mike Wheeler.

Davis?!" Sharon exclaimed again. She couldn't get past this. As entertaining as the thought of Provenza's reaction was, she didn't want to leave her team in the hands of the likes of Winnie Davis. "She's overbearing, condescending, and, to be frank, a royal pain in the ass."
Andy tilted his head, and a boyish grin played at his lips. "Well, to be fair, we all thought the same about you just a few years ago."
"Yeah, well, that—it was—it's not the same!" Sharon sputtered.
"Well, I kind of hope it is, if we get stuck with her." Andy pecked her on the lips. "The whole 'falling in love with you' thing aside, anyway."
"Keep comparing me to her, and I'll be tempted to let you take your chances with her," Sharon muttered. "But, really, all of the options have been a thorn in our side at some point." For the most part, the animosity had to do with other divisions thinking that Major Crimes received favoritism when it came to resources and overtime hours, which Sharon had admittedly thought herself when she was in FID, but she mostly thought it was because of Brenda's and Pope's past relationship. Once she got more involved with Major Crimes and saw the kinds of things they had to deal with, and especially when she took over, she saw the need for such treatment. Lieutenant Daniels's animosity stemmed more from the terms of her departure from Major Crimes, despite the fact that Gabriel nor Brenda had been around in several years. Any time her division had any interaction with Major Crimes, she made things as difficult as possible for them.
A couple of hours later, Sharon and Andy got dinner in the oven and joined Emily, Rusty, and Eleanor outside. The toddler was on a blanket on the porch with her toys, and Emily and Rusty were sprawled out in chairs, talking and watching her play. Sharon knelt beside Eleanor and checked her diaper. "Come on, baby girl, let's get you changed really quick." Sharon gathered Eleanor in her arms and indicated for Rusty to follow her.
"What?" He asked, looking nervous.
"She's wet, and it's past time for you to pitch in with diaper changes every now and then. Andy and I don't like diaper changes any more than you do."
"Mo-om!" Rusty complained, begrudgingly following her inside.
"What if we had her on a weekend that Andy and I got rolled out?" Sharon pointed out.
Rusty rolled his eyes. "Then I could do it. It's not that I can't, I'd just rather not."
"Join the club." Sharon got what they needed and laid Eleanor on a changing pad. "Pull her pants down and unsnap her," she prompted when Rusty didn't move.
"I know that part," Rusty grumbled.
Sharon shrugged. "Well, you weren't moving." She handed him a wet wipe. "Wipe her down, make sure her diaper is even on the front and back, and tight enough, but not too tight, between her legs." Eleanor was kicking her legs and squirming around, but Rusty did a pretty good job of getting the diaper on her. "See? Was that so hard? Roll up the wet diaper and tape it closed with the tabs before you put it in the garbage." Sharon picked up the baby, poured a glass of wine for herself, and walked back outside.
Rusty gave Eleanor a bath soon after dinner, which he did pretty often, but Sharon usually put her diaper and pajamas on her afterward. This time, she stayed in the living room and let Rusty get her dressed for bed. By the time he got back to the living room with her, Eleanor was whimpering and rubbing her eyes. "Here, Mom, I think she's ready for bed." Sharon didn't usually rock her at night and just read to her and laid her in the pack and play when she got drowsy, but she wanted to let her get used to the new house before she did that now.
"Why don't you try rocking her tonight?" Sharon suggested. "We can skip the books, she looks like she's about to fall asleep. I don't think she'll give you much of a fight." She rubbed Eleanor's back and kissed her forehead. "You had a big day, huh? Night-night, sweetheart. Sleep tight."
Andy kissed Eleanor's cheek and ruffled her hair. "Goodnight, baby girl. Sweet dreams."
Rusty sat down in the recliner with Eleanor, and Sharon brought him a bottle of milk. "She'll probably be mostly asleep by the time her bottle's gone, anyway."
Rusty gave her the bottle and held her against his shoulder when she was finished, trying to mimic what he'd seen Sharon do with her, but Eleanor whimpered and struggled against him. "Get her, Mom, she's crying," Rusty said nervously.
"Hold her more tightly and pat her back," Sharon instructed. "She can tell you're nervous. Let me get ready for bed and turn her sound machine on, and I'll get her if she's still crying after that." She went back to her and Andy's room to wash her face, moisturize, and slip into her most comfortable nightgown. Having a toddler around for most of the day had been exhausting.
Eleanor was sleeping comfortably in Rusty's arms when she got back to the living room. "She's so sweet like this," Rusty said. "She's cute, but she'll wear you out."
"You have to stay on top of them all the time at this age," Sharon agreed. "Otherwise, you'll have to call a plumber because a toddler flushed a toy down the toilet or have to take said toddler to the doctor because she's stuffed something up her nose too far for me to get out." Sharon gave Emily a pointed look.
"You should've been watching me better," Emily said simply.
Later that night, Sharon and Andy left Emily and Rusty watching TV in the living room and went to bed. As Sharon slipped between the sheets, she was grateful, not for the first time, for the new king-sized bed. That had been a fight, but the extra space was worth the mournful and sad-puppy eyes she'd had to endure from Andy since the day she'd worn him down and won the argument. She felt like she'd just fallen asleep when Eleanor's cries woke her up, but the clock on her nightstand told her that it was 4:00 in the morning. Eleanor didn't normally wake up during the night unless something was wrong, so Sharon went ahead and got her up before she could wake Andy. "Honey, what's the matter?" She crooned as she lifted the baby into her arms. Not feeling well or the need for a diaper change was usually responsible for middle-of-the-night crying, so Sharon pressed her cheek to Eleanor's forehead and checked her diaper. "Hmm, no fever, and you're a little wet, but that shouldn't have woken you up," she murmured. "Let's get you into a dry diaper while we're up, and then you can get in bed with Andy and me." Eleanor was big enough for Sharon not to be afraid of putting her in their bed anymore, and she would probably wake up again in just a few hours, anyway. After a quick diaper change, Sharon got back in bed with Andy on one side and Eleanor on the other. Eleanor was one of the precious few exceptions to her 'don't touch me while I'm sleeping unless you have a death wish' rule, and she fell asleep with the baby cuddled into her side and grasping her hair.
When Sharon woke up again Sunday morning, it was after 8:00, and Eleanor was tapping her face and cooing. They'd both slept later than usual. "Well, hey, baby girl! Did you sleep good?" Sharon picked her up and followed the smell of coffee to the kitchen. She didn't normally drink much coffee on weekends, but she'd set the timer the night before, knowing she'd probably want it this morning. Andy wisely waited for Sharon to pour a mug and take a few sips before kissing the top her head and doing the same for Eleanor. "Morning. Is she okay? I checked on her when I woke up, and I was scared to death when she wasn't there until I realized she was beside you."
"Morning. She's fine. She woke up crying early this morning, but I think she was just a little out of sorts from being in a new place."
Emily barreled in as they were talking, faster than Sharon had ever seen her move first thing in the morning in her life. "Please tell me you have some pickles." Sharon had been prepared for this and got a jar from the refrigerator. She remembered seeing some in Emily's refrigerator when they'd visited her in New York, and she had craved them when she was pregnant with Emily, so she'd stocked up before she came to visit. Emily grabbed the jar from her, twisted the top off, and drank right out of the jar like she was going to die if she didn't have it right this second. "Oh, my god, that's so much better. I've been eating them, but I haven't really had a 'have-to-have-it-right-now craving for them yet."
"I craved them when I was pregnant with you, and they had to be Mount Olive Kosher Dill for me, too. That, and strawberry ice cream. But never at the same time." Sharon waited for Emily to come up for air before reaching into the jar and fishing out a pickle for herself. "I craved beef jerky with Ricky. I've never even liked it otherwise, but I ate my weight in it when I was pregnant with your brother."
Emily rolled her eyes. "Leave it to Ricky to make you crave something you don't even like."
"I know, right?" Sharon made some oatmeal for Eleanor and placed her in Emily's and Ricky's old high chair she'd gotten out of storage. By the time she outgrew it, there would be another baby around to use it. "I want to cook breakfast, but I don't know if Rusty will be up in time for me to need to make enough for him." Sharon had decided to skip mass in favor of a relaxing morning at home.
"I'll take care of that. Let me see your phone."
"Don't call him," Sharon said.
"I'm not, I promise. Just let me see your phone." Emily took Sharon's phone from her and opened the Google Home app. She, Ricky, and Rusty had gone in together and gotten one for Sharon and Andy as a housewarming gift. After looking through the names of the various speakers that were connected with it, she found the name associated with the one in Rusty's room, closed the app, gave Sharon's phone back to her, and turned toward the small device on the counter. "Hey, Google, play 'Barbie Girl' in Rusty's room."
"Emily!" Sharon chided, slipping a spoonful of oatmeal into Eleanor's waiting mouth.
"What? I didn't call him!"
Angry footsteps could then be heard coming down the hall, and a bleary-eyed and angry Rusty came in. "Emily! What the hell?! I wouldn't have gone in with you guys on that thing if I'd known you were going to do that with it!"
"Chill, little brother, I didn't have that idea until after we bought it. This is just a hilarious bonus."
"For you," Rusty muttered. "That's the worst song I've ever heard...That was not a challenge to prove me wrong, by the way." He took over feeding Eleanor, and Sharon and Andy started making breakfast.

PGA Championship tee times 2017: Start time and pairings for Friday's Round 2
A handful of lesser-known names will have plenty to prove on Friday at Quail Hollow.
Quail Hollow proved to be a major-caliber course in its first day hosting the PGA Championship. The question now is whether the game’s top golfers can master the newly renovated track in time for the weekend’s championship rounds.
2017 British Open champion Jordan Spieth summed up the course’s new, more challenging greens.
"That makes no sense at all,” Spieth said after a missed putt on the fifth hole — his 14th of the day — dropped him to +2. “It's these new greens. They do two different things."
Spieth, one of the top picks to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy Sunday evening, finished his opening round with a +1 72, five strokes off the lead.
Day one made it clear Quail Hollow is not the same course Rory McIlroy once dominated en route to a -21 finish at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. Longer holes, narrower fairways, and physics-defying greens have created the kind of challenge worthy of a major tournament. While top 10 fixtures like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Hideki Matsuyama all found ways to escape to the happy side of par, other notable pros like Spieth, Henrik Stenson, and Sergio Garcia found themselves struggling to disappointing starts.
Friday will separate the wheat from the chaff in the season’s final major. With the cut line rapidly approaching, the world’s best golfers will have to find a way to tame Quail Hollow or face an early trip home from North Carolina. The second round will also give several lesser-known duffers the chance to prove they’re for real.
Some intriguing names dotted the top of the leaderboard early on day one. Jim Herman, a former self-taught assistant pro at one of President Donald Trump’s golf courses, led the field for a brief moment before falling back to the pack and finishing at -2. Thorbjorn Oleson, a Dane who has never won a PGA Tour tournament, ended his day in first place after a -4 showing. Other less recognizable golfers like Grayson Murray, Gary Woodland, and Tony Finau also earned a spot in the top 10 after the first 18 holes of play.
The odds of remaining at the top of the leaderboard, ahead of a stacked field that includes each of the world’s top 10 golfers, aren’t especially bright. They’ll have plenty to prove Friday, where another solid round would put them in prime position for a championship run this weekend.
Here’s where every player will start their second rounds. All times are Eastern.

2017 PGA Championship TV schedule: Coverage and start time for Friday's round
A longer, meaner Quail Hollow is proving it’s major tournament material.
Day one of the PGA Championship saw lesser-known pros like Jim Herman and Thorbjorn Olesen stand atop the leaderboard for extended periods. Can a field loaded with golf’s biggest stars rise to the top on cut day? Or will a new star take a big advantage into the weekend’s championship rounds?
Thursday’s opening round proved a harried 12-week renovation was enough to transform Quail Hollow from a PGA Tour stop into a course worthy of one of golf’s major events. Two years after Rory McIlroy ripped through the course with a -21 to win the Wells Fargo Championship by a whopping seven strokes, a longer, meaner track kept the world’s best golfers in line.
Management at the course added four new holes and altered several others, forcing players to start their day with a 524-yard first hole. At most courses, that’d be a challenging par-5. At the PGA Championship, it’s a par-4. Boasting a range of shot-stopping bunkers, it’s a showoff hole designed to prove Quail Hollow is, in fact, major material.
Revamped greens and narrow fairways caused trouble for some of the event’s biggest names on day one. Jordan Spieth, the reigning British Open champion, needed to birdie two of his final three holes on Thursday just to finish at +1. Other top 10 fixtures like Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson also struggled their way to above-par rounds.
That doesn’t mean the top of the leaderboard was devoid of big names. 2017 U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka started his tournament with a -3 that put him in great position as the weekend approaches. World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, at -1, is in a similarly strong position.
The golfers will have more than just the course to tame at Quail Hollow. A balmy North Carolina climate meant sun, temperatures into the high 80s, and humidity so thick you can almost see it. That will only get worse Friday, as scattered thunderstorms threaten to halt play and drain players as they get deeper into their round.
Here’s where every player will start their second rounds and how you can follow all the action live. All times are Eastern.
