IN CHARACTER DATE : early evening, may 2nd, 2024. TRIGGER WARNINGS : n / a.

"WE'RE DONE, BELLATRIX," he tells her, though his words seem to fall on deaf ears. she and rodolphus whisper to one another in hushed tones while the girl - brass & unafraid, even now, magically bound and magically silenced - is entrusted into the care of a masked stranger. if it can even be called that. he does not watch as she is dragged, with difficulty, in the other direction. instead he raises his voice, demanding to be heard. "i wash my hands of all of this. i'm done."

they clearly don't appreciate the intrustion. she looks to him, now, with obvious disdain. rodolphus seems poised to say something, probably dismissive, but a dainty hand on his arm silences him. "are you?" she asks, scornfully disbelieving, "i didn't tell you to use the mark."

"you didn't tell me not to, either," lucius points out, "i couldn't risk suspicion turning towards me, could i?"

she laughs, softly, though he doesn't really get the joke. "of course. fitting, nonetheless."

his expression clouds. a long, tense moment passes them by - tick, tock - before he admits, unhappily, "i don't understand."

"consider yourself forgiven, lucius," now she just sounds bored, both of him & of the conversation. it's clear that she feels all of this went without saying, and her patience runs thin now that she is forced to vocalize it, "you've done a great service at great personal cost. welcome back to the fold."

forgiveness. it tastes like copper, though against his better instincts, his heart soars.

"i told you-" he sounds unsure, now, and it infuriates him, "i'm-"

"you're done when i say that you're done," there's no arguing with her, now. or there is, there could be, but he doesn't know if he even wants to. her grip tightens on rodolphus' arm, though he gets the impression that this is a cautionary measure for herself - not for him. "our lord will want to thank you personally."

bellatrix is an enemy he cannot afford. still, he has the kind of allies that could protect him, if only he let them. if only he didn't want, for just a moment, to once again go along with what was easy - to fall back into the line that he already knew, the one that provided him so much power and influence that he didn't need a single soul other than himself to keep the people that he loved and himself, safe.

it's weakness. it always has been.

but it's familiar, all the same.

"... very well. it's an honor, bellatrix."

January 1979

♞ HE’D NEVER BEEN TO THE LESTRANGE MANOR. As it turned out, none of the meetings held there had him as a participating member. Severus wasn’t sure if it was because of the lack of trust some members held for him, or just a coincidence. ( The universe was never lazy enough for a coincidence, though. )

This time, he did need to speak with Rodolphus. What about, he was unsure of, but the Dark Lord had instructed him to work with the older man regarding something - his guess was that it had to do with the nightmare attacks they’d launched earlier. It seemed most probable - that was the biggest move they’d made recently, and for planning the next one, usually there would be a meeting. Not a one-on-one small talk session.

A house-elf guides him to a living room - at least, he thinks it is one. It’s larger than anything he’d ever seen, but Severus had never been a man of wealth.
