I finished all of Dungeons and Drag Queens finally, and I had some thoughts, nothing radical but I figure I'm actually on Tumblr so I might as well write them down
I picked this up as my first video Actual Play, having listened to a bunch of podcast ones, and it has confirmed for me that I need video at this point in my life in order to be able to follow these things; I used to have a lot of solo walking around time to listen to stuff but not anymore and if there's any distraction to audio stuff then it goes straight through my brain
The Queens were great choices for the format: excellent chemistry and sufficient chops to make interesting roleplay choices
Watching someone play their first game of D&D is not particularly fun (flapping their character sheets around oh lord) but on balance, across the season, there were enough unhinged new player swings to make up for it
And I loved that it gave Brennan the opportunity to bring out all of his camp councillor skills
Talking of Brennan, he did a really masterful job here and I have to acknowledge how fab it is to have him in full costume (inspired by Bob, I understand, who asked him to consider what his own drag would be, and apparently what we get is like a sexy half elf with golden ear piercings and smokey eyeshadow - no complaints)
The story was simple but full of fun detail and I loved how many of the lynchpin characters were kind of heightened, draggy looking femmes, very apropos
Excuse me but a vampire being like "sooooo if you'd like to talk more or whatever" after drinking from someone is very sweet
Jujubee, who is borderline certifiable in a great way, and could barely remember a single character name or anything that has happened even ten minutes previously, still brought most of the moments I loved. Hearing that she'd recently lost her cat after 15 years, and how that played into her story with Buddy Bear, was so genuinely moving
The battle set was phenomenal and I can't believe they turned out a Buddy Bear mini overnight
Seeing Brennan visibly moved in the finale honestly made me well up
I've immediately subscribed and can't wait for Mentopolis (so much has gone into this one and all of the elements excite me very much)
I really hope they make more, or try more big swing crossovers with people outside the TTRPG scene
