Today, in honour of my 40th year of life, I’m celebrating my love of education and applying myself academically. I’ll start with high school. For those who are not familiar with the British school system, “A Level” is the last two years of high school education in the UK and many former British colonies. An A Level exam result is equivalent to the first year of university in the Australian system. At high school, I sat exams in 4 A Level subjects. The A Level course is super demanding. For this reason, most people sit two or three subjects. I added a fourth subject in my second and final year of the course. I’d spent a year abroad as an exchange student and returned fluent in German, a language I learned entirely while living in Switzerland. In order to stay on top and ahead of my massive workload, I found a French and a German tutor who had great track records with prior students. There actually wasn’t a German A Level class at my school so I made that shit happen (yes, I did). I also applied myself rigorously to my studies - which was pretty easy to do because I loved most of the subjects I had chosen (except for Geography, which Iiked). I came through with an A grade in English Literature and 3 Bs (French, German and Geography). I graduated from a school which ranks pretty high up for academic achievement in the southern African region (not just my country of origin). So, yeah, getting a place at that school was an achievement within itself which required my 12 year old self to work just as hard as my 18 year old self. I managed to study for my A Levels while holding leadership positions. I was a school prefect and head of my house. I was also the president of the public speaking club.
