Despite using old, trusted components with a known history, refitting the Lava Dome still wasn't entirely without hassle (or free).
Standards, innit?
The disk rotors on the bike are/were the now ubiquitous 180mm standard diameter. By contrast, the Avid BB7 calipers I bought in 2007 were designed for 185mm disks. Well, just put on the 185mm rotors that I still have, right? Er, no - because the hubs are Shimano centrelock, while the Avid disks are six bolt. So... I've had to buy adapters enabling me to fit the six bolt 185mm rotors to the centrelock hubs, which is one of the reasons I hadn't already gone down this route...
One advantage of messing around with old bikes, trying to get things to work together in a way they weren't necessarily designed to do, is that you eventually end up with enough mounts, bodges and adapters that you can make virtually anything work with anything else!

...but if I had to choose the five tools that make life easier during standard maintenance tasks, it'd be these five (from the top):
Bottom bracket socket: no, not the cheap plastic adapter you plug into an old socket, skinning your knuckles on a big adjustable spanner as it strips out under minimal torque... I mean a good solid, steel socket you can plug into a ratchet and effortlessly spin off the BB cups with. Revelatory. You can also use these on some centrelock disk rotor fittings.
Master link pliers: make it so easy to pop open quick chain links that you'll almost forget the time you once spent wrestling with stiff, gritty chains, getting covered in oil as you tried to get them off your bike.
Chainring bolt spanner: the cheap little tool you stick into the rear slot to stop the chainring bolt spinning as you tighten it up with an allen key. Yep, you can do this with the screwdriver fitting on a Swiss Army knife, but I know which I prefer...
Brake piston press tool: one of a couple of specialised tools that make servicing hydraulic disk brakes so much easier. Again, you can bodge it with a screwdriver wrapped in a rag but, for the sake of a tenner, this is sooo much better...
Cassette spanner: as with the bottom bracket socket, this cassette lockring tool with attached handle is so much easier to use than old skool tools with a badly fitting spanner; makes spinning off your cassette a doddle, and can also be used on 9mm QR hub centrelock rotor fittings.
